London: William Heinemann,, 1919. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914?-1917. Octavo. Original midnight-blue cloth, title in silver to the spine and to the front board together with a large block of Endurance stuck in the ice, publisher's device in blind to lower board. Colour frontispiece and 87 half-tone plates, folding map at the rear. Head and tail of the spine slightly crumpled, a little whitened on the spine edges and joints, corners a touch bumped, later ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, evenly browned as usual, the oft-encountered tear to the map-stub professionally repaired , but a far better copy than is usual, the cloth bright, hinges and text-block remaining tight, a highly desirable copy. First edition, first impression. "The failure of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition to even reach the Antarctic continent, much less to cross it via the South Pole, has become the great polar success story of the twentieth century" (Books on Ice). Shackleton embarked in 1914 on the Endurance to make the first traverse of the Antarctic continent; a journey of some 1800 miles from sea to sea. But 1915 turned into an unusually icy year in Antarctica; after drifting trapped in the ice for nine months, the Endurance was crushed in the ice on October 27. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts. Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (DNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal, attributing their survival to Shackleton's exceptional leadership qualities. In recent years, this factor has led to the re-interpretation of the book in terms of a leadership and man-management manual, and several influential attempts have been made to distil from the narrative the underlying principles of Shackleton's command in order that they might be applied more widely. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard remarked in Worst Journey in the World; "For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a Winter Journey, Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen; and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time.

Stabilimento tipo-litografico militare, Bologna. Formato: 2 v. (157 p., [10] c. di tav. ripieg., [74] c. di tav.; 395 p., [14] c. di tav. ripieg.), 32 cm, tela. Ottimo.

Doubleday's] suggestion after much talk. It was to be tried out in the USA and if successful republished in England... The idea of the book was born at Brown's Hotel in February 1919. [Doubleday] argued that it must be complete 'W.D.T.', [Kipling] said what do you mean by W.D.T. to which [Doubleday] replied 'The Whole Damn Thing'.       - GAZE,HAROLD. THE CHEWG-UM-BLEWG-UM. Melbourne, Aukland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington and London: Whitcombe & Tombs Limited, [1919]. 4to (7 3/4 x 10"), [30]p., wraps, color plate on cover, string tie, faint corner stain on cover else near Fine. Illustrated by Gaze with 2 tipped-in color plates (plus color plate on cover repeated in-text), 1 tipped-in black and white plate and 8 pen and ink drawings in-text all featuring a koala, a fairy and a strange animal with the body of an emu and a camel's head. The story is told in verse. This is one of 3 titles in the Mite Merry Series. Gaze was born in New Zealand and except for a short stint at art school in London, he was largely self-taught. He eventually moved to Pasadena where he did some work for the Disney Studio. Although he didn't illustrate a large number of books his work is distinctive and wonderful. Holden in Golden Age p. 80 notes about the books in this series that "by Australian standards these titles were milestones in the history of children's book production. Their large quarto format and pleasing typography and layout were indicative of the publisher's understandable enthusiasm and belief that a major new talent had arrived." Marcie Muir notes that "After Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, the artist who dominated the fairy genre in Australian children's books was Harold Gaze " (Hist. Aust. Child. Bks. p77).         79th Division Headquarters Troop: A Record

[N.p.] Privately printed,, [1919]. Tall quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to front board gilt, edges uncut. Frontispiece with vignettes in the text by Frank E. Horn. Tips slightly bumped and extremities a little rubbed. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing. The authors served in the 79th Division during the First World War (a unit of the US Army, created in 1917). After combat in France during the First World War, it earned the nickname "Cross of Lorraine", and for several months in 1919 the authors co-edited a troop newspaper called The Lorraine Cross. Laid-in is a typed letter signed from Cain to a fellow American, who had served in the Red Cross in France in 1919; it is dated 18 April 1976. Cain mentions The Lorraine Cross and the 79th Division, and he concludes: "I don't drive a car any more, it being unanimously agreed I could not only break my own neck but perhaps 25 others, on account of a tricky heart, but if you do, we can go to lunch and reminisce." This book precedes what is generally regarded as Cain's first book, Our Government, by 11 years. Scarce.

