Early Churches in Syria, Fourth to Seventh Centuries - Part One, History; Part II. Analysis (Complete)

The Department of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 1929 - Folio (15 1/4 x 11 1/2"). xx, 274, [2]pp. Modern full burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Completed by Earl Baldwin Smith several years after Butler's death (1922), "Early Churches in Syria" is a scarce monograph on early Christian architecture in the Middle East. Much of our information about early Syrian churches depends on what Butler saw. Howard Crosby Butler taught architecture at Princeton University for over 20 years and led three expeditions to regions now in Syria and northern Jordan. He spent altogether over a year in the field, working rapidly, and amassing a vast quantity of observations and measurements which were used by Smith to complete this book. This work is divided into two parts (History and Analysis), and is lavishly illustrated throughout with 288 in-text b/w photographic reproductions and illustrations (floor plans, architectural drawings, etc.). Minor shelf wear. Ex-library copy with remnants of sticker at tail of spine, bookplate on inside of front cover, pocket on inside of back cover, and stamp at upper and lower paper edges. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Journey's End

Gollancz, London 1929 - First edition, the scarce first impression of this luckiest of authors' first commercial - and only significant - work. Sherriff's good fortune - and the phenomenal success of what is essentially a mediocre play - depended in large part on the appearance in the intital production of the work - by the Incorporated Stage Society in a two-day run at the Apollo Theatre in December 1928 - of the 21-year old Lawrence Olivier (directed by the equally unknown James Whale). The production transferred to The Savoy Theatre for a three-week run in January 1929 and thence to The Prince of Wales where it ran for two years, during which time it was also produced by 14 other companies in the Anglophone world and in 17 other languages across the world. Hollywood beckoned . . . The luck also rubbed off on Victor Gollancz, for whom the text was a first major publishing coup, selling 175,000 copies. Self-wraps mention a cloth issue of which it appears there was no such. Together with a copy of the programme for a performance of the first production at The Prince of Wales Theatre on 26 August 1929. A very good copy with the wrappers somewhat rubbed and soiled, missing a half-inch chip to head of spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
