        Le Film (33 Issues)

Paris: Pathe Freres, 1919. Original wraps. Very Good +. Hebdomadaire. An impressive crop of 33 issues of this early, very uncommon Parisian trade magazine, issued by "Pathe Freres", one of France's (and the world's) leading film production companies at the time. Spanning 1918 and 1919 (the magazine's 5th and 6th years in existence), this weekly (and sometimes bi-weekly) offers a detailed, very sophsiticated look at mostly the world of French film and cinematography but also covers the world of French theatre, concert-going and music halls. Crisp black-and-white photos run thru each issue, as does wonderful multi-colored typography and design. Magazine-formatted, uniform, tall quartos in their stapled, pictorial wrappers. A razor-thin, innocuous crease running vertically along all of the front covers; otherwise, each issue is clean and crisp and easily VG+ to Near Fine. Internally immaculate as well, with no writing or markings to any of the issues. One of the great undertakings in early French (and international) cinema.

        Fighting the Flying Circus

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company. Near Fine. 1919. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Maps; SIGNED EDITION. This copy has been signed, with a short inscription, by the author, Edward Rickenbacker, on the reverse of the half title page. This copy has also been signed and inscribed by George A. Zabriski "President of the NY Historical Society from 1939 to 1947" and an amateur hand-tooler / binder of note. This copy of Rickenbacker's famous book has been rebound in 1/4 leather with marbled paper covered boards, and has gilt lettering and decorations and raised bands on the spine. The book is in Near Fine condition - with some wear to the edges of the marbled paper on the front board, along with some light bowing to the front boards. The text pages are clean and bright. The front and rear panels of the dust jacket have been bound in at the rear of the book. From Wikipedia: "Most men chosen for pilot training had college degrees and Rickenbacker had to struggle to gain permission to fly because of his perceived lack of academic qualifications. Because of his mechanical abilities, Rickenbacker was assigned as engineering officer at the 3rd Aviation Instruction Center at Issoudun, the US Air Service's pursuit training facility, where he practiced flying during his free time. He learned to fly well, but because his skills were so highly valued, Rickenbacker's superiors tried to prevent him from attaining his wings with the other pilots. Rickenbacker demonstrated that he had a qualified replacement, and the military awarded him a place in one of America's air combat units, the 94th Aero Squadron, informally known as the "Hat-in-the-Ring" Squadron after its insignia. Originally he flew the Nieuport 28, at first without armament. On April 29, 1918, Rickenbacker shot down his first plane. On May 28, he claimed his fifth to become an ace. Rickenbacker was awarded the French Croix de Guerre that month for his five victories." Rickenbacker went on to amass 26 reported (and confirmed) kills during World War I, setting a record that was not broken until World War II. He also logged a total of 300 combat hours, reportedly the most of an US pilot during the war. ; Signed by Author .

London: Constable and Co. LTD., [1919]. First Edition, LIMITED EDITION DE LUXE, one of 575 numbered copies SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM, this being a very early signed copy, signified number 5. This limited edition is also printed on significantly larger paper then the trade issue. With 16 very fine tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue-guards, andhead and tail pieces throughout by Arthur Rackham. 4to, in the original de luxe binding of vellum backed parchment boards, lettered and with Rackham pictorial vignette in gilt on the upper cover, the spine gilt decorated and lettered, t.e.g. Now protected in a custom designed morocco backed slipcase backed featuring raised bands and fine gilt lettering and tooling. 170 pp. A pristine and perfect copy, a joy to behold inside and out, one of the best we have seen, both the parchment and vellum in unusually fine condition. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF THE DE LUXE LIMITED FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY ARTIST ARTHUR RACKHAM. The work is a collection of early English ballads, perhaps inspired by wartime patriotism. Here we find a generous sampling of Rackham’s famous styles, subjects and atmospheres. We encounter mythic gnomes and lithe damsels, brooding dark birds perched and overlooking stark plains, slender maidens greeting their princes, and sinister scenes lit by dim starlight. The graceful line drawings introducing each ballad conjure fanciful creatures and lively human encounters. The color plates vividly depict the subject of the ballads and act to translate the now archaic verse into the timeless language of Rackham’s articulate illustration. We find Rackham’s eloquent brush again and again creating irresistible sentiment and emotional texture . This sentimental rendering of traditional English Ballads is sure to be a treasured addition to any serious Arthur Rackham collection.

Autograph letter signed in full to the noted Czech-born Austrian architect Adolf Loos

      - 1/2 page text to recto with floor plan (by Loos?) in pencil to verso. Small octavo, 215 x 132 mm. Dated Mödling, near Vienna, February 7, 1919. Schoenberg's name and address handstamped in purple ink to upper left corner. In German (with translation).Schoenberg suggests an answer to the "call" of the French writer Henri Barbusse for his pacifist "Clarté" movement. He suggests times that he would be available for a possible meeting:"Dear Herr Loos, in my opinion we should react to Henri Barbusse's call that was in the papers of February 5. Ideally, the three of us: you, Kraus, and I. Would you like to discuss that with me?."Creased at folds and overall; minor remnants of archival paper mounting tape to verso. Unpublished (except for the incipit on the website of Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna). Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a famous early modern architect. "Kraus" is probably a reference to the writer and journalist Karl Kraus (1874-1936), a friend of both Loos and Schoenberg. Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) was a French writer, quite famous in his time; he founded the "Clarté" movement in 1919 together with Romain Rolland.

La Chirurgie Esthétique des Rides du Visage. [In: La Presse Médicale. No 27. Lundi, 12 Mai 1919].

