Sweden's Laureate: Selected Poems of Verner Von Heidenstam [Signed / Ingraverat]

Yale University Press, 1919, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: very good, First editionA Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (some surface rubbing to the boards, rubbing to the board corners, bump and minor wrinkling to the upper leading corner of each board), in a Very Good example of the scarce dust jacket (modest edge wear and a few small edge tears, fold line at the bottom of each panel and the spine tail, tiny closed concertina tear and nearby tiny indent, light sunning to the spine, some foxing), SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM on the title page and ALSO SIGNED BY CLARE BOOTHE LUCE on the front free endpaper. Swedish Poet and Novelist Verner Von Heidenstam, known for the joy of life shown in his prose and poetry, won the 1916 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his significance as the leading representative of a new era in our literature". The leader of his generation of Swedish Poets, and ranked among the masters of Swedish Literature, von Heidenstam regenerated Swedish Poetry, abandoning the then-prevalent realistic school of Swedish Poetry and its gloomy works, and introducing imagination and the value of appreciating beauty for its own sake. Thus, at the ceremony held to present the Prize to von Heidenstam, the noted Swedish critic Sven Söderman stated: "In the constellation of original artists who regenerated Swedish poetry at the end of the last century, Verner von Heidenstam was the most brilliant star. He was the leader of the generation of poets of 1890; he was the first to set forth in theory and also to realize in his works the ideal of new Swedish generations."Söderman also noted that von Heidenstam's first poetic work, "Vallfart och vandringsÃ¥r" (1888) ["Pilgrimage: The Wander Years"], "...marked an epoch in the modern literature of Sweden. In truth it gave the final blow to the realistic school, enemy of all imagination, which was then dominant in Sweden and which since 1880 had darkened literature with its sadness and its gloom. This was the first manifestation of a new poetry in which free individuals, led only by the logic of their imagination, worshipped beauty for its own sake. " (The book herein described includes work from "Vallfart och vandringsÃ¥r" (1888) as well as from "Dikter" (1895) [Poems] and from "Nya Dikter" (1915) [New Poems], presenting approximately one-fourth of the work presented in those three volumes.) The interior of the book is in superior condition with the leaves being quite clean and bright. A number of leaf-pairs remain uncut at the bottom, indicating that the book likely has not been read -- certainly not in its entirety. Having a notable Provenance, this copy belonged to editor, playwright, journalist, ambassador, socialite, and U.S. Congresswoman (representing Connecticut) Clare Boothe Luce and carries her elegant possession signature to the front free endpaper. Signed copies of von Heidenstam's work in any language and in any edition are extraordinarily scarce. In our experience, his signed books are among the scarcest of all those of the Nobel Prize in Literature winners. On our most recent check, the auction records revealed no signed copies of Verner von Heidenstam's works in any language appearing at auction in the past 39 years, beyond which the records do not go. A Very Good copy of this quite scarce assemblage of Verner von Heidenstam's works, being only the second book of von Heidenstam's work to be published in English translation, having an excellent Provenance, and having been SIGNED BY THE PRIOR OWNER, CLARE BOOTHE LUCE and, most notably, SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

All-Australia Memorial (New South Wales edition) : a historical record of the national effort during the Great War. Australia's Roll of Honour : history, heroes and helpers

