Uraniborg og Stjærneborg.

Aage Marcus, København/Oxford University Press, 1921. 43+9 tavler sider. Orig. kartonbind Velholdt eksmplar. Lette spor ved ryg. Illustreret med tegninger af Charles Christensen. With an English summary. Dansk

Series of 4 letters: 3 ALS and 1 LS + autograph additions, Cleveland OH, 1947-1951, 13 pages large 4to. With 1 envelope. Good condition. With interesting addenda (below).

. . Wood, Jasper (1921-2002), American civil rights activist, photographer and writer. - The letters are addressed to the American writer and editor (Carrefour Press) Michael Fraenkel (1896-1957), in the 1930s in Paris a close friend and furtherer of Henry Miller ("Boris" in Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" is modeled after him). - At the time when these letters were written young Jasper Wood made his first literary steps and was about to make a name of himself as a photographer. He was highly attracted by Fraenkel's concept of the spiritual death suffered by materialist Western man, as laid down in Fraenkel's books "Werther's Younger Brother" (1930), "Bastard Death (1936)" and "Death Is Not Enough"(1939) - a spiritual death to be overcome by the return to human love, which Wood refers to as "religiousness". - - 1) July 19, (1947). After their first meeting (in Fraenkel's home in New York) Wood writes he had been going "through a horrible Werther period" due to his "working in the commercial world" - "My photography has become my only creative outfit for the time being - and I have even sold some of it ... - - Our talk and the presence reveales how deeply you are motivated by this religiousness within your mind!!! With Miller its in his guts!!! And with Patchen its deep in his soul ..." Joyce, Picasso, and Freud were realizing this need for religiousness to a degree, yet "they were men of action - not men of love - and they went deep into the Bastard Death, which is the same as Lawrences Masturbative Man ..." - - 2) No date (1947). Lengthily discussing his book project "The Voice of the Apocalypse" in which he wishes to present (together with prospective co-authors like Fraenkel) "the general history of Apocalyptic writing", naming Celine, Henry Miller, Kenneth Patchen, Dylan Thomas and others. - "Is Giono an apocalyptic voice, or is he a pastoralist ... - - Did I tell you Bastard Death was the only book in English in Otto Rank's library when he died? Well it was, a signed copy ..." - - 3) (September 26, 1947). Again on the book project, and on Miller. "... Am enclosing a letter from Miller's wife that speaks for itself. As a man he seems about through - and as a writer just beginning. But for a man like Miller to have a wife say no - that's too much. He likes Lawrence - but remember how Lawrence hated the possessiveness of the word 'wife'. And when she refers to him as 'Henry Miller' it's too much. It sounds too much like God. Patchen and Miller create the same response - you don't - and therein lies your inviolate fineness ... - - Don't ever let what has happened to Miller in America happen to you. If it starts - well, go away again ... And keep your manhood. I need Miller in the book though - can you get him to cooperate, do you think? ... - - Oh, that Miller, he knew the need of destroying the artist in the man in his heart and soul and guts and then becomes more and more artist and less and less man. It's horrible - and if he knows what is going on ... it must hurt like hell. He needs someone like you now more than ever before ..." - - 4) June 24 (1951). Typewritten letter on post-war Europe. "... I can well imagine that you found Europe today not for people like us ... The blood is stale, and I believe that Lawrence would at long last give up on his loved Italy. The final straw is to read that a bunch of homosexuals are living in Lawrence's old home there. They are seemingly supported by Caresse Crosby - said group includes Pearl Kazin, Truman Capote, etc. ... Tennessee Williams ... has also stayed with this group. Death-stayed dead, that's the only word for it. Then ... those rather horrible long, exhausingly drawnout notebooks of Andre Gide. This to me seems to paint the inner exhaustion of that part of the world today ..." Subsequently discussing Pound and Celine - the latter "may become a saint ... Because through what appeared to be attacks upon the Jews he became the Jew through the world's attacks upon him. He bore the brunt - and he lives ... Most of the others may have experienced horror, but they did not come through. And today they live as parasites on the side of the ugly hulk that is left. - - I have been doing a great deal of photography. Enclosed is the announcement for a show I had in the winter ... Won first award at Cleveland Museum of Art for group of three negro photographs. Have also been photographing an ana-baptist sect ... the amish ... They are shrewd, hard, tight, hypocritical as any people ever were ... yet with a strange beauty in their children, and a clean hardness about their lives which is most attractive ... But when a people use their religious people use their orthodox beliefs as a shield against the encroachment of the material world, they are already in defeat ... The new quality is born of out Life through Death, and an Acceptance of the disease and all it was and ever can be. Accept, but no longer be prodded by - that is the greatness of living after coming from out of the valley of Death ..." (The announcement mentioned is still with the letter). - - Enclosed are a typewritten copy of another letter from JW to MF; another printed announcement of an exhibition; a letter by his wife Nancy to MF's wife Daphne (1947); a typewritten essay by Fraenkel on JP (4 pages); and photocopies of several letters from MF to JP, 1945-1951 (50 pages).

