        8. Dada-Soirée. Mittwoch, d. 9. April 1919. Saal zur Kaufleuten

Zürich 1919 - Handbill program. On the verso advertisements for the Dada 4-5, and a monthly edited publication by Walter Serner "Das Hirngeschwür", and also earlier publications of the movement the "Collection Dada". 1 leaf, 2 printed pages. 280 × 200 mm. Handbill with the program of the 8th Dada Soirée, the last official event of the Dadaists in Switzerland. The program was divided into three acts, the first - printed under the rubric "Mouvement Dada. Manifeste, Vorträge, Kompositionen, Tänze, Simultanische Dichtungen" - was recitations and performances by Viking Eggeling, Käthe Wulff (reading Huelsenbeck and Kandinsky) Tristan Tzara ("La fièvre du mâle," and other selected poems). The performers of the second part were Hans Richter, Hans Heusser, Hans Arp ("Wolkenpumpe"), Susanne Perrotet (with compositions by Arnold Schönberg) and Walter Serner (manifesto and selected poems). The third part started with a dance performance by Käthe Wulff, the "Noir Cacadou" and continued with Serner's and Tzara's recitations and the musical performace of Heusser. "The climax of Dada activity in Zürich, and of Dada as such, was the grand soirée in the Saal zur Kaufleuten on 9th April 1919." (Hans Richter). "April: Serner and Tzara fill the Kaufleuten Hall to capacity for the eighth and final Dada Soirée, bringing Zürich Dada into the realm of big-time entertainment. The first pieces, writes one M. Ch. for the daily 'Berliner Börsen-Courier' (17 April), meet with 'ironic exultation,' particularly a simultaneous poem for twenty people conducted by Tzara. Then Serner reads, 'in a cutting voice,' his manifesto 'Letzte Lockerung' (Final Dissolution), and a scandal breaks out such as old-time Zürichers have never seen. Serner reads calmly while the public hurls orange peels, coins and insults; cigarettes and more coins greet Tzara's new Dada proclamation, drowned out within seconds. 'Messrs. the Dadaists, who were never more unnecessary than presently, should confine their manifestos to their numerous magazines? and not burden the public with them.' The review is accurate in most respects - but its author is really Serner himself, winking at the scandalmongering press." (Matthew S. Witkovsky, in: Dada. Zurich, Berlin, Hannover, Cologne, New York, Paris. Washington, 2005.) [Dada in Zürich 132.; Almanacco Dada p. 600 (illus.); Motherwell-Karpel 56, illus. p. 332.; Verkauf p. 144 (illus.); Richter p. 77ff. (illus.); Tendenzen 3/66.; Düsseldorf 133.; Pompidou: Dada 1448, illus. p. 1003.; Washington: Dada p. 437f.]. Formerly folded, overall in fine condition. Handbill program.         Big Little H.G. Wells. With an Introduction by G.K. Chesterton

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd, 1919. Not Published. Proof sheets, printed on rectos only. [4] ff., [17]-150 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Unbound sheets, loose in trial case binding of maroon cloth. Traces of dampstaining across top. Not Published. Proof sheets, printed on rectos only. [4] ff., [17]-150 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Not Published. The proof copy of Edwin Pugh's work on H.G. Wells, set up in preparation for publication by Thornton Butterworth, and not published after Wells took exception. The "introduction" by G.K. Chesterton is not present. The book describes in considerable detail Wells' early career, including his friendships with George Gissing, Stephen Crane, Jospeh Conrad, and others; and looks at much of Wells} early work. Portions were serialized in the weekly New Witness, July 4th to August 15th, 1919, accepted by Chesterton's sub-editor W.R. Titterton (to whom this volume is dedicated. Chesteron deflected Wells' wrath by suggesting that "sudden demands of other duties" had prevented him from "attending" to the journal, and by publishing Wells' response in the New Witness. Wells later wrote "From first to last [Chesterton] and I were very close friends and never for a moment did I consider him responsible for Pugh's pathetic and silly outburst." With two loosely inserted typed memoranda giving background on Pugh and the controversy. The first, dated 25 September 1923, and signed Joseph Anthony, notes that the book "gives a vivid and idyllic picture of Wells's early period ... he half loves well, half detests him"; the second, dated 3 October, concludes against publication. There is no indication of the American publishing house for which these memoranda were prepared. Pugh was a novelist and writer whose works included The Purple Head (1905) and The Dickens Originals (1912). A RARE AND FASCINATING SURVIVAL.