(Paris), 1919. Folio. Entire issue 27, 1919 of La Presse Médicale present (pp. 353- 360). Passot's article: 7 columns on pp. 258-261. With one illustration, depicting the ways to reduce wrinkles on a face. Well preserved.. The very rare first printing of this pioneering work of plastic surgery - one of the very first - most likely THE first - publication on face lifting, consisting mainly in the elevating and redraping of the facial skin. The first facelift was reportedly done in either 1901 or 1907, but "[n]ot all writers of rhytidectomy spread their innovations through publication; some were teachers instead of writers. Sooner or later, however, those they taught began to write. Giving credit to his masters, Pozzi and Morestin, as well as Mlle. Pertat, Raymond Passot in 1919 described the following technique for eliminating cheek wrinkles and the buccolabial sulcus: First, he began the operation by "withdrawing miniscule amounts of tegument in the preauricular region, using as a limit the lower part of the male's sideburns and the region onto which the mass of the female feair falls...." (Gonzales-Ulloa, The Creation of Aesthetic Surgery, p. 43). The paper is extremely famous, not only due to its great influence, but also because it has come to be regarded as a milestone publication in the history of face lifting, being perhaps the very first publication to describe this now so popular method of rejuvenation. "There is still doubt as to who performed the first facelift, but most sources date it to the first decade of the 20th century.... Hollander... in 1932 stated that his original procedure had been preformed in 1901 for a Polish aristocrat. Lexer, however, reported in 1931 that he had preformed a facelift for and acr´tress in 1906 and that he was unaware of any such operation before that date. Joseph reported in 1921 that he had preformed an operation in 1912 for cerrection of aging cheek tissues in a 48-year-old woman. By the time Hollander, lexer, and Joseph reported their first procedures, a number of other prominent surgeons in Europe, such as Noel, Passot, Morseting... were busy performing cosmetic surgical procedures.... Passot in 1919 published an illustrated article showing sites of elliptic skin excision of the hairline, the forehead, and the temporal and preauricular areas to tighten the skin and an elliptic excision of skin and fat to reduce submental fat deposits." (Neligan, Plastic Surgery, vol. 6, p. 184). "In France, Passot was the first surgeon to describe the submental excision to correct a double chin and multiple facial direct excisions in 1919 in his article "La chirurgie esthétiques des rides du visage". (Panfilov, Aesthetic Surgery of the Facial Mosic, p. 5)

Original large three-quarter length portrait photograph signed in full, dated New York 1920, and inscribed to the American writer on music and librettist Frederick H. Martens (1874-1932)

      - From the studios of Strauss Peyton, Kansas City, 1919. Ca. 327 x 228 mm. Laid down to cardboard mount.Slightly worn; occasional cracking; remnants of adhesive to mount. "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove online.Martens' books include The Art of the Prima Donna and Concert Singer (New York, 1923), The Book of the Opera and the Ballet, History of the Opera (New York, 1925) and A Thousand and One Nights of Opera (New York, 1926).

CINDERELLA, Retold by C S Evans

London: William Heinemann, 1919. First edition, LIMITED EDITION DE LUXE, one of 525 numbered copies SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM and printed on English handmade paper. This limited edition is also printed on significantly larger paper then the trade issue. THIS COPY WITH THE VERY RARE DUSTJACKET, SELDOM IF EVER ENCOUNTERED. THE LIMITED ISSUE CONTAINS A COLOUR SILHOUETTE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRADE EDITION, and with the tipped-in colour frontispiece on decorated mounting, decorated titlepage, 3 coloured double-page silhouettes, 14 single page silhouettes, and over 30 silhouette drawings throughout the text, all by Arthur Rackham. 4to, publisher’s original pictorially decorated paper-covered boards backed in tan buckram, the spine lettered and decorated in black, with green endpapers decorated in white by Rackham. In the very RARE original green paper dustjacket lettered and decorated in black. Now protected in a fine morocco backed custom slipcase backed featuring raised bands and fine gilt lettering and tooling. ix, 110 pp. A very fine copy of this elusive title in the limited format, internally uncommonly bright with only very mild hints of the offsetting of which the title was unfortunately prone, the foxing to which the handmade paper was prone is thankfully nonexistent in this copy, the binding near pristine with just a little shelving along the bottom edge, even the rare jacket clean and fresh with only a few tiny chips. LIMITED FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE MORE ELUSIVE TITLES IN RACKHAM’S OEUVRE, SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE ARTIST AND WITH A COLOUR ILLUSTRATION WHICH WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRADE ISSUE. THIS COPY WITH THE RARE DUSTJACKET PRESERVED. The classic tale of Cinderella is here retold with fascinating detail and elaboration by Arthur Rackham artwork. For this title Rackham employees delightful silhouette pictures that are quite a departure from the colourplate style of his more familiar works such as PETER PAN or RIP VAN WINKLE. CINDERELLA is especially difficult to find in nice condition, and this copy is especially well-preserved.

A Book of Princeton Verse II (Fitzgerald's First Appearance in Book Form)

Princeton University Press 1919 - The 1919 1st appearance in book form by F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose 3 poems ("Marching Streets", "The Pope at Confession" and "My First Love") were --famously-- attributed to "T." Scott Fitzgerald. Solid and VG (with bright gilt-lettering at the front panel and spine) in a clean, G+ example of the fragile dustjacket, with a 1 3/4" loss at the spine crown, light chipping as well at the spine base and panel edges --and an inconspicuous, even split at the front hinge, separating the front panel and front flap fold from the rest of the dj. A piece of plastic covering however nicely masks this and renders the entire jacket quite presentable and attractive. 12mo, 179 pgs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
