1900-1918. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 11.5" x 7". Blue cloth over flexible boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 37 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Slightly bowed front board and worn edges else very good with near fine photographs. The album begins with seven photos from an early 1900s wedding which took place in a lush garden. The photos show the bride and bridesmaid walking down the aisle, the exchange of vows, and a toast of the bridal party around a large table. A final photo from this section show the newlyweds in a bridal suite sharing a loving embrace. Following the wedding the photographs document the family life of the couple until roughly 1918 with images of children, friends, and extended family posing around homes and farms. One photo shows a bustling city street, another shows a family in a field posing around an early automobile. Interspersed throughout the album are portraits of the family including one of a pretty young woman holding a fan. Laid-in next to a large photo of a cottage is a note that reads, "in the summer of 1918 I went to LA to take a 3 month class in show card writing and lived in an apartment at 1240 S. Fremont St. with my Aunt Pearl - these are some of the places we visited." This note is followed by photos of car journeys and day trips to a beach with photos of two young women in bathing costumes posing in the water. Berlin: 1918. In very good vintage condition, however, some stains on the print, but not effecting the print itself, and also some staines on the protective paper in book. The inside of the back is loosening and should be repaired - otherwise in very good condition, see also photos which is part of the description. This is a fine copy of the book "Edvard Munch" by Curt Glaser, published by Bruno Cassirer Verlag in Berlin in 1918 and bound with shirting bind in yellow. The book contains an original drypoint print from Edvard Munch's mater hands; "Head of a Man" made in 1906 on heavy cream paper. Print Sheet: 255 x 190 mm Image: 113 x 83 mm The print is unsigned, but it's origin as an original is well documented through Woll 277 c) and Sch. 243) This book on sale is from 1918, and there is also an edition made in 1917. In a letter from Glaser to Edvard Munch 10.04.1918 it appears that both editions of the book were printed in 2000 copies. Condition: The print has some yellow spots, but outside of image surface, the same is the case for the protective paper over the print. PESSOA, Fernando
Lisbon: Monteiro & Co. (1918). One of two books self-published by Pessoa in 1918, the other being Antinous. Both of these publications contain a number of passages that have been interpreted as having a gay sub-text. 35 Sonnets received fairly positive reviews from various British journals although the Times Literary Supplement noted that the author's "command of English is less remarkable than his knowledge of Elizabethan English." Very good in original wrappers, light browning to covers and a few light traces of foxing, pages uncut. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

SANDBURG, Carl
Henry Holt, 1918. First Edition, second state. Hardcover. Octavo, 147pp. A very good copy in the publisher's plain paper boards, stamped in green. A bit musty, with a few tiny stains and nicks at the spine ends, else a nice, crisp copy, very gently cocked. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Sandburg on the front free endpaper two years after publication: "This book for our friend J. Willows [?] Clark - Carl Sandburg. Chicago July, 1920." An attractive and large early signature of Sandburg's, on one of his early titles. We had trouble identifying Clark, who was clearly a friend, but we had trouble reading the first part of his name. Lacks the dust jacket. This is the second state, with page 3 unnumbered. Uncommon signed, and desirable with this early and warm inscription. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Light brown vertically-ribbed cloth stamped in blue, with a decorative frame surrounding the front board title stamping. A solid VG copy (spine slightly darkened, with blue lettering a bit dull/minor extremity wear). Item #23310.1 Blatch the daughter of suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who followed in her mother's footsteps by also becoming a leader in the late 19th/early 20th C. women's movement, a writer and an advocate for labor reform. Blatch is credited with reviving & modernizing a suffrage movement which, by the beginning of the 20th century, was listless & flagging; she is also credited with motivating its evolution from a mostly middle & upper class movement to one which exhibited a concern for rights of working women, primarily by her 1907 launching of the Equality League of Self-Supporting Women which held open-air meetings & inaugurated the first suffrage parades. Blatch's style was radical in nature, combining a militant civil disobedience with political activism. The synergy generated her personal energy, daring & political savvy spurred the Suffrage movement on, aiding it in achieving its goal of enfranchising American women with the 1920 passage of the Constitution's 19th Amendment. With the coming of WWI, Blatch directed her formidable personality & energies to aiding the war effort, and this book was written in such a spirit- it describes the European female contribution … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Western Photographica]. [California]
[Southern California, 1918. 220 photographs, plus 16 more laid in, most approximately 3 x 4 inches. Oblong octavo. Original black cloth, string-tied. Light wear, images clean. An interesting and extensive photo album of snapshots of life in the Los Angeles area in the 1910s, containing over 200 original images. The photographer, identified in a self-portrait labeled as "me," was a young woman, and the album appears to chronicle her family and friends on their travels in the rural areas outside the city. There are photos of houses (many which seem to be newly-built), the countryside with freshly-planted orchards, many photos of automobiles, desert and canyon scenery, images of farmyards with livestock, and more. A series of at least six images features apparent earthquake damage, showing crumbling houses and scattered possessions. A nice document of rural life in Southern California, and of the areas around Los Angeles prior to extensive development.

Hi, This lot is an Original 1918 Hardback Wisden . It is in Excellent condition. In fact it is as good as my own. The front and spine gilt is excellent and the boards are very good, there are a couple of marks to the boards and a line towards the edge of the rear board. The pastedowns are great and very yellow , on the right hand side there is a name HD Swan in ink and a slight rectangular fade above the 1918. The hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Guitry, Sacha
1918. Manuscript in ink with pictorial cover of a mime, possibly by Guitry, signed twice by Guitry, but the bulk of the text almost certainly prepared by a professional copyist, with dozens of corrections, pencil notes, additional dialog, etc, likely by Guitry. The working copy for Edmond Roze, a theatrical impresario, producer and director, who staged this at his Roze's Theatre de Vaudeville in 1918. Enclosed is a sheet of blue paper, 'Infinitment merci, Sacha Guitry' and a pasted in long telegram from Marseille, Guitry to Roze, advising him that he is stuck in Marseille but that the play must go on without him, etc. Ca. 150 pp, bound in half red cloth and marbled boards. Guitry was a notable playwright and actor, who then went on to an equally notable career in the cinema. This play is about a mime in the 1830s who falls in love. It was later redone as a movie in 1950, with Guitry as director. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
