Rote Fahne, Die (Hamburg).
Hamburg., Hamburger Buchdruckerei u. Verlagsanstalt Auer & Co. Paul Dittmann. 1 bzw. 2 Bl. Fol./Gr.Folio. LIEUTENANT MARC" [VILLARS, Jean Beraud]
Hachette, Paris. Small octavo, [x], 224, [4] pp., contemporary gilt lettered quarter green cloth, an attractive copy. Jean Beraud Villars (1893-1979) was born near Paris and educated in France, England, and Germany. An infantry volunteer in 1915, he was wounded several times before transferring to aviation at the beginning of 1916. He eventually was commander of a French escadrille before a serious wound ended his military flying. After the war he was a successful traveller, businessman, and writer of historical works including a biography of Lawrence of Arabia. Originally published under the nom de guerre "Lieutenant Marc" in 1918, the real author was identified in the 1970's as Jean Beraud Villars. The book was so critical of the French military and aircraft manufacturers who he alleged supplied inferior aircraft that Villars could not publish the book under his own name. This is the censored and redacted French first edition of the book. The translated book with notes, complete with the missing text, was published in 1975 by the translators Stanley Pincetl and Ernest Marchand under the title "Notes of a Lost Pilot". An important book with an interesting 50+ year history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Condition: A fine copy; the only copy of this Mora illustration that we've seen and no copy of this program located in OCLC; scarce thus. Single sheet folded program for San Francisco's Bohemian Club Spring House-Cleaning Jinks. Distinctive Jo Mora illustration on front cover. Lyrics by George Sterling. Among Bohemians, planned entertainment of any real magnitude is called a Jinks. This nomenclature extends from the earliest days of the Bohemian Club when its members were searching for precedents and traditions to adopt from the literature and entertainment of other times and other places. Club members performed in various types of Jinks: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, High, Low, Neophyte, to name a few, as well as the annual "Ladies' Jinks" held at the Club especially for spouses and invited guests. This Spring House-Cleaning Jinks on May 9, 1918, presented two plays - the opening performance titled "Brains" and the following on-act play "The Birth of a Notion" which included Jo Mora as one of the performers in the role of Love O'Liquor, the last remaining occupant of cell of Love. Millerton, N.Y.: Van D. Harvey, Quality Printing, 1918. Unbound. Very Good. Large decorated poster on paper. Measuring 24" x 38". Printed in black and red. Old folds and some wrinkling at the creases, small tears, not quite very good but a remarkable survivor nonetheless. Because of the large size and fairly thin paper, preservation would seem to be unlikely. Aside from the many other listed attractions are floats, fraternal and other societies, ice cream, sandwiches, speeches, sham battles and the like, the poster concludes with this poetic effort: "Litchfield is the County town, Canaan is quite sandy, Cornwall is a rocky town, But Sharon is the dandy." *OCLC* locates no copies.
