        Bay: A Book of Poems

Westminster: The Beaumont Press 1919 - Illustrated with hand colored woodcuts by Anne Estelle Rice. First edition, limited issue of 200 numbered copies, this being one of 50 copies printed on cartridge paper. Publisher's green cloth and yellow patterned boards, lettered in gilt. About fine, corners very lightly bumped, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, fresh interior. A beautiful copy. Roberts A12.b. An exceedingly rare publication, Bay was first published in several short print runs. This first edition is one of 200 copies, and only 50 copies, like this copy, are printed on cartridge paper with hand colored illustrations. According to the publisher, roughly 25 of the 50 cartridge paper copies were not sold due to an accident, lowering the total number of obtainable copies of Bay to 175 (63 of which are housed in institutional libraries' special collections) and making these copies the scarcest of the three variants. The remaining 150 copies are comprised of 120 copies printed on handmade paper (A12.a) and 30 printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the author and illustrator (A12.c). Bay is a collection of eighteen of Lawrence's poems, including "The Little Town at Evening," "After the Opera," "Bombardment," "Bread Upon the Waters," "Tommies in the Train," "War-Baby," and "Nostalgia," among others. As Roberts explains in his bibliography, these poems "comprise the greater part of Lawrence's literary reaction to the war." Notably, Bay was the first of Lawrence's books to be "issued in an expensive format from a private press," a practice he would continue with many of his subsequent works.         Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Their Adventures Wonderful

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, circa 1919. First edition (second printing ?) in near fine original dust jacket. An early imprint of May Gibbs' first full length book, identifiable by an illustration for "The Hat Shop" which appears opposite page 2. On publication, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie became an immediate success and is an Australian children's classic which has virtually never been out of print. May Gibbs' characters have become national symbols of Australia: Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, Little Ragged Blossom and Bib and Bub, have all for generations filled the hearts of young readers with fear and excitement, and made the Australian bush a place of exceptional interest. May Gibbs perhaps more than any other Australian children's book author has influenced the way we look at our environment. In 1920 a review of this, her first publication states "Miss Gibbs is a naturalist of class. She knows every leaf and twig of the Australian bush and judging from her knowledge of sea cornets, anchovies, anemones and the like, she would seem to have spent at least half her life down in the mysterious deep..." Quarto, original papered boards with colour pictorial onlay, colour frontispiece and sepia plates; the dust-jacket is thumbed and the rear panel is creased. A pleasing, near fine copy in a near fine dust-jacket.

        [Photo Album]: Michigan Family 1917-1970

Michigan. 1919. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 7" x 10". String-tied red leatherette album. Contains 211 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs as well as some color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2.5" and 4" x 6", with captions. Very good album with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album compiled by Michigan family depicting their family history beginning with Edna Lang and Lee Jurzek in 1917. The album appears to have been compiled by a grandchild in the 1970s and follows the Lang-Jurzek family from 1917 until 1971. The first page is captioned "government assignment in World War I" and shows the headquarters of the aviation department of the American Expeditionary Forces as well as a man posed by a plane and a view from a ship. The next page is captioned "L.J. Jurzek on assignment in Paris, France World War I" and shows men in an office huddled around piles of books and paper. Following this is a section entitled "Edna Lang and Lee Jurzek courtship 1918" and shows the young couple and their friends swimming, hiking, and going to parties. They are seen visiting family between 1919 and 1920 including Edna's father Jacob Lang and her stepmother Minnie Lang. Shortly after Edna and Lee moved into their own home in Ferndale, Michigan with their 16 -month-old daughter, Marjorie and four-month-old daughter Loretta. Later they have a son named Richard and the two children are photographed around their family homes and on visits around Michigan. Photos from a 1930 fishing trip are seen here with images of Lee holding his catch and men on a small boat. The family visited Washington DC and is photographed by government buildings and in Arlington Cemetery. The 1930s see the children growing up and more family parties with many picnics and outdoor summer get-togethers. One section of photos shows Lee's brother, Julian and his daughter June Pike who was the Tournament of Roses Queen and is photographed on her float. The album jumps forward to 1958 and follows Marjorie, referred to as Marge, and her husband Dean Lenheiser with their children. Marge and Dean took a trip to Hawaii in 1966 and are photographed at a luau and on the beach. Their family is photographed at a father's day picnic, swimming, and spending time at their Michigan home. One section shows color photographs of the Lenheisers and their friends vacationing on Lake Erie. Following these are photos of Marge, her mother Edna, and her son Reese posed around their family home. The final page is from a trip to Mexico City in 1971.An interesting collection following generations of a Michigan family. .

        Bay: A Book of Poems

Westminster: The Beaumont Press, 1919 Illustrated with hand colored woodcuts by Anne Estelle Rice. As Roberts explains in his bibliography, these poems "comprise the greater part of Lawrence's literary reaction to the war." Notably, Bay was the first of Lawrence's books to be "issued in an expensive format from a private press," a practice he would continue with many of his subsequent works.. Illus. by Rice, Anne Estelle. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine.