1919 China Photo Album - HONG KONG - RACE TRACK - Wharf Market - Customs and WWI Celebrations

Hong Kong 1919 - China Photograph Album - Hong Kong Wharf Market and Race Track - Custom and Celebration - also Capturing an Historic Moment - End of World War I in 1919. Hong Kong, 1919. Album of 75 original photographs immediately following the First World War, taken by an officer of the British Armed Forces in Hong Kong. Photographs vary in size, the smallest being 1.75 x 2.5 cm, and the largest being 4.25 x 6 inches. Oblong octavo album, brown cloth boards, 6.5 x 10 inches, vivid blue cardstock leaves. Exterior wear and minor aging, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a pleasing album of unusual scenes. Chinese custom is captured in photographs of a wharf market, women feeding their infants, a small sampan or canopied boat, civilians resuming their normal routine, and many celebrating peace. Officers of the regiment are seen in a parade, at a funeral, and enjoying the Chinese horse racing tradition at a large race track, and finally enjoying some leisure time. One of the barracks consists of straw thatched huts. Photographs of the city's post war celebrations serve to date the album. In particular, a banner reads "28th June 1919" in recognition of the Treaty of Versailles is mounted on a colonial building which also bears the insignia of the League of Nations, having just been founded at the Paris Peace Conference. Compiled by an officer of the Royal Scots Infantry Regiment, stationed in Hong Kong, this album contains some unique scenes, beginning with a view of Queen Street where flags of America, Japan, France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and others, celebrate collaboration, and the phrase "VICTORY AND PEACE" flank the adjacent hillside for all to see.

        Rhythmen

Privately Printed (Mitchell Starrett Buck). LEATHER BOUND. B00ZM136FS 1919 limited edition (26 copies) 'Privately Printed' by the translator, Mitchell S. Buck / Nicholas L. Brown (New York), 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches tall red full leather signed Stikeman & Co. bound, ornate gilt ruling to covers and lettering to spine, top page edges gilt, fore and bottom page edges untrimmed, green and red leather front and rear pastedowns ornately tooled in gilt (with Stikeman and Co. in gilt to the bottom of the rear leather pastedown), beige moire endpapers, printed on fine Japan vellum paper, 30 full-page engravings (10 hand-colored) with tissue guards, xx, 269 pp. Bumping to lower tip of front board and upper tip of rear board. Slight rubbing to covers, and moderate edgewear, with a couple of nicks to the fore edge of the front board and wear visible along the spine. A couple of unopened signatures (easily remedied with a playing card). Occasional very slight marginal foxing. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce limited edition issue, magnificently bound by the legendary Stikeman and Co. of New York. Identified on the limitations page as Copy I of 26 copies (A - Z) produced on Japan vellum (a fine, thick, glossy paper, made in imitation of vellum, generally, as here, a light tan color, produced in Japan from native fibers that are of relatively great length). The sensuous frontispiece and nine other full-page art nouveau engravings are in this limited edition presented in three versions - in black ink (as given in all other editions), in red ink and hand colored - for a total of 30 engravings, each with tissue guard. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. Contact us for links to more than a dozen high-resolution images of this handsome volume, a rarity among early American erotica, especially in such a distinctive binding by the renowned New York firm of Stikeman and Co., founded by Henry Stikeman (d. 1932), and rising to American preeminence as ornate binders in the late nineteenth century. ~DD~ Aphrodite is the first book published by American poet, translator and classical scholar Mitchell S. Buck (1887 - 1959), a translation of the 1896 first novel of the French decadent Pierre Louys, Aphrodite: Moeurs Antiques. The best-selling work of French fiction of its day, Aphrodite is a voluptuous look at courtesan life in ancient Alexandria, telling the story of Chrysis, a courtesan, and the sculptor Demetrios. Buck's translation first appeared in 1913, as here 'privately printed,' probably at the translator's expense. According to Buck's introduction, in this 1919 issue errors were corrected, 'the entire translation carefully revised, and the illustrations added.' It most likely was arranged through former Philadelphia bookseller Nicholas L. Brown, who officially became a publisher in 1916, and thereafter issued most of Buck's output, moving to New York in 1918. Between 1916 and 1932, Brown published small editions of poetry, belles lettres and translations, sometimes without his imprint but stating that the title has been 'issued privately for subscribers' (in order to evade prosecution for dealing in obscene materials). Such classical erotica is very tame by modern standards, but in the teens and twenties such material was policed by self-appointed authorities such as John S. Sumner of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Sumner and his ilk had success in getting various literary works banned, such as Theodore Dreiser's The Genius (1915) and James Branch Cabell's Jurgen (1919). Pierre Louys (1870 - 1925) was a French poet and writer, most renowned for lesbian and classical themes in some of his writings. He is known as a writer who sought to 'express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection.' Aphrodite, his first novel, is considered a mixture of both literary excess and refinement, and, numbering at 350,000 copies, was the best selling work by any living French author in his day. Many erotic artists have illustrated Louys's writings, but we have been unable to identify the artist here, who signed the work with a distinctive script 'L.' In his Foreword to Louys's 1932 Collected Works, Buck noted how the times had already changed: 'Unless we are professional reformers, we are no longer shocked, except at tragedy. ... we can, in the main, observe public semi-nudity without rioting. Even the sinister manifestations of sex are known to all who care to read about them. And our physical health and perfection now receive as much, if not more, attention than the ultimate destination of our soul. All of which is a rather encouraging development.' . Good. 1919. First Edition.

