The Riddle of the Ruthvens and Other Studies

Edinburgh - W. Green and Son, 1919. Edinburgh - W. Green and Son, 1919 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. First edition ofthis selection of true crime stories from a criminology obsessive. Appears to be inscribed by the author on the half-title: 'for the Rev. C. J. Butler, with many fond wish, from Will Roughead, Christmas 1944'. With a frontispiece and twelve further plates. Binder's label of M. Salah A'Adami, Baghdad. Bookseller's label to Wildy and Sons, London. William Roughead (18701952) was a well-known Scottish lawyer and amateur criminologist, as well as an editor and essayist on matters criminous. He was an important early practitioner of the modern true crime literary genre. Roughead held the title of Writer to Her Majesty's Signet, roughly equivalent in Scottish law to the position of solicitor. As the years progressed, Roughead practised law less and increasingly plied a trade as an unofficial historian of crime. He marks this transition from the year 1889, when at the age of nineteen, he skipped his apprentice work at the law firm of Maclaren and Traquair to attend the trial of Jessie King, the murderous baby-farmer of Stockbridge (an experience he described in his essay My First Murder: Featuring Jessie King, In Queer Street, 1932). For roughly the next six decades, Roughead attended almost every murder trial of any importance at the High Court of Justiciary. These experiences provided the material he would submit for publication in the Juridical Review, a monthly Scottish legal journal; in later years, he would collect his contributions to the Juridical Review as well as much new material into several anthologies of essays. Condition: Ina half calf binding. Externally sound although rubbed. Front hinge slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean but with light foxing to the pages adjacent to the plates, including title. Blanklabel to front pastedown. Overall: GOOD.

        The Moon and Sixpence

London: William Heinemann, 1919 London: William Heinemann, 1919 First edition, first issue, with four pages of ads. Signed and inscribed by the author to the half-title page: "by W. Somerset Maugham / for Robert Partridge / 24 October 1946". Publisher's olive green cloth, lettered and decorated in black, four pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A near fine copy, with some wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, light toning to pages as usual. Overall, a tight copy of a scarce book, inscribed. Stott A22. The Moon and Sixpence is a novel about the dual blessing and curse of artistic talent, loosely based on the life of French artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), an important Post-Impressionist and leader of the Primitivism movement that championed a return to the pastoral. The plot, narrated in first person and told in episodic form, tells the story of Charles Strickland, a middle-aged London stockbroker with a passionate interest in art. Early on, Strickland abruptly leaves his wife and family to move to Paris and pursue a career in art. Driven by a voracious need to express himself artistically, Strickland lives in poverty and sickness, which he seemingly doesn't mind as long as he continues to create artwork, although his work would not be appreciated until after his death. The novel's final episode places the narrator in Tahiti, where Strickland had been living with a young native woman while continuing to produce art. While there are notable differences between Gauguin and Strickland, The Moon and Sixpence provides a unique glimpse into Gauguin's life and inspirations. On a larger note, it presents the consuming struggle of an artist's passion, and the influence of benevolent and evil forces. As Maugham writes, "the adulation of his admirers is perhaps no less capricious than the disparagement of his detractors; but one thing can never be doubtful, and that is he had genius.". Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        My Man Jeeves

Newnes, 1919. Newnes, 1919. 1st edition, first printing. Hardcover. Considering its age and the fragility of its production, this copy is in very good condition. The original wine-red boards are a little rubbed, the spine slightly faded, the extremities slightly bumped. The pages are free of any foxing, a little tanned as is common, with a small mark on part of the top block; the inner margins of the endpapers are slightly darkened, there is a small bookseller's blindstamp on the fep, but there are no other introduced markings, and Butler & Tanner are the printers, further signifying the true first edition. The great Jeeves makes his first appearance in book form here, in four of the short stories within. A very good copy of a very scarce item - with the added bonus of a Victorian-style Christmas card with Wodehouse's signature on the inside.