        ASHURA CHO^

1921 - [EHON] Ito Chuta. ASHURA CHO Dai Go-kan. Tokyo: Kokusui Shuppansha, (Arata Eisuke), Taisho 10 [1921]. 5 volumes complete. Bound in printed cloth over [25.6 x 21.4 cm] boards with thongs. Entitled (roughly) "Demon Sketchbook". The Asuras of the title are the warrior gods of Indian religion, condemned to constant strife. The book is a deeply bitter and ironic look at the politics and social scene of the World War I era, not only in Japan itself, but around the world. As such it is an amazing slice of life during and after the world war from the unique perspective of a Japanese humanist given to Swiftian excess. The author (and illustrator), Ito Chuta, was an architect and gifted caricaturist. The printer/publisher was a bit of an ironist himself, as the closing note mentions that his "National Purity Publications" ["Kokusui Shuppansha"] did not quite embody the usual "National Purity" which was being bruited about. Obviously this work is a product of Taisho liberalism. Ten or so years earlier or later, it would have never reached the light of day in a less tolerant political atmosphere. There are 500 pages of plates, each is one-half color woodcut caricature and one-half wry commentary in a combination of letterpress and woodcut calligraphy. Well-printed and interesting, the full set of 500 plates in five volumes - with the original clasped cases - is quite a find, as one only occasionally finds even odd volumes. The cases are a bit chipped, the outer boxes very unusual, the contents are quite clean, in very good overall condition.

