A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes

Washington, DC: The Smithsonian Institution, 1919 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, vol. 71, number 2. 4to (228x146 mm). [4], 69 pp., including separate title, printed self-wrapper, 10 pages of photographs on 5 leaves; some marginal thumbing and soiling, little browning. Dark-green buckram, gold-stamped title label on spine (extemities rubbed, edges bumped), bound with other publications of vol. 71, nos. 1 and 2. Provenance: Gerald F. Fitzgerald; New York University, General library (old bookplate to inner cover, small ink stamp to general title of vol. 71). A good ex-library copy, without library stamps to Goddard's publication. ----

DSB V, 433; Honeyman sale 1521; Van Riper, Rockets and Missiles, 29. - First edition. "Goddard published his first major work in 1919. A sixty-nine-page treatise titled 'On a Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes.' It was a serious technical study of how two-stage, solid-propellant rockets could be used to lift scientific instruments high into Earth's atmosphere, and ended with brief discussions of liquid-propellant rockets and the possibility of sending a rocket to the moon. Funded and published by the Smithsonian Institution, Goddard's pamphlet-sized work oozed respectability. The argument was dense, the writing dry, and the pages studded with equations and tables of data. It was, in other words, a model of respectable scientific writing, and it addressed an important scientific problem: how to gather atmospheric data from altitudes higher than the seven miles balloons could reach" (Van Riper)..

A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes

Washington: The Smithsonian Institution. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Robert Goddard's famous explanation of the powerful potential of rocketry and, specifically, on the possibility of projecting an object beyond the atmosphere of the Earth. "Goddard, a physics professor at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., had published an arid little paper on an outrageous topic, rocket travel. Unlike most of his colleagues, Goddard believed rocketry was a viable technology, and his paper, primly titled "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes," was designed to prove it. For the lay reader, there wasn't much in the writing to excite interest, but at the end, the buttoned-up professor unbuttoned a bit. If you used his technology to build a rocket big enough, he argued, and if you primed it with fuel that was powerful enough, you just might be able to reach the moon with it." (Time 100). At the time of publication, Goddard was widely ridiculed as a hopeless dreamer; his work would, of course, later be recognized as providing the foundation for the modern space age. With 25 photographic plates on 10 pages. IN: Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, Vol. 71, No. 2 (pp. 1-69, plus 10 pages of plates). Washington: The Smithsonian Institution, 1919. Octavo, contemporary drab boards with volume number and call number in ink on spine. Interior fine. Rare.

A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes

Washington: The Smithsonian Institution, 1919. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Ex-Library. [4], 69, [1-blank], [10-plates containing 25 figures] pages. Extracted from Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections Vol. 71, and nicely rebound with simple leather spine and reproduced title page printed on front cover. Ciancone in his Literary Legacy of the Space Race (#84) notes this is the 'First monograph in English on the use of rockets for space travel. In the final section, Goddard suggested using a small portion of flash powder in a rocket directed at the moon in an attempt to visually verify a successful impact. Despite the scientific nature of the bulk of the monograph, this brief proposal captured the attention of the press, which derided Goddard's work with great skepticism and provided little comfort to the reserved Goddard." Ciancone also notes but we have been unable to verify that this work was actually published in 1920 'despite stated publication date of 1919.'.

        MARGARET PROTESTS

London: Erskin Macdonald Ltd 1919 - First edition, first printing. Original black boards with red lettering to front panel and spine in dustwrapper. A VERY GOOD+ copy, slightly bumped to head and tail of spine and with scattered light foxing to endpapers in a VERY GOOD edge-worn but complete dustwrapper with a few small chips at the folds and spine tips and a long closed tear between the front fold and flap. The spine and front panel are evenly browned. A nice example of this rare feminist novel, especially so in its original dustwrapper. The first novel by Margaret Leonora Eyles, a feminist and political activist of her day. Eyles wrote for the TLS, edited the women’s page in The Miner and had a column in the infant Woman’s Own magazine, in which she established her reputation for a sympathetic understanding of the women’s issues of the day, writing as an ‘agony aunt’ from the first issue in 1932. Orphaned in childhood and abandoned by her first husband with three children at twenty-four, Eyles experienced first-hand the contemporary hardships of impoverished mothers and wives which would become the central concern of her novels. ‘Margaret Protests’, a bestseller on its publication, is ‘a pitiful ruthless exposure of poverty, inefficient education and modern marriage conditions.’ The novel is also heavily influenced by the writings of Marie Stopes, who published ‘Married Love’ and ‘Wise Parenthood’ the previous year. Eyles tackles themes of abortion and birth control and explores family relationships and education. A controversial and popular author and journalist in her day, Eyles takes a significant place in the history of feminism in literature. Memorandum of the Don Republic Delegation [at the Paris Peace Conference, 1919]

Paris, 1919. First Edition. Quarto (31cm). Sewn pamphlet; self-wraps; 8pp. Partial split to bound edge; minor soil and foxing; complete and Good. Text in English.& & A stirring plea for sovereign recognition, dated May 15, 1919, written by the President of the Don Cossack Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference. & & In 1917, following the Russian Revolution, the Don Cossacks - for hundreds of years an autonomous entity within the borders of Imperial Russia - had been the first nation to declare open war against the Bolsheviks. By 1918, the Cossacks declared the complete independence of the Republic of the Don, and Cossack troops formed the effective mass of the anti-Bolshevik White Army. The Don Delegation's plea for recognition was essentially ignored by the major powers at the Paris Peace Conference, who had made the deliberate decision to let matters in Russia play out on their own. Without international support, the White Army and the Don Republic collapsed completely by the end of 1919, effectively putting an end to the anti-Bolshevik resistance within Russia. The Soviet process of "de-cossackization" began immediately and continued through the Stalin purges of the 1930s, with the result that the ethnic Cossack population in Russia was thoroughly decimated, either by disease, famine, or deportation, by the end of the Second World War.& & An important and very scarce survival, presumably one of very few official documents to be issued by this short-lived and now nearly forgotten nation-state. OCLC notes one location only for this English-language edition (BDIC Nanterre, which also owns a French-language edition, as does University of Manchester). No locations found in North America.
