LORENTZ, Hendrik Antoon (chairman).
Report of the so-called "Staatscommissie Zuiderzee", active from 1918 to 1926, on the consequences of the building of a 30 km long dyke (the afsluitdijk) that was going to close off the Zuiderzee, and turn it into a lake. The afsluitdijk should decrease the risk of floods in the area around the Zuiderzee, which occurred regularly. "But by closing off the Zuiderzee, the tidal movement in the Waddenzee, to the North of the Zuiderzee, would intensify and this might severely increase the risk of floods in that area. By how much would one have to raise the dikes along the Waddenzee once the Zuiderzee would no longer be able to absorb the high tide? Estimates ranged from 15 centimeters to 4 meters. A task force was appointed, headed by Lorentz, to investigate this problem" (ilorentz.org).Slightly browned, otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities.

Pictorial News Co., [Long Island, N.Y.?], 1918. Panoramic photograph, 11 x 39 3/4 inches, with title caption, publisher, and "No. 233" written in negative in lower part of the image. With two-page "Duty Roster" in envelope on verso. Framed. Wear to frame, minor water damage to left margin of photo, slight creases along upper margin, small scrape to center-right of photo. "Duty Roster" worn and chipped along several edges and with a few small holes (from previous hanging). Overall very good. A panoramic photo of the 13th Provisional Company, U.S. Army Air Service, a specialized training unit for aircraft mechanics. The photo features 112 soldiers in three rows (note the propeller insignia visible on several of the soldiers' sleeves, designating them as aviation mechanics). Four officers in campaign hats sit in the middle of the front row. The accompanying typed "Duty Roster" divides soldiers by "Sergeants," "Cooks," and "Privates," with tent and cot numbers added in manuscript. The officers are not included on the roster. The Air Service started as the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force in 1917, and then on May 24, 1918, merged with the the Aviation Section, Signal Corps of the U.S. Army to become the U.S. Army Air Service. The Air Service's early organization fluctuated substantially during World War I, with numerous units (like this one) formed temporarily and then disbanded, renamed, or merged with other units. There is no record of this unit in the ORDER OF BATTLE OF THE UNITED STATES LAND FORCES IN THE WORLD WAR., although extrapolating from personnel recor … [Click Below for Full Description]

African-American Photographica]
[N.p, 1918. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph, 9 1/2 x 49 1/2 inches. Minor silvering, else very good. Framed. [with:] CAMP OF THE 25th U.S. INFANTRY ON DUTY ON MEXICAN BORDER, 5.12.'19 [caption title]. San Diego: Tunnell & Sansiper, [ca. 1919]. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph, 9 1/2 x 50 1/2 inches. Very good. Framed. An interesting pair of large-format panoramic photographic collages featuring the Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th United States Infantry in training in Arizona just after World War I. The great majority of the Buffalo Soldiers were stationed in reserve in Hawaii during the First World War, but some Buffalo Soldiers were sent to Mexico to participate in the Punitive Expedition and later to Nogales to guard the Mexican border in southern Arizona during the waning years of Pancho Villa's Mexican Revolution. Buffalo Soldiers of the 35th Infantry Regiment were embroiled in the Battle of Ambos Nogales in August 1918, after which the 35th Regiment was replaced by the men seen in the present panoramic photographs - the 25th Infantry regiment. The first of the present panoramas features the sprawling camp of the 25th Infantry from an elevated vantage point in Nogales, showing dozens of buildings in the foreground, with the vast Arizona desert in the background. Below this is an equally-long image of a "Grand Review" of the hundreds of African- American soldiers who make up the unit. A photograph at left captures the activities of four African-American soldiers comprising the unit's color guard; a photograph at right shows presumably the unit's Caucasian commander a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cattle Protection Board of California
San Francisco, 1918. Very good.. 355,[1]pp. Narrow octavo. Original red cloth, front board lettered in black. Moderate wear at spine extremities and corners; front hinge loosening. Light tanning. This book was published under the provisions of the Hide and Brand Law, sponsored by the cattlemen of California, in an attempt to "protect breeders and growers of cattle from theft..." and allow for registrations and other protections. For two years it was administered by the Cattle Protection Board, established in 1917 and then abolished in 1919. Cattle Protection Service thereafter became a part of the Department of Food & Agriculture. This manual contains thousands of registered brands and ear marks, with an extensive index. It also prints the relevant sections of the Hide and Brand Law, with its own index and synopsis, and a list of licensed cattle slaughterers organized by county. A fascinating compendium for the early 20th-century California cattle business. Adams, Rampaging Herd 396.

