Pyle, artist-author, living in the latter half of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth, had the fine faculty of transposing himself into any chosen period of history and making its people flesh and blood again --- not just historical puppets. His characters were sketched with both words and picture; with both words and picture he ranks as a master, with a rich personality which makes his work individual and attractive in either medium… Important and interesting to the student of history, the adventure-lover, and the artist, as they are, these Pirate stories and pictures have been scattered through many magazines and books. Here, in this volume, they are gathered together for the first time, perhaps not just as Mr. Pyle would have done, but with a completeness and appreciation of the real value of the material which the author's modesty might not have permitted." (Merle Johnson, Foreword).Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941) was a major American painter, print-maker and illustrator. Early in life he displayed his talent for art by earning money as a sign painter for local businessmen. After graduation from high school he went to Chicago to study at the Art Institute. During the summers he serviced farm equipment for the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and traveled to the American Southwest. Both the Rock Island and Santa Fe Railroads used his scenic paintings for advertising. In 1900 Townsend began to study under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, Delaware, after which he studied briefly in Paris and in London. He returned to Chicago in 1904 to teach for a short time at the Academy of Fine Arts, after which he moved to Leonia, New Jersey, to begin a successful career illustrating magazines such as Harper's, Century, Everybody's, and McClure's as well as a number of books. In 1912 he established a studio in northern France so that he could be close to both Paris and London. The onset of war forced Townsend to return to the United States, where he resumed his work as an illustrator. He began his war service drawing posters before receiving his captain's commission in 1918. Much of Townsend's work during the war focuses on the human element. He produced a number of images showing how the rigors of combat eventually leave little to distinguish between winners and losers in war. After the war Townsend returned to illustrating. His experiences with the AEF, War Diary of a Combat Artist, were published in 1991.BAL, 16416

Autograph letter signed 'E Rutherford' to Charles Herman Viol, 8 January 1921. Three pages on two sheets.

Important letter from Rutherford to Charles Herman Viol requesting information about the production of radium, in preparation for a series of lectures he was to deliver at The Royal Institution. "From 1921, when he succeeded [J. J.] Thomson, until his death, Rutherford was professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution in London, a post that entailed several lectures each year" (DSB). Rutherford (1871-1937) had moved in 1919 from Manchester to Cambridge, where he was director of the Cavendish Laboratory. There he continued his research on radioactivity, mainly in collaboration with James Chadwick, work which depended on a steady supply of radioactive materials. Since 1913 Viol had been director of research at the US Standard Chemical Company, the first successful large-scale producer of radium, and editor of its in-house journal Radium. He was thus in an excellent position to respond to Rutherford's request. Rutherford letters with significant scientific content are rare on the market.<br/><br/> The letter reads, in full: <br/><br/> <i>Dear Dr Viol<br/><br/> I am giving a course of lectures on Radioactivity at the Royal Institution beginning late in February. I shall be obliged if you can give me any general information with regard to the following: 1. Average Ur plus Th content of the carnotite used for separation of Ra. 2. A rough idea of methods of commercial separation with rough figures of amount of ore, acid, etc. to yield one gram Ra. Probably you have published something along these lines. Possibly you could give me some idea of the annual output of Ra for the world & an estimate of the amount so far separated. <br/><br/> If it is not too much trouble, I should be glad of rough figures of this kind to introduce in one of my lectures. Also I should be glad of any general information re commercial separation that you may have on hand & do not regard as confidential. <br/><br/> I am always interested to receive your publication Radium which I read with interest. <br/><br/> Yours sincerely, <br/><br/> E Rutherford</i><br/><br/> "Viol had been trained as a physicist and had studied under eminent physicists such as Albert Michelson and Robert Millikan at the University of Chicago. His advisor was the chemist Herbert McCoy, known for his study of radioelements. In 1914 Viol had just completed his dissertation on the chemical properties and relative activities of the radio-products of thorium. To a young, promising scientist, the Standard Chemical Company offered the chance to enter a rapidly developing industry and become its pioneer. Viol was among those who improved the method for recovering radium from carnotite ore and foresaw several possible uses for radium salts ... <br/><br/> "<i>Radium</i> was a monthly publication devoted to "the chemistry, physics, and therapeutics of radium and radioactive substances". It was published by the Radium Publishing Company, yet another of the Standard Chemical Company's subsidiaries. The idea of printing a house journal was mainly based on its French counterpart <i>Le Radium</i> (1904)." The Standard Chemical Company's commercial interests in radium were principally its medical applications. Viol intended <i>Radium</i> "to legitimize the Standard Chemical Company within the community of American physicians and use it as a marketing tool for the company's products. His co-editor was William Cameron, a medical doctor who was the ?rst in the United States to report treatment in a patient with breast cancer using massive doses of the material" (Maria Rentetzi, 'The U.S. Radium Industry: Industrial In-house Research and the Commercialization of Science,' <i>Minerva</i> 46 (2008), pp. 437-62). <br/><br/> The Standard Chemical Company reached the apogee of its fame in May 1921, when Marie Curie, the discoverer of radium, visited the United States. One week after her arrival, President Harding presented her with a gift of one gram of the rare element, prepared by Company. It was at her personal request that a visit to the Standard Chemical Company's facilities was included in her busy schedule.. Three pages on two sheets, 177 x 111 mm, address (Newnham Cottage, Queen's Road, Cambridge) embossed in upper right corner (a few light soil marks, neat horizontal fold)