Green quarter morocco (Maroquin) with gilt lettering and ornaments on spine. Marbled paper covered boards. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. The bindings a little rubbed but still a very unusual and magnificent binding - job. A very rare set ! Edith Anna Œnone Somerville (2 May 1858 ?- 8 October 1949) was an Irish novelist who habitually signed herself as "E. Œ. Somerville". She wrote in collaboration with her cousin "Martin Ross" (Violet Martin) under the pseudonym "Somerville and Ross". Together they published a series of fourteen stories and novels, the most popular of which were The Real Charlotte, and The Experiences of an Irish R. M., published in 1899. The eldest of eight children, Somerville was born on the island of Corfu, then part of the United States of the Ionian Islands, a British protectorate where her father was stationed. A year later, her father retired to Drishane, Castletownshend, County Cork, where Somerville grew up. She received her primary education at home, and then attended Alexandra College in Dublin. In 1884 she studied art in Paris, and then spent a term at the Westminster School of Art in Dean's Yard, Westminster. At home, riding and painting were her absorbing interests. In January 1886 she met her cousin Violet Martin, and their literary partnership began the following year. Their first book, An Irish Cousin, appeared in 1889. In 1898 Edith Somerville went to paint at the Etaples art colony, accompanied by Violet. There they profited from their stay by conceiving together the stories later gathered in Some Experiences of an Irish R. M., completed the following year. By the time Violet died in 1915, they had published fourteen books together. Her cousin's death stunned Edith, who continued to write as "Somerville and Ross", claiming that they kept in contact through spiritualist séances. Somerville was a devoted sportswoman who in 1903 had become master of the West Carbery Foxhounds. She was also active in the suffragist movement, corresponding with Dame Ethel Smyth. She was in London still recovering from the shock of Violet's death when the Easter Rising of 1916 broke out. On 9 May she wrote a letter to the Times, blaming the British government for the state of affairs in Ireland. After that she tended towards Nationalism, and as an adept musician at parties she specialized in Irish tunes and Nationalist songs. She had exhibitions of her pictures in Dublin and in London between 1920 and 1938 and was active as an illustrator of children's picture books and sporting picture books. In 1936 her brother Henry Boyle Townsend Somerville, a retired Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy, was killed by the I.R.A. at the family home of Castletownshend. She finished his book "Will Mariner" after his death. She died at Castletownshend in October 1949, aged 91. (Wikipedia)

I Jaillit Une Larme" [Yiddish title] ("Noteif Notfoh") pour chant et piano. Op. 23, No 3. [No. 47] [FROM THE PERSONAL COLLECTION OF CANTOR T. VAINSTEIN]

