Original manuscript titled 'Mr Dampier's Jewel'

Wingen, Hunter Valley, 1921. Graphite manuscript, 210 leaves measuring 224 x 175 mm., well preserved in the original presentation binding of full polished black roan with gilt lettering. Unpublished manuscript on William Dampier. Original manuscript of a fictional tale based on the life of William Dampier, from the pen of Hunter Valley pastoralist William Edward Abbott (1844-1924).It appears this manuscript passed from William Edward to his nephew John Henry Abbott, who in turn presented it to fellow pastoralist Henry White. The front endpaper is inscribed as follows: 'To H.L. White, Belltrees with the compliments of J.H.M. Abbott July 30, 1921. This volume contains the original rough MS of my uncles 'Mr Dampier's Jewel' which was written at Murrulla, Wingen, in May and June 1921'.William Abbott was one of the most successful and influential graziers of his generation. He took control of the family run at Wingen at 16 years of age, and over years of indefatigable labour transformed it into a pre-eminent pastoral property of New South Wales by the close of the nineteenth century. A wide and curious reader, Abbot 'would drink tea and lace his conversation with quotations from the Bible and Shakespeare'. We have no evidence this manuscript was ever published. The life and times of Dampier held an enduring fascination for members of the Abbott family. Indeed, William's nephew John Henry, himself a successful author, published a book titled The Story of William Dampier (Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1911).

"Aron Tänzer (* 30. Januar 1871 in Preßburg; 26. (Wikipedia)

The Emperor Jones; Diff'rent; The Straw. [With:] Typed Letter, signed ("Gene") to his father-in-law

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1921. First edition. x, [ii], 285, [1] pp. 8vo. Publisher's tan paper-covered boards, stamped in black, orange cloth spine, stamped in black, front board tender, else near fine. In custom morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Inscribed to His Father-in-Law, with a Letter Concerning Crucifixes A presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper: "To the father-in-law that fate lets me see so little of that one would think we regarded each other as the bad 'in-laws' of the story books - which I'm sure we don't. In all affectionate remembrance, Son-in-law Eugene." The recipient is Edward Boulton, the father of O'Neill's second wife, Agnes Boulton.Together with a letter, dated November 1, 1925, in which O'Neill thanks his father-in-law for the gift of a crucifix, mentioning he is finishing a play, and suggesting a visit. It merits quoting in full:"Dear Eddie: I have been meaning to write you every evening to thank you for the crucifix, but something has always turned up to prevent me. It certainly is a beauty, the finest I have ever seen - and most tortured! Your sending me this makes me think I'll start collecting crucifixes as a hobby. I have four now arranged around the study. When am I going to see you? Aggie has to go to New York soon to have Shane's tonsils out, and will be gone for about a week, during which time I shall be by my lonesome out here - finishing up a new play. Perhaps you can come down and keep me company and Agnes says Cecil might be with her in New York, attending to her business about her novel and stories. Tell her, by the way, that she has certainly done some fine work. All best, and thanks again for the crucifix. It sure is a beautiful thing. Always, Gene."O'Neill was, of course, a lapsed Catholic who suffered greatly because of his inability to find salvation in religion. Religion featured prominently in some of his plays, including Lazarus Laughed, which he was working on at the time. This was also the time that O'Neill finally quit drinking - it is tempting to see a connection with his sobriety, the subject matter of his current work, the birth of his daughter Oona in May of 1925, and his interest in collecting crucifixes. An incredible letter, touching on O'Neill's writing, family, and religious concerns.

In all affectionate remembrance, Son-in-law Eugene." The recipient is Edward Boulton, the father of O'Neill's second wife, Agnes Boulton. Together with a letter, dated November 1, 1925, in which O'Neill thanks his father-in-law for the gift of a crucifix, mentioning he is finishing a play, and suggesting a visit. It merits quoting in full: "Dear Eddie: I have been meaning to write you every evening to thank you for the crucifix, but something has always turned up to prevent me. Always, Gene." O'Neill was, of course, a lapsed Catholic who suffered greatly because of his inability to find salvation in religion. Le Piege de Meduse

1921. BRAQUE, Georges. Le Piège de Méduse. By Eric Satie. [32] pp. With three woodcuts printed in colour by Braque. Folio, 330 x 235 mm, bound in full morocco binding by Nathalie Berjon. Paris: Editions de la Galerie Simon (Daniel Henry Kahnweiler), 1921.This scarce work contains Braque's first original book illustrations. As is typical of Kahnweiler's books, it combines the work of two of the leading figures in the Parisian art world of the time, the artist Braque and the composer Satie. The play is a Dada work, and the woodcuts are Cubist, but the book works well as a whole, and it has become one of the key monuments of early twentieth-century book illustration. One of 90 copies on Holland of a total edition of 112. Signed by Braque and Eric Satie. The Artist and the Book 33. Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, No. 29. Dora Vallier, Braque, The Complete Graphics, Catalogue Raisonne 13. A Century of Artists Books 122.
