Sabatini, Rafael: Three ALS (Autograph Letters Signed)

Battersea and Cardiganshire 1921 - Battersea and Cardiganshire, Great Britain, 1921 and 1922. Standard letter folds, minor age discoloration and peripheral wear, else Very Good Plus. Three original ALS by Sabatini - author of such landmark masterpieces as Scaramouche, Captain Blood, The Sea-Hawk, Fortune Fool, Saint Martin's Summer and a lengthy list of other titles. Sabatini was just beginning earning to earn international renown for his lush, textured prose and swashbuckling, romantic plots when he wrote these letters. Two were written in 1921 - the year of publication of Scaramouche, considered by many to be his most brilliant work. The other was written in 1922, the year of publication of Captain Blood. Those two titles remain today the most valuable Sabatini first editions. That his life was becoming hectic in those years at the height of his genius is evidenced by these letters: hard to read, they nonetheless all express regrets for his being unable to attend one function or another. Alice Adams

Doubleday Page and Company 1921 - First Edition, First Printing. A stunning copy of this true first edition with the first issue point on P. 419. This early dustjacket has chipping to the edges and a piece missing on the bottom spine. This later state dustjacket resembles the first issue dustjacket with the same Doubleday picture on the front, but different back panel. The book is in excellent condition with slight wear to the edges. This is one of the nicest copies that we have seen of this true first edition. The binding is tight, and the pages are clean. There is no writing, marks or bookplates in the book. Overall, a collectable copy with an original early dustjacket. We buy Tarkington First Editions. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Doubleday 1921 - First Edition, First Printing. This scarce dustjacket is seldom offered on the market and is quite rare in any condition. The bad news is that this copy has been poorly restored by an unprofessional who didn't know what they were doing. Not only are pieces missing from the majority of the dustjacket, but the remaining original parts of the dustjacket have been glued together on a photo copy of the original dustjacket. The good news is the book is a true first edition. The binding is tight, with light wear to the edges. Most pulitzer collections lack this title so this is a filler copy. Trades and offers welcomed. A Gentleman of Leisure

Herbert Jenkins 1921 - London 1921 blue cloth 6 titles at front F/NF. The book is square ,no inscriptions, rubbing ,stains or foxing. The paper is cheap post war which is toasted to a light brown ,two pages have small area of brown discolouration, approx 2mm .The paper was so cheap that it discoloured very easily .A lot of these early titles were read when people smoked or ate biscuits so its rare to find a copy in this condition . The wrapper is the second issue ,identical to the first except rear panel has green border not red ,Malcolm Sage has no price as against the first which states 7/6 and the Rain Girl is 2/6 instead of 6/- .The wrapper has two small chips on front panel and short closed tears ,no soiling, the apparent soiling on the front panel is caused by slight ripple shadow .An interesting item,as have only recently become aware there was a second issue. I believe that this title is far rarer than Love among the Chickens which turns up fairly regularly. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Archways of Life

New York: Moffat, Yard and Company. 1921. First. First edition. Papercovered boards with printed label. Small label of the Churchill Book and Print Shop in Los Angeles, erosion on the spine, sunning and corners of the board rubbed, a good copy. Poetry by the remarkable Cuban-American lesbian poet, playwright, and socialite reputed to have conducted lesbian affairs with Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne, Isadora Duncan, Katharine Cornell, and Maude Adams, among others. A very amusing copy. Mabel Normand's copy with her bookplate, and Inscribed by her to herself: "For 'Mayme' with love from her friend with all the word friendship means. Mabel." Additionally Normand has Signed her name "Mabel" at 19 different poems that apparently appealed to her and at one other poem as "Mayme." Additionally she has made comments at a couple of poems (one reads "I love this"). There is also a later, apparently unrelated ownership signature. Normand was a fascinating character in her own right, a silent film star, comedienne, and apparent hedonist who lead a colorful life until her death at 37. She carried on a long affair with Mack Sennett, helped foster the career of Charlie Chaplin, wrote and directed many of her own films, was entangled in the murder of her friend and fellow bibliophile, the director William Desmond Taylor (she departed his house after borrowing some books from him, and was the last known person to see him alive), as well as in the shooting of oil broker and golfer Courtland S. Dines (shot by her chauffeur with her pistol). In 1920 she played a "split-personality" role as "Mayme" and "Rosa" in the film What Happened to Rosa? Hence our attribution of this book as being inscribed to herself. .