Reimers, A.W.
[San Francisco, 1918. Very good.. [152]pp. Original three-ring notebook, plain black leatherette covers. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on front and rear cloth pastedowns. Very light wear to boards; light wear to leaves at hole punches. Light tanning and dust soiling internally. A detailed manuscript journal of medical notes compiled by Navy Corpsman Adolf William Reimers, who was stationed on Goat Island in San Francisco at the end of World War I and during the height of the "Spanish Flu" epidemic in the United States. Reimers came to the West Coast from Hailey, Idaho, where he was a painter and outdoorsman, and his notes are copious, highly legible, and occasionally accompanied by his own sketches. Dates are scattered throughout, the earliest being July 2, 1918 (though the first entries are likely slightly earlier), and the latest from December of that year. Reimers was discharged from duty in February 1919, and returned to rural Idaho where he lived the rest of his life. Reimers' notes are almost entirely technical, apparently primarily serving as reference from the medical education he received during his training. Topics include sanitation and disinfecting procedures; nursing practices; bacteriology; blood and urine analysis; and a variety of pharmacological recipes for everything from morphine and cocaine to atropine and wine of antimony. During October 1918, the midst of Reimers' service, San Francisco had 4,000 flu cases, and before the epidemic subsided over 45,000 cases and 3,000 deaths had been reported, affecting nearly one tenth of the city's popul … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAMILTON, Robert Edward Archibald.
[No place: for the Author, c.1918]. [No place: for the Author,, c.1918]. Small folio, pp. [ii], 30 (paper watermarked "Original Cream Laid Kent"). Contemporary pale green buckram. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Illustration in the text at p. 3 (small line drawing of an Arab well). Boards slightly bowed, a touch of wear to corners. A very good copy. First edition, privately printed and remarkably scarce: we have not been able to locate another copy in any institutional library, either in Britain and Ireland or internationally; only two copies have appeared at auction. The official version, which was printed for the British Government in May 1918, is of comparable scarcity: Copac cites only the copy in the India Office Records at the British Library. Hamilton provides an important first-person account of private talks with Abdulaziz, giving a vital insight into his plans for the Al Saud just 13 years before the unification of Saudi Arabia. Hamilton's description of his route through north-western Najd is also of great value. Robert Edward Archibald Hamilton (from 1934 Hamilton-Udny, 1871-1950), 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton (succeeded to the title 1920), was an Indian Army officer, before serving in Mesopotamia (1915-18) during the Great War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He is alluded to extensively by Philby in The Heart of Arabia (1922) and pictured in Arab garb, alongside Fahad of the Royal Bodyguard, photographed at Riyadh. Hamilton was Political Agent in Kuwait when he was chosen to be part of the British Mission to Ri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hendee
1918. This is a very well designed image using the visual appeal of the colorful and abundant produce to promote conservation on the part of the people on the home front. The message is bold and clear - Eat Less so that we can Send More to Europe or they will Starve. During the period of World War I there was an ongoing famine in many parts of Europe as a result of the protracted fighting and depleted labor force to serve the farms. In addition, soldiers were often malnourished as well. This graphic explicitly gets its message across by showing the domestic abundance of produce and declaring that we should all eat less to send the excess to Europe. The artist is A. Hendee , unfortunately little is known about him. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters. Width: 21.25 Height: 29

