FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo.(10.2 x 7.8 inches). Illustrated with 96 plates. Publishers original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling to spine. Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector, Paul Cravath. The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen". The drawing shows Cravath, a large man who stood 6ft 4inches, sat posing while a much smaller Orpen, the heat rising from his head and his sleeves rolled up, paints the portrait. The book has the bookplate of the prolific author and traveller Cecil Roberts who has written a note on the blank verso of the frontis piece about Cravath and how he commissioned Orpen to paint his portrait, for a sum of £5000 plus expenses. While staying with Cravath at his Regency Long Island home, where the portrait was painted, Orpen gave Cravath this book as a memento. After Cravath died (in 1940) the house, and presumably some of the contents, was bought by Baron Eugene de Rothschild (in 1942) and Roberts notes that he was often his guest there. He doesn't explain how the book came to be his. There is one more note from Roberts, under the portrait of Lord Riddell (plate XLIX) mentioning his being at a press dinner given for him in 1919. Aside from being third in charge, and legal advisor, of the American War Mission during the Inter-allied War Conference of 1917, the first American mission to a European council in history, Paul Cravath is mainly known for his "Cravath System" which transformed the way law firms work and is still in use today. The "Cravath system" included hiring new law school graduates, then training them within the firm as associates, and eventually inviting the best to become partners. Throughout the twentieth century most of the growth of the big law firms relied on this system of recruiting, internal training, and loyalty to the firm. A nice self portrait of the Artist at work, all the better for being within a copy of Orpen's fascinating war memoir.:

With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London & New York: Hodder & Stoughton, [1921]. Edition de Luxe. Limited to 520 copies (this copy being No. 77), numbered and signed by the artist. A fine copy.In his chapter "Rackham's Best Book Illustrations 2," Getttings discusses work found within this book as reflective of the artist's maturity and confidence, Rackham's pictures "tending to be less coloured drawings [and] gradually becoming more and more like paintings" (Gettings, Arthur Rackham, p.139)."The appearance of Eden Phillpotts' A Dish of Apples brought a characteristically appreciative letter from its author to the artist: 'I am immensely pleased at the charm & originality of your most attractive drawings. The humor of them especially drew me.' Rackham was achieving a new harmony of colour, his drawings for A Dish of Apples, to quote an American admirer Martin Birnbaum, being 'light and sparkling with a passionate rose, glowing greens and primrose yellow'' (Hudson, Arthur Rackham His Life and Work, pp. 118-119."Eden Phillpotts (4 November 1862 – 29 December 1960) was an English author, poet and dramatist. He was born in Mount Abu, British India, educated in Plymouth, Devon, and worked as an insurance officer for 10 years before studying for the stage and eventually becoming a writer. He co-wrote two plays with his daughter Adelaide Phillpotts. He was the author of many novels, plays and poems about Dartmoor. His Dartmoor cycle of 18 novels and two volumes of short stories still has many avid readers despite the fact that many titles are out of print.Phillpotts wrote many other books with a Dartmoor setting. He was for many years the President of the Dartmoor Preservation Association and cared passionately about the conservation of Dartmoor. One of his novels, Widecombe Fair, inspired by an annual fair at the village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor, provided the scenario for his comic play The Farmer's Wife. It went on to become a silent movie of the same name, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and filmed in 1927. The cast included Jameson Thomas, Lillian Hall-Davis, Gordon Harker and Gibb McLaughlin.Latimore and Haskell, p. 54. Riall, p. 144. Gettings, p. 179. Hudson, p. 170.

Illustrated autograph letter signed to Gilbert Seldes.

New York: 317 West 29th Street, 17 December, 1921. Single page (275 x 213 mm), written and drawn on one side only. Creased where folded, chipped at edges, with loss at lower outer corner affecting two words. In this illustrated letter written six weeks before his death, John Butler Yeats (1839?1922), father of the poet W. B. Yeats, writes to Dial editor Gilbert Seldes: "? That hour glass is a great comfort to Father Time & to others. Art with representation, that is, without condition is the latest demands of austere critics. These people, & among them are men of distinction, have never, not for one second known the thrill of a picture. No one knows the thrill except the painter ? & these alas are as ignorant as sheep & quite incapable of expressing their thoughts in grammatical English ? You should have let me speak ? I am disappointed but not surprised. I am only surprised when you admit Anatole France?" (Anatole France's autobiographical fragment La Vie en fleur (Life in Bloom) was published in The Dial, volume 71, July?December 1921.) The sketch takes up the upper half of the page and shows a blind critic, dropping his spectacles, groping his way towards Father Time (a self-portrait of JBY), who is seated on a barrel holding an hour glass in one hand, his scythe in the other, while three figures (representative of artists past and present?) watch on smilingly. Yeats had moved to New York at the age of 69, where he was friendly with members of the Ashcan School of painters and lived chiefly off the generosity of John Quinn. He died in his New York home on 3 February 1922.

