1921. ITTEN, Johannes. Farbenkugel in 7 Lichtstufen und 12 Tönen. (Color sphere in 7 light values and 12 tones). Lithograph in 18 Colours. Folio, 475 x 320 mm. Issued as a supplement to: Utopia: Dokumente der Wirklichkeit (Utopia: Documents of reality), ed. Bruno Adler. 88 pp. Bound in original illustrated wrappers with 18 plates of which 11 are original lithographs by Itten. Preserved in a new cloth folding box. [Weimar: Utopia Verlag, 1921]. |~||~||~||~||~||~||~| First printing of this extremely rare and highly influential colour sphere. Itten referred to his twelve-point farbenkugel as "a clear and complete map of the world of colour." Although Itten was influenced by earlier colour studies, Otto Runge for instance, the twelve-part structure of his diagram marks an original departure. Itten correlated a twelve-point colour system based upon the twelve harmonic notes of the musical scale. Johannes Itten (1888-1967) is considered one of the greatest teachers of the art of colour in modern times. "The hallmark innovation of the Bauhaus was the Vorkurs (preliminary course), a requierd introductory class that provided intensive back-to-basics immersion in the fundamentals of color theory and composition, with an emphasis on the arrangement of tonalities to achieve specific optical effects… the Vorkurs was conceived and initially taught by Johannes Ittem, the extravagantly eccentric, mystically inclined Swiss Expressionist painter whom Gropius hired as 'form master'" (Martin Filler, "The Powerhouse of the New" in New York Review of Books, June 24, 2010, p. 26). His colour studies were central to theories of colour psychology and seasonal colour analysis. Itten was the first artist to connect colour palettes with four types of people, linking those types with the various seasons. His theories were later assimilated by the cosmetics industry, which continues to use Itten's seasonal colour analysis in the development of their products. The Itten plate is loose in a copy of Utopia, which is inscribed by Itten to the textile designer Elsi Giauque. A very fine copy, but with the text pages slighly browned as usual.

        Si le Grain ne Meurt

Paris [L'Imprimerie Sainte-Catherine, Bruges] (1920-1921). 2 volumes. 8vo., 220pp.; 166pp - Paris [L'Imprimerie Sainte-Catherine, Bruges] (1920-1921). 2 volumes. 8vo., 220pp.; 166pp. The first, privately issued edition of Gide's influential confessional memoir, issued four years prior to the first published edition, limited to twelve copies. Cyril Connolly, who included the book on his list of the 100 key books of the modern movement wrote that "Gide's autobiography is a work of art or rather the true portrait of the artist as a young man, for his horizon was much larger than Joyce's and he writes with an electric excitement". This first printing includes explicit passages suppressed in both the first published edition (1924) and the first English-language edition (New York, 1935) and was extremely controversial for its description of his sexual encounters with boys in North Africa. Considered one of his greatest works (certainly his most personal and revealing), the memoir recounts Gide's sexual awakening while on a journey to Algeria in 1893-94, where he met Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, who shocked him with their boldness. In Tunisia he lost his virginity at the age of twenty-three to Athman, a fourteen-year-old Arab boy, and came to accept his own homosexuality. Henceforth his published works invoked the never resolved tensions between a strict artistic discipline, a puritanical moralism, and the desire for unlimited sensual indulgence and abandonment to life. The memoir covers the first twenty-six years of his life Gide was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1947, the first openly gay man to have received the award. In the presentation speech offered at the award ceremony, the Swedish Academy stated "The significance of these memoirs thus is indicated in the mysterious Biblical quotation of the grain of wheat which here represents the personality: as long as the latter is sentient, deliberate, and egocentric, it dwells alone and without germinating power; it is only at the price of its death and its transmutation that it will acquire life and be able to bear fruit." Si le Grain ne Meurt was placed on the Catholic Church's list of prohibited books in 1952, the year after Gide's death.A lovely example bound in full green crushed violet morocco by Martin, raised dentelles, gilt decorations, all edges gilt, each volume is housed in a chemise and slipcased. The first volume (this example is #12) was issued in an edition of twelve copies and the second volume (#7) was issued in an edition of thirteen copies. Very small chip to the head of one chemise, spine of chemise lightly browned, otherwise fine, original wrappers present. Light wear to marbled boards of slipcase. Provenance Raoul Simonson, with his bookplate laid into the book. Laid into the book is a 1pp. ALS from Gide to Donald Allen, dated 1947. A beautiful example of an important twentieth century document. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Autograph letter signed on cigars

