La Boite ê Joujoux. Ballet pour Enfants par André Helle. Musique de Claude Debussy

Paris: Durand & Fils, [c. 1919] - First edition of this thoroughly delightful yet fragile book, reproducing the children's ballet which debuted in 1919 with sets and costumes designed by Hellé, the great children's illustrator (Debussy had composed the music in 1913). The story - what else but of love and war? - takes place in a toy-box, toy-boxes being, as Hellé has it "really just like towns in which toys live like people - or maybe towns are really just toy- boxes in which people live like toys . " Hellé's ingenious illustrations have all the irresistible charm of childhood, and the book is a delight. It was issued in two bindings: wrappers, at 12 francs, boards, as here, at 15 france. Both are very scarce (HELLE, ANDRÉ) First edition. 10 x 13 inches. Hand-colored title page + 4 preliminary leaves with hand-colored illustrations, 5 divisional titles hand-lettered and illustrated in color, and 13 full-page color pochoir plates, after Andre Helle. Original cream boards as issued, lettered by hand, in the original glassine. Loose in binding, flyleaves detached and chipping, but the text itself and the boards are very good [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Small Archive]: United Mine Workers of America Commission Signed by John L. Lewis to W.A. "Tony" Boyle, future president of the UMWA and convicted murderer of Joseph Yablonski, with related material

A small archive of documents pertaining to the organized labor career of W.A. Boyle. One of America's great power-brokers during his long life, John L. Lewis became acting president of The United Mine Workers of America in 1919. He finally retired in 1960 and was succeeded by Thomas Anderson, himself quite elderly and in failing health. When Anderson died three years later William Anthony Boyle took over the UMWA. "Tough Tony" Boyle consolidated the powers of the union president and was involved in widespread corruption. In 1969 Pennsylvania union leader Joseph Yablonski created a credible challenge to Boyle but ultimately lost, and was murdered with his wife and daughter a few days after the election. Boyle was convicted of ordering the murder and died in prison in 1985. Hollywood revisited the crime in the 1986 HBO film Act of Vengeance with Wilford Brimley portraying Boyle and Charles Bronson as Yablonski. Further details available upon request. .

        Wineburg, Ohio

New York:: B.W. Huebsch,, 1919. . A Near Fine copy rebound in mustard leather binding with marbled endpapers. This short story cycle is considered one of the seminal high spots of modern American literature. It is structured around the life of protagonist George Willard, from the time he was a child to his growing independence and ultimate abandonment of Winesburg as a young man. It is set in the fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio which is based loosely on the author's childhood memories of Clyde, Ohio. The stories were "...conceived as complementary parts of a whole, centered in the background of a single community." The book consists of twenty-two stories, with the first story, "The Book of the Grotesque", serving as an introduction. Each of the stories shares a specific character's past and present struggle to overcome the loneliness and isolation that seems to permeate the town. Stylistically, because of its emphasis on the psychological insights of characters over plot, and plain-spoken prose, Winesburg, Ohio is known as one of the earliest works of Modernist literature. Winesburg, Ohio has served as a representative early example of the modern short story cycle in American letters. Comparisons between Winesburg, Ohio and Jean Toomer's Cane (1923), Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time (1925), William Faulkner's Go Down Moses (1942), and several of John Steinbeck's works, among others, demonstrate the pervasiveness of the formal innovations made in Anderson's book.& & & .

        "Dagon" In: THE VAGRANT

N.p. [Athol, Massachusetts]: W. Paul Cook,. November 1919 (number 11). original tan wrappers, printed in black.. Text block a bit tanned (as is usually the case), a fine copy. Rare.. (#108477). The first printing of this major early Lovecraft story, which W. Paul Cook considered to be Lovecraft's first mature weird tale (See Cook, In Memoriam Howard Phillips Lovecraft [1942], pp. 60-3). In 1917, prompted by Cook and other amateurs who had been impressed by two youthful efforts, "The Beast in the Cave" (written 1905; published in THE VAGRANT, June 1918) and "The Alchemist" (written 1908; published in THE UNITED AMATEUR, November 1916), Lovecraft wrote "The Tomb" and "Dagon." "Both 'The Tomb' and 'Dagon' are... the nuclei of other and still better tales by Lovecraft: the former is the ultimate origin of 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward' (1927), and the latter was writ large in 'The Call of Cthulhu' (1926) and 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' (1931)." - Joshi, H. P. Lovecraft: A Life, p. 159. Also present is Cook's critical article "Howard P. Lovecraft's Fiction," and the third part of "Twenty Years' Recollections of Amateur Journalism (Written in 1913)" by Arthur Henry Goodenough. Joshi I-B-i-13 and p. 414.

