[Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50] . [Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50]& . Near Fine. Pictorial cloth-bound album. Folio. 13 1/4” x 13 1/4”. Approximately 55 pages on about 30 leaves (plus a number remaining blank). A few elements apparently missing, some items loose and laid-in. Else generally fine. Fascinating and informative scrapbook of a noted miniature painter, Berta Carew. Includes letters and invitations from curators, notices of acceptance, programs from various shows/exhibits, award certificates, newspaper and catalog clippings relating to exhibitions (many reproducing her contributions), etc. Of special note are the more than forty commercial photographs (both mounted and loose) Ms. Carew had taken of her miniatures (in addition to the roughly equal number reproduced in the aforementioned clippings and programs). These professional photos (all black-and-white) provide a sharp, detailed close-up of each miniature, and in many cases the artist has additionally noted the title and buyer. Ms. Carew was something of a socialite judging by correspondence and addresses, but evidently took her career as a miniature painter quite seriously. She was a member of the British Academy of Arts and the American Society of Miniature Painters. She exhibited perhaps most prominently at the Met's 1950 show “Four Centuries of Miniature Painting” (program laid in). In effect, a personally assembled catalogue raisonné.

New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only by Boni and Liveright, 1921.. New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only by Boni and Liveright, 1921.. Two volumes. large octavo. Publisher's parchment and paper over boards, leather labels. Spines rather rubbed and darkened, labels worn, some foxing throughout volume one, small tear at top edge of pp. 101-110 in volume two, otherwise a good set in a half-morocco folding box. First U.S. limited edition. One of 1250 sets, this one unnumbered. With marks, revisions and annotations (in pencil and ink) in the text and margins of 41 pages of the first volume. The pencil annotations are in an unidentified hand (but see below); the ink revisions, deletions and corrections are by Moore, and are, in many instances, written over the penciled emendations. In addition, on pp. 51 and 69, sections of the text are crossed out, and typescript revisions are mounted onto the margin beneath. Loosely- inserted in the first volume is a typed letter, signed (one page, quarto, 121, Ebury Street, London, 2 June 1922) from Moore to "My dear MacColl," concerning the possibility of revising the book: "I shall be very glad to hear if you have finished reading 'Heloise and Abelard.' I hope you have not made many corrections on the margin, for I cannot rewrite the book. All I can do is to avail myself of your taste in correcting a few expressions that are not part of the key that I have chosen to write in..." Letter a bit soiled and worn, creased at center fold, torn at upper edge. The recipient of Moore's letter (and perhaps the reader responsible for the pencil annotations in the first volume), may have been Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1948); English painter and art critic. He served as keeper of the Tate Gallery from 1906-1911 and keeper of the Wallace Collection 1911-1924. He and Moore had known each other since at least the 1890s when the two men were concurrently art critics, the former for The Spectator, the latter for The Speaker. MacColl and Moore ". . . together may be said to have conducted the propaganda of the 'nineties for the work of the French Impressionists in England." See Joseph Hone, THE LIFE OF GEORGE MOORE, New York, 1936, p.178). GILCHER A40b.

        Architectural Heresies of a Painter

London - Chatto and Windus, 1921. London - Chatto and Windus, 1921 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce early edition of this lecture on the Architectural Heresies of a Painter by the artist Roger Fry, in original paper wraps. The lecture was delivered by Fry at the Royal Institute of British Architects on May 20th 1921. First edition. Roger Eliot Fry (1866 - 1934) was an English artist and art critic, and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Establishing his reputation as a scholar of the Old Masters, he became an advocate of more recent developments in French painting, to which he gave the name Post-Impressionism. He was the first figure to raise public awareness of modern art in Britain, and emphasised the formal properties of paintings over the associated ideas conjured in the viewer by their depicted content. He was described by the art historian Kenneth Clark as incomparably the greatest influence on taste since Ruskin. . . In so far as taste can be changed by one man, it was changed by Roger Fry. Condition: In original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart but with slight edgewear, slight marginal age toning and the odd mark. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

London: The Egoist Press, 1921.. London: The Egoist Press, 1921.. Black cloth, stamped in blue. Usual faint foxing, minor rubbing at extremities, but a very good copy. First edition of the author's first book, one of ca. 500 copies printed. With McAlmon's early presentation inscription: "To Harrison from Bob." The recipient of the presentation has been suggested to be the American publisher, Harrison Smith, who issued an American edition of one of McAlmon's later publications, Lanham's SAILOR'S DON'T CARE, but no other internal evidence confirms that speculation. Nonetheless, this is not a book which, in our experience, turns up often with a presentation inscription.

Sechs Radierungen zu Hans Bethge's Satuila (original etchings by Georg Alexander Mathey)

Berlin: Morawe & Scheffelt, 1921 - NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!) Der Waldläufer. Übertragen von Julius Hoffmann. Mit 66 Orig.-Steinzeichnungen von Max Slevogt.

Berlin, Propyläen (1921).. Gr.-4°. 1 Bl., 359, (7) S., 1 Bl., OGanzlederbd. Antiquariats-Titelbeschreibung. Ansonsten innen absolut tadellos. Rümann 20.a. Rodenberg 282. Schauer II.84.. * Eins von 300 (ges. 1500) numer.

[Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50] .

A History of the Great War

London, Edinburgh and New York- Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1921. London, Edinburgh and New York- Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1921 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce edition of The History of the Great War by John Buchan with numerousmaps including some that fold-out. Originally appearing in twenty-four volumes between February 1916 and July 1919, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. First edition thus. In four volumes complete. John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir PC GCMG GCVO CH (1875 - 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. Buchan then enlisted in the British Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps, where he wrote speeches and communiqus for Sir Douglas Haig. Recognised for his abilities, Buchan was appointed as the Director of Information in 1917, under the Lord Beaverbrook- a job that Buchan said was the toughest job I ever took on. Buchan also assisted Charles Masterman in publishing a monthly magazine that detailed the history of the war, the first edition appearing in February 1915. It was difficult, given his close connections to many of Britain's military leaders, for Buchan to be critical of the British Army's conduct during the conflict. With the odd closed tear, in particular to fold-out maps. Overall: GOOD.