Vienna, May 26, 1921 - FREUD’S CIGARS. In this fine letter Sigmund Freud asks a friend visiting Holland to bring back his beloved Dutch cigars, writing in small part, “Although I could just as well rely on your taste, in case you get to The Hague and make the purchase there, I’ll give you the address Hagen Spinecka and the brand Soberanos (1400 [presumably a series of the Soberanos brand] 15 dozen). The enclosed 60 florin note is to cover this purchase.” In turn-of-the-century Vienna, the Austrian government maintained strict control over the tobacco industry, and Freud relied on friends to bring him the cigars he smoked endlessly. Freud, who was rarely seen without a cigar, smoked twenty each day for most of his life. When Freud nephew Harry declined a cigar at age 17, the great man declared, “My boy, smoking is one of the greatest and cheapest enjoyments in life, and if you decide in advance not to smoke, I can only feel sorry for you” (Gay, Freud: A Life for Our Time). Freud said late in life that cigars have “served me for precisely fifty years as protection and a weapon in the combat of life I owe to the cigar a great intensification of my capacity to work and a facilitation of my self-control” (Cohen, Freud on Coke). Freud’s close friend Hanns Sachs remarked that Freud “was so fond of smoking that he was somewhat irritated when men around him did not smoke. Consequently nearly all of those who formed the inner circle became more or less passionate cigar-smokers” (Sachs, Freud: Master and Friend). Freud’s cigars played a role in his psychoanalytic practice. Raymond De Saussure, a psychoanalyst who was himself analyzed by Freud in the 1920s, recalled the special role of the cigar in connecting the patient to his analyst sitting just out of view: “One was won over by the atmosphere of [Freud’s] office, a rather dark room, which opened onto a courtyard. Light came not from the windows but from the brilliance of that lucid, discerning mind. Contact was established only by means of his voice and the odor of the cigars he ceaselessly smoked” (Ruitenbeek, ed., Freud As We Knew Him). One year after writing this letter, Freud mentioned his enjoyment of Dutch cigars while vacationing in Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. He hailed “the “the glorious air, the water, the Dutch cigars, and the good food, all resembling an idyll as closely as one can get in this Central European hell.” Freud’s attachment to Dutch cigars was so great that he once observed that “there are plenty of fine cigars [in Holland]. In fact, I have sometimes thought of settling in Holland for that reason” (Puner, Sigmund Freud: His Life and Mind). This letter is a wonderful relic of the life of Sigmund Freud, who is famously said to have declared, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Analysis of the Mind [Signed]

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1921. First edition, second impression. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, second impression (light rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, bump to the rear board's upper and lower edges adjacent to the spine, small scuff to the rear board), SIGNED BY BERTRAND RUSSELL on the title page; a work in which Russell provides insights into how the human mind works. In 1911, Russell stated: “There is one great question. Can human beings know anything, and if so, what and how? This question is really the most essentially philosophical of all questions”. "The Analysis of the Mind", which originated in lectures given by him on the topic, constitutes one of Bertrand Russell's most important works on this topic. In it, Russell stated "The stuff of which the world of our experience is composed is, in my belief, neither mind nor matter, but something more primitive than either." One of the greatest thinkers of the 20th Century, Philosopher and Mathematician Bertrand Russell won the 1950 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought". Copies of the book are surprisingly uncommon and are more uncommon when in a condition as nice as is this copy. Signed copies of any printing of the First edition are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of this early Bertrand Russell work, SIGNED BY BERTRAND RUSSELL. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Selections From The Work of P.A. de Laszlo

