The Friendly Arctic. The Story of Five Years in Polar Regions. Illustrated.

New York, NY: The Macmillan Company, 1921., 1921. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by the author. Octavo, pp. xxxi; 784. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, in a stylish photographic dustjacket. Illustrated with two fold out maps, and several photographs. Fore edge and tail edge roughly trimmed. Cloth remains in very good condition, some damp staining extending along top half of front board, corners rubbed, endcaps pushed. Two large folding maps in pocket at rear, one in colour, uncoloured map somewhat tanned, pocket with small discoloured area. Internally clean, with very minor tanning to margins. Textblock has 'rippling' throughout, although this has not affected clarity of text/illustrations. Dustjacket in like, with some damp staining, dustiness, and light creasing to extremities; minor chips at ends of spine panel. Stefansson's weighty tome is an account of his five-year exploration of the Canadian Arctic, including his discovery of the edge of the continental shelf. It also recounts the details of his time spent investigating the lives of the Copper Inuit, including records of their supposedly all-meat diet. Author's inscription to flyleaf reads "Inscribed to Sidney Shea, by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Pittsburgh, January 16 1921". Of his icy exploration, Stefansson is reputed to have said that "there are two kinds of Arctic problems, the imaginary, and the real. Of the two, the imaginary are the most real."

        Faust

Munchen / Munich: Julius Schroder Verlag, 1921. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. Sepp Frank. #19 of 25 copies, printed on fine Holland paper and a beautiful production overall. This is the deluxe edition of a book that is extravagant in the regular edition of 190 copies. In this edition artist Sepp Frank has signed the limitation page (as in the regular edition) and each of the 25 plates. (There is an additional small image that is not signed in either edition) The plates are very Munich-1920 in their intensity. This is a massive folio edition: 16.75" tall x 13" wide. 220 pp. + limitation leaf. Bound in full vellum with spine and boards ruled and lettered in gilt, two loose silk bookmarks, in vellum-bound slipcase with a large inset etched metal plate (same image as plate 2 in the book). Vellum binding by Knorr & Hirth with age toning and one darkened spot, slipcase with moderate soiling and light wear, contents excellent overall with the exception of pp. 44/45 where there is a shadow from a contemporary Julius Shroder publishing prospectus that was laid-in (still present). Those pages are text only, no image affected. This is a very heavy-paper book that can easily shake loose its contents and that is starting here. No pages actually loose but the bottom gutter (the gatherings are both sewn and glued) is showing occasionally. No foxing on any of the pages or plates, very clean contents. I have never seen a copy of the limitation of 25, on the better paper and with all of the plates signed by the artist. Book weighs about 15 pounds and will be billed at cost.

        Mitsou: Quarante Images par Baltusz

Erlenbach-Zurich & Leipzig: Rotapfel-Verlag, 1921. Small quarto, original ivory paper boards lettered in black, original glassine wrapper. Lightest edgewear to wrappers, occasional crease to inner margins. Housed in a custom clamshell box. First edition of the painter Balthus's first book, the wordless true story of his runaway cat, depicted in forty ink drawings. Mitsou was published when Balthus was thirteen years old, thanks to the efforts of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who was romantically entangled with Balthus's mother. A dedicated mentor to the young artist, Rilke contributed a preface to Mitsou, and upon the book's publication he observed: "People hardly want to believe that a boy of this age is capable of narration of such substance. . . . it is indeed here, with a childlike yet already accomplished technique, that something is shown in its entirety, beyond which one can go no farther" (Weber, 53). Balthus's expressionistic drawings follow the stray cat Mitsou from her sudden appearance on a city bench through her days within his family circle to her final disappearance, a blow that leaves her young host in tears. Balthus, an elusive and shadowy figure in later life, would famously title his own self-portrait "The King of Cats." Text in French. A stunning copy.

