        Nascaupee Indian

1921 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 11 1/2 x 9 inches

ORIGINAL SELF PORTRAIT INK DRAWING,in. AN ONLOOKER IN FRANCE.1917 - 1919.

Williams and Norgate.London.,1921 - FIRST EDITION.Large 8vo.(10.2 x 7.8 inches).Illustrated with 96 plates.Publishers original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling to spine.Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector,Paul Cravath.----The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen".The drawing shows Cravath,a large man who stood 6ft 4inches,sat posing while a much smaller Orpen, the heat rising from his head and his sleeves rolled up,paints the portrait.------The book has the bookplate of the prolific author and traveller Cecil Roberts who has written a note on the blank verso of the frontis piece about Cravath and how he commissioned Orpen to paint his portrait, for a sum of £5000 plus expenses. While staying with Cravath at his Regency Long Island home, where the portrait was painted,Orpen gave Cravath this book as a memento. After Cravath died (in 1940) the house, and presumably some of the contents, was bought by Baron Eugene de Rothschild (in 1942) and Roberts notes that he was often his guest there. He doesn't explain how the book came to be his. There is one more note from Roberts, under the portrait of Lord Riddell (plate XLIX) mentioning his being at a press dinner given for him in 1919.---------Aside from being third in charge, and legal advisor,of the American War Mission during the Interallied War Conference of 1917,the first American mission to a European council in history,Paul Cravath is mainly known for his "Cravath System" which transformed the way law firms work and is still in use today. The "Cravath system" included hiring new law school graduates, then training them within the firm as associates, and eventually inviting the best to become partners.Throughout the twentieth century most of the growth of the big law firms relied on this system of recruiting, internal training, and loyalty to the firm.-----A nice self portrait of the Artist at work, all the better for being within a copy of Orpen's fascinating war memoir.:

OBrosch. 24x16 cm.. - KEIN REPRINT! WOOD IS A PLEASANT THING TO THINK ABOUT. [From The Mark On The Wall] THE CHELSEA BROADSIDE.

The Chelsea Book Club Broadside No. 1, [1921], London - Woolf, Virginia. WOOD IS A PLEASANT THING TO THINK ABOUT. [From The Mark On The Wall] THE CHELSEA BROADSIDE. London: The Chelsea Book Club Broadside No. 1, [1921]. A single leaf printed recto only, 13" x 7" 1/4 containing two woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. A fine example. The second [partial separate edition & one of Woolf's scarcest A items. [Kirkpatrick A2c] being an extract from the last paragraph of the revised version of The Mark on the Wall as published in Monday or Tuesday. The illustrations for this broadside were not published elsewhere. The broadside is rare & not much is known about the actual printing history. Kirkpatrick notes that John Rodker was living in Belsize Park Gardens at the time but there is no further clue pointing to him bringing out the edition. Certainly very few were printed & only a handful survive. Excellent example. Some pencil notes on the verso at the top. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Hogarth Press, London 1921 - First Edition, one of 1,000 copies. 8vo; 91pp; + one page of ads for other books by The Hogarth Press. Black and white illustration on front panel, white panel on back, brick-colored cloth spine. Illustrated with four original woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Hand set and letterpress printed by McDermott at The Prompt Press, Richmond. A lovely fresh copy.Virginia Woolf (1882- 1941), English novelist, essayist and critic, married the political theorist Leonard Woolf in 1912, with whom she established the Hogarth Press. MONDAY OR TUESDAY was the first Hogarth Press title to be included in the Annals of English Literature, 1475-1950. It was Woolf's "break out" book and it was noted that with this collection of short stories, Mrs. Woolf "emerged definitely with the liveliest imagination and most delicate style of her time." Vanessa Bell (1879-1961), elder sister of Virginia Woolf, was herself a talented artist. She designed a number of dust jackets for books published by her sister's press, as well as illustrating the books. In her art, she attempted to break the bonds of restrictive Victorian norms. She, and the other members of the Bloomsbury group, made significant efforts to introduce the French avant-garde to an English audience. Bell's art, often decorative, and especially in the period represented in this book owes much to Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. See an Image. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