Obshchestvo Evreiskoi Muzyki - Société de la Musique Hébraïque, Moscow 1919 - Folio. 6pp. Original wrappers splendidly illustrated by Russian Avant Garde artist El Lissitzky, who helped develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designed numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the Soviet Union. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, and he experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design. Complete musical score of "I Jaillit Une Larme" ("Noteif Notfoh"), a music composed and arranged for voice and piano by Russian Jewish composer Aleksandr Abramovich Kre n* (1883-1951). Sporadic and minor foxing, creasing and tiny closed tears along edges of wrappers. Previous owner's stamp (Cantor T. Vainstein) at upper margin of front cover. Upper margin of page 2, partly taped. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Yiddish, Russian, French, and transliterated Yiddish. Wrappers and interior in overall good+ condition. * Krein's pioneering spirit had led him to incorporate the intonations and styles of both sacred and secular Jewish music into a relatively advanced idiom that was as influended by French impressionism as it was by the music of his friend Alexander Scriabin. Krein's own Jewish heritage was a constant source of inspiration; there are a number of instrumental works whose titles bear quite obvious witness to this, such as the "Caprice Hebraique," Op. 24, and the "Jewish Sketches" for clarinet and string quartet. In 1921, he composed "Kaddish" for tenor soloist, choir, and orchestra. From the mid-'20s on, he also wrote music for plays given by Moscow's Jewish Drama Theater. There is also a large amount of music that is either purely classical in design or Soviet in nature. In the latter category are works like the revolutionary opera Zagmuk (1930), the Threnody in Memory of Lenin (1925), and the somewhat amusingly titled U.S.S.R., Shock Brigade of the World Proletariat (1925).         Leon Trotsky appoints Alexander Kerensky's former military aide and brother-in-law to an important military post in Moscow at the height of the Russian Civil War

Moscow, September 26, 1919. 8.75" x 12.5". "Typed Document Signed, ""L Trotsky"", in blue grease pencil, as People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs of the Soviet Union, 1 page, 8.75"" x 12.5"", Moscow, September 26, 1919, in Russian, ordering the appointment of V. L. Baranovskiy as Chief of Staff to the commander of Red Army forces in Moscow. Additionally signed in pencil by Sergey Kamenev (1881-1936) as Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army. Minor losses at reinforced left margin not affecting text, light creases, else very good condition. Accompanied by a complete translation. The document reads (translated) in most part: ""Deputy Chief of the General Staff's Central Office of General Military Training V.L. BARANOVSKIY is hereby appointed Chief of Staff of the Commander of Troops of the Moscow Sector, in line with which he shall keep the position he currently holds."" A superb document from the apex of Trotsky's short career as founder and leader of the Red Army. Signed in the midst of the Russian Civil War, at a critical juncture when anti-Soviet forces were approaching both Moscow and Petrograd. Here Trotsky appoints Colonel V. L. Baranovskiy as Chief of Staff to the Chief of the military district of Moscow. Although Trotsky took enormous pains to enforce political loyalty, he was not above appointing officers who might have questionable credentials. Colonel Baranovskiy was both a key aid to Alexander Kerensky, whose short-lived provisional government had been overthrown by the Bolsheviks in October 1917, and the deposed leader's brother-in-law (Brian D. Taylor, Politics and the Russian Army, 2003, p. 104)."

Autograph letter signed in full to the noted Czech-born Austrian architect Adolf Loos

. 1/2 page text to recto with floor plan (by Loos?) in pencil to verso. Small octavo, 215 x 132 mm. Dated Mödling, near Vienna, February 7, 1919. Schoenberg's name and address handstamped in purple ink to upper left corner. In German (with translation). Schoenberg suggests an answer to the "call" of the French writer Henri Barbusse for his pacifist "Clarte" movement. He suggests times that he would be available for a possible meeting: "Dear Herr Loos, in my opinion we should react to Henri Barbusse's call that was in the papers of February 5. Ideally, the three of us: you, Kraus, and I. Would you like to discuss that with me?..." Creased at folds and overall; hinged at upper edge with archival tape.. Unpublished (except for the incipit on the website of Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna). Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a famous early modern architect. "Kraus" is probably a reference to the writer and journalist Karl Kraus (1874-1936), a friend of both Loos and Schoenberg. Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) was a French writer, quite famous in his time; he founded the "Clarte" movement in 1919 together with Romain Rolland.
