Paris: J. Povolozky, 1921. Octavos (18.5 × 13.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers pasted over blind self-wrappers (as issued); 8 pp. Wrappers illustrated with five variant pochoir patterns. Numerous small vignettes in the text. Very good. Russian fairy tale printed for children of Russian émigrés in France, with illustrations by the ten-year-old Zhenya Kovarskaya, the daughter of Ilya Kovarskii and Lidiia Kovarskaia, an editor-and-publisher duo which had left Soviet Russia in 1919. Each of the five copies features a variant wrapper, decorated by hand using different patterns, most likely using the pochoir technique. Given small irregularities, it appears likely that this work was also carried out by children. The publisher, J. Povolozky, ran a gallery in Paris in the 1920s and was known for his collaboration with Russian avant-garde artists Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. KVK, OCLC show copies (one each) at NYPL, Princeton, Stanford, and UNC Chapel Hill, without specifying which of the wrapper variants are held. Not at the Russian State or National Library. Not in Savine.

Rasmus Kangro-Pool / Voldemar Kangro-Pool cover design,
Varrak, Tallinn 1921 - Estonian language. Octavo 16 x 24 cm. Weight 155 gr. Wrappers, 66 pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Slightly frayed right edge of front cover and left edge of back cover, paper yellowing to the cover edges, owner's signature to the bottom edge of the front cover and to the centre of the title page. Great Expressionist woodcut on the cover created by outstanding Estonian artist Voldemar Kangro-Pool (1889-1943), who was brother of Rasmus Kangro-Pool. Early works were characterized as Art Nouveau and Futurism. Also he is known for his Expressionist and Jugendstil erotic drawings in Indian ink and Symbolist wood engravings. The second half of the 1920s witnesses the obvious calming down. He was already sufficiently well-known artist and his earlier restless futuristic themes are being replaced with peaceful, thoughtful manner of close-to-nature landscapes. Essay author Rasmus Theodor Kangro-Pool (1890-1963) was an Estonian literary-, theatre- and art critic. He published literary fiction and cultural history reviews, art- and literary critical articles. His cultural problems analyzing writings are characterized by versatile spectrum of themes and publicist, often polemic style of formulation. "Art and Morals" is one of Kangro-Pool’s best known works. Inspired by creation of literary group Siuru, he wrote essay about art and morals relations. Poetry of Siuru members seemed to be very frank, some verses were extraordinary erotic for the public of that time. Marie Under, Henrik Visnapuu and … [Click Below for Full Description]