        L'Ode a Picasso

, 1919 1919. COCTEAU, Jean. L'Ode a Picasso. [66] pp. 8vo., bound in original wrappers, in a morocco-backed slipcase. Paris: A La Belle Edition, 1919. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of one of the first written tributes to the genius of Picasso. Cocteau wrote the work in 1916 but was unable at the time to find a publisher. The clever typographical layout resulted in the accusation from John Richardson that the book is a "slick pastiche of Mallarme," but he does go on to say that Cocteau was the only writer to have understood the significance of Picasso's Seated Man. One of an edition of 339 copies, this being one of the 300 on Verge d'Arches. A remarkably scarce book.

[Photograph Album, cover title]: Le Automobili Reali Fiat al servizio del Signor Presidente Wilson

Roma: G. Felici. 1919. Oblong folio. Red morocco decorated and titled in gilt. Modest rubbing, mostly along the spine, else near fine. A wonderful collection of 29 large gelatin silver and gold-toned gelatin images, each measuring approximately 9" x 6.5", mounted on thick card, concerning Woodrow Wilson and his visit to Italy in 1919. Handwritten title page in ink, and three additional internal pages lettered in ink. Each image is neatly captioned in ink. Most of the images depict Wilson and other notables riding in Fiat touring cars, a few are of a small fleet of the cars unoccupied. Wilson spent six months, roughly the first half of 1919, in Europe for the Paris Peace Conference, becoming the first U.S. President to travel to Europe while in office, and the first to visit the Pope. The title page dates to Wilson's arrival in Rome on 3 January 1919. The first section depicts Wilson's triumphant arrival parading in Rome (nine images); the fleet of automobiles lined up outside a Fiat dealership or showroom in Rome (two images); Wilson's Tour of the Monuments of Rome in his Fiat Cars (12 images); and his arrival at the Vatican on January 4th (six images). Whether this album was prepared as a gift to Wilson, or perhaps issued in very small numbers for Fiat automobile officials we do not know, although we can find no other copies in OCLC or any other library catalog, including all of the major European databases. .

Paris: H. Piazza, 1919. First Edition in French. No. 520 OF 1,500 COPIES n. Hardcover. 305 x 241 mm. mm (12 x 9 1/2"). 2 p.l., 145, [3] pp. First Edition in French. No. 520 OF 1,500 COPIES. ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE RICH GREEN MOROCCO BY ROOT & SON (signed on rear turn-in), covers framed in gilt with triple rules, the inner rule entwined at corners with ivy leaf terminations, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments formed by double rule and featuring ivy leaf cornerpieces around an inner central panel, wide ruled turn-ins with foliate cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges rough trimmed. Original wrappers preserved. Decorative initials and title page, decorative borders throughout, and 27 COLOR PLATES BY DULAC (each laid down within a decorative frame, and with a captioned tissue guard). Printed in pale orange and black throughout. Front pastedown with bookplate of Joseph H. Haines. Hughey 35h. Upper corners slightly bumped, verso of free endpapers a little discolored (from glue?), otherwise A VERY FINE COPY. This is an attractively bound collection of tales from the "1,001 Nights," including the famous "Sinbad," charmingly illustrated by Dulac in the styles of Persian miniatures and Japanese prints. This edition contains four more plates than the English printing of the same work in 1914, and the text frames and other decorative elements are also unique to this French translation. Between 1907, when his "Arabian Nights" appeared, and 1920, Dulac's works found an appreciative audience. His illustrations have a sophisticated and exotic tone with rich color, reminiscent of the paintings of Gustav Klimt. The London bindery of William Root & Son consistently turned out excellent work, both on fine bindings as here and on trade bindings of multi-volume sets. This copy's prior owner, Joseph Howell Haines, was an avid book collector and friend of Philadelphia publisher George Lippincott.

