        [Manuscript Journal]: Carter, recently graduated from Yale, awaits his posting to the Embassy in Rome, and records his activities and adventures in Washington, D.C. in the Summer of 1918

      Folio journal. Half red leather gilt and cloth. 200pp. Carter's ownership name, edgewear on the boards, else near fine. Of the 200 blank lined pages, Carter has used 79 pages written in a clear and legible hand, comprising approximately 28,000 words, consisting of almost daily or every other day entries between June 24 and September 17, 1918, plus three additional entries to finish out the calendar year.John Franklin Carter (1897--1967) was born in Fall River, Massachusetts into a large family. He attended Yale University and went into the diplomatic service. His later career included work as a correspondent for The New York Times and London Daily Chronicle. He also wrote a syndicated column called "We, The People," under his pseudonym "Jay Franklin" and worked in both the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. He was the author of several books of history, and wrote mysteries under the pen name "Diplomat."Carter inscribes his name and two addresses in the front of the journal: "Williamstown, Massachusetts and the American Embassy in Rome." Carter uses the bulk of the journal (54 pp.) to describe his summer in Washington DC, following his graduation from Yale. He keeps frequent company with some of his fellow classmates, including Thornton Wilder, Stephen Vincent Benet, and William Rose Benet. The journal is liberally interspersed with original poetry by Carter.Beginning in June, while working as a cipher clerk at the State Department in Washington, he commences the journal: "I intend... to keep a species of record of myself. It is in no way a diary, a bald emasculated time table of doings and journeyings, nor is it one of those awfully intimate soul-revelations, generally revealing nothing but dalliance with the lewd and half-hearted lusts. This book will, I hope, be a record of me and of my thoughts. Therefore whatever account I may give of my life will be in reality an invertebrate symposium of loose -- probably in both senses -- thoughts and whimsicalities... ."21 years old, and just finished with college, he is cursed with the nearsightedness which prevents him from joining the military with his friends. Instead, he awaits permission from the draft board to sail to his embassy post in Rome for the duration of the war, but is caught in red tape. "I am a young man, alone in a large city, on an ample salary, with two gay comrades, Bill Taylor & Thornton Wilder, and appetites. I like liquor in its more intellectual [basis?] and tobacco." He spends the summer arguing with the draft board, retaking his draft physical, and carousing with his friends who include not only Wilder and Taylor, but Stephen and William Benet. They go to the theater, or spend the evenings drinking and philosophizing. One particular evening Carter records: "Thornton, who knows everything about everything, was much shocked at our discussing mysticism... He withdrew and hummed indifferently until the topic changed."Carter also includes many of his attempts at writing poetry, some of which he shows to Wilder who does not think much of it. The crew bumps into Monty Woolley at the Shoreham, who had become a lieutenant in Army Intelligence (Woolley, later a well-known actor, was also a Yale graduate). Finally, in late July, he gets permission to obtain his passport. He attends a swimming party at William C. Bullitt's (another Yale graduate and later Ambassador to Russia) in McLean, Virginia. Carter comments: "Mrs. Bullitt is a bit hard, affected, head-turned, and insincere. I would not trust Bill Bullitt around the corner with a nickel but they are nice hosts."By early August, as he is preparing to depart for Rome, and parting with his friend Steve [Benet], they compose a "Last Song of Dear Old Yale" [which is transcribed in the journal]. Carter's ocean voyage to his new post, aboard the S.S. Rochambeau is recorded by him in the form of a letter to his mother, copied into the journal. He describes sighting submarines and whales, comments on fellow passengers, says the troops on board that he initially thought were Czecho-Slovak are actually Poles. "There is a funny crowd aboard her. A considerable number of soldiers and officers, oodles of YMCA & K of C men, lots of YMCA girls, all over draft age, & Red Cross nurses galore. Spaniards, South Americans, French & Italians. Plenty of Americans, all traveling on government business."With a bit of self-importance he tells his mother she can make his letters from "overseas service" available to the Yale Lit for publication since "the poor old magazine will be pretty hard up for material this next year." The S.S. Rochambeau arrived in Bordeaux on August 19, and by September 5, Carter was settled into his post in Rome: "Well, this begins my diary again and hereafter I hope to make my entries oh very faithfully..." He does record his early observations of the city for a short time, but on November 11 armistice is declared. The final entry in mid-December says he has been working on a memorandum on the Balkans for the Ambassador who is on his way to Paris to persuade President Wilson to return with him for a visit to Italy: "We of the Embassy alone know how much depends on this expedition. If Wilson does not come to Italy -- it will be an outrage to national pride, international courtesy, and elemental justice..." as Italy was as instrumental in winning the war as France. The young and restless Carter has begun to take life a bit more seriously. His last note in the journal says: "I am becoming very serious, my mustache is assuming proportions -- I shall be ruined for all purposes of ordinary social intercourse very shortly."During FDR's administration, Carter and Roosevelt became good friends and allies, and Carter expressed his concern for the need of a better intelligence gathering system within the White House. According to Joseph E. Persico, the author of Roosevelt's Secret War (2001): "Carter made his pitch to the President for the informal White House intelligence ring and found FDR receptive... The man (Carter) seemed to know everybody - officials, diplomats, the entire press corps domestic and foreign, and corporate executives all over the globe. He also had access to the National Broadcasting Company's worldwide shortwave network. And FDR grasped that Carter's profession offered the perfect cover for delivering intelligence, a Washington journalist coming to the White House occasionally to interview the President." Carter had become a "very serious" man indeed.An engaging and insightful journal from a thoughtful young man whose friends and acquaintances spanned both the literary and political world. .

