La Boite ê Joujoux. Ballet pour Enfants par André Helle. Musique de Claude Debussy

Paris: Durand & Fils, 1919. First edition. Hand-colored title page + 4 preliminary leaves with hand-colored illustrations, 5 divisional titles hand-lettered and illustrated in color, and 13 full-page color pochoir plates, after Andre Helle. 1 vols. 10 x 13 inches. Original cream boards as issued, lettered by hand, in the original glassine. Loose in binding, flyleaves detached and chipping, but the text itself and the boards are very good. Music by Debussy, Illustrations and Text by Andre Hellé First edition of this thoroughly delightful yet fragile book, reproducing the children's ballet which debuted in 1919 with sets and costumes designed by Hellé, the great children's illustrator (Debussy had composed the music in 1913). The story - what else but of love and war? - takes place in a toy-box, toy-boxes being, as Hellé has it "really just like towns in which toys live like people - or maybe towns are really just toy-boxes in which people live like toys ... " Hellé's ingenious illustrations have all the irresistible charm of childhood, and the book is a delight. It was issued in two bindings: wrappers, at 12 francs, boards, as here, at 15 france. Both are very scarce.

        Rhythmen

Friedrich Dehne Verlag 1919. .

        MARGARET PROTESTS

London: Erskin Macdonald Ltd. 1919. First edition, first printing. Original black boards with red lettering to front panel and spine in dustwrapper. A very good+ copy, slightly bumped to head and tail of spine and with scattered light foxing to endpapers in a very good edge-worn but complete dustwrapper with a few small chips at the folds and spine tips and a long closed tear between the front fold and flap. The spine and front panel are evenly browned. A nice example of this rare feminist novel, especially so in its original dustwrapper. The first novel by Margaret Leonora Eyles, a feminist and political activist of her day. Eyles wrote for the TLS, edited the women?'s page in The Miner and had a column in the infant Woman?'s Own magazine, in which she established her reputation for a sympathetic understanding of the women?'s issues of the day, writing as an ?'agony aunt?' from the first issue in 1932. Orphaned in childhood and abandoned by her first husband with three children at twenty-four, Eyles experienced first-hand the contemporary hardships of impoverished mothers and wives which would become the central concern of her novels. ?'Margaret Protests?', a bestseller on its publication, is ?'a pitiful ruthless exposure of poverty, inefficient education and modern marriage conditions.?' The novel is also heavily influenced by the writings of Marie Stopes, who published ?'Married Love?' and ?'Wise Parenthood?' the previous year. Eyles tackles themes of abortion and birth control and explores family relationships and education. A controversial and popular author and journalist in her day, Eyles takes a significant place in the history of feminism in literature.         Anita Berber: acht Originallithographieen

Berlin: Gurlitt Presse, 1919. Set of eight 20x25 inch lithographs depicting Anita Berber in various erotic poses taken from her theatrical personas, with varying amounts of hand-tinting added. One of eighty sets, many of which are alleged to have been destroyed after the work was banned; only one other hand-tinted set is known to survive. From the collection of Mel Gordon, author of the biography ?"The Seven Addictions and Five Professions of Anita Berber, Weimar Berlin?'s Priestess of Depravity.?" Each lithograph is laid into a thick card matte, some of which show signs of foxing or light stains. The title sheet, signed by the artist, is edgeworn and foxed. The outer portfolio has splits progressing along some folds, with other wear and staining. Berend?'s specialty at this time was prints of actors and dancers. Gordon writes of this work, ?"Berend sketched eight canvases of the decadent dance personality. Each picture captured Anita in a new and more provocative pose. There was the terrified child in a short hoop-skirt which fell just below her navel, directing the viewer?'s eye straight to the startled figure?'s exposed vagina and lower torso; the smiling adolescent, bagging her nightgown from top to bottom, to display her boyish breasts as well as her pubic hair and a single silk stocking; the confident fashion-plate sprawled across a chair; the inviting whore, sensationally naked except for an open black overcoat, rolled-up stockings and high-heeled pumps; the saucy revue-girl at her makeup table, tonguing a phallic-looking oyster; a hard-faced dancer, in Parisian attire, expertly pleasuring herself with her right leg thrown over the arm of a chair; a beckoning bride, wearing only dark hosiery, in a curtained chamber room; and a naked, open-mouthed showgirl, seated on her fur wraps. ?"The Gurlitt Gallery Press privately printed 80 luxurious sets of the ?'Anita Berber Portfolio?' in the summer of 1919. Berend hand-painted and signed 40 of the oversize lithographic parcels and assumed that because of their fantastic cost and tiny run the series would probably elude Berlin?'s hard-pressed censoring boards. She was wrong. The entire Portfolio was labeled pornographic and quickly suppressed. Ten years later, the drawings reappeared in Viennese erotic encyclopedias and moral histories of the period. They would be among the most enduring images of Anita Berber between the time of her death and the beginning of Nazi rule.?" (The Seven Addictions…, pp.60-62). This folio has also been discussed by Lydia O?'Ryan in her thesis, ?"Performing Bodies?: Locating Charlotte Berend and the Anita Berber Portfolio 1919,?" University of London (Courtauld Institute of Art), 1997.

Series 323 (English Version) Preface, Special remarks on the pictures and 37 chromo-lithographs of original drawings made by the Javanese drawing-master at Solo, R. The illustrations are of 37 wayang characters from the Javanese version of the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.         Yashka

London - Constable and Company, 1919 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The scarce first English edition of this biography of Maria Botchkareva, a soldier who fought in World War I and formed the Women's Battalion of Death. Women's Battalions were segregated all-female combat units formed after the February Revolution by the Russian Provisional Government in a last-ditch effort to inspire the mass of war-weary soldiers to continue fighting in World War I until victory could be achieved. In the spring of 1917 a number of women began pressing the new Provisional Government to expand female participation in the war, and particularly to form combat units of women volunteers. These women, along with a number of high-ranking members of the Russian government and military administration, believed that female soldiers would have significant propaganda value and that their example would revitalize the weary, demoralized men of the Russian army. WIth frontispiece photograph of the author. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some marks and fading to the boards. Slight bumping also. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have some marginal browning, but are quite clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Twenty-one black and white illustrations including a tissue-protected black and white frontis portrait of author. Seven maps. "In the following pages I speak of Russian affairs with the experience of an observer who has lived from early boyhood among the Russian people and has shared with them their joys and sorrows... Since her collapse, Russia has become the focus of social unrest throughout the world. Bolshevism - a foe more deadly to our civilization than German Militarism - cannot be effectively combated unless we understand the circumstances of its origin and working, indissolubly connected with the so-called Russian Revolution - a Revolution that has still to justify its name... The questions that have been put to me so often will rise to the readers' lips - What is Bolshevism and Why did the Russians succumb to its influence?. This book answers these questions in full." - from Preface. Text divided into the following sections: Slavdom, The Tatars, and Autocracy; Democracy, 'Socialism,' and 'Freedom'; Russia at War; Kornilov and the Cossacks. Prior owner's details, dated 1919, upon front free endpaper else unmarked. Small hole in cloth near top of joint between backstrip and front board. Binding intact. A sound copy.