        Analysis of the Mind [Signed]

George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1921, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, First edition, second impression. A Very Good copy of the first edition, second impression (light rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, bump to the rear board's upper and lower edges adjacent to the spine, small scuff to the rear board), SIGNED BY BERTRAND RUSSELL on the title page; a work in which Russell provides insights into how the human mind works. In 1911, Russell stated: "There is one great question. Can human beings know anything, and if so, what and how? This question is really the most essentially philosophical of all questions". "The Analysis of the Mind", which originated in lectures given by him on the topic, constitutes one of Bertrand Russell's most important works on this topic. In it, Russell stated "The stuff of which the world of our experience is composed is, in my belief, neither mind nor matter, but something more primitive than either." One of the greatest thinkers of the 20th Century, Philosopher and Mathematician Bertrand Russell won the 1950 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought". Copies of the book are surprisingly uncommon and are more uncommon when in a condition as nice as is this copy. Signed copies of any printing of the First edition are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of this early Bertrand Russell work, SIGNED BY BERTRAND RUSSELL. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

14 Autograph Letters Signed and one Typed Letter Signed. Correspondence between Yarovoff and Oliver Sayler.

Moscow: Nikolai Yarovoff-23. 1921 - 14 Autograph Letters Signed and one Typed Letter Signed, approx. 25 pp, various sizes, Moscow, April 24, 1921 to September 27, 1923, most on lined paper, a few on ARA stationery, to Oliver Sayler, some browning and a few corners torn; together with 2 typed carbons from Sayler to Yarovoff, and various checks and receipts for food parcels. A fascinating correspondence between Yarovoff and Sayler, Yarovoff being one set of Oliver Sayler's "eyes and ears" in Russia. Yarovoff, a photographer (best known for his photograph of Anna Pavlova with her dog), an artist and a critic, had known Sayler from his travels round Russia in 1918-19, and indeed Sayler acknowledges Yarovoffin his book Russian Theater [1922]. Yarovoff, desperate for any work outside Russia, began to write articles which Sayler placed in American publications, silently taking a commission of 50 percent. This upset the Russian considerably when he discovered this, and by April 1923, Sayler had broken off their correspondence. The present correspondence deals with the food situation and the arrival of food parcels, theatrical performances, and the lack of clear communication on Sayler's side. There is a freshness to Yarovoff's reporting of the turmoil of post Revolutionary Russia, and his first letter of September 27, 1921 is 12 pages long and very considered. However, by 1923 a postcard sufficed. Yarovoff describes his work at the A.R.A. (salaries are 5-6 dollars a month, with as many as 30 men working for the price of one American); his desire to escape to Berlin to get healthcare for his wife; his hope that Sayler get him some accreditation in the American Press allowing him to do interviews, etc. As the communication on Sayler's side declines so the tone of the letters change until they break apart, when Yarovoff discovers that Sayler is charging 50% rather than 25% for his services. The last postcard dated 27/9/23 from Yarovoff to Sayler tells him he is traveling and to send the outstanding funds of $200 to one of his friends in New York.It is unlikely that sum was ever sent. Fikentscher, Leipzig 1921" in Goldprägung. - "Warum handgebunden?

Jacksonville, Fl., 1921. Old folds. Tears (mostly along folds and in the black background) expertly repaired. Backed on linen. In very good condition. A large, striking three-sheet stone-lithographed poster advertising the Norman Film Studios production of THE BULL-DOGGER, a western starring famed black cowboy Bill Pickett and an all-black cast. The center of the poster is dominated by a nearly full-length image of Pickett standing before a bar in a saloon, facing the viewer sideways and with his six-gun drawn. His image is flanked by portraits of the film's other two stars, Anita Bush and comedian Bennie Turpin, whose name and cross- eyed visage was undoubtedly meant to invoke the popular white comedian, Ben Turpin. The lower half of the poster features an oval illustration of Pickett performing a feat for which he was famous: wrestling a bull to the ground by its horns (i.e. "bull-dogging"). The text promises "death defying feats of courage and skill! Thrills! Laughs Too!" Pickett is promoted on the poster as the "world's colored champion." The poster was created by the Ritchey Lithographic Corporation of New York. Norman Studios, founded in Jacksonville, Florida by the white producer and director, Richard E. Norman, was one of the most prominent studios making so-called "race films" during the 1920s. Melodramas, westerns, and action-adventure films were all produced by the studio. THE BULL-DOGGER was their most famous western, and its star, Bill Pickett, was renowned as a cowboy before he even stepped before the cameras. Born in Travis County, Texas in 1870 of an ex-slave father, Pickett worked as a cowboy from an early age, gaining notoriety for developing a method of bull-dogging that involved him wrestling a bull to the ground by its horns - an act featured in the film and on the poster. He later joined the travelling 101 Wild West Show, and appeared in a second western for Norman Studios, called THE CRIMSON SKULL, in 1922. A great, large poster for a western "race film.

