        Divisions Of The Evidence

First Edition. Quarto. This is an expandable promotional folder put out by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for their salesmen in 1919. The pages are fastened into the three part folder with four brass brads designed to be expandable with new material as it comes out. The page size is 12 x 15 inches (30.48 x 38.10 cm). Most pages fold out to double size. For this description a fold out page will be considered four pages. There are 156 pages in all. The title page divides the topics into four sections on hauling: 1). City, 2). InterCity, 3). Farm, and 4). Long Distance. The twelve tab dividers within the work additionally discuss traction, cusioning, increased earning power and general economy. The text is profusely illustrated with photographs. A few pages have mild creases and one brass brad is missing. The corners are slightly worn, but the cover is still bright and the ties are still intact. This edition is numbered, so the quantities were limited. Book condition: Very Good

Sindbad le Marin (Sinbad the Sailor) et d'Autres Contes des Mille et Une Nuits

Paris: H. Piazza, (1919). Quarto. 148pp., + (27)ff. plates. French edition. One of 1,500 copies. The twenty-seven color plates by Edmund Dulac are tipped-in with tissue guards. Floral and foliate borders in yellow surround the text and plates, referencing Eastern illuminated manuscripts. According to White, the "bright, enamel-like" colors of Persian miniatures influenced Dulac's color palette for this book, which includes bold tangerine and carmine red. Many of Dulac's illustrations also have a rich, Far-Eastern sensibility: the plates for the story of Aladdin evoke Chinese and Japanese brush paintings. This handsome edition contains four more plates than the English edition. Slightest chipping to spine ends, else a very fine copy in the original blue printed wrappers.

Lovely formal portraits, one of the Roosevelt family before FDR contracted polio, and another of just Eleanor

(1)Photograph, black white, 10.5" x 13.5 overall, image 7" x 8.75". Taken in Washington, D.C., on June 12, 1919, the Roosevelt family is looking through a scrapbook. Pictured are: Franklin, wife Eleanor, and mother Sara seated on a sofa. Franklin, Jr. (born 1914) is seated on his father's lap while John (born 1916) is on his grandmother's lap, the only one looking at the photographer. Standing behind them are Anna (born 1906), Elliott (born 1910), and James (born 1907). It was taken while FDR was serving as Pres. Woodrow Wilson's Assistant Secretary of the Navy, five months after Eleanor's uncle, Theodore Roosevelt, died. A year later, at the 1920 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, Franklin D. Roosevelt received his party's nomination for Vice President because of his successful record in naval affairs during the World War, his popularity, and his family name. While vacationing at Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio. (2) Early Photograph, sepia, 9" x 12.25" (blank margins trimmed) overall, image 7.5" x 10". Signed in pencil at lower right of image "Kazanjian/N.Y." Aram Kazanjian was an Armenian refugee from the Turkish massacres of 1905-1906 who became a successful painter and photographer in Boston and New York. His daughter, Arlene Francis Kazanjian, born in Boston in 1907, dropped her family name and became a well-known actress in films and on radio, Broadway, and television. Ironically, on her first show on "What's My Line?" on February 16, 1950, Arlene Francis was the panelist who correctly identified the night's mystery guest, Elliott Roosevelt, son of Eleanor and Franklin, and you know Eleanor was watching. Fine condition.