Melbourne: British-Australian Publishing Service. 1919. With over 1,000 double-tone illustrations from original photographs, drawings, maps, portraits, etc. Fully indexed. Foreword by Senator the Hon. George Foster Pearce, Minister of State for Defence. 4to. 252pp, 144pp, 1c-16c, 1d-16d (last publisher's device only). Large folding frontis, 9 other folding illustrations (one is a map, two are large) and 20 single-page tipped-in illustrations; all these are tipped to heavy card leaves not counted in the pagination. The single-page illus are mounted within a printed border; two of these card leaves have a border on the verso also but there are no plates missing. A 4pp section of coloured paper between pp8&9 has a Dedication poem (to the Immortal Anzacs), a tipped-in image of the Governor General - but lacks another, of King George V, although this does not appear to have ever been present (and there is a small scuff near foot of this page and the one facing where there has been some adhesion) - and an image of the NSW Governor printed on the page. The recto of the first leaf (of heavy card) - which carries the large folding frontis on its verso - has a 4pp card (145x118mm) mounted within a decorative border; the Australian military forces badge is on the front, inside is a mounted (real) photograph (125x75mm) with the soldier's printed service record mounted on the facing page. The soldier is Pte D. Clark, 35th Battalion, a carpenter of Stockton NSW, who enlisted in February 1916, was wounded and gassed at Messines in June 1917, invalided to Britain and returned home in November 1918 and discharged. The frontis and two other large folding illustrations have all been repaired with clear archival tape; one is very minor, the other a little more, the frontis quite a bit. Original purple cloth over bevelled boards, the spine faded, the extremities rubbed with corners a little frayed. All edges gilt. The half-title is a little silverfished along its fore and head edges. The signature where the two folding plates are placed is slightly proud of the block but the sewing only slightly strained. Very clean inside. A good+ copy. ***The date 1917 is printed on the spine, but 1919 appears on the title-page. Part I: Exploits of the Anzacs & Part II: Australia's Fighting Families. The first section covers the entire war, although great prominence is given to the Gallipoli campaign. The second section consists of the service records of NSW men, and photographs of many of them. A publishers note reads: 'With over 300,000 men enlisted in the AIF it is clearly impossible to include a Record of Service of every man in a single volume...' but encourages more biographical details and photos to be sent in for inclusion of future compilations. The listing are alphabetical to a point; that is, after an initial alphabetical list, other names follow, in another alphabetical sequence and the pattern is repeated, but out-of-order names are not uncommon. .

Kino's Historical Memoir of Pimeria Alta are actually volumes 3 and 4 in the series. Kino came to New Spain (lower California) as a missionary in 1681, and eventually left to go to Pimeria Alta (northern Sonora and southern Arizona), where he remained until his death in 1711. He established agriculture as a way of life at the missions he founded, and brought in cattle, horses, and sheep which helped to develop ranching for the natives. He also made two expeditions down the Colorado River in 1701-02, and his maps of Pimeria Alta were the basis for maps of the region until the 19th century. By Julia Ellsworth Ford. Rhymes by Witter Bynner. New York: Moffat, Yard & Co., 1919.First edition. Inscribed by Julia Ellsworth Ford on the half-title "To / Hollis wishing him a / happy Xmas. From / Aunt Julia./ Dec 1919." Additionally this copy is signed on the title-page by Witter Bynner. Quarto 9 1/2 x 7 5/16 inches; 241 x 186 mm.). viii, 9 -78 pp. Three full-page color plates and ten full-page black and white drawings. Original light blue cloth with pictorial stamping on the front cover in black, spine lettered in black. Bookplate on front paste-down. Spine slightly faded otherwise a near fine copy housed in a light tan cloth slipcase."The idea of the Selfish Giant in this play has been taken from the story of Oscar Wilde's Selfish Giant. Spring would not come to his garden because he would not let the children play in it. It was always winter there. One morning he woke up hearing the music of a linnet singing in his garden. He jumped out of bed and saw a most wonderful sight, "flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing," and in every tree was a little child; but one little boy was too tiny to climb the tree and the Giant's heart melted and he helped the little child into the tree. The little child kissed him and forever after the children played in the Giant's garden, because his heart had softened through love of the little child. The children never saw the child again. But one day he came to the Giant, who saw on the palms of the child's hands "the prince of two nails and the prince of two nails were on the little feet". The little child had come to take the Giant to play in his garden, "which is Paradise." My indebtedness to this story is the character of the Selfish Giant. The little play of Snickerty Nick is not a dramatization of The Selfish Giant. The character of Snickerty Nick is an original character and the play centers around him. The little boy is only a loving and beloved child, and Spring and Winter are personified by faeries and gnomes. To Arthur Rackham I tender my most sincere thanks whose magic touch, as in Peter Pan, Grimm's Faery Tales and Undine, making real all faeries and gnomes, endears all child life to grown-ups as well as to children."         La Boite ê Joujoux. Ballet pour Enfants par André Helle. Musique de Claude Debussy