Travels in Arabia Deserta. With a new Preface by the Author, Introduction by T.E. Lawrence, and all the Original Maps, Plans and Cuts

London: Jonathan Cape and the Medici Society (Philip Warner), 1921., 1921. FIRST EDITION THUS. 2 volumes, large octavo. With folding colour map in pocket at end of volume I, frontispieces, and numerous maps, plans and illustrations (some folding), pp.(xxvi), 623; (xiv), 690. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, with coated black endpapers, top edge gilt. Some minor wear, extremities sunned, cloth a little rubbed, spine tips frayed. Very good indeed. Originally published in 1888 at the Cambridge University Press, this important Cape edition is entirely reset, with a new preface by Doughty and an essay by T.E. Lawrence. During the Great War Lawrence urged the British Government to issue serial parts of this work as a handbook for officers serving in Arabia. Following hostilities he lobbied to republish the whole book. Duckworth and Doubleday declined and eventually Medici employee Herbert J. Cape, who appreciated Doughty's work, took up the challenge and produced this brand new edition of 500 copies, being the first ever book from Jonathan Cape, Publisher, on 15th January 1921, sold at a nosebleed inducing price of nine guineas (about £1000 today). Six large paper copies signed by Doughty and Lawrence were produced, and a quick reprint followed without the Lawrence note, withdrawn by him "because it's in bad taste". HOWARD, Michael: Jonathan Cape, Publisher (1971). Listed in National Geographic's 100 Greatest Adventure books

        THE SPIRIT OF THE SYNAGOGUE.

No Place, No Maker (The Artist) N.D. - Large American bronze plaque, Bronze circular plaque with Biblical verse: "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations" (Isiah 56: 7) . Featuring several low-relief ritual synagogue scenes, including the blowing of the shofar, the blessing of the lulav, the reading of the Torah, and a Priestly blessing. With a central female allegorical figure holding a Torah scroll. Hebrew Decalogue at top and Hebrew "Sh&#146;ma Yisra&#146;el" at side. 12.25 inches in diameter, with hanger on rear. An article in the May 21, 1921 Reform Advocate about the piece relates that it was "designed to represent the Synagog [sic] as a contrast to a panel recently painted for the Boston Library, wherein the Synagog [sic] was outrageously misrepresented as a disheveled old woman. In the present plaque the Synagog is symbolized as a radiant young women and the accompanying symbolization reflects the Jewish spirit as buoyant and continuously unfolding its message that &#145;My house shall be a house of prayer for all nations. &#146;" The Artist, Rose Kohler, was the daughter of Reform movement leader Kaufmann Kohler, and the granddaughter of Reform leader David Einhorn. The Jewish Women&#146;s Archive notes that "Kohler&#146;s best-known works include The Spirit of the Synagogue, a detailed medallion with an inscription that reads &#145;My House shall be called a House of Prayer for all peoples, &#146; replicas of which can be found in religious centers throughout the country . She wrote many articles on the origins and development of Jewish art. " (JWA, 2015) . See also Who Was Who in American Art (1985) . Very Good Condition (women-4-15)