        Anglo-American Journal.

London, Anglo-American Oil Co., Ltd., 1919-1921.. 4to. A run, from vol. 1, no. 1, to vol. 3, no. 7. 31 original issues, each 16 pp. with numerous illustrations, occasional sketch maps and diagrams, and advertisements. Each issue near-fine in the original pictorial wrappers.. Published monthly by the Anglo-American Oil Co., Ltd., Queen Anne's Gate, London, S.W. for the information of Employees and Shareholders. Anglo-American Oil was an affiliate of Standard Oil, founded by John D. Rockefeller; in the 1930s it rebranded itself, and took as its name the phonetic abbreviation of its parent company, SO i.e. ESSO. The journal published news about the company's ships and their captains, both during the recent war and on normal service, portraits and information about director and managers, announcements of general meetings, in-house information relating to the establishment of new branches, contributions of the company to e.g. the war effort, articles on a range of subjects ('The Constitution of Petroleum', 'Production of Crude Oil in 1920', 'The Making of British Roads', etc.; John D. Rockefeller contributes a article in the second issue on 'Reconstruction in Industry'). Advertisements for Pratt's Perfection Spirit, a notable petrol of the day, feature prominently, but there are also advertisements for Brooklands, and similar interests. The front and rear cover to each issue reproduces a full-colour illustration of a prominent British building or landmark by Jessie Currie. The Anglo-American journal is rare, with few institutional holdings; copies in such well-preserved original condition are scarce.

        Twenty Drawings (Signed limited edition)

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1919. First edition. Very Good +. Folio, original white Japanese paper spine, gold Japanese paper boards, top edge gilt. Number 54 of 100 copies of the signed limited edition. The book is in Very Good + condition with the paper boards worn at the corners and edges and the gilt a bit rubbed on the vellum spine, but internally in excellent condition. Complete with the twenty drawings by the author, each with a separate tissue guard with the title printed on it. Gibran's second book printed in the US, after "The Madman" and right before "The Prophet." Signed copies of Gibran's work are becoming increasingly scarce. "Twenty Drawings" contains rare, figural drawings by Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer. While appreciated artistically by a select few, this book remained in relative obscurity until Gibran's rise to fame for his masterpiece "The Prophet" (1923). "Twenty Drawings" exhibits Gibran's "graceful emotional exposition of form" (The Nation), and demonstrates the influence of studying with Auguste Rodin in Paris. Very Good +.

[London: Printed for the Author at the Chiswick Press, December 1919]. - Small octavo. Sewn unlettered blue wrappers (not stapled, as the bibliographers assert). Two small pictorial vignettes. Wrappers neatly split along spine with careful restoration along the spine, mild soiling and a bit of small corner loss to the wrappers, a few smudges and bits of foxing, but a good copy. Half morocco slipcase. An association copy of the first order of the first edition of Graves's fourth book, printed in an edition of two hundred copies for private distribution. This copy is inscribed by Graves on the inside of the front wrapper: "Ivor Gurney from Robert Graves." Gurney (1890-1937), among the 16 Great War Poets honored in the Poets Corner of Westminister Abbey, is one of the most tragic. Both a talented composer and a poet, Gurney served with the Gloucestshire Regiment and was wounded in April 1917. He returned to the Front, and within the same span of time as his first collection, SEVERN AND SOMME, was accepted for publication, in September 1917 he was gassed and sent to hospital. He suffered a serious mental breakdown in 1918, the cause of which, though still controversial, has been occasionally labeled deferred shell-shock. He spent the last fifteen years of his life in psychiatric hospitals, but continue to write poetry until 1930, by which time his mental condition had sufficiently deteriorated to bring an end to his writing. Gurney likely met Graves on a November 1919 trip to Oxford at the invitation of John Masefield, and in the wake of that meeting, Gurney set six of Graves's poems to music -- at least four of the settings were published. Copies of this title almost inevitably bear presentations from Graves to friends, mentors or those from whom he wished to earn favor, so one certainly has a small but interesting world of association copies to choose from; nonetheless, this is one of the more evocative association copies of TREASURE BOX that have come our way.         British War Cabinet Document Receipt from the Villa Majestic, Paris, signed by Winston Churchill on 17 May 1919 during the Paris Peace Conference

