The Chelsea Book Club Broadside No. 1, [1921], London - Woolf, Virginia. WOOD IS A PLEASANT THING TO THINK ABOUT. [From The Mark On The Wall] THE CHELSEA BROADSIDE. London: The Chelsea Book Club Broadside No. 1, [1921]. A single leaf printed recto only, 13" x 7" 1/4 containing two woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. A fine example. The second [partial separate edition & one of Woolf's scarcest A items. [Kirkpatrick A2c] being an extract from the last paragraph of the revised version of The Mark on the Wall as published in Monday or Tuesday. The illustrations for this broadside were not published elsewhere. The broadside is rare & not much is known about the actual printing history. Kirkpatrick notes that John Rodker was living in Belsize Park Gardens at the time but there is no further clue pointing to him bringing out the edition. Certainly very few were printed & only a handful survive. Excellent example. Some pencil notes on the verso at the top. [Attributes: First Edition]

Black and white illustration on front panel, white panel on back, brick-colored cloth spine. Some minor rubbing to black and white illustration on front panel, endpapers browned, some offsetting from woodcuts to text page opposite as usual (and even so noted in Kunitz & Haycraft, p. 1549), else fine, housed in brick-colored cloth with brown morocco spine clamshell box. Illustrated with four original woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Hand set and letterpress printed by McDermott at The Prompt Press, Richmond. A lovely fresh copy.Virginia Woolf (1882- 1941), English novelist, essayist and critic, married the political theorist Leonard Woolf in 1912, with whom she established the Hogarth Press. MONDAY OR TUESDAY was the first Hogarth Press title to be included in the Annals of English Literature, 1475-1950. It was Woolf's "break out" book and it was noted that with this collection of short stories, Mrs. Woolf "emerged definitely with the liveliest imagination and most delicate style of her time." Vanessa Bell (1879-1961), elder sister of Virginia Woolf, was herself a talented artist. She designed a number of dust jackets for books published by her sister's press, as well as illustrating the books. In her art, she attempted to break the bonds of restrictive Victorian norms. She, and the other members of the Bloomsbury group, made significant efforts to introduce the French avant-garde to an English audience. Bell's art, often decorative, and especially in the period represented in this book owes much to Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. See an Image. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BACK TO METHUSELAH A Metabiological Pentateuch

Constable 1921 - First edition. Original sage green cloth titled in gilt on the spine. Author's contemporary presentation copy, inscribed on the half title (a week before publication), "To Sydney & Beatrice Webb from G. B.S. 16 June 1921." A very good copy, with a little light soiling. An exceptional association copy. Shaw first met Sidney Webb at a meeting of the Zetetical Society in 1879, and it was with the Webbs that Shaw essentially founded the Fabian society, the socialist political organisation dedicated to transforming Britain into a socialist state, not by revolution but by systematic progressive legislation, bolstered by persuasion and mass education. The Fabian society would later be instrumental in founding the London School of Economics and the Labour Party. It remains Shaw's lasting political legacy. On attending an exploratory meeting of potential 'Fabians', "Shaw had found his official milieu. He went away and returned with a Zetetical discovery of his: one Sidney Webb (later Lord Passfield), then resident clerk at the Colonial office . Wherever Shaw has succeeded you will find that he has attached himself to some more enterprising spirit who has taken all the money risks . In his Fabian phase he picked Sidney Webb; and the firm of Sidney and Beatrice Webb proved a very sound political investment." (Frank Harris - Bernard Shaw). Written as an attempt to find his way out of post-war pessimism, Back to Methuselah is a linking of five plays exploring the same ideologies as the much earlier 'Man and Superman', as it dramatises Shaw's evolutionary theories and explores the history of human progress from the Garden of Eden to a science-fiction future.         Sabatini, Rafael: Three ALS (Autograph Letters Signed)

Battersea and Cardiganshire 1921 - Battersea and Cardiganshire, Great Britain, 1921 and 1922. Standard letter folds, minor age discoloration and peripheral wear, else Very Good Plus. Three original ALS by Sabatini - author of such landmark masterpieces as Scaramouche, Captain Blood, The Sea-Hawk, Fortune Fool, Saint Martin's Summer and a lengthy list of other titles. Sabatini was just beginning earning to earn international renown for his lush, textured prose and swashbuckling, romantic plots when he wrote these letters. Two were written in 1921 - the year of publication of Scaramouche, considered by many to be his most brilliant work. The other was written in 1922, the year of publication of Captain Blood. Those two titles remain today the most valuable Sabatini first editions. That his life was becoming hectic in those years at the height of his genius is evidenced by these letters: hard to read, they nonetheless all express regrets for his being unable to attend one function or another.       Doubleday Page and Company 1921 - First Edition, First Printing. A stunning copy of this true first edition with the first issue point on P. 419. This early dustjacket has chipping to the edges and a piece missing on the bottom spine. This later state dustjacket resembles the first issue dustjacket with the same Doubleday picture on the front, but different back panel. The book is in excellent condition with slight wear to the edges. This is one of the nicest copies that we have seen of this true first edition. The binding is tight, and the pages are clean. There is no writing, marks or bookplates in the book. Overall, a collectable copy with an original early dustjacket. We buy Tarkington First Editions. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Doubleday 1921 - First Edition, First Printing. This scarce dustjacket is seldom offered on the market and is quite rare in any condition. The bad news is that this copy has been poorly restored by an unprofessional who didn't know what they were doing. Not only are pieces missing from the majority of the dustjacket, but the remaining original parts of the dustjacket have been glued together on a photo copy of the original dustjacket. The good news is the book is a true first edition. The binding is tight, with light wear to the edges. Most pulitzer collections lack this title so this is a filler copy. Trades and offers welcomed.         A Gentleman of Leisure

Herbert Jenkins 1921 - London 1921 blue cloth 6 titles at front F/NF. The book is square ,no inscriptions, rubbing ,stains or foxing. The paper is cheap post war which is toasted to a light brown ,two pages have small area of brown discolouration, approx 2mm .The paper was so cheap that it discoloured very easily .A lot of these early titles were read when people smoked or ate biscuits so its rare to find a copy in this condition . The wrapper is the second issue ,identical to the first except rear panel has green border not red ,Malcolm Sage has no price as against the first which states 7/6 and the Rain Girl is 2/6 instead of 6/- .The wrapper has two small chips on front panel and short closed tears ,no soiling, the apparent soiling on the front panel is caused by slight ripple shadow .An interesting item,as have only recently become aware there was a second issue. I believe that this title is far rarer than Love among the Chickens which turns up fairly regularly. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
