        American Indian Stories

Washington: Hayworth Publishing House. 1921. First Edition, signed by the author on the half-title in purple ink, "Zitkala-Sa / (Gertrude Bonnin)". 8vo; 195 pp; tan cloth stamped in red and black in Indian design with author and title in black on front and spine. Lower tips rubbed, spine soiled, about very good. This double signature - Native American and European names - is unusual. Zitkala-Sa [Gertrude Simmons Bonnin] (1876-1938), Indian author and reformer, was born in South Dakota on a reservation. As a child she was educated at a Quaker missionary school in Indiana, and during this time, she grew estranged from her family and from Sioux traditions. She became painfully aware of the tension between tradition and acculturation and of the great lack of understanding people had about Native American cultures. In response, she adopted the named Zitkala-Sa (Red Bird) and began writing about her experiences. Her realizations as a young woman about the difficulties of being part Native American led her to lifelong work in political reform and cultural education. As a political activist, Bonnin worked with and founded several organizations focused on Native American rights. She served as secretary of the first Indian reform organization managed by Indians, the Society of American Indians. She was also the editor of the society's magazine, the American Indian Magazine from 1918 to 1919. After the dissolution of the organization, she founded the National Council of American Indians and was president of the organization until her death in 1938. She also worked through the General Federation of Women's Clubs, helping establish the Indian Welfare Committee in 1921. She and her husband, Raymond Bonnin, lobbied the Congress and the Bureau of Indian Affairs on behalf of the Sioux and the Utes. Bonnin, a talented orator since her youth, also lectured on Sioux culture and the need for reform, appearing in traditional costume. Although she devoted much of her energy to lobbying and political activity, Bonnin also worked toward her goals of education and reform through writing. As a young woman, wrote several autobiographical essays and traditional Indian tales, and these were published in magazines such as Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Monthly. In 1901 she published her first book, Old Indian Legends. After resigning from her postion as editor of American Indian Magazine, Bonnin spent more time lobbying than writing. However, she did not abandon printed word as a tool for reform. American Indian Stories is one of the few literary works she published after working for the American Indian Magazine. The book features reprints of her earlier stories and essays published in Harper's and Atlantic Monthly. Most of her published writings were essays and poetry printed in magazines. NAW I, pp. 198-200, Bloom Native American Women Writers, and Littlefield and Parins A Biobibliography of Native American Writers, 1772-1924. See an Image.

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-349 [350: printer's imprint] [351-352: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks],. original decorated brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, bottom edge untrimmed.. A near fine, bright copy in near fine pictorial dust jacket printed. on tan paper stock with light wear along upper edges (jacket trimmed. just a bit taller than the book) and some age-darkening to spine. panel. Signed and dated "Oxford October 1921" by Elizabeth Belloc. (daughter of English writer Hilaire Belloc, one of Blackwood's. closest friends) on recto of first blank. A charming provenance. Rare. in jacket. (#71686). First edition. A sequel to JULIUS LE VALLON (1916), continuing the author's study of a man partially possessed by a Pan-like elemental. "Partly an attempt to convey an utterly alien type of mentality, with (mostly) a British social setting; also the moral collapse of the Western world and the future evolution of man.... Interesting ideas, some good moments, but on the whole without the charm of its predecessor." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 191. "THE BRIGHT MESSENGER was not just the long- awaited finale to JULIUS LEVALLON, but the last piece in Blackwood's grand design .... the culmination of Blackwood's crusade to make people aware of beauty in the world.... There are moments [here] when we see the Blackwood of THE CENTAUR and JULIUS LEVALLON... [but] he was finding it harder to regain that magic.... Once he had completed THE BRIGHT MESSENGER Blackwood had nothing else to tell the world." - Ashley, Algernon Blackwood: An Extraordinary Life, pp. 245-8. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature II, pp. 817-21. Bleiler (1978), p. 24. Reginald 01376. Ashley A.21.1.

GEOMETRIE UND ERFAHRUNG. [Geometry and Experience] [PP.121-131]

Julius Springer, Berlin 1921 - Einstein, Albert. GEOMETRIE UND ERFAHRUNG. [Geometry and Experience] [PP.121-131]. Julius Springer, Berlin, 1921. Erweiterte Fassung des Festvortrages gehalten an der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin am 27. Januar 1921. 8VO., 20PP. With 2 text illustrations. Original printed cream wrapper. First Edition. Weil 115. HBS52699. At 1921 at the Prussian Acedemy's commemorative session honoring Frederick the Great, founder of the Academy, Einstein delivered this lecture in which he summed up his views on the geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world. Here he gave his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "Insofar as the Laws of Mathematics refer to the external world, they are not certain; and insofar as they are certain, they do not refer to reality" [D.B.S. Vol. 4, p. 330]. A fine copy. This is a mature work of Einstein, published when he was 42 years old, and in the year he received the Nobel Prize in Physics. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Oracle