        Theatre des Enfants

      Industrias graficas Seix I Barral 1918 - This is the French issue of one of the earliest and most luxurious toy theaters produced by the famous Seix I Barral publishers of Barcelona. Complete with the elaborate proscenium and the folding rigging which supported the scenes for the various plays. Preserved in the original box with instructions on the underside of the lid. Box and lid with some wear. A fine example. With: Le Triomphe de la Bonté, La Madre, and El Mercader de Venecia. Barcelona: I.G. Seix & Barral, various dates. Three of the plays produced for use with Theatre des Enfants. The first in French, the latter two in Spanish. Complete with all the characters, scripts and scenery for the production of each of these plays, each contained in the original folding envelope (the two titles in Spanish sometime corrected to accurately reflect the contents by the application of a revised title). Rarely found complete. The set: theater and three plays: $7,500 Industrias graficas Seix I Barral, the major children's theater producers of the early twentieth century, issued their first theater in 1915. The current example was produced in 1918 and is the most elaborate theater produced by the company. The individual plays were sold separately from the theaters. At the time of the production of this theater, there were only three plays available, one of which, Le Triomphe de la Bonté, is included with this set. In the information printed on the underside of the lid to the box of this theater, the publishers announce that more plays are in production. In fact, the company would, over the next 38 years, issue a total of 23 plays, each of which could be shown in any of their theaters. The publishers were known for their beautiful, detailed and elaborate sets. Each play consisted of two booklets containing a list of the characters and the script, the scenery to be used for each act, and a color printed card containing the characters to be cut out and used in the play. These were all contained in a folding envelope which had instructions for how to set up the play printed on the rear flap. The plays were produced in Spanish, French and English, and were celebrated all over Europe.