London: Hutchinson and co., n.d. [1921], 1921. Signed Limited Edition. Folio. Bound in publisher's original quarter blue cloth over pale blue cloth boards, beveled edges with gilt ribbon motif to centre of front board, and gilt titles to spine; front and bottom edges uncut, blue and gilt marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 64 of his portaits in black and white photogravure. Dual language, French and English. With bookplate. In a limited edition of 300, this is number 1. Together with the author's signature to the limitation notice, and the author's bookplate opposite to half title, this is understood to be the author's own copy. Armorial bookplate, "Veritas Vincti Spes Mea In Deo", "P.A. Laszlo de Lombos, MVO". Binding is a little rubbed, bumping and some fraying to corners, bumping to spine ends, cloth is a little grubby. Internally clean, free from foxing, with some dampstaining throughout. The plates, and their labelled tissue guards, show well. De Laszlo was a significant, though now somewhat forgotten, portrait painter, perhaps one of the most significant of the late Victorian and early twentieth century periods. His subjects were typically aristocratic, or royal, or high ranking members of the Catholic church; this volume includes a representative sample, featuring the King Edward VII, Prince Chlodwig Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst, and Pope Leo XIII - the last of which made his name in Europe. He lived and worked in Hungary for many years, though his fame spread across Europe, until the death of his young daugther in 1903 led him to move to London and become naturalized as a British citizen. In 1909, Edward VII made him a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. Despite this, he was interned during the First World War. Following Walter Sickert, de Laszlo was made President of the Royal Society of British Arists in 1930, demonstrating the esteem in which his work was held.

Publisher's cloth spine and boards, color plate affixed to front cover. Spine soiled, small crease to frontispiece plate. In a custom cloth slipcase with red morocco label. First edition, no. 21 of 50 copies only on Japan vellum stock, signed by Merle Johnson on the limitation page. Illustrated with 36 full-page plates (of which 12 are in color) on glossy paper, and numerous illustrations in black and white throughout the text, this copy EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED on the endsheets with 7 watercolor drawings (5 full-page) by Merle Johnson, signed ("Merle Johnson" or "M.J.") xvii, [1], 247 pp. 4to. With 7 Merle Johnson Watercolors of Piratical Scenes. The deluxe edition on Japan vellum of this collection of pirate tales and illustrations by Howard Pyle, compiled by Merle Johnson. This copy marvelously extra-illustrated by Merle Johnson with 7 full- and double-page watercolor illustrations of pirates. These are not the grim, hardened pirates of Pyle's illustrations - Johnson's pirates are drawn in a humorous, cartoon style that blends the historical and the modern. In one double-page spread a flapper in evening dress guides a pirate towards the end of a plank by the barrel of a gun. Another double-page spread at the rear of the book shows a pirate burying his chest of treasure as a film crew shoots in the background.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on one 4to sheet, Taorimina, Nov. 9, 1921

      - Lawrence writes to Mr. Clark addressing his remarks on "Women in Love," published in 1921 and offers personal information about his current circumstances. Lawrence begins by saying, "I thought at first your letter was a legal document: then I thought it was somebody pulling my leg?but?you really mean it?." This seems to be a reply to Clark who must have said something positive about "Women in Love," which was a pleasant surprise to Lawrence. He writes, "the middle class readers have tried so hard to insult me for Women in Love, that I am quite glad to get your letter and feel that there is somebody who can read it as I imagined it might be read." Lawrence continues on the second page clearly not knowing who Clark is. "Write again if you choose. If you wish, tell me who & what you are. For my own part - I was born in the working classes - am 36 years old, have a wife - live here in Sicily in the winter & move about in the summer - earn perhaps £400 a year all told by my writing?." He ends the letter and signs, "D. H. Lawrence.". While not stated who Mr. Clark is, it is possible that he is John Clark the export bookseller at 12 Ludgate Square, London who around this time asked for copies of Lawrence's books to be sent to Toronto and London as noted in "The Letters of D.H. Lawrence " (Cambridge University Press edition of 2000, page 520). This same Mr. Clark also placed orders for works of James Joyce with the Paris bookstore, Shakespeare and Co., in 1922. If Clark liked "Women in Love" as much as it is suggested in the letter, with the genuine feelings that Lawrence felt from him, then it is most certainly possible that he promoted the book and received orders for it. In 1921, Lawrence was living with his wife, Frieda, at Fontana Vecchia on the outskirts of Taormina in Sicily. It was in 1921 that "Women in Love" was published in America by Thomas Seltzer and in England with Secker. Repair across centerfold, some chipping at right margin above centerfold. To the best of our knowledge the letter is unpublished.