Burroughs, Edgar Rice
A. L. Burt, 1918. 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Very Good. The Son of Tarzan, inscribed by the author to his daughter. A very early printing, inscribed by Burroughs to his daughter Joan "With love to Joan from Papa, Tarzana Ranch, January, 1923." Famously, Burroughs did not have a first edition of Son of Tarzan, because supposedly it was stolen from him by a young relative who needed the money to support a sad habit. Joan was involved in producing the Tarzan movies, and in fact at one point was assigned to find someone who could play Tarzan in one of the movies. She selected a prominent actor named James Pierce, and later they were married. Very good in a very good dust jacket, housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. ADMIRALTY WAR STAFF INTELLIGENCE DIVISION.
ADMIRALTY WAR STAFF INTELLIGENCE DIVISION. Handbook of Mesopotamia. Volume I. General. Second Edition. [London], Admiralty War Staff, Intelligence Division, November, 1918.8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. 556; a very good and clean copy.Second, considerably enlarged edition (the first edition of 1916 had 360 pages). After Townshend's catastrophic defeat at Kut in April 1916 the Mesopotamia Commission of Inquiry was set up, and the Admiraly was convinced that only good intelligence about the available infastructure, man and animal power, as well as mineral and agricultural resources in still Ottoman Iraq was vital for a possible advance into these territories. These handbooks correct existing sources of information and maps, and analyze the country's physical and economic geography. Interesting in this considerably enlarged second edition is the much extended section on Oil and Bitumen. 'In the southern and central parts of this area there are extensive belts of country where the presence of oil is known or suspected' (p. 59).COPAC lists only three complete sets in British Libraries, at UCL, Nottingham University, and in the British Museum.#2106463

Jack London
Macm, illan. Fine. The Red One Jack London New York, The Macmillan Company, 1918. [with October, 1918 of the verso of the title page] Hardcover. 8vo. Original brown pictorial stamped boards, stamped in black, blue and on paper covered boards with stamping as shown. 193 pages with 4 pages of advertisements at the rear of the book. Frontispiece portrait of Jack London by Arnold Genthe. Jack London's only book published that was bound in paper-covered boards instead of cloth and is notorious for its fragility and is very rarely encountered with not having part of the spine missing or splits or cracks along the spine. Even with a dust jacket these cracks and splitting of the fragile spine are found. This book is in fine condition, and rare thus. I have had several of this title in the boring white (but rare and valuable and also very fragile dust jacket) over the years and this copy tops them. There is some shelf wear and "dusting" at the board edges but no wear through the paper or corners to the plain boards underneath, and this is extremely uncommon or even rare, I have shown this in the photos (use the enlargement feature), and what appears to be a split at the upper spine and back edge is not. It is a crease or crimping, either done at the binders or perhaps already in the paper or perhaps once long ago the book was dropped. The photo of this looks like a crack or tear but it is not. Also the photo emphasizes all this, in reality it is not obvious. See photo number six. If more photos are needed or any questions, contact me. 1918. Codice libreria 148984.

If you desire more photos or have questions please let me know. I'm happy to supply more photos and/or answer questions. ------ Patience Worth and Pearl Curran. One of the most famous pieces of self-declared 'psychically received fiction.' The vessel for the work was Pearl Curran, a St. Louis housewife of apparently limited education, who in 1913 began writing a series of highly detailed historical novels, which she said had been communicated to her by one Patience Worth, the spirit of a seventeenth century English-woman who had moved to America where she had eventually been slain by a native. Curran with Worth penned a number of novels, of which 'Hope Trueblood,' was perhaps the best-known. Most who interviewed Curran thought she would have been incapable of writing the detailed and stylistically varied works herself, but although skeptics remained suspicious of the ethereal Patience, no fraud was ever proved. More information from Wikipedia: Patience Worth was allegedly a spirit contacted by Pearl Lenore … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARUSO, Enrico 1873-1921
Postmarked New York, March 11[?], 1918. In black ink. With a colour photograph of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to verso. In Italian (with translation). Caruso sends his compliments to an aunt and uncle. "Congratulations to Aunt and Uncle Ceasi[?]. Greetings and thanks..." Somewhat worn, soiled and creased; remnants of adhesive to corners of verso. In a double-sided black paper mount. "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Quiroli was a singer, pedagogue, and husband of the famed soprano Adelina Agostinelli (1882-1954). Vincenzo Bellezza (1888-1964) studied at the Naples Conservatory and made his debut at the S Carlo with Aida in 1908. "A reliable and skilled conductor, he combined attention to detail with consideration for the singers, and achieved performances that were effective at the time ra … [Click Below for Full Description]
