        The Book of Jockeys. 1921

1921. Chintz fabric covering boards. Very Good. Oblong, 14.5 by 25 cm. 15 pp. with pasted cut-outs representing nabobs of British society in jockey attire, followed by numerous blank leaves. Some of the figures depicted are Sol [Solomon] Joel (1865-1931), who made a diamond and gold mine fortune in South Africa and was a successful thoroughbred breeder; the first Lord Queenborough, or Almeric Hugh Paget (1861-1949), industrialist, politician and sportsman, known for good works and later, Fascist sympathies; Marquess of Zetland, or Lawrence Dundas (1844-1929), Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for a time; the Duke of Westminster; Lord Derby; Lord Sallon; Anthony de Rothschild; Lord Furness; Lord Lascelles; and on and on. Proverbially, horse racing is the sport of kings, and this album is evidence of that with its 104 figures in all. Alicia Muspratt is a listed artist whose oil paintings regularly appear at auction. The album, though, is not about serious painting. With its crude cut-outs, which the artist has painted over to create a huge variety of colorful costume, it is a fun item, a gentle parody of a children's album, quite possibly. It is a safe bet that Muspratt was a devotee of the race track, and the odds are even the album was made as a part of a celebratory occasion. For us, the interest lies in its quirky appeal, its uniqueness, and its capturing for us a slice of the sporting world of yesteryear. The homemade chintz fabric cover, with a cut-out pasted on top of it, deepens the charm of the album.

A NOBLE FRAGMENT: Being a Leaf of The Gutenberg Bible 1450 - 55

New York:: Gabriel Wells,. 1921. Only edition. Reportedly one of 600 copies. Designed by Bruce Rogers and printed by William Edwin Rudge. Introduction by A. Edward Newton. This "greatest of all printed books," the Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed from movable type in the Western hemisphere. Every leaf, or fragment, of this Bible represents a rare tangible piece of cultural history, and an immense achievement in the art and craft of printing. "Its printers were competing in the market hitherto supplied by the producers of high-class manuscripts. The design of the book and the layout of the book were therefore based on the book-hand and manuscript design of the day, and a very high standard of press-work was required--and obtained--to enable the new mechanical product to compete successfully with its hand-produced rivals. Standards were set in quality of paper and blackness of ink, in design and professional skill, which the printers of later generations have found difficult to maintain." (Printing and the Mind of Man.) Only forty-eight copies of the bible are known, most of which are incomplete. This leaf was removed from the imperfect Mannheim-Zouch-Sabin copy after it was acquired by the New York bookseller Gabriel Wells, who broke it up to produce this leaf book. Folio, (actual leaf 15 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches; 393 x 287 mm.), Original full black blindstamped morocco by Stikeman & Co., front cover lettered in gilt. Gilt turn-ins, grey endpapers. [6] pp. of text, with portion of title-page and one initial letter printed in red. Head and foot of spine lightly worn, with scant third-inch at base of spine chipped away. ORIGINAL LEAF FROM THE GUTENBERG BIBLE TIPPED-IN: Printed on recto and verso, black gothic lettering, forty-two lines, double columns. Rubricated in red, with headlines, chapter numbers, and large initial letters (supplied, as is often the case) in red and blue. The leaf in this copy is very clean except for very minor foxing to margins; the ink is still very black and crisp. The text is the Vulgate Latin text of Jeremiah 24:15 through 17. "Therefore saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed." There are three two-line initials (two 'E's' and one 'P'), three Roman numeral verse numbers, and the headline, all hand-inked alternately in red and blue.

