Roosevelt Personally Writes a Child Hoping She Will Receive Treatment at Warm Springs

Roosevelt Personally Writes a Child Hoping She Will Receive Treatment at Warm Springs.& & In 1921, 39-year-old Franklin D. Roosevelt seemed to face a future of unlimited success. But that same year he contracted polio, and was left paralyzed from the waist down. At the time there was no known cause of, or cure for, polio, and the practice of the day was to hide anyone with the disability away from the public eye. Roosevelt was a fighter and was determined to walk again, and found hope after hearing about a young polio victim who learned to walk again after swimming in the waters of a health spa at Warm Springs inear Atlanta. He moved there in 1924, and his initial cynicism about the run-down conditions and pitiable patients was gradually replaced by a deep empathy and understanding for the suffering of others, along with an optimism and inspiration that polio victims could be helped. When Warm Springs, a former resort area, faced economic hardship in 1926, FDR invested two-thirds of his savings to purchase it for $200,000, and created a therapeutic center under the direction of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. His facility opened its doors to patients all over the country, providing medical treatment and an opportunity to spend time with others suffering from the effects of polio. An enclosed pool funded by automotive pioneer Henry Ford's son Edsel was added, and improvements began to be made. Physicians and physiotherapists worked with Roosevelt to develop muscle exercises. The "spirit of Warm Springs" became firmly entrenched as patients relearned to function in society and to laugh and enjoy life.& & Roosevelt took a very personal interest in those who were afflicted with polio, many of whom were children. Lenora Burge, a ten year old, wrote him while he was serving as governor of New York, expressing her hope to go to Warm Springs, and he took the time to answer her personally.& & Typed Letter Signed on his Executive Chambers letterhead, Albany, November 14, 1932, to Lenora Burge. "Thank you very much for your delightful little note of October 31st and good wishes. I am very glad to know that you are so anxious to visit Warm Springs and I am asking Dr. Hoke, the physician in charge, to send you details of the place. I hope very much you may find it possible to take the treatment there. We do have a Patient's Aid Fund but the waiting list is a very large one. Since you are only eleven years old possibly some of the organizations in your vicinity such as the Elks, the Rotary, the Kiwanis, or similar organizations might assist in procuring the necessary funds."& & After his inauguration as president in 1933, FDR continued to visit Warm Springs and mingle with the patients there. He chose a secluded hillside near the springs to build a home, which soon became known as the Little White House. He died there in 1945.

(ELUARD, PAUL). Eluard, Paul. Preface by Jean Paulhan. PAUL ELUARD: LES NECESSITES DE LA VIE ET LES CONSEQUENCES DES REVES - AN EXTRAORDINARY SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY. Signed Presentation Copy from the Author. Paris: au Sans Pariel, 1921. First Edition 1/600. 8vo. Printed Wrappers. Poetry Monograph. Very Good. 78pp, no illustrations. Text in French. "Les Nécessités de la Vie et Les Conséquences des Rêves" is Paul Eluard's 1921 collection of proto-surrealist poems and prose - one of the French literary titan's earliest publications. A handsome example of the uncommon au Sans Pareil first printing in an unprinted glassine jacket numbered 563 from the edition of six hundred copies on papier vélin bouffant BOLDLY INSCRIBED "a Paul Morand, aux fils de mon amitié, Paul Eluard" in black ink on the front free endpaper showing some typical age-toning to the pages along with a slight dent at the upper foredge corner. Hailing from a privileged cultural background, Paul Morand was a prolific writer well-known by Picasso and the Dada and Surrealist Circles in Paris between the wars. He is probably currently best remembered for having collaborated with Coco Chanel on her memoirs - as his views on race, anti-Semitism, and complicity with the Nazis during the Vichy occupation have left his literary reputation rather tarnished.         Two Typed Letters, signed, to Edward A. Filene, of the American Chamber of Commerce, regarding the work of the Commission in Germany

Coblenz Germany 14 october 1921 Coblenz, Germany, 14 october, 1921. 4to. 10 pp., and a 3 pp. cover letter, on "Interallied Rhineland High Commission" stationery; the first with numerous corrections in ink; both marked "Personal" in pencil. Some wear at edges, slight soiling, old pinholes; overall, quite good. In green and grey morocco-backed clam shell box . The Interallied Rhineland High Commission was a civil body formed after World War I to govern occupied Germany on the Rhineland. During the summer of 1921, representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce had visited the Commission in Coblenz to voice their concerns about the lack of a European market for American exports - both agricultural and industrial. Following that visit, Stone writes this lengthy, and confidential analysis to Boston merchant Filene, outlining America's goals, the goals of the various members of the Commission, and the divergence of national interests amongst the allies. In particular, the policy of the French being to ensure its security against any future German aggression; the policy of the US, Stone reassures the Chamber of Commerce, being one of opening markets. Stone writes, prophetically: "The relations between France and Germany are the key to the situation in Europe at the present time."

1921. Very Good. [EHON - Album] Ikeda Terukata, et al. IMAYO FUJIN-GA. Tokyo: Kokkeido, n.d. (c. 1900s). Decorated cloth-covered orihon folding album, with printed paper title label. 12.1 x 17.6 cm. There are twelve double-page images showing the chores and amusements of cultured wives and mothers of the day. The images have the dreamy and elegiac feeling that depictions of women in late-Meiji seem to share. The images are attributed to "Toshikata's companions", including Terukata [1883-1921], who did the majority of these prints. Toshikata (1866-1908), a student of both Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Watanabe Seitei, had many students and was an influential member of the ukiyoe genre in his day, as styles from many sources (Shijo, ukiyo-e, western-style) began to merge into the Nihonga of the 20th century. Terukata was an important member of the group around him. This copy has no colophon per se, but it appears to be complete overall. It is very good internally, in good impressions and color. A lovely example of the genre.

        Das Mampampe-Buch

Leipzig: Abel & Müller, (1921). (19)ff., printed on rectos only. This boldly illustrated German children’s book tells the story of Mampampe, a young African boy who, despite his mother’s warnings, leaves home in order to explore the wilderness and runs into a fearsome lion. The covers and each page are illustrated in full color, and the endpapers feature a repeating design of Mampampe’s face. The story is reminiscent of Little Black Sambo, and the characters are drawn using stereotypical racist caricatures similar to Sambo’s controversial illustrations. Some wear to extremities, and spine shows some light soiling, else fine in pictorial paper boards.
