LA VITA NUOVA (THE NEW LIFE) Fine Facsimile Edition

      Vallecchi. New;. Hardcover.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICFacsimile reproduction of the 1921 illustrated edition Format: 30x40 centimetres Pages: 136 Hand-bound in silk with silver impressions, cased edition. Printed on special writing paper produced by Cartiere Miliani di Fabriano, Italy. Limited edition of 2999 copies

CONTENTS If The Comedy represents the most complicated, voluminous and famous of Dante’s works, La Vita Nuova is his more sublime poetic composition. The story of his love for Beatrice, starting from their first encounter when she is only nine years old, is described by Dante according to pure “Stilnovo” advices and offers a poetical autobiography, which documents young Dante’s adhesion to “Stilnovo” ideals and spiritual evolution. In the past La Vita Nuova has inspired many writers and artists even if, in six centuries since its creation, an edition entirely decorated with full colour illustrations has been printed only once. In 1921, year of the sixth centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death, three artists worked together to create what we can consider today a real and perhaps unique miniated codex of the XXth century: La Vita Nuova illustrated with forty original watercolours by Vittorio Grassi, entirely hand written by the calligrapher Enrico Brignoli and decorated in every page by Nestore Leoni’s decorations. This precius limited edition, consisting of the facsimile reproduction of the 1921 edition, is presented by an important introduction by Domenico De Robertis, among the most world experts on Dante’s work.
.

1921 - 1962 Collection of Correspondence of El Paso Texas Educator & Author Dr. Lucinda De Leftwich Templin, Including Material Concerning Her War Museum and the Establishment of Radford School for Girls

Not Published, El Paso Texas 1921 - The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to (and a few items from) Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin (1888-1969) author, historian & collector, ".one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO., did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 (at the time, called El Paso School for Girls); Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove, Mo., in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage, provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration, Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967, the 22-acre campus had more than $1,000,000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400,000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies, named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications, most of which were concerned with the field of education. (The above material from her obituary); This wide-ranging, diverse collection has three intertwining themes - letters concerning Dr. Templin's ongoing interest in education and educational materials for her school, letters which relate to the business and academic part of Radford and letters of reference for applicants and correspondence which relates to the creation of her War Museum, where she collected military autographs, uniforms, photographs, paraphernalia, weapons from around the world. A sampling of what is found here, chronological order: 1921 Dr. James G. Kiernan, writing about some autographs he was sending to Templin - he was famous for the earliest-known use of the word heterosexual in the United States; 1921 Ellen Shaw Barlow writing in relation to the national Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor, requesting Templin's presence for a meeting of the Committee on the Care and Training of Delinquent Women and Girls; 1926 Roy Franklin Nichols (1896-1973) American historian and a Pulitzer Prize winner, writing regarding one of Templins' publications; 1928 Breckinridge Long (1881 - 1958) diplomat and politician served in the administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, on Democratic National Committee letterhead - regarding a portrait of Rev. John Breckinridge (his great-grandfather) Templin was sending in appreciation of his " defense of Religious Freedom "; Federico de Onis Sánchez (1885 - 1966 ) Spanish writer and literary critic, taught Spanish literature at Columbia University in New York concerning a recommendation of one of his students for a position at Radford ; educator John L. Bergstresser; Jessie H. Humphries Associate Dean Texas Womens University; Butler Ames (1871-1954) American politician, engineer, soldier and businessman; Richard Fenner Burges (1873-1945) Texas legislator and conservationist; Alice Mildred Burgess; William Blair Roberts (1881-1964) Episcopal Suffragan Bishop South Dakota; Katharine Denworth, president of Bradford Academy, regarding an article on sororities in colleges; N. Floyd Templin of the Ohio House of Representatives writing on Templin family genealogical matters; John G. Barry, consulting mining geologist and engineer of El Paso, regarding an educational alliance between the Radford School and the Texas College of Mines; Arthur L Burroughs, publisher, writing about the subject of grammar in education; Harriet M. The Emperor Jones; Diff'rent; The Straw. [With:] Typed Letter, signed ("Gene") to his father-in-law

