Correctness of my chosen line of conduct was approved by Kraiekonomsovet [Regional Economic Council] of the South East and VSNKh [Supreme Soviet of the National Economy]. Nevertheless, due to your promise to transfer me to work in Tiflis, and as Azerbaijan is very [.] and I have to spend a lot of time and energy on petty matters, I ask you to write a few words about me in the Caucasus Bureau with a view to use me and my staff in Tiflis, with the task of all the Caucasus. The reverse bears an autograph answer signed from Stalin: "Comrade Merziev! I consider the transfer to Tiflis inadvisable due to a preconception about you spread by Azerbaijanis. I gladly agree with the transfer to Moscow. If you don't mind, go straight to Moscow. I will be there on August 12-15. / Best regards, / J.       [Seneca Falls], 1921. Tied cord-bound black cloth boards, stiff tan leaves. Light general wear to boards; cord broken after middle hole of binding, leaving lower hole of binding unbound throughout; light edgewear or corner creasing to some photos; occasional minor soiling from handling; pencilled notations to reverse of some photos. VG condition overall.. 27 leaves (6 blank) containing 40 photos held in place at the corners using neatly-cut slots in the leaves, plus 10 laid in photos (several being underdeveloped duplicates of those in the album proper); a separate envelope contains six small photos and their corresponding negatives, as well as an RPPC. Total of 56 b/w silver gelatin photographs, many noting in caption and/ or on the reverse the construction project involved, plus six negatives (3-3/4" x 2-3/8") and one RPPC (3-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Five photos are of numbered quadrants of a map, "Proposed Branch of the Barge Canal from Seneca River to Auburn"; one is a photo of a panoramic illustration of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. The remainder depict construction scenes: of these, 40 are ~ 6" x 8"; four are ~4-1/4" x 3-1/4"; and six are 3-3/4" x 2-3/8". 10-1/2" x 11-1/2" A photo album documenting construction projects in and around Seneca Falls related to the New York State Barge Canal system, from the building of the Bonta Bridge in 1912 to the excavation and fill of Dam No. 2 on the completed Cayuga-Seneca Canal, linking Seneca Lake to the Erie Canal, in 1921. The NY State Barge Canal, now know as the New York State Canal System, was authorized by the state legisture in 1903, for the purpose of broadening and unifying the Erie Canal system; it was officially completed in 1918, although repairs and additional construction continued until at least 1921. A board of five civil engineers, known as the Board of Consulting Engineers, was appointed to follow, document, and report canal projects to the State Engineer and Surveyor, providing photographs on a monthly basis for billing verification [New York State Archives, Publication #FA05]. We speculate that this photographer -- possibly one "H. Smith"? -- was working with one of the board members involved. The photos include: two before and after photos of "Bonta's Bridge," constructed in 1912 by M. Fitzgerald; four photos showing construction and problems pertaining to Dam No. 2, including a leak, porous rock, and the "1st Break" in a below-ground tunnel, all dated 1918; 16 photos captioned Contract "W," a 1921 project to address continuing problems at Dam No. 2 and completed that year by contractor James B. Anglim; two undated photos of Contract "P," involving the construction of a concrete cut-off wall under the earth dam at Lock No. 3 by the Foundation Company, 1917 - 18; four photos captioned "Canandaigua 1918"; and additional images of Seneca Falls, Lock No. 2, etc. Barring the presence of occasional photographic elevation levels and initials in neat handwriting (presumably written on the negative before processing) to several of the Contract "W" images, most of the photos are not overly technical, often depicting merely the progress of the project and the workers. The exceptions are the small photos in the envelope, dated 1921, which have more complete captions; one photo of these bears ink notations/ arrows written directly on the image, marking specific distances and elevations. All in all, a wide-ranging overview of the construction of the Cayuga-Seneca branch of the New York State Canal System. Additional sources referenced: "Proceedings of the Canal Board, 1918" and "Proceedings of the Canal Board, 1922."

        Three sketchbooks from c.1921

No publisher - Three sketchbooks containing several hundred sketches and designs, most in pencil, some in pencil and water colour, contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, Includes architectural and engineering studies and a number of ironwork and implement (domestic and agricultural) designs. German-born Weissenborn (1898-1982) spent the first half of his life in Leipzig and the second in London. He was forced to flee Germany in 1939. Unlike many of his fellow refugees, he never lost his sense of German heritage. After conscription into service in World War I he returned home with diaries and sketchbooks and enrolled at the world-famous Leipzig Academy of Graphic and Book Arts, studying art, typography, and printmaking. Artistic success came early, and soon he moved up into the staff, becoming one of the Academy's youngest professors. When the Nazis took power, he lost his post for marrying a Jewish woman and was forced to leave Germany. In Britain, he struggled to find work, and was interned for six months on the Isle of Man in 1940. On release he embarked on a new phase in his career as printmaker, teacher, and publisher. Weissenborn was among a number of German émigré artists who had a unique opportunity to contribute to the British art world through their creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation. Fine in slipcase. A superb archive of sketches. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He was adopted by the Chippewa Indians of the Lake Superior region and given the name Lone Caribou. Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung (A Logical-Philosophical Treatise).

