1921. Very Good. [EHON - Album] Ikeda Terukata, et al. IMAYO FUJIN-GA. Tokyo: Kokkeido, n.d. (c. 1900s). Decorated cloth-covered orihon folding album, with printed paper title label. 12.1 x 17.6 cm. There are twelve double-page images showing the chores and amusements of cultured wives and mothers of the day. The images have the dreamy and elegiac feeling that depictions of women in late-Meiji seem to share. The images are attributed to "Toshikata's companions", including Terukata [1883-1921], who did the majority of these prints. Toshikata (1866-1908), a student of both Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Watanabe Seitei, had many students and was an influential member of the ukiyoe genre in his day, as styles from many sources (Shijo, ukiyo-e, western-style) began to merge into the Nihonga of the 20th century. Terukata was an important member of the group around him. This copy has no colophon per se, but it appears to be complete overall. It is very good internally, in good impressions and color. A lovely example of the genre.

        Das Mampampe-Buch

Leipzig: Abel & Müller, (1921). (19)ff., printed on rectos only. This boldly illustrated German children’s book tells the story of Mampampe, a young African boy who, despite his mother’s warnings, leaves home in order to explore the wilderness and runs into a fearsome lion. The covers and each page are illustrated in full color, and the endpapers feature a repeating design of Mampampe’s face.         Archways of Life

Moffat Yard and Company New York: Moffat, Yard and Company. 1921. First. First edition. Papercovered boards with printed label. Small label of the Churchill Book and Print Shop in Los Angeles, erosion on the spine, sunning and corners of the board rubbed, a good copy. Poetry by the remarkable Cuban-American lesbian poet, playwright, and socialite reputed to have conducted lesbian affairs with Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne, Isadora Duncan, Katharine Cornell, and Maude Adams, among others. A very amusing copy. Mabel Normand's copy with her bookplate, and Inscribed by her to herself: "For 'Mayme' with love from her friend with all the word friendship means. Mabel." Additionally Normand has Signed her name "Mabel" at 19 different poems that apparently appealed to her and at one other poem as "Mayme." Additionally she has made comments at a couple of poems (one reads "I love this"). There is also a later, apparently unrelated ownership signature. Normand was a fascinating character in her own right, a silent film star, comedienne, and apparent hedonist who lead a colorful life until her death at 37. She carried on a long affair with Mack Sennett, helped foster the career of Charlie Chaplin, wrote and directed many of her own films, was entangled in the murder of her friend and fellow bibliophile, the director William Desmond Taylor (she departed his house after borrowing some books from him, and was the last known person to see him alive), as well as in the shooting of oil broker and golfer Courtland S. Dines (shot by her chauffeur with her pistol). In 1920 she played a "split-personality" role as "Mayme" and "Rosa" in the film What Happened to Rosa? Hence our attribution of this book as being inscribed to herself. .

Sabatini, Rafael: Three ALS (Autograph Letters Signed)

Battersea and Cardiganshire, 1921 Battersea and Cardiganshire, Great Britain, 1921 and 1922. Standard letter folds, minor age discoloration and peripheral wear, else Very Good Plus. Three original ALS by Sabatini - author of such landmark masterpieces as Scaramouche, Captain Blood, The Sea-Hawk, Fortune Fool, Saint Martin's Summe and a lengthy list of other titles. Sabatini was just beginning earning to earn international renown for his lush, textured prose and swashbuckling, romantic plots when he wrote these letters. Two were written in 1921 - the year of publication of Scaramouche, considered by many to be his most brilliant work. The other was written in 1922, the year of publication of Captain Blood. Those two titles remain today the most valuable Sabatini first editions. That his life was becoming hectic in those years at the height of his genius is evidenced by these letters: hard to read, they nonetheless all express regrets for his being unable to attend one function or another. Cloth lightly rubbed at extremities, spines and edges of boards tanned. An excellent set. Fourth edition, from the text of the best edition, the revised third. Geschichte und Kritik der Kapitalzins-Theorien was the first part of Böhm-Bawerk's extended opus magnus Capital and Interest, which is "an exhaustive survey of the alternative treatments of the phenomenon of interest: use theories, productivity theories, abstinence theories, and many more. Most significant in this early work is his devastating critique of the exploitation theory, as embraced by Karl Marx and his forerunners: Capitalists do not exploit workers; they accommodate workers—by providing them with income well in advance of the revenue from the output they helped to produce" (Roger W. Garrison, Biography of Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Ludwig von Mises website). Mises described Capital and Interest as "the most eminent contribution to modern economic theory".

        Zsuzsa Bergengóciában

(Budapest): Sacelláry, 1921. Quarto. (26)ff., + 22 plates. One of 500 numbered copies. A Hungarian ABC book with a poetical verse printed in red and black and a color illustration for each of the twenty-two letters in the Hungarian alphabet. The text is that of a fairy tale, and the brightly-colored illustrations reflect the fantastical elements of the story while incorporating elements of Hungarian folk art. Lajos Kozma was a well-known Hungarian Modernist architect, interior and furniture designer, and graphic artist who was interested in Magyar nepmuveszet, or the Hungarian national artistic tradition. He studied folk art in rural areas of Hungary and was influenced by the Wiener Werkstatte, founding the Budapester Werkstatte, the Hungarian version of the workshop, in 1913. Kozma completed the illustrations for this book in 1918, and they strongly reflect traditional Hungarian motifs. Light wear to extremities and owner's inscription to lower corner of title page, else fine in blue paper-covered boards, with gilt decorations to front cover and a gilt-stamped tan cloth spine.