        Mountain Interval

New York: Henry Holt, 1921. Second edition. 8vo. Portrait frontispiece of plaster bust of Frost. Original gray green boards, dark green linen spine. Crane A4.1 . Frost's third published book, containing some of his most famous poems: "The Road Not Taken," "An Old Man's Winter Night," "Birches," etc. An interesting copy, inscribed by Frost on the flyleaf to an old Harvard classmate (class of 1901) "For John Hallowell". In addition, Frost has written out the closing 9 lines of verse of his long poem, "Wild Grapes", which appeared in his next collection, NEW HAMPSHIRE (1923): "From Wild Grapes" "I had not taken the first step in knowledge "I had not learned to let go with the hands, "As still I have not learned to with the heart, "And have no wish to with the heart - nor need "That I can see. The mind is not the heart. "I may yet live as I know others live "To wish in vain to let go with the mind - "Of cares, at night, to sleep. But nothing tells me "That I need learn to let go with the heart." "Robert Frost "For John Hallowell"

Bredt

Hugo Schmidt, München 1921 - 1/500. Quarto. XIII, [7], 170, [6], 148, [2]pp. Original 3/4 vellum over decorative cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Top edge gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Rembrandt protected with a tissue guard. Rembrandt's Bible is the complete King James Bible with 240 illustrations and 20 original etchings after Rembrandt all protected with tissue guards. It is remarkable that though many Christian painters throughout the ages had been inspired by the Bible with its wealth of subjects and scenes, comparatively few had given us a complete cycle of Bible pictures comprising both the Old and New Testaments. One of these few artists was Rembrandt who, to judge from the multiplicity and variety of his biblical pictures and designs, must have been a close student of the Bible and imbued with an intense religious feeling. Indeed, he may be counted among the most prolific and ingenious of Bible illustrators, for he is credited with more than 200 paintings and etchings and over 500 rough sketches dealing with biblical subjects. Slight soiling/age-toning on vellum. Text in German. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ein Weg zur experimentellen Prufung der Richtungquantelung im Magnetfeld [and] Der experimentelle Nachweis. . .

Vol. 7 in half morocco, cloth boards, a little rubbed; Vol. 8 in half cloth, marbled boards. Library stamps on titles.First Editions. Stern, whom Emilio Segrè considered "one of the major physicists of the century" (p. 138), developed Dunoyer's molecular beam method and used it to devise what is now known as the Stern-Gerlach experiment, which demonstrates the reality of space-quantization of atoms. This experiment had an enormous impact on modern physics, and has become a paradigm of quantum measurement.Spatial quantization had been introduced as a theoretical concept by Sommerfeld in 1916, but no one before Stern had ever demonstrated its existence, and some quantum physicists even considered it to be nothing more than a mathematical tool. In his 1921 paper, Stern proposed an empirical test: "If an electron in an atom carried a magnetic moment of about 1 Bohr magneton (= eh/4 me), an atomic beam of silver atoms should split in passing through a magnetic field of strong inhomogeneity" (Twentieth Century Physics, p. 164). In the 1922 paper, written jointly with Walther Gerlach, Stern described the initial results of their experimental work. In three later papers (not included here) Stern and Gerlach continued their investigations, which provided direct experimental proof of directional [space-] quantization in a magnetic field. (title-page).We have never seen this book before. The delightful front cover illustration is most likely the only one by Louis Wain. The rest of the pictures are by an unidentified artist. At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. “He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves” (H.G. Wells).“From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled…although he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!” (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914).Opie, Primers, etc. Post 1850, GC 138