Gitanjali and Fruit-Gathering [Signed and with a Autograph Poem Signed]

London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1919. London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1919. Second printing. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, second printing, being the combined issue of Rabindranath's "Gitanjali" and "Fruit-Gathering", with a color frontispiece (with a tissue guard) and seven additional color illustrations scattered in text (for a total of eight color illustrations), and twenty-three black and white illustrations, a sixteen-page introduction by W. B. Yeats, and a two-page catalogue at the volume's rear (gentle pushing and light rubbing at spine ends, modest rubbing to board corners, light discoloration to a couple of places on the front board near to the spine, to the spine panel -- primarily at the head, and to the top of the rear board -- no dust jacket; the note is in Very Good or better condition with age fading an a single vertical fold down the middle), SIGNED BY RABINDRANATH TAGORE on the front free endpaper, TOGETHER WITH AN AUTOGRAPH PRESENTATION NOTE ADDRESSED, WRITTEN, DATED, AND SIGNED BY TAGORE AND QUOTING FROM A POEM IN THE BOOK as follows: "To Flora [underscored by Tagore] on her Nineteenth Birthday. // Mar 10th 1920. [underscored by Tagore] // I have kissed this world with my eyes and / limbs; I have wrapt it within my heart in / numberless folds; I have flooded it's [sic] days and / nights with thoughts till the world and my / life have grown one, - and I love my life / because I love the light of the sky so enwoven / with me. // Tagore. // Page 171. [underscored]". [The quote provided by Tagore is the first verse of an untitled poem from Fruit-Gathering [numbered "LIII"] appearing on page 171 of this book and being quoted with near accuracy, with only one error in punctuation ["it's"] and reading "my eyes and limbs" rather than "my eyes and my limbs" as appears on page 171 of the book. Macmillan first published Tagore's "Gitanjali" 1913 and his "Fruit Gathering" in 1916. The first combined edition was published by Macmillan in 1918, and neither book in English translation corresponds to any of Tagore's works in Bengali. "Gitanjali" was first published in Bengali in 1910, then containing 157 Poems. As first published in English (1912), the work contained 103 Poems, 50 of which were taken from the Bengali edition and 53 of which were gathered from Tagore's other works. "Fruit-Gathering" is in its entirety as gathering of various Tagore poems from other works. Rabindranath Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West". In presenting the Prize to Tagore, Harald Hjärne, Chairman of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy, stated: "In awarding the Nobel Prize in Literature to the Anglo-Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, the Academy has found itself in the happy position of being able to accord this recognition to an author who, in conformity with the express wording of Alfred Nobel's last will and testament, had during the current year, written the finest poems of an idealistic tendency...Tagore's Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912), a collection of religious poems, was the one of his works that especially arrested the attention of the selecting critics." (Tagore was fluent both in Bengali and in English. A close friend of Gandhi's -- each man admired the other greatly -- he also was knighted by the British in 1915, and, though he resisted the use of titles and distinguishing classifications, he is named as "Sir" Rabindranath Tagore on this book's dust jacket and title page, a designation presumably used by the Publisher to increase sales in class-conscious Britain. (Tagore later resigned his knighthood in protest of British policies in India.) Though he supported Indian independence, he urged the Indian people not to view themselves as victims of the British, seeing instead British rule as a "political symptom of our social disease", urging not outright revolution but rather advising the people to engage in self-help and education that would ultimately produce a capable and independent nation. Interestingly, it was Tagore who popularized "Mahatma" (or "Great Soul") as a description of Gandhi.) Significantly, Tagore was the first non-European to win the Prize. A polymath, he wrote novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, and dramas, as well as over two thousand songs for which he wrote both the lyric and the music. Signed copies of Tagore's works do not by any means abound and personal presentation notes from Tagore are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of a quite scarce book, SIGNED BY RABINDRANATH TAGORE, TOGETHER WITH A PRESENTATION NOTE WRITTEN AND SIGNED BY TAGORE -- wonderfully selected by Tagore for a young lady embarking on her adult life. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE.