Harding's Return to Normalcy - and Isolationism - after World War I

Washington, D. C. 1921 - Typed Letter Signed as President, to Senator Joseph Medill McCormick, Washington, D. C., August 29, 1921. With autograph emendations in two different secretarial hands. 8 pp. Key political circular from the first-year Republican President written to influence off-year elections in New Mexico and other places. Harding justifies, and praises, the rapid postwar dismantling of America's military by Congress, while backhandedly criticizing the inattention of his predecessor - Woodrow Wilson - to the peacetime transition. "Vast expenditure without proper consideration for results, is the inevitable fruit of war." Partial Transcript "Thank you for your letter of congratulation on the accomplishment of the administration down to date. You have been good enough to speak kindly of the work which the Executive Departments have accomplished, as well as of that which has been done by the Congress. For myself, I feel disposed to emphasize what seem to me the remarkable achievements of the extraordinary session of the Congress. In view of the fact that during the war practically no consideration was given to preparation for the new conditions which would come with the return of peace, and that in the two years after the Armistice there was hardly any more administrative attention to these problems, I cannot but account it a monumental accomplishment which has marked the work of the extraordinary session down to the time of its recess . I am happy to assure you that the administrative departments are now in full sympathy with the program of rigorous and unremitting economy through which, I believe, we will be able during the next year to cover back into the Treasury so large a sum that the aggregate of taxation may be reduced to $3,500,000,000 a year . a well-nigh universal protest against a possible repetition of gigantic conflict gives rise to the common hope that the conference in November may lighten the burdens of both armament and taxation, not only for this but for other lands . The habit of vast expenditure without proper consideration for results, is the inevitable fruit of war . Surveying the national situation as a whole, it is plain that we are working our way out of a welter of waste and prodigal spending at a most impressive rate. We have made much progress toward retrenchment and greatly increased efficiency ."Historical BackgroundHarding defeated Democrat Jacob Cox for the presidency in a surprising landslide in 1920. He promised a "return to normalcy" and argued against the U.S. joining the League of Nations (Democratic predecessor Woodrow Wilson's vision). Here, Harding criticizes the wasteful spending that occurred during the nation's massive military mobilization for World War I. Billions had been spent for planes, ships and shells that were never put into action, partly because of America's late entry into the conflict. Harding, committed to a renewed isolationism, and bolstered by the actions of a Republican Congress, proclaims this "extravagance" over.Harding also boasts that this "program of rigorous and unremitting economy" will allow taxes to be cut by $3.5 billion, and contrasts this healthy frugality with the disorder and economic chaos of postwar Europe. The President also mentions "the conference in November," a reference to the Washington Naval Conference. At this conference, U.S. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes, working with diplomats from Britain, France, Italy, and Japan, agreed to halt further naval development. Harding reiterates his hope that the proceedings "may lighten the burdens of both armament and taxation; not only for this but for other lands."On September 7, 1921, The New York Times published this letter, with an analysis of its role in several off-year election campaigns. "The President, as titular and actual leader of his party, sounds the keynote on which he hopes Republicans will go before their constituents in support of the record of the. Geometrie und Erfahrung (pp.121-131).

. S.ber. Akad. Wiss. Berl., 1921/ 5. - Berlin 1921, 8°, S.103-166, OBrosch; unaufgeschnittenes frisches Exemplar.. The quite rare first edition and first appearance in print, rarely found in this fine condition, unopened and in original wrappers! - During the early years of the second decade of this century Einstein was also concerned to clarify misconceptions about the theory of relativity and to present his views on natural sciences on a less abstract level. Among the efforts in this direction, his particular beautiful lecture on "Geometry and Experience" stands out. At the Prussian Academy's commemorative session honouring Frederick the Great, founder of the Academy, Einstein delivered this lecture in which he summed up his views on the geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world. Here he gave his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "Insofar as the Laws of Mathematics refer to the external world, they are not certain; and insofar as they are certain, they do not refer to reality. The lecture was extended to book form. cf. W.Alicke. - Weil No.114; Schlipp-Shields No.148

Ein Weg zur experimentellen Prufung der Richtungquantelung im Magnetfeld [and] Der experimentelle Nachweis

[iii]-vi, 414; iv, 419pp. Braunschweig: Fried. Vieweg & Sohn; Berlin: Julius Springer, 1921-22. 224 x 149 mm. Vol. 7 in half morocco, cloth boards, a little rubbed; Vol. 8 in half cloth, marbled boards. Library stamps on titles.

First Editions. Stern, whom Emilio Segrè considered "one of the major physicists of the century" (p. 138), developed Dunoyer's molecular beam method and used it to devise what is now known as the Stern-Gerlach experiment, which demonstrates the reality of space-quantization of atoms. This experiment had an enormous impact on modern physics, and has become a paradigm of quantum measurement.

Spatial quantization had been introduced as a theoretical concept by Sommerfeld in 1916, but no one before Stern had ever demonstrated its existence, and some quantum physicists even considered it to be nothing more than a mathematical tool. In his 1921 paper, Stern proposed an empirical test: "If an electron in an atom carried a magnetic moment of about 1 Bohr magneton (= eh/4 me), an atomic beam of silver atoms should split in passing through a magnetic field of strong inhomogeneity" (Twentieth Century Physics, p. 164). In the 1922 paper, written jointly with Walther Gerlach, Stern described the initial results of their experimental work. In three later papers (not included here) Stern and Gerlach continued their investigations, which provided direct experimental proof of directional [space-] quantization in a magnetic field.
