The theory of play and integral equations with skew symmetric kernels," "On games that involve chance and the skill of players," and "On systems of linear skew-symmetric determinant and the genera theory of play" WITH NASH, John. ?Two Person Coperative Games? (Econometrica 21, January 1953), pp. 97-117

Initially he maintained that games with more possible strategies would not have minimax solutions, but by 1927, he considered this an open question as he had been unable to find a counterexample? (Walker, An Outline of the History of Game Theory).WITH: John Nash?s fourth and final paper seminal contribution to non-cooperative game theory wherein he set an entirely new research agenda commonly referred to as the Nash Program for cooperative games.CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. 10 X 7 inches (250 x 175mm). ASHURA CHO^

1921. Very Good. [EHON] Ito Chuta. ASHURA CHO Dai Go-kan. Tokyo: Kokusui Shuppansha, (Arata Eisuke), Taisho 10 [1921]. 5 volumes complete. Bound in printed cloth over [25.6 x 21.4 cm] boards with thongs. Entitled (roughly) "Demon Sketchbook". The Asuras of the title are the warrior gods of Indian religion, condemned to constant strife. The book is a deeply bitter and ironic look at the politics and social scene of the World War I era, not only in Japan itself, but around the world. As such it is an amazing slice of life during and after the world war from the unique perspective of a Japanese humanist given to Swiftian excess. The author (and illustrator), Ito Chuta, was an architect and gifted caricaturist. The printer/publisher was a bit of an ironist himself, as the closing note mentions that his "National Purity Publications" ["Kokusui Shuppansha"] did not quite embody the usual "National Purity" which was being bruited about. Obviously this work is a product of Taisho liberalism. Ten or so years earlier or later, it would have never reached the light of day in a less tolerant political atmosphere. There are 500 pages of plates, each is one-half color woodcut caricature and one-half wry commentary in a combination of letterpress and woodcut calligraphy. Well-printed and interesting, the full set of 500 plates in five volumes - with the original clasped cases - is quite a find, as one only occasionally finds even odd volumes. The cases are a bit chipped, the outer boxes very unusual, the contents are quite clean, in very good overall condition.

Two Typed Letters, signed, to Edward A. Filene, of the American Chamber of Commerce, regarding the work of the Commission in Germany

Coblenz, Germany, 14 october, 1921 - The Interallied Rhineland High Commission was a civil body formed after World War I to govern occupied Germany on the Rhineland. During the summer of 1921, representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce had visited the Commission in Coblenz to voice their concerns about the lack of a European market for American exports - both agricultural and industrial. Following that visit, Stone writes this lengthy, and confidential analysis to Boston merchant Filene, outlining America's goals, the goals of the various members of the Commission, and the divergence of national interests amongst the allies. In particular, the policy of the French being to ensure its security against any future German aggression; the policy of the US, Stone reassures the Chamber of Commerce, being one of opening markets. Stone writes, prophetically: "The relations between France and Germany are the key to the situation in Europe at the present time." 4to. 10 pp., and a 3 pp. cover letter, on "Interallied Rhineland High Commission" stationery; the first with numerous corrections in ink; both marked "Personal" in pencil. Some wear at edges, slight soiling, old pinholes; overall, quite good. In green and grey morocco-backed clam shell box

London: Allan Wingate. Hardcover. 552 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. Signed and inscribed by author upon front free endpaper. "One of the most important autobiographies of the post-war period, for there can be few personalities still alive who have been so intimately connected with the march of world events for so many years... His first great triumph was to rescue the German Mark from the inflation of 1921... As the Nazi avalanche swelled, Hitler persuaded him to occupy the Presidential chair at the Reichsbank... but (Schacht) soon saw that the Fuhrer was driving relentlessly towards war. A quarrel resulted and he left the Government, remaining under a cloud until he was arrested towards the close of the regime." - from dust jacket. Moderate wear to book. Binding intact. Slight faint toning to endpapers. Tiny instance of a faint trace of erased pencil. Rear endpaper has a tiny piece of paper adhered to edge. Flaws overstated and description is hypercritical. English Homes

London: Country Life & George Newnes, Ltd.,, 1921–37. Norman and Plantagenent; Medieval and Early Early Tudor; Early Tudor; Late Tudor and Early Stuart, 2 volumes; Late Stuart; Sir John Vanbrugh and his School; Early Georgian; Late Georgian. 9 volumes, folio. Original blue buckram-backed mid-blue cloth, title gilt to spines and upper boards, gilt rule to the spine edges, all edges gilt apart from volumes I & II, volume II which is entirely ungilded, blue marbled endpapers. With the dust jackets. Frontispiece to each volume and all copiously illustrated throughout. The jackets a little tanned at the spines and with some minor chipping, creasing and a few edge-splits, but overall this is a wonderfully preserved set. First editions, first impressions save for volume II of periods I and II, Mediaeval & Early Tudor - which was published out of sequence in 1936, this an early impression dated 1937. Remains a foundation text for the study of English English domestic architecture. In reviewing the issue of volume I, Architecture ("The Professional Architectural Monthly") commented on the scope and ambitions of the series; "This volume forms, it might be said, the undercroft on which the upper stories of English architectural development are reared. In it are laid the bases of the evolutionary history of house-planning, designing, and decorating in the land throughout all succeeding phases of both Gothic and Renaissance styles. But while the main purpose is architectural, here as throughout the series, the human element is kept well to the fore by narration of the home and public life of the owners of the various castles and manor-houses that are carefully described and profusely illustrated" (July, 1921) H. Avray Tipping (1855–1933 originally wrote for The Garden - he was a garden designer in the Arts and Crafts style being a friend of Gertrude Jekyll and Harold Peto - but when that journal was absorbed into Country Life in 1905 he became one of its principle writers. In 1907 he became the Architectural Editor, a post he held more or less continually until 1930. Tipping is widely recognised as one of the leading figures in the development of the study of the evolution of English architecture. His co-author on the Vanbrugh volume, Christopher Hussey, was the son of a friend, who Tipping encouraged to go up to Oxford, and then employed on the staff at Country Life, "during the next fifty years he contributed nearly 1400 signed articles, as well as being editor from 1933 to 1940" (ODNB). In his Obituary in the Garden History Society's newsletter - he too was a keen gardener and wrote extensively on historic gardens - Arthur Hellyer described his writing as setting "a new standard in erudition combined with readability." Hussey was the author of a three volume study of Georgian Country Houses, long held to be the standard work. A highly desirable set of this important publication.