Paris, 1919. This intriguing piece of history is a document receipt signed by Winston Churchill on 17 May 1919 while attending the Paris Peace Conference.  The receipt measures roughly 5 x 4 inches, printed and stamped in purple ink on plain white stock, with autograph in both pencil and red.  The words “RECEIVED from –“ and “ADDRESSED to –“ as well as a line for “Signature” are printed in purple and the upper right corner bears the oval stamp, also in purple, of the “BRITISH WAR CABINET * VILLA MAJESTIC, PARIS *” date stamped “17 MAY 1919”.  In pencil below “RECEIVED from –“ is “B.E.D. Notice” (“B.E.D." being the abbreviation for "British Empire Delegation").  In pencil beside and below “ADDRESSED to –” is “The Rt Hon Winston Churchill, M.P.”  On the signature line, in red, Churchill signed “WS CHURCHILL”.  The receiptÂ’s upper blank verso retains a fragment of the document for which it was ostensibly the affixed receipt.  During the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, the British government delegation resided at the Hotel Majestic.  In May 1919 Churchill was serving as British Secretary of State for War and Air.  Only in his mid-40s and still two decades away from becoming Prime Minister, he was nonetheless already a polarizing national figure who had held several important Cabinet positions and been a political force since the turn of the century.  In the First World War, Churchill remarkably served both in the Cabinet and on the front, nearly losing his political life in the former and his corporeal life in the latter.  Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, but was scapegoated for the Dardanelles tragedy and the slaughter at Gallipoli and forced to resign.  He would spend part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches.  By the war's end, he was exonerated and rejoined the Government, initially as Minister of Munitions.  In January 1919, Churchill became Secretary of State for War and Air – the same month that the Paris Peace Conference convened.  On 17 May 1919, Churchill arrived in Paris at 2:00 am.  His meetings in Paris that day included Field Marshal Sir Henry Hughes Wilson (Chief of the Imperial General Staff), Lord Alfred Milner (Secretary of State for the Colonies), Edwin Samuel Montagu (Secretary of State for India), General Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh, and Edward George Villiers Stanley (Lord Derby, British Ambassador to France).  Issues commanding his attention ranged from occupation of Jellalabad, to who would be British Military Attache in Paris, to his exhaustive efforts to secure support for anti-Bolshevik factions in Russia.  Perhaps quintessentially Churchillian, Winston was described on 17 May 1919 by Sir Henry Wilson as being both “in good form” and “very mulish.”  (Diary of Sir Henry Wilson, Gilbert, CV IV, Part I, p.654)  Churchill expressed profound – and ultimately prophetic – reservations about harshly punitive terms in the Treaty of Versailles, which was signed on 28 June 1919, six weeks after Churchill signed this receipt.  On 7 July 1921, Churchill would tell the Imperial Conference in London: “The aim is to get an appeasement of the fearful hatreds and antagonisms which exist in Europe…”  Advocating a policy of reconciliation, Churchill wanted Britain to be both “the ally of France and the friend of Germany” to mitigate “the frightful rancour and fear and hatred” between France and Germany which he warned “if left unchecked, will most certainly in a generation or so bring about a renewal of the struggle of which we have just witnessed the conclusion.” ChurchillÂ’s argument did not prevail.  The triumphant army of a bitterly resurgent Germany would set up its headquarters in the ex-Hotel Majestic after FranceÂ’s conquest in June 1940, a month after Churchill became wartime Prime Minister.  This item comes to us from the collection of British book collector and book seller David B. Mayou, known for his knowledge and collection of Churchill material.