        A Book for Kids

Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1921. Quarto, colour frontispiece and title, numerous illustrations in the text; original decorated boards, cloth spine with hinges repaired; some wear to boards, including scuffing at edges of front board, a few marks, but in good condition for this title. Scarce first edition: the only children's book from the pen of iconic poet and Aussie larrikin C. J. Dennis. This is an interesting association copy inscribed by the publisher George Robertson to Captain Arthur W. Jose. Loosely tipped in is a doggerel note from "P.R." (possibly the author P.R. Stephensen) thanking the owner for loaning the book, and lamenting the difficulty of earning a quid by writing rhymes for children. A Book for Kids comprises playful verse and rhyme with two short stories, respectively titled 'The Little Red House' and 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset'. It is a fresh and sometimes eccentric production, enhanced by the author's simple yet confident line drawings. The striking cover illustration was also created by Dennis. 'C.J. Dennis' one lasting contribution to children's literature was A Book for Kids, which, with its entertaining prose, rollicking verse and the author's own naïve but charming drawings, had enjoyed constant popularity ever since its first appearance in 1921' (McVitty, Authors and Illustrators of Australian Children's Books p. 57). The two short stories offer an innovative contrast to the literary conventions of the time, and appeal directly to the imagination of younger readers. Of 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset' Saxby writes 'Dennis avoids the error of trying to moralize or teach a lesson from nature, and captures the imaginative feeling of a child caught up in the clouds and absorbed into the sunset'.

Autograph letter signed to an unidentified male correspondent (possibly the noted teacher and pianist Isidore Philipp)

1 page. Quarto. Dated November 24, 1921. An interesting letter in which Busoni discusses his forthcoming tour, mentions [?Gabriel] Pierné, the performance of various works, etc. "… today I decided and I have accepted a tour in England. It will be over at the end of February and I will be able to return by way of Paris and team up with Pierné for a Mozart concerto (if he wishes!)" Busoni goes on to write of a concert of music for two pianos that he performed with his "great student [Egon] Petri: Mozart sonata, improvisation on Bach, duettino concertante, a contrapuntal fantasy for 2 pianos (the latest form of the work). I would like to repeat it in Paris. And again!" Somewhat worn, foxed, and creased; small tears to right edge; slightly split at central fold; ca. 50mm. split to blank lower right corner. . "Much to his detriment as composer and aesthetician, [Busoni] was lionized as a keyboard virtuoso. The focus of his interests as a performer lay in Bach, Mozart and Liszt, while he deplored Wagner. Rejecting atonality and advocating in its place a Janus-faced 'Junge Klassizität', he anticipated many later developments in the 20th century. His interests ranged from Amerindian folk music and Gregorian chant to new scales and microtones, from Cervantes and E.T.A. Hoffmann to Proust and Rilke. Only gradually, during the final decades of the 20th century, has his significance as a creative artist become fully apparent." Antony Beaumont in Grove online Petri (1881-1962), a noted German-born pianist, was intimately associated with Busoni. Active in the USA from the time of his American debut in 1932, he went on to teach at both Cornell University and Mills College. "From 1901, when he joined Busoni's masterclass at Weimar, the piano became his chosen instrument. Busoni took a deep interest in his development and later described him as being his ‘most genuine pupil’. Petri corrected the manuscripts of Busoni's operas and piano works, and also collaborated with him in editing Bach's keyboard works..." "... Although a large-scale player in the Busoni mould, Petri's playing differed in many respects to that of his teacher. He was considerably more dutiful in regard to both correct style and adherence to the printed text. In contrast to the tonal richness of Busoni's playing, Petri's piano sound frequently had a rough edge to it. His playing was noted for a massiveness of conception and for its dedicated interpretative insight. Particularly admired in Bach, Beethoven and Liszt, Petri was also a staunch advocate of his mentor's compositions, a number of which he recorded." James Methuen Campbell in Grove online Busoni's possible correspondent, Isidore Philippe (1863-1958), was a renowned teacher, at the Paris Conservatoire from 1903-1934, the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau from 1921-1933, privately in Paris until 1940, and in New York from 1941-1956.

        THE SISTER'S TRAGEDY [wrapper title]

9, Longwall, Oxford. [dated at end 7 October 1921].. 9, Longwall, Oxford. [dated at end 7 October 1921].. [1],20 leaves. Quarto. Mechanically duplicated typescript, printed on rectos only, cord bound in typed wrappers. Wrappers rather spotted and chipped, internally very good. An early acting script of the author's first published play, with the above address on the upper wrapper and title leaf in ink, in his hand, and with at least one correction and one revision in ink in the text. The play was first performed privately at John Masefield's house on 24 January 1922, with the first public performance following in May. Comparison with the published text (Blackwell, 1922, following the public performance) reveals forthcoming tinkerings with stage mechanics, and the addition of at least one line of dialogue, at the end.