Familie Uhlmann. Sie war zunächst Schülerin von Ad. Meyer in Berlin. 1913 zog sie nach Stuttgart und war dort Meisterschülerin von Adolf Hölzel. Ihr Stuttgarter Haus wurde nach 1919 zu einem Treffpunkt der Avantgarde. "Die Bilder wirken wie aus Buntpapierstücken zusammengesetzt und erzielen ihre Wirkung durch geometrisierte, farbenfrohe großflächige Formen. Auffallend ist das Bemühen der Illustratorin um geschlossene, durchgearbeitete Bildkompositionen. Sie gliedert die Flächen häufig in zwei oder drei farbig unterschiedliche Grundflächen und verzahnt diese dann durch kleinere, meist figürliche Elemente. Contains three poems by Pepler, beginning with "Transeamus usque Bethlehem." This copy is inscribed by Gill on the bottom of the title page: "Francis & Frances Cornford, from E & E Gill. Xmas 1918." Frances Cornford was the granddaughter of Charles Darwin and cousin to Gwen Raverat, and both she and her botanist husband were part of Gill's social and intellectual circle.       Dayton, Ohio 1918 - Signed "Orville Wright and Charles E. Taylor" in black ink. This check is dated May 18, 1918 and is payable to Chas. Taylor and signed by aviation pioneer Orville Wright. Check has been endorsed on the back by the payee and signed C. E. Taylor. Charles Taylor built the first aircraft engine used by the Wright brothers and was a vital contributor of mechanical skills in the building and maintaining of early Wright engines and airplanes Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1871, Orville Wright and his elder brother, Wilbur Wright, were the inventors of the world's first successful airplane. The brothers successfully conducted the first free, controlled flight of a power-driven airplane on December 17, 1903. They subsequently became successful businessmen, filling contracts for airplanes in both Europe and the United States. Today, the Wright brothers are considered the "fathers of modern aviation." Orville is also known for developing technology for the U.S. Army. He died in Dayton on January 30, 1948. Charles E. Taylor, born May 24, 1868 on a farm in Illinois, was involved in many historical events related to the growth of aviation. He was involved in the first powered flight, was the first airport manager, helped build the first military plane, was involved in the first transcontinental flight, was inducted into the USAF Museum Aviation Hall of Fame as the first airplane mechanic, and the FAA named a lifetime maintenance award after him.       1918. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1918 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. This is a fabulous book, the only downside and this is being very picky is a bookplate has been removed from the front left page. You probably wouldn't notice but I have to point it out. The front board is superb, hardly a mark and bright gilt,the spine cloth is excellent with bright gilt, it really is a top book. Super rear board too. Excellent, original hinges, and very clean inside just an ex owners name to the front right pastedown. If being picky there is a slight bobbling to front board cloth and inside a sort of corrigated iron appearance for a couple of pages. A wisden to own and brag about. Average 1918s are appearing on line at 5k , no need to pay that much. Please see the large photographs. More photographs available on request.

Born Frederic Louis Sauser in Neuchatel, Switzerland, he became a naturalized French citizen, adopted the nom de plume Blaise Cendrars, and lost his right arm on The Western Front in 1916. Returning to Paris, he subsequently achieved great acclaim as a poet, memoirist, and art critic. "J'ai Tué" represents Leger's first Livre D'Artiste, and the only one illustrated in the Cubist style. A bright, well-preserved example with strong colors of the exceedingly uncommon 1918 La Belle Edition first printing (cited on page 299 of Lawrence Saphire's "Fernand Leger: The Complete Graphic Work") from the standard edition of three hundred NUMBERED (118/327) copies on "papier a la forme" at the Paris presses of Francois Bernouard showing a bit of minor wear and handling along with a short closed tear to the foredge of the front cover.       Poona [India]: Loyal Press, 1918. Old fold lines; light soiling and wear. Very good. Broadside poem printed in Poona, India around the end of the First World War. The Mesopotamian campaign was fought in Iraq, primarily by British and Indian troops against the Turkish empire. The British had a vested interest in the oil of the region and were set on protecting refineries, etc. The poem specifically mentions the Battle of Kut, to that time the scene of the worst British defeat in the entire history of the British Army. The poem was clearly written by a survivor of the campaign, if not that particular battle. It is possible that the poem is also a nod to Kipling's 1917 poem, "Mesopotamia," which also commemorated the bloody fight in that region. The poem, which is headed with the line, "To be carried in the hand by every soldier on arrival in England from Mesopotamia," describes the madness and malady borne by soldiers upon return from the misery of that campaign. A section of the poem reads: "If I should do things that seem senseless to you, / You'll find there's a method in all this I do. / I'm a marvel at catching Flies Fever and Flu. / They teach it in Mesopotamia. ...And if in the strand I'm found charging a bus. / Or otherwise making a damnable fuss. / If I'm squashed or smashed up don't stand by & cuss. / A mad man from Mesopotamia. ...Take me up tenderly treat me with care. / I'm one of a crowd England sent over there. / To line in a desert for years trying to scare. / Some Turks out of Mesopotamia. ...And if when I die I'm sent for a spell / To some place where stained souls are made clean and well, / Pray to Peter in mercy to send me to Hell, / But not back to Mesopotamia."       Vienna, 5 October 1918 - 2 pages, 4to. In violet ink, filing holes, verso of second page annotated in pencil "Egon Schieles Briefe an Papa" and with a draft of a letter in a later, unidentified hand. Printed letterhead. Schiele writes to his friend the painter Anton Kolig in Carinthia less than a mongh before his death. One of Schiele’s last letters, not published in Nebehay, who does however refer to Kolig’s reply, written on 8 October (see Nebehay, no. 1742).Schiele here expresses his appreciation of the drawing which Kolig had sent him, which he wants to reproduce and sell himself if need be. He hopes that Kolig has received his telegram regarding the exhibition of his nude at Lanyi's in Klagenfurt, and states that he is also sending a copy of his reply to Dr Schneider, which he asks Kolig to sign and return as soon as possible. His view is that they must decline Dr Schneider's request as they have too much else inprospect.He informs his friend that things are going well with the Hagenbund (a group of artists who were not part of the exclusive Secession group) and that there is talk of setting up an independent group called the Sonderbund (this plan never came to fruition because of Schiele's death). He also tells Kolig that the Wiesbaden exhibition will not be going ahead at present because of the political situation and suggests that they approach the Secession instead with some portraits.