Paris: Durand & Fils, 1919. First edition. Hand-colored title page + 4 preliminary leaves with hand-colored illustrations, 5 divisional titles hand-lettered and illustrated in color, and 13 full-page color pochoir plates, after Andre Helle. 1 vols. 10 x 13 inches. Original cream boards as issued, lettered by hand, in the original glassine. Loose in binding, flyleaves detached and chipping, but the text itself and the boards are very good. Music by Debussy, Illustrations and Text by Andre Hellé First edition of this thoroughly delightful yet fragile book, reproducing the children's ballet which debuted in 1919 with sets and costumes designed by Hellé, the great children's illustrator (Debussy had composed the music in 1913). The story - what else but of love and war? - takes place in a toy-box, toy-boxes being, as Hellé has it "really just like towns in which toys live like people - or maybe towns are really just toy-boxes in which people live like toys ... " Hellé's ingenious illustrations have all the irresistible charm of childhood, and the book is a delight. It was issued in two bindings: wrappers, at 12 francs, boards, as here, at 15 france. Both are very scarce.

Friedrich Dehne Verlag 1919. .

, 1919. 1919. CHARMAISON, Raymond. Les Jardins Pr?cieux. Pr?face by Henri de R?gnier. [vi], [8] pp. Illustrated with 8 full-page colour pochoir plates by Charmaison, plus coloured cover illustration and one black-and-white title illustration. Folio, 490 x 335 mm, bound in original publisher's printed paper folding chemise, preserved in yellow cloth folding box with red morocco title-llabel. Paris: Chez Meynial, 5 November 1919.First Edition. Limited to 300 numbered copies. A colourful example of Deco luxuriousness, which only pochoir printing under the guidance of Jean Saud? could achieve. One of the premier books of Art Deco illustration. These imaginary "Precious Gardens" are a testament to the power of the printed book as a vehicle for transporting the viewer/reader into the garden and a world of dreams. As Henri R?gnier observes in the book's gold-printed preface: "Il contient quelques feuilles avec des lignes et des couleurs, ? peine les aurez vous consider?es que vous serez transport? dans un pays de lumi?re et de soliel..." The exquisite coloured plates offer garden views centered on a special garden feature. For example, the cover illustrates an idyllic forest stream; plate 1, "La Salle Verte" shows a Roman garden with pool, bright flowers, and marble columns; plate 2, "Les Flo" captures a yew-covered walk along the seashore; plate 3, "La Jarre" a terracotta pot is the focus of a brightly-flowered Mediterranean garden; plate 4, "L'Allée Rouge" evokes an Oriental garden with iris, red walkway, Japanese bridge and exotic trees; plate 5, "L'Atrium" an interior garden with fountain, potted trees and lounging cushions; plate 6, "Le Berceau" a lush covered berceau with tropical fruit; plate 7, "La Charmille" a verdant gateway into a hortus inclusis; and plate 8, "La Creille Rose" a night-time view of wisteria and roses on a trellis under the stars etc. -- each one rendered in the richest colours of the pochoir technique.Pierre Corrard, novelist and poet, established his publishing house in 1912 and began working with such noted illustrators of the day as Georges Barbier, Charles Martin and A.E. Marty. After his death his wife, Nicole Corrard, resumed his publishing efforts under the name "Collection Pierre Corrard." The luxurious pochoir renderings of fashion designs issued by Corrard conveyed the artistry of French haute couture during this period; the same is true of his stunning plates for Les Jardins Précieux, which provided a fresh expression of the new artistic visions of the "jardin d'artiste." Lacking ribbon tie, else, a very fine copy.