1921. Very Good. (CUBA). 168 + ORIGINAL IMAGES FROM HISTORIA GRAFICA DE LA MARITIMA PARRENO. (FROM PHOTO ALBUM OF THE PARRENO DOCK COMPANY). Santiago de Cuba, 1921-41. 168 b/w photographs, four b/w photo postcards and one small negative taken along the waterfront of Santiago de Cuba between 1920 and 1930, and two from 1941. This collection is from the record kept by Cuban businessman Desiderio Parreno, "Custom House Broker, Forwarding Agent, Steamship Agent, Insurance, Real Estate," of the renovation and expansion of his company's docks and warehouses. Documents the need for renovation (photos of cargo - mostly rum and sugar - piled up beside warehouses too small to accommodate it, small docking areas, etc.), the American engineers, the construction, and the further development of the completed facilities. Docks and sheds are named "Desiderio," "Luz," "Isabel," etc. One is named "Don Pancho" to commemorate a long-time employee. Earthquake damage and repair in 1932, dredging of the harbor, the embarcation of a locomotive named "Desiderio," acquisition of a crane, installation of telephones and other improvements are shown. Includes four copies of a staff photo with lists of names. An interesting document of Cuban commercialism before the Revolution, in mostly very good condition. Many images are captioned on the reverse with typing (visible in image) or pencil, and some are marked in pencil on the image itself. Sizes vary; four are 4 x 12 inches; the majority are about 3 x 5 inches, some smaller, with 39 being 5 x 7 inches, 11 being 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, and the large torn group photo is 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.

1921 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

Hi, This lot is a 1921 Original Hardback Wisden in Excellent Condition, it is one of the nicest 1921s I have ever seen. This Wisden is a very nice book, great gilt and boards and very clean inside with strong original hinges, internally a very nice book with excellent photoplate. Only downside, if being picky is a small knock to the bottom right of the front board but a very nice book indeed and a very hard year to find in hardback.

This First Annual Report is an important landmark in the history of modern art in the United States. In the publisher's pink paper-covered boards with pastedown title. Discreet patch to the spine. Previous owner name to the endpaper.

[in 1875] he entered the Royal Academy Schools to study painting. He made long painting expeditions, to Spain in 1876 and France in 1878, and in 1879?80 spent eight months in Tunis, painting and contributing illustrated articles to The Globe and The Graphic" (ODNB). Both men grew up in Kennington, south London.

        Die schlimme Botschaft. Zwanzig Szenen.

Rowohlt, Berlin 1921 - 65 S., 1 Blatt. Orig.-Broschur. HOWARD PYLE'S BOOK OF PIRATES; Fiction, Fact and Fancy concerning the Buccaneers & Marooners of the Spanish Main, compiled by Merle Johnson

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1921. First edition, ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES ON VELLUM STOCK, the first printing from new plates, this being copy number 8 SIGNED by the compiler, Merle Johnson. This copy once belonging to Uniontown, PA. banker J. V. Thompson who made a fortune in coal and built the 11-story First National Bank Building in downtown Uniontown. Profusely illustrated by Howard Pyle, the illustration include 36 tipped-in plates, of which 12 are in stunning color, 2 additional tipped in colour illustrations within the text and many other wonderful illustrations and decorative initials throughout the text. Folio, publisher's deluxe binding of gray boards backed in cream buckram, the front cover decoratively lettered in dark gray and with a colourplate pastedown of Pyle's "Captain Keitt" within a dark gray border, the spine decoratively lettered in gilt, pictorial front free-fly, edges untrimmed. xviii, 247 pp. A fine copy of this rare issue of Pyle's classic. The Japan vellum stock mellowed just a hint as is normal and occasionally with a whisper of offsetting from the plates, all of which are very fine and bright, the boards and white buckram binding very fine as well and beautifully preserved. A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS RAREST ISSUE OF THE ICONIC WORK ON PIRATES, ONE OF THE GREAT ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE ERA. "Why is it that the pirate has, and always has had, a certain lurid glamour of the heroical enveloping him round about? Is there, deep under the accumulated debris of culture, a hidden groundwork of the old-time savage? Is there even in these well-regulated times an unsubdued nature in the respectable mental household of every one of us that still kicks against the pricks of law and order? To make my meaning more clear, would not every boy, for instance—that is, every boy of any account—rather be a pirate captain than a Member of Parliament?" (- from the Introduction).

Funfzig Zeichnungen; Pastelle und Aquarelle Aus Dem Besitz Der Nationalgalerie.

Berlin - Julius Bard, 1921 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. 50 pastels and watercolours by the German artist Adolph Menzel, printed in Berlin under the Weimar Republic. Adolph Menzel was one of the most popular and significant 19th century German artists. His work was mostly produced and exhibited in Germany, and was there acquired quickly by national galleries. This in part accounts for his prominence and popularity within Germany. By the early 20th century he held a significant place within German culture. This book was produced in 1921, when the young Weimar Republic was about to enter a period of damaging hyperinflation, and faced many other threats to its stability besides. Moreover, the identity crisis in Germany following her defeat in the first world war was profound. One can see this work in that context, representing abeautiful artisticrelic of Germany's cultural florescence in the previous century. This is number 266 of 400 copies numbered by hand. Collated: completeCondition: In quarter vellum with paper covered boards. Externally sound with a little wear to the extremities and some marking to the spine. Internally clean and bright and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