Manas Press, Rochester, Ny 1921 - Small Octavo, 64pp., Inscribed with a doodle by Claude Bragdon One of the most extraordinary figures of the popular intellectualism of the early 20th century, Claude Bragdon was an architect and designer who dabbled in theosophy and the occult and wrote about it all with an infectious spirit and passion. Here, in this compact volume first published in 1921, he shares the psychic communications his second wife, Eugenie Julier Macauley, received from "a guardian spirit of supernatural goodness and wisdom." Refusing to use her mysterious insight for trivia matters, Eugenie asked of this "Oracle" only knowledge transcending human ken. These are the fruits of her paranormal gift. Other works by Bragdon available from Cosimo Classics: Merely Players, The Eternal Poles, Yoga for You, Four-Dimensional Vistas, Projective Ornament, The Beautiful Necessity, Architecture and Democracy, Episodes from An Unwritten History, and A Primer of Higher Space (The Fourth Dimension). American architect, stage designer, and writer CLAUDE FAYETTE BRAGDON (1866-1946) helped found the Rochester Architectural Club, in the city where he made his greatest mark as a building designer with structures including Rochester Central Station, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the First Universalist Church; he also designed Peterborough Bridge in Ontario. In later life, Bragdon worked on Broadway as scenic designer for 1930s productions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Hamlet, among others. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Aage Marcus, København/Oxford University Press, 1921. 43+9 tavler sider. Orig. kartonbind Velholdt eksmplar. Lette spor ved ryg. Illustreret med tegninger af Charles Christensen. With an English summary. Dansk

Series of 4 letters: 3 ALS and 1 LS + autograph additions, Cleveland OH, 1947-1951, 13 pages large 4to. With 1 envelope. Good condition. With interesting addenda (below).

. . Wood, Jasper (1921-2002), American civil rights activist, photographer and writer. - The letters are addressed to the American writer and editor (Carrefour Press) Michael Fraenkel (1896-1957), in the 1930s in Paris a close friend and furtherer of Henry Miller ("Boris" in Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" is modeled after him). - At the time when these letters were written young Jasper Wood made his first literary steps and was about to make a name of himself as a photographer. He was highly attracted by Fraenkel's concept of the spiritual death suffered by materialist Western man, as laid down in Fraenkel's books "Werther's Younger Brother" (1930), "Bastard Death (1936)" and "Death Is Not Enough"(1939) - a spiritual death to be overcome by the return to human love, which Wood refers to as "religiousness". - - 1) July 19, (1947). After their first meeting (in Fraenkel's home in New York) Wood writes he had been going "through a horrible Werther period" due to his "working in the commercial world" - "My photography has become my only creative outfit for the time being - and I have even sold some of it ... - - Our talk and the presence reveales how deeply you are motivated by this religiousness within your mind!!! With Miller its in his guts!!! And with Patchen its deep in his soul ..." Joyce, Picasso, and Freud were realizing this need for religiousness to a degree, yet "they were men of action - not men of love - and they went deep into the Bastard Death, which is the same as Lawrences Masturbative Man ..." - - 2) No date (1947). Lengthily discussing his book project "The Voice of the Apocalypse" in which he wishes to present (together with prospective co-authors like Fraenkel) "the general history of Apocalyptic writing", naming Celine, Henry Miller, Kenneth Patchen, Dylan Thomas and others. - "Is Giono an apocalyptic voice, or is he a pastoralist ... - - Did I tell you Bastard Death was the only book in English in Otto Rank's library when he died? Well it was, a signed copy ..." - - 3) (September 26, 1947). Again on the book project, and on Miller. "... Am enclosing a letter from Miller's wife that speaks for itself. As a man he seems about through - and as a writer just beginning. But for a man like Miller to have a wife say no - that's too much. He likes Lawrence - but remember how Lawrence hated the possessiveness of the word 'wife'. And when she refers to him as 'Henry Miller' it's too much. It sounds too much like God. Patchen and Miller create the same response - you don't - and therein lies your inviolate fineness ... - - Don't ever let what has happened to Miller in America happen to you. If it starts - well, go away again ... And keep your manhood. I need Miller in the book though - can you get him to cooperate, do you think? ... - - Oh, that Miller, he knew the need of destroying the artist in the man in his heart and soul and guts and then becomes more and more artist and less and less man. It's horrible - and if he knows what is going on ... it must hurt like hell. He needs someone like you now more than ever before ..." - - 4) June 24 (1951). Typewritten letter on post-war Europe. "... I can well imagine that you found Europe today not for people like us ... The blood is stale, and I believe that Lawrence would at long last give up on his loved Italy. The final straw is to read that a bunch of homosexuals are living in Lawrence's old home there. They are seemingly supported by Caresse Crosby - said group includes Pearl Kazin, Truman Capote, etc. ... Tennessee Williams ... has also stayed with this group. Death-stayed dead, that's the only word for it. Then ... those rather horrible long, exhausingly drawnout notebooks of Andre Gide. This to me seems to paint the inner exhaustion of that part of the world today ..." Subsequently discussing Pound and Celine - the latter "may become a saint ... Because through what appeared to be attacks upon the Jews he became the Jew through the world's attacks upon him. He bore the brunt - and he lives ... Most of the others may have experienced horror, but they did not come through. And today they live as parasites on the side of the ugly hulk that is left. - - I have been doing a great deal of photography. Enclosed is the announcement for a show I had in the winter ... Won first award at Cleveland Museum of Art for group of three negro photographs. Have also been photographing an ana-baptist sect ... the amish ... They are shrewd, hard, tight, hypocritical as any people ever were ... yet with a strange beauty in their children, and a clean hardness about their lives which is most attractive ... But when a people use their religious people use their orthodox beliefs as a shield against the encroachment of the material world, they are already in defeat ... The new quality is born of out Life through Death, and an Acceptance of the disease and all it was and ever can be. Accept, but no longer be prodded by - that is the greatness of living after coming from out of the valley of Death ..." (The announcement mentioned is still with the letter). - - Enclosed are a typewritten copy of another letter from JW to MF; another printed announcement of an exhibition; a letter by his wife Nancy to MF's wife Daphne (1947); a typewritten essay by Fraenkel on JP (4 pages); and photocopies of several letters from MF to JP, 1945-1951 (50 pages).