        The Chinese Drama

Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, Limited,, 1921. Quarto. Original orange silk wrappers stitched as issued, paper label on front cover, marbled paper flap-case with silk ties intact. 6 tipped-in colour plates by C. F. Winzer. spine of case toned, endpapers a little foxed. An exceptional copy. First edition, first impression, uncommon: Copac records just 5 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, SOAS, Durham, National Library of Scotland, St Andrews). A most attractively produced book by the colonial administrator and Sinologist Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston (1874-1938), tutor and adviser to the last Emperor of China. "In Beijing, Johnston played out his affectations and passions on a larger stage than was possible in backwoods Weihaiwei. He became actively involved in the small local circle of foreign Sinologists, and met not only Chinese scholars of the old school - such as his fellow tutors - but contemporary writers and thinkers in one of the most turbulent periods of modern Chinese cultural history. He also deepened his reputation as a serious scholar of Chinese, publishing The Chinese Drama (1921), and articles on cultural and contemporary topics" (ODNB). With an interesting provenance: from the library of the amateur magician and collector Edwin A. Dearn (1892-1980), with his bookplate (designed by himself). After becoming interested in magic in 1913, Dearn spent a number of years in China travelling through the Shanghai district and performing magic, ventriloquism, and impersonations in theatres, halls, and homes.

Adventures in the Arts. Informal Chapters on Painters Vaudeville and Poets. [Introduction by Waldo Frank]

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1921. First edition. xviii, 254 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth. Spine gilt lettering dulled, in printed dust-jacket (spine browned, chipping and closed tears to extremities). First edition. xviii, 254 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed to Alfred Stieglitz. THE DEDICATION COPY OF HARTLEY'S FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED BY MARSDEN HARTLEY ON THE DEDICATION PAGE TO ALFRED STIEGLITZ: "My dear Stieglitz, This is the book you saved from the chaos of a grim period. I hope it proved worth the trouble. I marvel that your faith abounds with such vitality. I take courage myself from your example. Devotedly, Marsden Hartley." On the facing page Stieglitz has written the date and location of the inscription in pencil, "April 14 - 1924. 60 E. 65 St." An association of extreme importance - Stieglitz was the first established artist or gallery owner to recognize and promote Hartley's talent. He mounted Hartley's first solo show at his 291 gallery in May of 1909 at a time when Hartley was a virtual unknown in the art world. "Poor and lonely, Hartley was moved by Stieglitz's tangible demonstration of faith in him and his art. At 291 he discovered the spiritual home he had long been seeking, and in Stieglitz he found a mentor who genuinely cared about his work and who was willing to nurture his creative development" (Homer, p. 153). Stieglitz would show Hartley's work five more times at 291 as well as at the Anderson Galleries, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. He helped finance Hartley's first trip to Europe in 1912; the direct exposure to the European avant-garde was a major impact in the development of Hartley's art. Hartley handed over power of attorney to Stieglitz during his time abroad, and it was Stieglitz who signed the agreement with Boni and Liveright for publication of Adventures in the Arts in 1921. Cf.

Buchausgabe angeboten. Reihe: Die Malerbücher (ohne Nummer). 12 Lithographien auf genarbten Werkdruckpapier. Im Stein rechts oder links monogrammiert: OK. Format: 28,7 x 24,5 cm. Die Übertragung des Textes auf den Stein: Emil Richard Weiß (Grafiker).         14 Autograph Letters Signed and one Typed Letter Signed. Correspondence between Yarovoff and Oliver Sayler

Moscow: Nikolai Yarovoff, 1921-23. 14 Autograph Letters Signed and one Typed Letter Signed, approx. Yarovoff, a photographer (best known for his photograph of Anna Pavlova with her dog), an artist and a critic, had known Sayler from his travels round Russia in 1918-19, and indeed Sayler acknowledges Yarovoff in his book Russian Theater [1922]. The last postcard dated 27/9/23 from Yarovoff to Sayler tells him he is traveling and to send the outstanding funds of $200 to one of his friends in New York. It is unlikely that sum was ever sent.