The boards are introduced by a text signed Jean Cocteau and represent costumes for Shakespeare (two Bergeres Paulina or Time). Original prints made ??for the illustration of The Gazette fashionable, one of the finest and most influential twentieth century fashion magazines, celebrating the talent of creators and artists French burgeoning art deco. Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, The Gazette fashionable appeared until 1925 with an interruption during the War of 1915 to 1920, due to mobilization of its editor. She is 69 Deliveries from just 2000 copies and is illustrated including 573 color plates and 148 sketches depicting models of fashion designers. 17 St Petersburgh Place: 15 April 1920 [i.e., 1921]. Single page of wove paper, torn from a larger sheet. 8 lines in ink in a fine hand. 1 vols. 8vo. Philby of Arabia to Browne of Persia. Brief note from H. St John Philby (1885-1960), Arabian explorer, father of Kim Philby, and later crony of Ibn Saud, conveying a copy of his lecture at the Royal Geographical Society, entitled Across Arabia : From the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, to the dean of Cambridge oriental studies, Edward Granville Browne (1862-1926), author of A Literary History of Persia (1902-1924) and cataloguer of the Islamic manuscript holdings in Cambridge libraries. Reading in part, "We did so enjoy seeing you & Mrs. Browne yesterday & I hope to see you next term at Cambridge if I can possibly get up there". Paris: Nrf, 1921. Fine. Nrf, Paris 1921, 14x19,5cm, broché. - First edition on ordinary paper, false mention of the sixth edition. Handsome autograph inscription from Marcel Proust to André Salmon. Covers uniformly browned, covers and upper corner of leaf with inscription skillfully reinforced. In his "Souvenirs sans fin [Memories without end]," Salmon recalls the circumstances of this unlikely 'meeting' between two distant literary worlds, the Bohemian world of the Montparnasse crowd and the aristocratic salons that Proust frequented: "I did not actually know Proust, but we corresponded. It was he who made the approach, in the most sublime and unexpected way. I had just given a reading of a realist fable at the Nouvelle Revue Française (in March 1920), called "Le Mannequin d'acajou [The Mahogany Mannequin]," something I never suspected could interest that observer, that fierce admirer - yes, subjugated and mistrustful - of the Duchess of Guermantes, Oriano - a hateful creature worthy of public exposure...Marcel Proust wrote to me straight after the reading of Le Mannequin d'acajou. He also sent me some of his books, with handsome inscriptions. I replied, of course, to Marcel Proust, but I never went to see him. Corresponding with him was important to me, but I could not resolve myself to go and visit him at his bedside... above all, to go and sit among so many others whose delights would never be my own. Obviously, there was no question of meeting Marcel Proust at midnight in the Ritz, where the staff did not know me. Was I wrong? In any case, Marcel Proust bore me no il … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE DEDICATION COPY OF HARTLEY'S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED BY MARSDEN HARTLEY ON THE DEDICATION PAGE TO ALFRED STIEGLITZ: "My dear Stieglitz, This is the book you saved from the chaos of a grim period. I hope it proved worth the trouble. I marvel that your faith abounds with such vitality. I take courage myself from your example. Devotedly, Marsden Hartley." On the facing page Stieglitz has written the date and location of the inscription in pencil, "April 14 - 1924. 60 E. 65 St."An association of tremendous importance ? Stieglitz was the first established artist or gallery owner to recognize and promote Hartley's talent. He mounted Hartley's first solo show at his 291 gallery in May of 1909 at a time when Hartley was a virtual unknown in the art world. "Poor and lonely, Hartley was moved by Stieglitz's tangible demonstration of faith in him and his art. At 291 he discovered the spiritual home he had long been seeking, and in Stieglitz he found a mentor who genuinely cared about his work and who was willing to nurture his creative development" (Homer, p. 153). Stieglitz would show Hartley's work five more times at 291 as well as at the Anderson Galleries, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. GREENVILLE ILLINOIS IL: (1921). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is an intriguing, original 1921 - 1922 manuscript diary handwritten by a young man, only identified by the initials L.R.M. who through some extensive detective work has been deduced as Leslie R. Marston notably the future Dr. Bishop Leslie R. Marston. Of note this diary has the unique characteristic of having a gift inscription from his then girlfriend along with notes and entries by his College girlfriend and later wife! Inscribed in one hand: "Christmas 1920; To Leslie from Grace" and then below in another hand: "My girlfriend during the First War" and under that in yet a third hand c1970s: "The doner, "Grace" was an "army girlfriend" somewhat younger than L. R. M. with who he corresponded while in military service and continued moderately early months thereafter. Then, along came Lila!" Lila is Lila Thompson who married Leslie on August 16th, 1921. This 3½ x 6¾ inch 80 percent or so full diary offers a unique look into the development of Leslie Marston the student to the teacher and Leslie Marston the swain to the husband with input from his wife when they were both students at Greenville College in Illinois and later on they move to Iowa City. Here are some snippets: 1921 "January 3rd, Entertained in honor of Tommie and Mary Chalmer's. Hostess, Lila Thompson, guests: Bernice Thompson, Crystal Davis, Ralph Zolviser, Dana King. Hours 8:00-11:30 P.M. My room." "January 8th, Secured part of my pay. Pasted picture of Candle (?) on bottom of Miss Thompson's water glass. Wretch! L. R. M. 1921. TSUDA SEIFÛ. [KAKEMONO - HANGING SCROLL] Tsuda SEIFÛ, artist. "MOMOKAWA" LANDSCAPE PAINTING OF A MOUNTAIN STREAM, DANCING CRANES. Hanging scroll, image size 135.2 X 33.4 cm. Beautifully mounted on brocade with BONE jiku. The painting is signed and sealed by Seifû (1880-1978), an extraordinarily influential artists and designer who painted in oils, in traditional watercolor on silk and paper, created designs and bookbindings, etc., etc. A protege of such masters as the designer Furuya Kôrin and the author and poet Natsume Sôseki and later an influence upon generations of creative artists, Seifû has here created a free and easy Nihonga work in color ink on silk, dated Taishô 10 [1921] and sealed by him. Its eccentric spirit seems to have a touch of Tomioka Tessai to it. Certainly they must have met, as Seifû illustrated several design books with calligraphed encomia done by Tessai in the 1900s. But, in any case, it is also reminiscent of some of the book-bindings he was doing during the same period. The brushwork and calligraphy are first-rate, the presentation impeccable. In a wooden box and worn outer cardboard slipcase with written title label.

Lev L'vovich Tolstoy (1869-1945)
Paris and Wiesbaden, 1921. Eight single leaves, some folded. Very good, with exception of one letter, with tear and some loss to text. The son of Lev Tolstoy, Lev L'vovich Tolstoy was a firm believer in his father's ideals in his youth, but later became increasingly opposed to his philosophical and ethical ideas. He studied sculpture with Rodin and tried, without success, to become a published writer, as well as writing about his childhood and impressions of his father. In 1918 he emigrated, living in Paris before eventually settling in Sweden. The letters included here date to a period when he wrote articles on his father and was making a difficult living as a journalist. Among other things, they contain his negative reaction to his mother's memoirs, discuss his own writing and plans to publish his recollections, and detail his financial woes. [Click Below for Full Description]