, 1919 1919. JOHNSON, Severance. THE ENEMY WITHIN. Hitherto Unpublished Details of the Great Conspiracy to Corrupt and Destroy France. NY: The William A. McCann Company, 1919. 8vo., brown cloth stamped in gilt; 297 pages. First Edition. Signed presentation from Johnson on the verso of the frontispiece: "Jan. 17, 1920. To A. Mitchell Palmer, Attorney General of the United States. From the author, Severance Johnson." Johnson was a special investigator and correspondent at the Paris Peace Conference that ended World War I. Alexander Mitchell Palmer [1872-1936] was U.S. Attorney General under Woodrow Wilson from 1919 to 1921. Known as "The Fighting Quaker," Palmer is most famous for his controversial raids, also known as the "Palmer Raids," under the Espionage Act passed by Congress in 1917. Raids on suspected radical leftists under his administration created much controversy and on June 2, 1919 anarchists bombed Palmer's house in Washington, DC. He was also twice the intended victim of assassins. Palmer's raids, which were also suspected of using torture, rounded up as many as 10,000 radicals with many deported by ship to Russia. In 1920 the American Civil Liberties Union issued a report citing abuses under the raids and eventually they fell out of favor. A nice association copy from a very interesting and controversial period in U.S. history. Copies of "The Enemy Within" are scarce, perhaps bordering on rare- although there has been a recent reprint. With Johnson's personal Paris Conference News Service business card tipped to the front pastedown. Good condition (moderate wear with gilt on cover bright but dull on spine; lacks front endpaper). $750.00.

Essays on the surgery of the temporal bone

London: Macmillan, 1919. Ballance, Charles Alfred (1856-1936) and Charles David Green. Essays on the surgery of the temporal bone. 2 vols. xxiv, 253, [1]; xiii, 255-612pp. 125 plates, many with separate keys. London: Macmillan, 1919. 297 x 222 mm. Original cloth, a little shaken, rear inner hinge of Vol. I partly split, cloth on front cover of Vol. II a bit bubbled. Light toning but a good copy. Ex-library, with library bookplates inside front covers, library labels on spines, embossed library stamps on several leaves, and card pockets, date due slips and bar code labels inside back covers. First Edition of this beautifully produced classic of neurosurgery and aural surgery, which contains ?much clinical wisdom and many magnificent illustrations? (Weir, p. 166). ?Ballance popularized the operation of radical mastoidectomy for advanced middle ear infection (1890), standardized an approach to drain or excise temporal brain abscesses, and was the first to clearly understand the neurological signs of cerebellar abscess (1894). Ballance also devised cranial base approaches to attack infectious thrombophlebitis of the lateral, petrosal, and cavernous sinuses. He was the first to completely remove an acoustic tumor (1894); 18 years later, the patient remained well. Ballance also drained a posterior fossa subdural hematoma (1906) and successfully sectioned the auditory nerve for Meniere?s syndrome (1908). . . . His two-volume set, Essays on the Surgery of the Temporal Bone (1919), remains a brilliantly written and illustrated classic. . . . Ballance was second only to Horsley in reputation as a pioneer British neurological surgeon. Described as a painstakingly slow but delicate and meticulous operator, Ballance made a contribution to neurosurgery and temporal bone surgery that was immense? (Stone). Garrison-Morton 4889.1.
