Mitsou. Quarante images par Baltusz. Préface de Rainer Maria Rilke. Erlenbach-Zurich & Leipzig, Rotapfel-Verlag 1921. 194x245 mm, 13 p., 40 h., 40 ilustraciones, rústica.

Williams and Norgate.London.,1921. FIRST EDITION.Large 8vo.(10.2 x 7.8 inches).Illustrated with 96 plates.Publishers original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling to spine.Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector,Paul Cravath.----The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen".The drawing shows Cravath,a large man who stood 6ft 4inches,sat posing while a much smaller Orpen, the heat rising from his head and his sleeves rolled up,paints the portrait.------The book has the bookplate of the prolific author and traveller Cecil Roberts who has written a note on the blank verso of the frontis piece about Cravath and how he commissioned Orpen to paint his portrait, for a sum of ?5000 plus expenses. While staying with Cravath at his Regency Long Island home, where the portrait was painted,Orpen gave Cravath this book as a memento. After Cravath died (in 1940) the house, and presumably some of the contents, was bought by Baron Eugene de Rothschild (in 1942) and Roberts notes that he was often his guest there. He doesn't explain how the book came to be his. There is one more note from Roberts, under the portrait of Lord Riddell (plate XLIX) mentioning his being at a press dinner given for him in 1919.---------Aside from being third in charge, and legal advisor,of the American War Mission during the Interallied War Conference of 1917,the first American mission to a European council in history,Paul Cravath is mainly known for his "Cravath System" which transformed the way law firms work and is still in use today. The "Cravath system" included hiring new law school graduates, then training them within the firm as associates, and eventually inviting the best to become partners.Throughout the twentieth century most of the growth of the big law firms relied on this system of recruiting, internal training, and loyalty to the firm.-----A nice self portrait of the Artist at work, all the better for being within a copy of Orpen's fascinating war memoir.:

Having gathered a considerable collection of hymenoptera he described the various species, finding more than 3,500 new ones.

        American Indian Stories

Washington: Hayworth Publishing House. 1921. First Edition, signed by the author on the half-title in purple ink, "Zitkala-Sa / (Gertrude Bonnin)". 8vo; 195 pp; tan cloth stamped in red and black in Indian design with author and title in black on front and spine. Lower tips rubbed, spine soiled, about very good. This double signature - Native American and European names - is unusual. Zitkala-Sa [Gertrude Simmons Bonnin] (1876-1938), Indian author and reformer, was born in South Dakota on a reservation. As a child she was educated at a Quaker missionary school in Indiana, and during this time, she grew estranged from her family and from Sioux traditions. She became painfully aware of the tension between tradition and acculturation and of the great lack of understanding people had about Native American cultures. In response, she adopted the named Zitkala-Sa (Red Bird) and began writing about her experiences. Her realizations as a young woman about the difficulties of being part Native American led her to lifelong work in political reform and cultural education. As a political activist, Bonnin worked with and founded several organizations focused on Native American rights. She served as secretary of the first Indian reform organization managed by Indians, the Society of American Indians. She was also the editor of the society's magazine, the American Indian Magazine from 1918 to 1919. After the dissolution of the organization, she founded the National Council of American Indians and was president of the organization until her death in 1938. She also worked through the General Federation of Women's Clubs, helping establish the Indian Welfare Committee in 1921. She and her husband, Raymond Bonnin, lobbied the Congress and the Bureau of Indian Affairs on behalf of the Sioux and the Utes. Bonnin, a talented orator since her youth, also lectured on Sioux culture and the need for reform, appearing in traditional costume. Although she devoted much of her energy to lobbying and political activity, Bonnin also worked toward her goals of education and reform through writing. As a young woman, wrote several autobiographical essays and traditional Indian tales, and these were published in magazines such as Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Monthly. In 1901 she published her first book, Old Indian Legends. After resigning from her postion as editor of American Indian Magazine, Bonnin spent more time lobbying than writing. However, she did not abandon printed word as a tool for reform. American Indian Stories is one of the few literary works she published after working for the American Indian Magazine. The book features reprints of her earlier stories and essays published in Harper's and Atlantic Monthly. Most of her published writings were essays and poetry printed in magazines. "Partly an attempt to convey an utterly alien type of mentality, with (mostly) a British social setting; also the moral collapse of the Western world and the future evolution of man.... Interesting ideas, some good moments, but on the whole without the charm of its predecessor." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 191. "THE BRIGHT MESSENGER was not just the long- awaited finale to JULIUS LEVALLON, but the last piece in Blackwood's grand design .... the culmination of Blackwood's crusade to make people aware of beauty in the world.... There are moments [here] when we see the Blackwood of THE CENTAUR and JULIUS LEVALLON... [but] he was finding it harder to regain that magic.... Once he had completed THE BRIGHT MESSENGER Blackwood had nothing else to tell the world." - Ashley, Algernon Blackwood: An Extraordinary Life, pp. 245-8.         GEOMETRIE UND ERFAHRUNG. [Geometry and Experience] [PP.121-131]

Julius Springer, Berlin 1921 - Einstein, Albert. GEOMETRIE UND ERFAHRUNG. [Geometry and Experience] [PP.121-131]. Julius Springer, Berlin, 1921. Januar 1921. 8VO., 20PP. With 2 text illustrations. Original printed cream wrapper. First Edition. Weil 115. HBS52699. At 1921 at the Prussian Acedemy's commemorative session honoring Frederick the Great, founder of the Academy, Einstein delivered this lecture in which he summed up his views on the geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world. Here he gave his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "Insofar as the Laws of Mathematics refer to the external world, they are not certain; and insofar as they are certain, they do not refer to reality" [D.B.S. Vol. 4, p. 330]. A fine copy. This is a mature work of Einstein, published when he was 42 years old, and in the year he received the Nobel Prize in Physics. [Attributes: First Edition]
