(3) 12 plates. Original beige quarter cloth over boards with striking design and black lettering on cover. Illustrated lithographic title page. Striking example of Birnbaum's expressionistic work rendered in a series of 12 lithographic images depicting the apocalypse with a poetic introduction describing the struggle of human kind and the world beyond, accompanied by a vignette. Powerful sequence in Birnbaums distinct style. Printed under his supervision by the "Secession" Graphic Art Institute in Vienna on Japan paper. Signatures and titles in pencil underneath imagery. Text in German. Light wear along edges of portfolio and 4 inch tear at bottom of foredge flap, and crease in bottom flap. Uriel Birnbaum (1894-1956) was a self-taught Austrian Jewish painter, caricaturist and writer. Birnbaum illustrated a number of books, including books for Edgar Allan Poe and Lewis Carroll, and worked as an illustrator for the children's magazine "Der Regenbogen." He was awarded the literary Bauernfeld-Preis for his volume of sonnets "Gottes Krieg" in 1923. Due to his severe injury during W.W.I and his intermarriage he was protected from deportation but emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1921 - 1921 to 1934 Set of Wisdens Rebound with Covers,

1921. Hi, This lot is a set of 14 rebound Wisdens all of them are rebound with covers. This Wisden set is in Good to Very Good condition. The boards are a bit of a mix but I have tried to make them as similar as possible so all are a reddish brown, all the books are in decent shape and a good but not mint set. Some notes are that the 1930 has a mark to the front cover, 1927 has a LCCC stamp to the bottom of the front cover, 1926 is a bit dark, 1923 a bit tatty and the 1925 has a cup mark to the cover. The 1932 may have a facsimile front cover , it feels facsimile but odd to see that in a rebind. They are all excellent internally all with photoplates, a great value for money set. 7/10s on average. Subject to availability I can swap any book inside this run or extend or slightly reduce the run for a different cost, please enquire for details.

        Fete Carnaval 1921

Imp. Gandini, Nice 1921 - A rollicking cover illustration of a Pantagruel type astride a flamingo and a crowd of clowns and masqueraders below, perfecting evoking the joyful anarchy of Carnaval, and within, an eight panel panorama and program. Wraps are 27 by 19 cm, and the panels within are of slighly smaller dimension, with a total length, when stretched out, of 160 cm. Depicted on the panorama is a colorful parade of floats and various comical figures, with everything drawn with a deliberately crude, or naive, pen and brush that heightens the farcical flavor of the rendering. This panoramic brochure was issued as a souvenir for the Nice Carnaval, the pre-Lent celebration with roots in Nice going back to the Middle Ages and for which Nice had become famous, perhaps second only to the Carnaval of Venice, which in a number of ways Nice emulated. A parade to celebrate Carnaval was first done in 1873, and it is the parade that is the core of what is depicted here. It is unknown whether this program was issued for a particular event, or what seems more probable, as a more general souvenir. Scarce, with no copies of this edition of what was an annual located on OCLC, and only a few copies found of any edition (the 1898, 1899 and 1906 editions, one copy each: Bibliotheque Nationale; 1907 edition, two copies: Bayerische Staatsbibliotheque and the Deutsche Nationalbibliotheque). Wraps are soiled. Discrete tape repair running along the "joint". Endpapers and rear cover are filled with evocative ads. Several flattened creases, short closed tears and minor chips. The panorama itself is very well preserved with no significant issues. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Meynial 1921 - 12cm x 8cm. Cream silk covers illustrated in black and gold with designs by Barbier. All edges gilt and decorative borders and chapter headings. A fine book, near fine dustwrapper and slipcase. Decorative endpapers, pictorial title page, six pochoir colour plates in Art Deco style. The fifth Barbier almanac, a note to the reader tells us that this will be the final volume in the series of almanacs. Guirlandes des Mois is a series of almanacs produced by Jules Maynial and illustrated by George Barbier, the delightful little books (five in total) were published annually between 1917 - 1921. Barbier was a keen book collector and his own collection included a series of seventeenth - early nineteenth century almanacs and it was this collection which inspired the design of the Guirlandes. The books contain an anthology of writings, bank pages for notes and a calendar. The illustrations are beautifully delicate, with covers, dustwrappers and box all containing different drawings. Beginning in the war years many of the illustrations reflect the times, with images of soldiers on leave wooing elegant young women. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The investor's pocket manual.

New York: The Financial Press, 1921. 16mo (15.5 cm, 6.1"). 272 pp. Vol. XIII, no. 4 (May, 1921) of a monthly publication offering "current statistics, records and high and low prices of stocks and bonds of railroad, industrial, and mining corporations, also grain, cotton, coffee and provisions." The publisher advertised in contemporary magazines that copies of this "real help to investors" would be "furnished FREE by any investment house . . . on request," and the front wrapper of the present example identifies it as coming from Kurtz Brothers Bankers and Brokers at 1421 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. There is a great deal here on the structure and value of many, many individual companies.    => These ephemeral guidebooks are not widely institutionally held in the U.S., although a different, quarterly publication of the same title (published by E.A. Pierce & Co.) appears to be somewhat more common. Publisher's printed yellow paper wrappers; creased and lightly soiled, with inked date on spine and pencilled annotations on back wrapper. Text block just starting to pull away from wrappers. Pages age-toned; three leaves separated. => A useful snapshot of the American economy in the spring of 1921.

Funfzig Zeichnungen; Pastelle und Aquarelle Aus Dem Besitz Der Nationalgalerie.

Berlin - Julius Bard 1921 - 50 pastels and watercolours by the German artist Adolph Menzel, printed in Berlin under the Weimar Republic. Adolph Menzel was one of the most popular and significant 19th century German artists. His work was mostly produced and exhibited in Germany, and was there acquired quickly by national galleries. This in part accounts for his prominence and popularity within Germany. By the early 20th century he held a significant place within German culture. This book was produced in 1921, when the young Weimar Republic was about to enter a period of damaging hyperinflation, and faced many other threats to its stability besides. Moreover, the identity crisis in Germany following her defeat in the first world war was profound. One can see this work in that context, representing abeautiful artisticrelic of Germany's cultural florescence in the previous century. This is number 266 of 400 copies numbered by hand. Collated: completeCondition: In quarter vellum with paper covered boards. Externally sound with a little wear to the extremities and some marking to the spine.         Pro Lisu i Kolobok. Russkaia skazka [About the Fox and the Runaway Bun: A Russian Fairy Tale]. Five copies, in variant pochoir wrappers.; Detskaia biblioteka [Children's Library]

      J. Povolozky, Paris 1921 - Octavos (18.5 × 13.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers pasted over blind self-wrappers (as issued); 8 pp. Wrappers illustrated with five variant pochoir patterns. Numerous small vignettes in the text. Very good. Russian fairy tale printed for children of Russian émigrés in France, with illustrations by the ten-year-old Zhenya Kovarskaya, the daughter of Ilya Kovarskii and Lidiia Kovarskaia, an editor-and-publisher duo which had left Soviet Russia in 1919. Each of the five copies features a variant wrapper, decorated by hand using different patterns, most likely using the pochoir technique. Given small irregularities, it appears likely that this work was also carried out by children. The publisher, J. Povolozky, ran a gallery in Paris in the 1920s and was known for his collaboration with Russian avant-garde artists Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. KVK, OCLC show copies (one each) at NYPL, Princeton, Stanford, and UNC Chapel Hill, without specifying which of the wrapper variants are held. Not at the Russian State or National Library. Not in Savine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
