BROOKS, ELIZABETH
N.P.: Privately printed, n.d. (circa 1918-1921)., n.d. (circa 1918-1921). First edition. 12-1/2" x 16-1/2" large format purple scrapbook with the school seal stamped in gilt on the front, bound with a leather ribbon. 100pp. This scrapbook belongs to a student attending the Ethel Walker School for Girls. The student identified as Elizabeth Brooks of Cazenovia, NY on the scrapbook's title page, attended the school from 1918 until her graduation in 1921. The scrapbook contains material from all four years, including nearly 50 photographs. A remarkable record of the life of an upper class girl in early twentieth century America. The school was founded in 1911 in Lakewood, New Jersey, by Ethel Walker. Walker was a Bryn Mawr graduate whose vision of a changing world for women inspired her to create a school where young women would receive a rigorous preparation for college and create the foundation for lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity. In its first year the school's student body consisted of just 10 girls. The school quickly outgrew its first home and in 1917 moved to its present site on the former Phelps-Dodge estate in Simsbury, Connecticut. The scrapbook begins with a register containing the holograph ink signatures of approximately 60 of Elizabeth Brooks' classmates, many with inscriptions that are quite humorous. The bulk of signatures are dated March 3, 1919, with the origin of the scrapbook likely to be around that date. Following the register are monthly calendar pages dated for the 1920-21 academic term, with holograph notations on many of the days, giving a … [Click Below for Full Description]

IRVINE, Lynn M.
1918. Softcover. Good. Small stapled volume (cover title: "La Madelon. 25 Cartes-Lettres Pliees") of removable blank letter-writing paper on adhesive perforated stubs which has been used by an American soldier as a notebook devoted to the operation and construction of French-issued hand grenades in World War I. Well-worn, a few leaves loose or detached, the perforations slightly detached in places, chips on the wrappers, stapled oxidized, fair only, but fascinating, cohesive, and pleasing. Inside front cover has the owner's name of Lynn M. Irvine, as well as the names of three other American soldiers and a note that "Vathimenil is the place where we went to school." The notebook bears a couple of different dates in August, 1918. Vathimenil is in Northeastern France, and must have been very close to the front lines. The volume contains several pages of pencil notes about hand grenades, and of the most interest are six or seven relatively crude technical drawings of the grenades. The rear cover bears a self-portrait of the author studying a little book with pictures of hand grenades. The notebook also bears a few personal notes by Irvine about the towns where he was billeted and money that he received in April, 1918. Irvine (1889-1952) was a lawyer from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Military records show that he was gassed and wounded ("Slightly") during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in September of 1918.

Thank you for your detailed report. You have done everything splendidly I will write Liesch when I'm in Berlin, because I have no documentation here and can't answer his questions off-hand. John Wisden
This 1918 Wisden original hardback is in truly fine condition. The front and rear boards are immaculate and the gilt to the front board and spine is in really bright un-restored condition. The spine itself is in really tremendous condition. If you were being really picky the top and bottom of the spine are very very slightly bumped. The front and rear yellow pages are in as new condition and the front and rear hinges are immaculate. The contents are in almost as new condition. Once again a tremendous copy. We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the 1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition. Please keep a look out for them. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BROWN, William Cheney, Jr.
Hartford, Connecticut / Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1918. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 71 letters written between William Cheney Brown, Jr. and his family members between 1902 and 1918. Brown served as a War Department Chief of Staff in Washington, DC during World War I. Most letters are near fine, some have very light tidemarks. Also included are postcards, dried plants, and a small piece of animal hide. Correspondence to and from William Cheney Brown, Jr. and his family members living in Hartford, Connecticut before and during WWI. During his service Brown was War Department Chief of the Embarkation Service. Most of the letters center on Brown's time towards the end of the war. He writes to his parents, his younger sister Rachel, and his wife Mary, usually about his advancement in the War Department or about how much he misses them: "It won't be long...Don't grow up too fast without me." Brown focuses on his uncertainty about the end of the war stating, "What do you think of this peace business? Man woke me up this morning reading the headline that Germany has acceded to any demand." Often these letters continue with Brown's worry about the war not actually ending or a compromise being unreachable. In 1918 he writes home to his father about a possibility for a peace treaty: "I was actually shocked - perhaps more than usual...I could scarcely believe it." Brown's earlier letters are from his time at Harvard University. He entered law school and was president of the *Harvard Law Review* while there. Brown completed his degree in 1917 before entering the service. H … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEWIS, C. S.]; [GALSWORTHY, John (Editor)]
His Majesty's Stationery Office -1919. Three volumes, comprising the complete run. 8vo. Original blue paper wrappers. Advertisments bound to the rear of each volume. A very good example of an ephemeral production, with small chips to spine ends and lightly worn joints. Colour frontispiece by Max Beerbohm to each volume, numerous further colour, photographic and black and white plates by Jean de Bosschere, William Nicholson and others. Reveille was the late- and post-war continuation of a journal begun in 1917 titled Recalled To Life and aimed at the war-disabled. Edited by John Galsworthy it published literary works and illustrations from Joseph Conrad, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, Edith Wharton, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy and J. M. Barrie, as well as pieces on the more practical aspects on the rehabilitation of disabled soldiers. Reveille is also the first magazine to publish work by C. S. Lewis, whose poem 'Death In Battle' was published under the pseudonym of Clive Hamilton - annexing his first name and his mother's maiden name. As it was submitted while he was still in the army, Lewis was hoping to avoid "either officers or men to talk about 'our b—y lyrical poet again' whenever I make a mistake." (LP VI: 36-7) During his wartime service, Lewis had, in his own words, "amused myself by writing verses, and a pocket book collection of these followed me through France. Since my return I have occupied myself in revising these. and trying to publish them." (LP VI:20-1) On 9th September 1918 Lewis received word that Heinemann had accepted his typescript titled 'Spirits … [Click Below for Full Description]

TADINI - SANTUCCI Luigi
Plain Wrapper Press, Press Book, 1918.
