Travels in Arabia Deserta. With a new Preface by the Author, Introduction by T.E. Lawrence, and all the Original Maps, Plans and Cuts

London: Jonathan Cape and the Medici Society (Philip Warner), 1921., 1921. FIRST EDITION THUS. 2 volumes, large octavo. With folding colour map in pocket at end of volume I, frontispieces, and numerous maps, plans and illustrations (some folding), pp.(xxvi), 623; (xiv), 690. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, with coated black endpapers, top edge gilt. Some minor wear, extremities sunned, cloth a little rubbed, spine tips frayed. Very good indeed. Originally published in 1888 at the Cambridge University Press, this important Cape edition is entirely reset, with a new preface by Doughty and an essay by T.E. Lawrence. During the Great War Lawrence urged the British Government to issue serial parts of this work as a handbook for officers serving in Arabia. Following hostilities he lobbied to republish the whole book. Duckworth and Doubleday declined and eventually Medici employee Herbert J. Cape, who appreciated Doughty's work, took up the challenge and produced this brand new edition of 500 copies, being the first ever book from Jonathan Cape, Publisher, on 15th January 1921, sold at a nosebleed inducing price of nine guineas (about £1000 today). Six large paper copies signed by Doughty and Lawrence were produced, and a quick reprint followed without the Lawrence note, withdrawn by him "because it's in bad taste". Various places, 1921 and 1922.. 4to and 8vo. Altogether 40 pp. on 25 ff.. Very comprehensive collection of private letters written to his last love, Rose Ader (1890-1955). "Between 1921 and 1923, Puccini enjoyed what was likely his last romantic fling when he fell passionately in love with a young German soprano, Rose Ader, for whom he created the part of Liu in his final work, Turandot'" (The New Grove Dictionary). "My good and sweet Rosa", Puccini wrote on April 17, 1921, on one of his earliest letters to Rose, "I am deeply moved as I write you. I would wish to be able to tell you what I have in my heart - if only you could understand! Besides the distance which separates us there is the matter of the language which prevents us from saying all that we have in our hearts - what good fortune that I should have met you and what misfortune not to be able to speak together! I would have such riches in expression with which to express my great love! A love which will be with me all my life - you cannot imagine what an impression you made on me! Your languid eyes which when they looked at me strike my heart as though to seek an echo of an immense affection. I shall never be able to forge you - my Rosa what will happen to me. How can I bear being so far away. Yet it is necessary to suffer and to wait. Life is all one waiting and one suffering! Study, study, I beg you on my knees. Study with ardor and feverishly a little of my language. I believe that guided by the love that you have for me you will soon succeed in understanding me. That day will be one of the most beautiful ones of our life. Write to me even in German. I shall have your letter translated. If with the help of Mrs. S... you wish to write in French I shall not let the eyes of a stranger see your letter. I shall write you every week and even more often than that. How clearly I write! Never have I written in this manner - for you, my joy, I do everything [...]" (transl. from the Italian original).

Probably the finest copy extant."Pirates, Buccaneers, Marooners, those cruel but picturesque sea wolves who once infested the Spanish Main, all live in present-day conceptions in great degree as drawn by the pen and pencil of Howard Pyle. Pyle, artist-author, living in the latter half of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth, had the fine faculty of transposing himself into any chosen period of history and making its people flesh and blood again --- not just historical puppets. His characters were sketched with both words and picture; with both words and picture he ranks as a master, with a rich personality which makes his work individual and attractive in either medium… Important and interesting to the student of history, the adventure-lover, and the artist, as they are, these Pirate stories and pictures have been scattered through many magazines and books. Here, in this volume, they are gathered together for the first time, perhaps not just as Mr. Pyle would have done, but with a completeness and appreciation of the real value of the material which the author's modesty might not have permitted." (Merle Johnson, Foreword).Frederick W. Skiff (1867-1947), of Portland, Oregon, was a notable bibliophile and prolific collector of Americana. He also authored several books. His collection was sold in 1947 by the San Francisco auction house, Butterfield & Butterfield.BAL, 16416

London: Allan Wingate. Hardcover. 552 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. Signed and inscribed by author upon front free endpaper. "One of the most important autobiographies of the post-war period, for there can be few personalities still alive who have been so intimately connected with the march of world events for so many years... His first great triumph was to rescue the German Mark from the inflation of 1921... As the Nazi avalanche swelled, Hitler persuaded him to occupy the Presidential chair at the Reichsbank... but (Schacht) soon saw that the Fuhrer was driving relentlessly towards war. A quarrel resulted and he left the Government, remaining under a cloud until he was arrested towards the close of the regime." - from dust jacket. Moderate wear to book. Binding intact. Above-average wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. As the world again faces the spectre of hyperinflation this copy should prove a sound investment. . Good. 1955. The Book of Jockeys. 1921

1921. Chintz fabric covering boards. Very Good. Oblong, 14.5 by 25 cm. 15 pp. with pasted cut-outs representing nabobs of British society in jockey attire, followed by numerous blank leaves. Some of the figures depicted are Sol [Solomon] Joel (1865-1931), who made a diamond and gold mine fortune in South Africa and was a successful thoroughbred breeder; the first Lord Queenborough, or Almeric Hugh Paget (1861-1949), industrialist, politician and sportsman, known for good works and later, Fascist sympathies; Marquess of Zetland, or Lawrence Dundas (1844-1929), Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for a time; the Duke of Westminster; Lord Derby; Lord Sallon; Anthony de Rothschild; Lord Furness; Lord Lascelles; and on and on. Proverbially, horse racing is the sport of kings, and this album is evidence of that with its 104 figures in all. Alicia Muspratt is a listed artist whose oil paintings regularly appear at auction. The album, though, is not about serious painting. With its crude cut-outs, which the artist has painted over to create a huge variety of colorful costume, it is a fun item, a gentle parody of a children's album, quite possibly. It is a safe bet that Muspratt was a devotee of the race track, and the odds are even the album was made as a part of a celebratory occasion. For us, the interest lies in its quirky appeal, its uniqueness, and its capturing for us a slice of the sporting world of yesteryear. The homemade chintz fabric cover, with a cut-out pasted on top of it, deepens the charm of the album.