Marlborough Square in the Beautiful Wilshire District on the Sixth Street Car Line. Jas. V. Baldwin. 537-38 H.W. Hellman Bldg

Los Angeles.: Jas. V. Baldwin / Tracy E. Shoults Company., No date. Ca. 1919.. Los Angeles.: Jas. V. Baldwin / Tracy E. Shoults Company.. No date. Ca. 1919.. Black and white plat map broadsheet, 17 1/2 x 15 inches, folded to 8 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches. Crayon annotations, very good condition. A particularly interesting plat map of Marlborough Square, indicating as it does that this real estate development between Temple Street (Beverly Blvd) and Rosewood Avenue, with houses fronting on Vine (N. Arden Blvd), El Centro (N. Lucerne Blvd), Larchmont and Gower, was originally in the hands of Jas. V. Baldwin, whose printed name is crossed out in red pencil with the stamp of Tracy E. Shoults & Co. Subdividors (sic) added at left. It is apparent that sold lots are marked in red, the remaining lots priced in pencil (from $1350 to $4000). An article in Motor World of March 21, 1917 discusses "James V. Baldwin's whirlwind campaign with the Saxon [automobile] line in southern California" but notes that he "was and is a Los Angeles real estate man. He still maintains two separate places of business and much of his time is spent at his real estate office although he is at the helm of one of the most successful motor car businesses in California." Tracy E. Shoults is described in J.S. McGroarty's 1921 publication "Los Angeles from the Mountains to the Sea" as instituting "His largest development 1919 when he placed on the market the Windsor Square, the Windsor Heights and the Marlborough Square residential districts in Los Angeles," thus identifying this map as an early piece of merchandising in the selling of these exclusive residential districts. Both developers were obviously hewing to Baldwin's sentiment quoted in the Motor World article: "Lots in the finest tracts are easiest to sell. The finest hotels draw the best business and the finest jewelry stores sell the greatest number of gems." The map was drawn by C. Fiske, Jr. C.E.; an earlier edition of this map with James V. Baldwin as developer is listed in WorldCat (Number: 83982719) but with no libraries listed as holding the item. .

        Kew Gardens. Second edition

Richmond: [Printed by Richard Madley for] The Hogarth Press, , 1919. Richmond: [Printed by Richard Madley for] The Hogarth Press, , 1919. Octavo. Original paper wrappers hand-coloured in blue, dark red and black, white label lettered in black on front cover. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Woodcut frontispiece and tailpiece by Vanessa Bell. Star sticker to upper wrapper. Wrappers rubbed and frayed, closed tear to cover, contents partially disconnected from upper wrapper, some spotting to edge of lower cover. Contents unopened. A very good copy. Vanessa Bell's own copy of the first book she illustrated for the Hogarth Press, with her pencilled ownership signature to the title page. The star sticker on the upper wrapper, which also appears on other volumes from this collection, was likely used to indicate who was to inherit the book. Second edition, published June 1919 in an edition of 500 copies, following the first edition of about 170 copies published the previous month. Kew Gardens was the Woolf's first great success and the first book that Virginia's sister Vanessa illustrated. On June 9, 1919 Virginia recorded in her diary that "Nessa & I quarrelled as nearly as we ever do quarrel now over the get up of Kew Gardens, both type and woodcuts; & she firmly refused to illustrate any more stories of mine under those conditions, & went so far as to doubt the value of the Hogarth Press altogether. An ordinary printer would do better in her opinion. This both stung and chilled me. Not that she was bitter or extreme; its her reason and control that give her blame its severity". Events proved Bell to some extent correct; a glowing review in the Times Literary Supplement on May 29, 1919 led to a flood of orders that the Woolfs could not fulfil on their own, and the second edition was jobbed out to Richard Madley. But the lasting result was a triumph for both Bell and Virginia, as the review described the book as a work of art in whole, making special mention of Bell's woodcut. "But here is 'Kew gardens' – a work of art, made, 'created' as we say, finished, four-square; a thing of original and therefore strange beauty, with it's own 'atmosphere,', it's own vital force… the more one gloats over 'Kew Gardens' the more beauty shines out of it… and the more one likes Mrs. Bell's 'Kew Gardens' woodcuts" (Woolmer p. xxiv).