        OEDIPUS

Berlin: [Wilamowitz-Moellendorff], [1919].. Large quarto. Gilt vellum over boards, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Some modest handsoiling to the binding, tasteful collector's bookplate, otherwise very good or better in custom slipcase with labels. First printing in this format, illustrated with seven full-sheet original etchings, plus a title-page vignette and decorative initial, by Sepp Frank. From a total edition of one hundred numbered copies, this is one of ninety on paper, signed by the artist on the colophon. The text is that established by Wilhelm von Kaufmann. A rather early example of Frank's work as a book illustrator, which has been eclipsed somewhat by his fame as a bookplate artist.

A LA SANTE DU CORPS. POEME PAR MAURICE VLAMINCK, DECORE PAR ANDRE DERAIN. Signed

Paris: François Bernouard, 1919 Rare first edition. Thin 4to., unpaginated [24] + printed stiff card covers. 1 of only 104 numbered copies [4 on Japon & 100 on Arches]. This copy lettered "G" & signed by Derain although no lettered copies are indicated which might account for a possible 26 additional copies printed]. Designed with four full page black & white Derain illustrations. A bit of offsetting to the prelims, heavy cover stock mildly aged with light soiling. Very uncommon. Vlaminck's satirical 'poeme' about "life" has 4 chapter headings in French: Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter - Derain's "Fauve" sketches illustrate the chapters & are typical of his heavier lines - bold & thickly rendered. A fine example of Fauvism in spirit & illustration. A movement said to have begun in June 1909 when Vlaminck first met Andre Derain at Chatou resulting in the formation of the school of Chatou & ultimately the birth of Fauve art - joined formatively by the likes of; Matisse, Gaugin, Van Dongen, Camoin, Dufy, Marquet & others. The important collaboration between Derain & de Vlaminck was not a solitary happening as their association & friendship lasted a lifetime resulting in many important works. "Quand c'est le printemps et qu'on n'a pas d'argent ça a moins d'importance qu'a quarante ans On court après la blonde on prend la brun on a vingt ans aux prunes.. 1st Edition.

The Russian Committee for Escaped Military Officers in Rotterdam. 1918-1919.

Rotterdam: 1919 - Landscape quarto. Cord-tied in the original letter-press card wraps. Wraps a little rubbed, soiled and spotted but sound, photographs with some marginal fade or oxidation, but overall very good. 41 mounted original photographs, neat calligraphic captions in Cyrillic. No other copy traced, the letter-press cover-title suggests a published item, the manuscript captioning a very small-scale issue. Fascinating visual record of relief services for Russian officer refugees in Holland. By the end of the First World War thousands of Russian prisoner-of-war escapees and deserters were scattered in cheap lodging-houses throughout Rotterdam and Schiedam, many with very little desire to be repatriated. The images collected here show a well-organized attempt to provide comprehensive assistance for them. Group portraits show two of the committees for the assessment of cases, with a number of individuals identified in the captioning; there are also individual portraits of the head of the committee, the secretary, the heads of the Economic and Accommodation Departments. Other images show the processing of new arrivals, undergoing interview and receiving an issue of civilian clothing; there are views of the boot and clothing workshops, the dentist's surgery, the doctor's office and emergency room, the dining room, temporary church, the classrooms of the secondary school, the blacksmith's shop and the carpentry, electronics and mechanical engineering facilities. An extremely intriguing glimpse into relief efforts in the aftermath of WWI.