New York: Boni and Liveright, [1921] - A presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper: "To the father-in- law that fate lets me see so little of that one would think we regarded each other as the bad 'in-laws' of the story books - which I'm sure we don't. In all affectionate remembrance, Son-in-law Eugene." The recipient is Edward Boulton, the father of O'Neill's second wife, Agnes Boulton. Together with a letter, dated November 1, 1925, in which O'Neill thanks his father-in-law for the gift of a crucifix, mentioning he is finishing a play, and suggesting a visit. It merits quoting in full: "Dear Eddie: I have been meaning to write you every evening to thank you for the crucifix, but something has always turned up to prevent me. It certainly is a beauty, the finest I have ever seen - and most tortured! Your sending me this makes me think I'll start collecting crucifixes as a hobby. I have four now arranged around the study. When am I going to see you? Aggie has to go to New York soon to have Shane's tonsils out, and will be gone for about a week, during which time I shall be by my lonesome out here - finishing up a new play. Perhaps you can come down and keep me company and Agnes says Cecil might be with her in New York, attending to her business about her novel and stories. Tell her, by the way, that she has certainly done some fine work. All best, and thanks again for the crucifix. It sure is a beautiful thing. Always, Gene." O'Neill was, of course, a lapsed Catholic who suffered greatly because of his inability to find salvation in religion. Religion featured prominently in some of his plays, including Lazarus Laughed, which he was working on at the time. This was also the time that O'Neill finally quit drinking - it is tempting to see a connection with his sobriety, the subject matter of his current work, the birth of his daughter Oona in May of 1925, and his interest in collecting crucifixes. An incredible letter, touching on O'Neill's writing, family, and religious concerns First edition. 8vo. x, [ii], 285, [1] pp. Publisher's tan paper-covered boards, stamped in black, orange cloth spine, stamped in black, front board tender, else near fine. Little Obelia and further adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, no date, but, 1921. Quarto, two colour plates including frontispiece, sepia plates; some slight foxing and edgewear but a good copy in the original pictorial boards with colour onlay. First edition of one of Australia's classic children's tales. In 1918 May Gibbs had published the first of her famous Gumnut classics, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and the response to her characters was so overwhelming that she continued the Gumnut adventures in further books. Little Obelia is the third in the series: Cuddlepie makes the journey under the sea to find and rescue Ragged Blossom, whilst Snugglepot lives out his particular adventure with Mr. Lizard. "The illustrations show remarkable ingenuity on the part of the artist, who has given a personality to a number of familiar Australian plants and animals…and all the grumpy grown-ups will enjoy them too" (Sydney Mail, quoted by Walsh, 'May Gibbs', p. 128.).

Eigenh. Anmerkungen mit eh. Besitzvermerk in: Ferdinand Ebner. Das Wort und die geistigen Realitäten. Pneumatologische Fragmente.

Innsbruck, Brenner-Verlag, 1921. - 244, (4) SS. Grüner Leinenband der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückentitel. Gr.-8vo. The Mystery Mind

