POE, Edgar Allan, [CLARKE, Harry, illustrator].
London and New York: George Harrap 1919. [Strange Tales] FIRST CLARKE EDITION, printed in Great Britain by the Complete Press. Quarto (28 x 21cm), pp.384. With 24 full-page plates, numerous illustrations within the text. Publisher's limp brown suede, yapp edges, lettered in gilt to spine, blocked in blind to upper, grey endpapers. with inset illustration laid down to front cover, top edge coloured black, others untrimmed. Contents fine. Fragile binding shown some wear; joints rubbed/cracked, oversize edges chipped. Generally a very good copy of a most unusual variant publisher binding; this is the first such copy we have handled - the standard UK first was issued in green cloth hardcovers. Scarce thus. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly wierd tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'.

The author's first appointment in Arabia was as Resident at Aden in 1867; he was later made Agent and Consul at Muscat before being promoted Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel". The book remains an authority on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interested in the Arabian Gulf. An very uncommon and desirable work. Rare. There are numerous articles on local politics, including a scathing attack on the organisers of an annual elephant kraal, who had failed to remunerate the poverty-stricken farmers who they employed for several weeks in 1920. The four photographic plates are by W.E. Bastian & Co. of Colombo. They depict E.B. Denham, Director of Education; Sir Graeme Thomson, Colonial Secretary; Walter Dias Bandaranayake, acting Maha Mu … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUTTNER, Erich (Artist). GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von.
With 53 original drawings by Erich Buttner.BUTTNER, Erich (Artist). GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von. Die [anderen unbekannten] Venezianischen Epigrammen. [Hannover: Banas & Dette], [1919.]2 vols, 8vo., original painted cloth-backed publisher's boards, lettered in pen to spines; decorative end papers; volume I with 53 original colour illustratons; pp. vol I 57, [ii], vol II [ii], 57, [i]; both boards a little rubbed and faded, some loss to the spine of vol. II. Internally near-fine, with the odd spot. Limited edition (500 copies printed, this being no. 3), designed by Leopold Fuchs, after which the types were destroyed. The illustrations contained within this copy are finished to varying degrees. Many of them are erotic, one below each epigram, by the Expressionist artist Erich Büttner, who has also removed the title-page (noting on the stub: 'Was einst der Herr von Goethe bewitzelt hat nun ein Maler ausgekritzelt', quasi 'What once Goethe poked fun at a painter has now scribbled out'), decorated the endpapers and painted over the covers. A pencil note, by Büttner, below the colophon reveals that this copy was made as a Christmas present for the bibliophile Emil Tuchmann in 1927.Büttner (1889-1936) was a member of the Berlin Secession, producing portraits of fellow artists George Grosz, Lovis Corinth, Arno Holz, and Heinrich Zille. He also designed book plates, notably Albert Einstein's in 1917.Rodenberg, Deutsche Pressen, p. 408 (the first of Banas & Dette's 'Hölderlin-Drucke', 1919-22).#2075408

He left medical school and proceeded to work at a clinic, using the methods he had developed, to treat patients for free. Many patients wished to be taught by him and so Dr. Oakley Smith founded the Chicago School of Naprapathy. Through extensive research, Dr. Smith discovered that damaged connective tissues would create scar-like condition that aggravated nerves. Thus he created t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Dickens
1919. For sale is a fine and rare second issue of the first edition of the original parts of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens. Published London: Chapman and Hall, 193, Piccadilly; And At The Office Of All The Year Round, 11, Wellington Street, North. MDCCCLIX. A full suite of 16 illustrations by H.K. Browne. Tall 8vo. Beautifully bound in very fine red morocco over marbled boards, by the renowned bindery Sangorski and Surcliffe. Bands to the spine, in gilt, and the title and author's name in gilt. The date in gilt to the foot, although this is misnumbered 1919 (although it is perhaps the date in which it was bound). Original marbled endpapers and gilt page edges. Externally it remains in really very pleasing order; the morocco is largely fresh and the gilt crisp and bright, and the boards also. Occasional trivial extraneous rubbing, but this does not hinder its handsome finish. Internally, this example is without doubt one of the cleanest examples of this title we have handled; only a tiny amount of light spotting to a few text leaves. The vignette and frontispiece have spotting, as is predictable. The impressions to the plates are extraordinarily bright and bold - making them a very early, and important, set in the print run of the plates. Overall, this is an opportunity not to be missed. It is one of the hardest-to-find Dickens first editions, unrestored, and bound in a wonderful binding. It will grace any collection, and could not come more highly recommended. Morley, Christopher
Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City, N.Y, 1919. This signed book is a solid "good" with some rub to bottom page edges. NO dust jacket. Despite the absence of any "first edition" statement, this is either the first or second state of the first edition of this mystery set in a charmingly smoke-filled Brooklyn bookshop near the end of the First World War -- which tale may or may not be a "bibliomystery." Title page and copyright page both dated 1919. Page 76 is not numbered. The type of the name "Burroughs" in the final line of page 76 is solid, not broken. The first line of page 100 reads "boat on the Sty," not "Styx." Dedication is to "The Booksellers," plural. Author Morley has signed the blank FFE to J.D. Hutchinson in fountain pen in his distinctive hand, dating BOTH 1919 and "November 4, 1926," inscribing: "and signed for her a long time -- oh, more than seven years -- later, by Christopher Morley." Morley, a Sherlock Holmes scholar who also helped found the Baker Street Irregulars, was one of the first judges of the Book-of-the-Month Club, continuing in that role till at least 1950. 289 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