Unesma G.m.b.H., Leipzig 1921 - in Annalen der Naturphilosophie, herausgegeben von (edited by) Wilhelm Ostwald, Vierzehnter Band, Drittes u. Viertes Heft (Fourteenth Volume, Third and Fourth Part). Original printed wrap + [185]-308 + TP for Volume 14 + 1 leaf + Inhalt (Contents) for Volume 14, Octavo. First Edition (Frongia/McGuiness, "Logisch-philosophische Abhandlung", p. 42).The first appearance of Wittgenstein's first work (published in the following year in book form in London with a parallel English translation under the title Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus). Wittgenstein wrote the work while serving in the Austrian army during World War I. He completed the work in August of 1918 and then it stayed with him after his capture and incarceration in an Italian prisoner of war camp at Monte Cassino. From there, a copy was sent to Bertrand Russell via John Maynard Keynes. Wittgenstein and Russell met in Holland in December of 1919 to discuss the work as Wittgenstein was anxious to have it published quickly; Russell undertook to write an introduction but in May of 1920, Wittgenstein wrote to Russell saying that the introduction contained many misunderstandings and he could not let it be printed with his book. The work was then rejected by the publisher with whom Wittgenstein had been negotiating and, in July 1920, he wrote to Russell saying that he would take no further steps to have it published and that Russell could do with it as he wished. The German text was published in 1921 in this publication and then in 1922 with the accompanying English translation in book form. Both publications carried Russell's introduction - here in German and in English in the book. The Tractatus was published here with Russell's "Introduction" - indeed it was the "Introduction" by the famous philosopher that secured the publication of the work in the first place. When Wittgenstein finally saw the Annalen (it took him some time to locate a copy he had not been sent one) he was appalled by the huge number of typographical errors. so horrified in fact, that he wrote a friend saying he regarded it as a "pirated edition" (Monk p. 204). Nonetheless, this is the true first publication of this most important work of 20th Century philosophy. "The book deals with the problems of philosophy and shows that the method of formulating these problems rests on the misunderstanding of the logic of the language. Its whole meaning could be summed up somewhat as follows: What can be said at all can be said clearly; and whereof on cannot speak thereof on must be silent." (from the Preface of the 1922 edition). Original printed orange wraps. An untrimmed copy. There is just a bit of soiling to the outer edge of the front cover. The spine has a very small chip at the top. Comes a modern, folding black cloth case. Otherwise than the noted faults, this is an absolutely fine copy. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Various places, including Princeton, N.J., Chicago, France, Belgium, and Germany, 1921. Six volumes, approximately 7 1/4 x 10 inches, comprising approximately 525 photographs, plus one printed volume. Black cloth boards, photos mounted on black construction paper. Two albums lacking front board, one album with front board detached. Some photo mounts detached and chipped, several heavily so. A few photographs chipped and torn, but generally very good. An extensive collection of over five hundred photographs of the 88th Aero Squadron of the United States First Army during World War I. The Squadron was formed at Fort Logan, Co., in 1917, and was assigned to the I Corps Observation Group when it arrived in France in early 1918. The unit's missions were focused on tactical reconnaissance and flight patrol, often with a brief to conduct aerial photography. The squadron remained on active duty in Europe until the summer of 1919, and was stationed at various points including Issoudun, Ourches, Goussancourt, Souilly, and Trier. This photo archive follows the lives and activities of members of the squadron from the ROTC training of several of its officers at Princeton University through the end of their deployment in 1919. Included are pictures of training in several different locales, both in the United States and Europe, and of everyday life for men in camp. Also present are images of a wide array of World War I- era aircraft such as zeppelins and biplanes, photo documentations of a number of plane crashes, and prints of aerial shots presumably taken during the conduct of reconnaissance missions in France and Germany, as well as a large number of group and individual portraits of the men in the squadron. Most photos are captioned, either in manuscript along the photo edge or in the photo itself. One album contains a small collection of ephemera and printed memorabilia relating to the squadron and to military aviation in general. Also included with the photo albums is a printed tribute to one of the pilots of the squadron, Fletcher Ladd McCordic, who was killed in a plane crash at Trier in February 1919, privately printed in Chicago in 1921, with several plates of other photographs. In addition to eulogizing the pilot, the book also provides some details of the squadron's war record. A remarkable collection of photographs from a critical period in aviation history, when military applications for airplanes were first being explored and put into use.

London: Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1921. Small 8vo, pp. 96. White paper boards, brown cloth spine. Offsetting to endpapers, some offsetting from woodcuts in text, as usual. Covers a little rubbed, rear (white) panel discoloured; small dink to leading edge of front panel, probably caused by an elastic band, which has also caused very light bruising to leading edge of text block. Lower corners bumped. Four full-page woodcuts and woodcut design to front panel, all by Vanessa Bell. First edition. One of 1000 copies. Eight short stories by Woolf, five of them published here for the first time. Leonard Woolf was embarrassed by the poor production values of this hand-set volume: its many misprints were corrected in the American edition, published later the same year. A superior example.