Grosset and Dunlap New York [1921] - First Edition and First Photoplay Edition, illustrated with four stills from the Supreme Pictures serial starring J. Robert Pauline, "The Famous Hypnotist", Violet MacMillan, Paul Panzer and Ed Rogers. Pauline was a well-known hypnotist whose career spanned thirty years, this was his only film role. A very uncommon mystery and horror photoplay with some confusing bibliography. Hubin lists this Grosset edition as the true first printing, published in 1921. This is despite a copyright page claiming a 1920 copyright by Harper and Brothers and a film production date of November 1920. Reeve and Grey are given credit as the screenwriters of the film and it seems likely that the 'story' started off as a silent black and white serial written by Reeve and Grey, novelized and published by Grosset who used the copyright plate from Harpers which perhaps had intentions to publish this book but forfeit the production to Grosset perhaps because of the popularity of their photoplay editions. There is a novelization credit on title page for Marc Edmund Jones which adds credence to this argument. "Violet Bronson's life is threatened by a mysterious and tricky gang, lead by Evil Eye, if she marries Robert Dupont before her eighteenth birthday. This band is determined to get the hidden treasure to which Violet's guardian, Dr. Sutton, has the plan of its location. In spite of the fact that every precaution is taken, Violet is suddenly kidnapped, but her lover, Robert Dupont, has no fear for this terrible gang and is untiring in his efforts to rescue her." Near Fine but for top edges of covers mildly bumped, in Very Good modestly darkened dustjacket, some shallow chips and wear. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Reading" with vignette on title in orange and green, two plates in the same colors, one facsimile of writing in text, device on final page, stylized illustration of a tree on front and rear endpapers; "Berneval" with woodcuts of Naples and Paris printed in blue on the front and rear endpapers, two-color title page woodcut, one plate and a facsimile of a Wilde letter, and printer's woodcut device; our special deluxe version WITH THREE ADDITIONAL WOODCUTS at the back of each volume, all the woodcuts as well as the cover design by Randolph Schwabe. Ransom, p. 211; Tomkinson, p. 17. "Berneval" spine just a bit darkened, otherwise FINE, UNWORN COPIES that have obviously been little used, as they open stiffly and are immaculate inside and out. Here, "After Berneval" is offered with "After Reading," its (earlier) companion volume, both of them in their deluxe form on Japanese vellum and including an extra suite of the illustrations. "Reading" comprises a set of letters, also written to Ross, by Wilde during the summer of 1897, after having just been released from two years' imprisonment in Reading Gaol. The preface to its sequel, "After Berneval," says that the earlier collection "was unprocurable almost as soon as it was published." The letters in these volumes tell the story of a tragic literary figure who fell from a precipitous height. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was born and raised in Ireland, studied classics at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Magdalen College, Oxford, and then settled in London. There he became famous for his unmatched wit and infamous for his personal eccentricities--long hair, décor at his lodgings that included peacock feathers and blue china, and, ultimately, sexual behavior that was deemed both intolerable and criminal. During the first half of the 1890s, he was enjoying remarkable social prominence and literary success with the staging of "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1892), "A Woman of No Importance" (1893), "An Ideal Husband" (1894), and the incomparable "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1895). But two months after the staging of this last play, he brought a defamation suit against the Marquess of Queensbury, the father of his intimate friend, Lord Alfred Douglas. The suit backfired: in the course of the litigation, Wilde was investigated by police, and his homosexuality was exposed, leaving his reputation destroyed. He was sentenced in May of 1895 to two years of hard labor, spending part of his time behind bars at Reading Prison, where he produced his powerful poem, "De Profundis." After release, he moved to the Continent and died three years later in Paris of meningitis. As Day says, "Among English men of letters only Byron and Shaw have surpassed Wilde in the craft of conscious posing and self-publicizing," a fact that has made succeeding generations suspicious of the reality behind the legend that the author helped to establish. But after a period when he was treated as a kind of martyr because of his suffering at the hands of squeamish Victorianism, "it is at last possible to evaluate Wilde as the capable literary artist he acutally was." Travels in Arabia Deserta. With a new Preface by the Author, Introduction by T.E. Lawrence, and all the Original Maps, Plans and Cuts

London: Jonathan Cape and the Medici Society (Philip Warner), 1921., 1921. FIRST EDITION THUS. 2 volumes, large octavo. With folding colour map in pocket at end of volume I, frontispieces, and numerous maps, plans and illustrations (some folding), pp.(xxvi), 623; (xiv), 690. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, with coated black endpapers, top edge gilt. Some minor wear, extremities sunned, cloth a little rubbed, spine tips frayed. Very good indeed. Originally published in 1888 at the Cambridge University Press, this important Cape edition is entirely reset, with a new preface by Doughty and an essay by T.E. Lawrence. During the Great War Lawrence urged the British Government to issue serial parts of this work as a handbook for officers serving in Arabia. Following hostilities he lobbied to republish the whole book. Duckworth and Doubleday declined and eventually Medici employee Herbert J. Cape, who appreciated Doughty's work, took up the challenge and produced this brand new edition of 500 copies, being the first ever book from Jonathan Cape, Publisher, on 15th January 1921, sold at a nosebleed inducing price of nine guineas (about £1000 today). Six large paper copies signed by Doughty and Lawrence were produced, and a quick reprint followed without the Lawrence note, withdrawn by him "because it's in bad taste".
