The Experiences of an Asylum Doctor

London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., , 1921 & 1922. With Suggestions for Asylum and Lunacy Law Reform. [Together with;] GRANT-SMITH, Rachel. The Experiences of an Asylum Patient. With an Introduction and Notes by Montagu Lomax. 2 vols. Octavo. Original brown and black cloth respectively. Some browning to both, the second item from the Daily Express library with their inkstamps to the endpapers and edges, some slight damping to the inner lower corner of the endpapers of the first, in both cases the cloth a little worn, but nonetheless very good. First Editions. "Deficiencies in the day-to-day management of English asylums had long been exposed, ever since the damning indictment of neglect and casual cruelty contained in Montagu Lomax's The Experiences of an Asylum Doctor... a sobering work written not by a protesting patient, but by a disillusioned doctor. "Our asylums detain", he complained, "but they certainly do not cure." [Porter Madness pp.207-8] After two years working at the Prestwich Asylum, the largest in the country, Lomax felt sufficiently disturbed to publish a description of his experiences and conditions and a plea for asylum reform. Following the publication The Ministry of Health convened the Cobb Committee to enquire into the accuracy of his charges. Lomax was called to appear before the committee, but declined due to his feeling that "owing to its official constitution, it was not only likely to be biased, but from its limited "terms of reference" it was unable to go to the root of the evils exposed in the book." The conclusions were, as he had expected, foregone, his allegations were rejected, & the committee congratulated on its "masterly and logical" report. Much was done to disparage Lomax's motives and reputation, and to marginalise him within the profession, sniped at in the Journal of Mental Sciences, and on his death in 1934 neither the JMS or British Medical Journal obituarised him. Having encountered Grant-Smith's narrative of her experiences "in the five asylums in which she was immured" as a series of articles in Truth he arranged for their republication in support of his own examination of the problem. She was "one of the witnesses whom I was, and I am, prepared to call before a [suitably constituted] Royal Commission, and let her tell her story in her own words." Lomax's exposés resulted directly in just such a commission, the Macmillan Commission of 1924, his evidence constituting 26pp in the Minutes of Evidence thereof, the recommendations of which led to the Mental Health Act of 1930, "opening the way to many developments in mental health services over the following 30 years." A recent study of the case from primary sources, where available, concluded, "Lomax did more than contribute to a process of mental health reform. His willingness to write frankly and to criticise provide an example to all mental health professionals who find themselves in settings where abuses occur... His vivid descriptions of patients' behaviour and mental state in asylums and of the institutional process produced insights which were to be rediscovered 30 years later by Barton and Goffman..." [Harding "Not Worth Powder and Shot" British Journal of Psychiatry, (1990) 156, p.187] This pair of titles are not uncommon institutionally, but really quite elusive on the market.

        Twelve Original Woodcuts

Richmond: Printed and Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1921. Small quarto. Original hand-printed marbled blue, black and green "wallpaper" wrappers, white paper title label to upper wrapper printed in black. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. 12 cuts printed directly from the blocks. Some typical rubbing and wear to the wrappers, especially at the spine but a very decent copy and uncommon thus. First edition, first impression. One of just 150 copies hand-printed by the Woolfs.         China Sea. North Coast of Formosa (Taiwan) Kiirun Ko (Keelung Harbour) From the Japanese Government Plans of 1919.

Published at the Admiralty, New Edition 11th April, 1921. Small corrections to 1923., London, - Admiralty chart of northern Taiwan 710 by 1040mm. (28 by 41 inches). Engraved chart, including tidal information, compass roses, soundings, seabed notations, currents, sandbanks, shoals, lighthouses and beacons picked out in yellow and red, inland elevations, detailing, and buildings. Detailed chart of the Keelung Port on the north coast of Taiwan.Taiwan at the time of the chart's publication was under the control of the Japanese, who in 1895 had gained control of the island from the Chinese after the First Sino-Japanses War. Under the adminstration of the Japanese Keelung became one of the major trading ports in Taiwan. Although heavily bombed during the Second World War, the port today is one of the busiest container ports in the world. The British Hydrographic Office was founded in 1795 by George III, who appointed Alexander Dalrymple as the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. The first charts were produced in 1800. Unlike the U. S. Coast Survey the Hydrographic Office was given permission to sell charts to the public and they produced a great number of sea charts covering every corner of the globe. Most of the Admiralty charts produced by the Hydrographic Office delineated coastline as well as high and low water marks and record depth of water as established by soundings. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners across the world. Thanks to the innovations of Sir Francis Beaufort, who developed the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, the British Hydrographic Office became one of the leading producers of sea charts. In fact, such was their accuracy that the phrase 'Safe as an Admiralty Chart' was coined.

Sporting Recollections. The corrected typescript of this unpublished book, consisting of chapters on Pheasant, Duck and Quail shooting, and one, "Hits and Misses" concerning the mechanics of successful shooting; with a rejection letter from Henry Holt and Co. All contained in the original mailing envelope

n.p., n.d.. The typescript consists of 42 pages with numerous pencil corrections, including, on two pages, the printed article on Quail as it originally appeared in the August 1921 issue of Field and Stream. On 11 x 8 1/2 inch pages, some fraying to a few margins, else fine. From the Estate of Eugene V. Connett, III, proprietor of The Derrydale Press . As with most of Connett's books, this is a collection of articles written for magazines, in this instance some highly personalized accounts of the author's shooting experiences--the exception being "Hits and Misses", a more objective account of the mechanics of shooting: developing a smooth swing, knowing when a bird is in range, etc. (The typescript of this bears Connett's pencilled notation, "Sold 1947 to F & S [Field and Stream] but not published"). Connett, then at the publishing firm of Van Nostrand, submitted "Sporting Recollections" to Henry Holt and Company, and on February 4, 1960 it was returned: "We do not feel that we would have sufficient sales success with the work to warrant our taking it on". It is not improbable that the rather short length of the book, together with Connett's strong personalized style, was a factor in this decision; at any rate, the book did not appear in print--which, as the owner of this typescript will quickly discover, was a considerable loss to the literature of sport. In a letter to Jepson of 8 November 1921 Ford wrote that he was awarded the Poetry of Chicago prize for best poem of the year which pleased him "as the first public recognition [he] ever received - except from the Inst. de France, & that hadn’t any [dollars] attached".         Two Typed Letters, signed, to Edward A. Filene, of the American Chamber of Commerce, regarding the work of the Commission in Germany

Coblenz, Germany, 14 october, 1921. 4to. 10 pp., and a 3 pp. cover letter, on "Interallied Rhineland High Commission" stationery; the first with numerous corrections in ink; both marked "Personal" in pencil. Some wear at edges, slight soiling, old pinholes; overall, quite good. In green and grey morocco-backed clam shell box . The Interallied Rhineland High Commission was a civil body formed after World War I to govern occupied Germany on the Rhineland. During the summer of 1921, representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce had visited the Commission in Coblenz to voice their concerns about the lack of a European market for American exports - both agricultural and industrial. Following that visit, Stone writes this lengthy, and confidential analysis to Boston merchant Filene, outlining America's goals, the goals of the various members of the Commission, and the divergence of national interests amongst the allies. In particular, the policy of the French being to ensure its security against any future German aggression; the policy of the US, Stone reassures the Chamber of Commerce, being one of opening markets. Stone writes, prophetically: "The relations between France and Germany are the key to the situation in Europe at the present time."

        Nascaupee Indian

1921 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 11 1/2 x 9 inches