Original, hand-painted dust jacket design concepts for the first and second volumes of Winston Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1950s. Here are two original, hand painted and lettered dust jacket design concepts for the American first edition of Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples by the influential mid-Twentieth Century book jacket designer Philip Grushkin (1921-1998). The designs are executed in gouache, watercolor, ink, and paste-down image on board.  The Volume I design measures 8.5 x 9.5 inches, the Volume II design 8.5 x 7.25 inches.  The design for The Birth of Britain is what we may assume to be an early concept, as the published design shares only the general red and blue colors and banded layout. Grushkin's Volume II design is of particular interest as it features the title Liberty and Sovereignty instead of the published title The New World. The Volume II dust jacket design is otherwise more similar to the published jacket, with the same style lettering and photo of Churchill used in the final design for the first volume. Emended to the spine of Grushkin's design for this volume are indecipherable penciled notes, presumably those of the publisher. Together these jackets present an example of the multi-stage process Grushkin employed in developing a jacket design, wherein he experimented with different images, arrangements, and type styles.  Both jacket designs are handsomely and professionally framed in dark brown wood with low glare UV Plexiglass, beveled mats, and a sturdy wire hanger on the rear.  A History of the English-Speaking Peoples is Churchill's sweeping history and last great work.  The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not finished and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later.  The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria.  Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself.  The work was published in four volumes between 1956 and 1958.  The New York Times called Philip Grushkin "a book designer whose work made him the standard-bearer throughout the publishing industry," and his list of covers include such significant works as  A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, works by such eminent authors as Truman Capote, E.B. White, C.S. Lewis, and, not least, Winston Churchill.  Born in Brooklyn to Jewish-Russian immigrants, Grushkin developed an early interest in book jackets, and as a teen began collecting books with design that appealed to him. Of particular interest was the work of George Salter (1897-1967) who would later become Grushkin's mentor during his time studying calligraphy and design as an art student at Cooper Union. After the Second World War, Grushkin started his career in earnest, working for nearly all of the major publishers, and eventually becoming art director and vice president at Harry N. Abrams. In his book, Philip Grushkin: A Designer's Archive, author Paul Shaw writes, "Grushkin forged his own brand of modernism, a unique mixture of bold typographic hand lettering, dynamic background patterns, vibrant colors, and abstract."  Grushkin was a holdout for older methods in a changing industry.  "Hand-lettering was his mantra and muse. A computer, he argued, obliterated all that felt alive."  (NYT, Oct. 5, 1998).

The Spoil Bank Association Limited Cheque Book

(Ditchling: St. Dominic's Press, 1921). Small oblong quarto. 50ff., consisting of printed checks bearing a wood-engraving titled "S. Joseph and S. Dominica in Vesica" by David Jones. The Spoil Bank Association was established at Ditchling in order to hold the land and manage the money of the Guild of S. Joseph & S. Dominic in the early days of the community at Ditchling. The name is derived from a strip mining term, which refers to the pile of refuse created by the excavation of earth materials on a mining site, undoubtedly intentional, given the anti-capitalist views of Gill and Pepler. While documents referencing the Spoil Bank Association have occasionally surfaced, only one endorsed check is recorded, and this is held at Notre Dame. Taylor & Sewell note that Barclay?'s Bank ?"refused to cash or negotiate these cheques.?" It is believed that no more than 100 checks were printed, making this complete and unused checkbook, which contains check numbers B1 - B50, of the utmost rarity. The book retains its plain gray wrappers, and apart from a mild crease down the center, it is about fine.

The World's Championship Chess Match Played at Havana between Jose Raul Capablanca and Dr Emauel Lasker with an introduction, the scores of all the games annotated by the champion. Together with Statistical matter and the biographies of the two masters

39 pages with two plates, diagrams and table. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original red cloth with gilt lettering to cover. (Betts: 27-30) Limited to 600 copies. First edition.Contains a general introduction, cover the match and its arrangement, the fourteen games, with notes by Capablanca, a tabular summary of the match and short biographical sketches of the players with photographic portraits. In 1911, José Raúl Capablanca first challenged Emanuel Lasker for the world championship. Lasker had this to say in his newspaper column: "Capablanca's compatriots have a desire to see him contest the world's championship. Today (February 28th) I received a letter from Senor Paredes of the Habana Chess Club, asking me to play with Capablanca in the Cuban city a match of ten games up, draws not to count. This proposition is not acceptable. In the present period of draw-making, such a match might last half a year and longer. I am, of course, deliberating upon my reply, but I do not think that I shall care to play in a semi-tropical climate more than a few games." Several months later, Dr. Lasker countered with a list of his own terms, but Capablanca disputed many of them, most notably a 2-wins victory requirement. And so, the negotiations broke down over differences of the match conditions. In the decade that followed, Capablanca took the chess world by storm, getting the best of nearly every top player of that period. By 1920, Lasker recognized Capablanca's prowess, and resigned the title to him, saying, "You have earned the title not by the formality of a challenge, but by your brilliant mastery." Capablanca, having felt robbed of his chance to win the title in the traditional fashion, convinced Lasker to play, but Lasker did so only on condition that his resignation be accepted, and he be regarded as the challenger. Lasker's resignation was not widely recognized at the time, nor today, therefore this match is generally regarded as the one in which the title changed hands. In Havana, from March 15 to April 28, 1921, the match took place. Whomever you regard as the challenger, the winner was Capablanca, who prevailed without a single loss, +4 -0 =10. Four games down, with at most 10 more to play, Lasker resigned the match prematurely after Game 14, citing ill health, and Capablanca became the third World Chess Champion.Condition:A very good to fine copy.