        L'ÉVANGILE PAR L'IMAGE

[Paris]: Imprimé pour Charles Meunier, 1919. No. 7 OF 13 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES printed on blue paper WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF THE WOODCUTS AND AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, from a total edition of 165 copies n. Hardcover. 346 x 248 mm (13 5/8 x 9 3/4"). 2 p.l., 57 pp. No. 7 OF 13 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES printed on blue paper WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF THE WOODCUTS AND AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, from a total edition of 165 copies. DISTINCTIVE BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY CHARLES MEUNIER (signed "Ch. Meunier '21" at foot of front panel and stamp-signed "Ch. Meunier 1921" on front turn-in), UPPER COVER WITH LARGE INSET "CUIR CISELÉ" PANEL DEPICTING THE CRUCIFIXION, Christ on the cross enclosed by a broad frame of thorns and lilies, the book's title at the head of the panel and the symbols of the four Evangelists in corner roundels; raised bands, gilt titling, turn-ins framed by multiple gilt rules with cornerpieces representing the Eucharist, marbled silk endleaves, marbled paper flyleaves, all edges gilt. Original printed paper wrappers preserved. In the original (damaged) chemise and housed in a later morocco-backed folding box. WITH 104 WOODCUT PLATES, comprised of 26 images (three with folding panels), all with proofs in three extra states, AND AN ORIGINAL SIGNED WATERCOLOR, all by "Kharis." Text in French and Greek. Monod 4394; Carteret IV, 152. A couple of tissue guards creased, isolated faint foxing, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, quite clean and fresh internally, and the binding entirely unworn. Because of its added illustrated material and its powerful special binding, this is a very desirable copy of the strictly limited version of this production of "The Gospel in Image." According to the limitation page, Meunier executed special "cuir-ciséle" (or "incised leather") bindings for 13 special copies, but sales results recorded in ABPC and Americana Exchange would suggest otherwise: besides the present copy, just two such bindings have been offered for sale during the last six decades (one in 2011 and one in 1969). Like ours, the latter binding was dated 1921, but it had quite a different design, while the former was dated a year later than the present copy. In light of this, one might speculate that, although Meunier was prepared to create as many as 13 special bindings to order, he may have produced significantly fewer on account of disappointing demand. In any case, our binding, which was done at the end of Meunier's stellar career, is fittingly somber in tone. The cuir ciselé panel is unpainted except for some subtle shading that enhances its convincing impression of carved wood. The text here is extracted from the 17th century biblical translation into French of Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (1613-84), a priest of Port-Royal, theologian, and humanist. He is best known for this celebrated translation, the most broadly read French Bible of the 17th and 18th centuries, popularly known as the "Bible de Port-Royal." "Kharis" was the pseudonym of Pal Burger Diether, an artist who shows significant talent here but who seems somehow otherwise to have remained obscure.

        FIRST PLAYS

      - MILNE,A.A. FIRST PLAYS. Lond.: Chatto & Windus 1919. 8vo, cloth. xii, 22p. + ads, label aged else fine (no dw). 1st ed. SIGNED BY MILNE. Contains Wurzel-Flummery, Luck One, The Boy Comes Home, Belinda and the Red Feathers. Milne began his play writing career while stationed on the Isle of Wight doing service during WWI. In the introduction Milne credits the Kaiser with helping his dramatic career. While some officers spent their free time playing bridge or golf, Milne used it to write these plays. "These five plays were written during the years 1916 and 1917. They would hardly have been written had it not been for the war. To his other responsilbilities the Kaiser now adds this volume." In a nice bit of association, it was James Barrie, already established, who helped Milne to produce one of the plays included here, Wurzel Flummery.       Budapest: Ma-Kiadas 1919 - Octavo 24.3 x 16 cm, wrappers, 32pp, 40 plates. Published in the momentous year of 1919 which saw the Hungarian Soviet Republic eruption and demise in less than five months, this is one of the more significant Ma publications under Lajos Kassák at the time and was released shortly before he and most of the Hungarian artists appearing in this book were forced into exile. In addition to surveying the noted movements in the title, Hevesy also includes works of the the Hungarian Activists operating under the banner of Kassák's Ma. Aktivizmus was strongly influenced and drew freely from the three movements under discussion. The activist artists whose works appear here include Janos Mattis-Teutsch (one woodcut), a linocut cover by Sándor Bortnyik and with photo-illustrated works by Bornyik as well. There is also a linocut by Czech Cubist Vincenc Benes which appeared in an early Ma issue, together with reproductions of works by numerous artists of the movements under discussion.
