Feininger, Lyonel, German-American painter, leading proponent of Expressionism (1871-1956)
Zehlendorf-Mitte (Berlin), 24. XII, 1918. 4to. ? p. Feininger writes to Paul van Ostayen (1896-1926), Flemish avant-garde poet related to the Dada and Expressionist movements, who influenced modern literature in Belgium and the Netherlands. Towards the end of the First World War van Ostayen had gone to Berlin for political reasons, stayed for three years and befriended Feininger and other artists and literary figures. Feininger invites van Ostayen to join him and his wife on Boxing Day. "The five pictures have not arrived yet, but we mustn't wait for them in offer to be able to welcome you - Because of the pitiful state of transportation it is very uncertain now when they will arrive. We wish you a non too dreary Christmas [...] in the strange Big City! Only a very easy spirit would talk of 'Merry' now [...]" (transl. from the German original). - An original woodcut showing a church or cathedral in the upper left corner on this golden yellow sheet of onion skin paper. The woodcut is also suggestive of the Bauhaus 1919 Manifesto cover. The paper is fragile and tattered along right and left edges not affecting text. - In the year prior to this letter of 1918, Feininger had his first solo exhibit at Sturm Gallery in Berlin. He was Walter Gropius' first faculty appointment at the Bauhaus in Germany which Gropius founded in 1919. Feininger became the master artist in charge of the printmaking workshop.

Hi, This lot is an Original 1918 Hardback Wisden . It is in Excellent condition. In fact it is as good as my own. The front and spine gilt is excellent and the boards are very good, there are a couple of marks to the boards and a line towards the edge of the rear board. The pastedowns are great and very yellow , on the right hand side there is a name HD Swan in ink and a slight rectangular fade above the 1918. The hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate,

This 1918 Wisden original hardback is in truly fine condition. The front and rear boards are immaculate and the gilt to the front board and spine is in really bright un-restored condition. The spine itself is in really tremendous condition. If you were being really picky the top and bottom of the spine are very very slightly bumped. The front and rear yellow pages are in as new condition and the front and rear hinges are immaculate. The contents are in almost as new condition. Once again a tremendous copy. We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the 1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition. Please keep a look out for them.

1918. Easton Press Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela SIGNED EDITION Signed by Nelson Mandela Very RARE hand dated copy 15.9.00 BOOK ONLY OPENED FOR THE PHOTO (MINOR SHELFWARE AND DING) Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Mandela began his autobiography during the course of his 27 years in prison. This is an articulate, moving account of Mandela's life from his "country childhood" following his birth on July 18, 1918 to his inauguration as president of South Africa on May 10, 1994. Mandela traces the growth of his understanding of the oppression of the blacks of South Africa; his conviction that there was no alternative to armed struggle; his developing belief that all people, black and white, must be free for true freedom; and the effect that his commitment to overthrowing apartheid had on his family, who "paid a terrible price." Over a third of Mandela's memoir tells of his 27 years in prison, an account that could stand alone as a prison narrative. He ends his book with the conclusion that his "long walk" for freedom has just begun: "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.". Los Angeles: Automobile Club of Southern California, 1918. Overall, very good.. Map on seven individual cards, each 3.75 x 10 inches, in original printed storage envelope. Envelope with some dust soiling and light wear. Light tanning to map cards. Rare map of a western section of the Lincoln Highway from Cheyenne to Omaha, published at the end of the 1910s by the Automobile Club of California. The highway, as conceived and dedicated in 1913, ran from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco on state and federal roads; today the route is largely superseded by Interstate 80. This part of the route, consisting of just under 600 miles of roads, ran on U.S. Highways 30, from Cheyenne passing through Kimball, Big Springs, Ogallala, North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus, and Fremont before reaching Omaha. The Automobile Club of Southern California published several such sectional route maps of the Lincoln Highway during the late 1910s, but the present map is not located in any institutions by OCLC.

Hansi (Jean-Jacques Waltz - 1873-1951)
Paris, Lapina, imp. circa 1918. Original color lithograph. 79 x 58 cm. Very good. Normal fold marks. Mounted on archival paper. image: In the foreground beneath a pine tree, three French soldiers (poilus) gaze across a sunlit rural valley beyond a post and wire border fence. In the sky, beyond a barrage balloon and airplane, rises the splendid vision of Strasbourg cathedral, flying the French tricolor. A quotation appears upper left, and top and bottom are decorative bands of tricolor flowers and laurel leaves. text: ..Ce ciel est notre azur Ce champ est notre terre! Cette Lorraine et cette Alsace, c'est à Nous! Victor Hugo [..This heaven is our blue sky, this field is our land. This Lorraine and this Alsace are ours!] Label Jean-Jacques Waltz, 'Hansi', was born in Colmar, part of the German occupied Haut Rhin. He was a fierce French patriot. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Lyons, he returned to Colmar where he began to write and illustrate articles and books ridiculing the German authorities in Alsace and Lorraine. He was condemned for high treason in Leipzig in 1914 but jumped bail and fled to France via Switzerland. He joined the French army as a private but was transferred to propaganda work. His style blends caricature with popular images in the style of Epinal. 'Images d'Epinal' were coloured woodcuts of contemporary subjects widely distributed in France. Hansi's portrait of Alsace under French rule is represented as though it were a fairytale land, with the Cathedral literally glowing on the horizon. .

First and only edition. Extremely rare. This is the earliest Soviet manual on editing and printing mass periodical that was compiled for the provincial publishers. The book is divided into two sections. Separately selected that the provincial publisher needs to focus on cleaning up any typographical errors before the manuscript is typeset - and what proofreading symbols he should use. The book contains a double-page illustration that shows how the text looks with these symbols. The second section features an instruction on how to organize a print shop, what types existed, how the Russian letter case looked like and how to highlight headlines. The folding leaf shows three examples of how newspaper titles may be designed. Two pictures of the linotype machine and rotary printing press are included with description of their working process. Finally, this textbook shortly explains how to organize a subscription and when to sell newspaper copies. At the end of this book, the Сharter of the Union of Soviet Journalists is printed. An interesting and extensive photo album of snapshots of life in the Los Angeles area in the 1910s, containing over 200 original images. The photographer, identified in a self-portrait labeled as "me," was a young woman, and the album appears to chronicle her family and friends on their travels in the rural areas outside the city. There are photos of houses (many which seem to be newly-built), the countryside with freshly-planted orchards, many photos of automobiles, desert and canyon scenery, images of farmyards with livestock, and more. A series of at least six images features apparent earthquake damage, showing crumbling houses and scattered possessions. A nice document of rural life in Southern California, and of the areas around Los Angeles prior to extensive development.