      1918 - [a handsome copy] With Illustrations by W. T. Benda. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1918. Original brown cloth lettered in light orange. First Edition, first printing (with the date on the FRONT of the title leaf), first state (with the illustrations on coated paper, rather than on text paper). This was Cather's second great novel of immigrant life on the Nebraska frontier, following O PIONEERS! of 1913. It tells of a Bohemian immigrant girl's life there, and of the pioneer strength that carries her through numerous adversities. Cather took a major role in the production of this book, choosing the illustrator and negotiating with Houghton Mifflin regarding many aspects of the book (especially the advertising budget, which HMC would not increase above $300.00!). She was particularly upset when she learned that HMC had ordered the illustrations printed on coated plate paper; she insisted that they be on regular text paper (though individually inserted), so some of the 3,000 copies of the first printing are in that later state (but not this one).~This is an attractive copy, just about fine (a hint of rubbing at the corners, a very short tear in the front free endpaper). The Friars and the Lambs, two organizations operating at the time of the War (and still today), participated in fundraising contests for the United War Work Campaign or UWWR. That 1918 campaign was charged with raising $170,000,000 to help demobilize the army and maintain morale in the final few years of the war. The campaign was a success, and was at the time recognized as the largest fundraising event in history. This poster is a wonderful vestige that illustrates the willingness of all different organizations to demonstrate their devotion to the nation's troops. It is in very good condition, and is creased at the folds as issued. Scarce.

The widely publicized War Work Campaign began, by coincidence, on the day the German's surrendered. The artist attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League. She was a member of the Algonguin Round Table. This is one of just a handful of WWI posters designed by women. Linen-backed. Small area of restoration, just affecting image, in lower left corner. Minor loss in a few places in the margins, else a bright copy of this iconic World War I poster.

Catalogue of 570 exquisite works of European white glazes (mostly English - a large number of Leeds and salt glaze pieces - with some Italian and French; as well as both Chinese white and other Chinese porcelains; color plates show images of Chinese works in green, red, and violet), sold at auction on January 3, 4, and 5, 1918. With a brief introductory essay, A Note of White, by Dana H. Carroll. Carroll was a well-known cataloguer of collections of Asian works of art and compiled catalogues of the collections of Louis C. Tiffany, Charles Freer, and for many of New York's top auction houses, including Yamanaka & Company. Each of the items in this catalogue is well-annotated, and the color plates are exquisitely rich and in excellent condition. A valuable resource for any collector of European and/or Chinese glazes.

        [Photo Album]: Section 520 U.S. Army Ambulance Service Served in the World War. Saw Active Service in Italy, France, Belgium, Luxumberg[sic], Germany

      1918-1919. Oblong octavo. Cord-tied flexible cloth boards with "Photographs" stamped in blind on front board. A total of 292 gelatin silver images with 277 mounted between four and nine to a page, plus 15 loose prints, all measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 7" x 5". Most images are well-captioned in white album ink. First leaf is detached, modest wear, some fading to some images, very good or better. Newspaper clipping laid in about the experiences of Charles D. Hallman of Allentown, Pennsylvania in the Ambulance Service, that extensively quotes from his letters to his parents about his unit's journey by road in their ambulances across the Alps from Italy into France.The album commences with a group photo of the unit at Fort Dix in New Jersey, with the names of the each man in the unit noted. After a few images of training camp (in gas masks, in tents, being inoculated, etc.), a parade, a shipboard boxing match, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the coast of Spain, the location swiftly shifts to Camp "Lido" in Genova, Italy with many well-captioned images of the beach, the city, ambulances, and the camp. There are many photos of various members of the unit posing and well-identified, of ships and submarines, of the English convalescent camp, and several of their journey over the Alps. Once they reach France, mostly near the Meuse River and Argonne Forest, the scenes become more military: posing in shell holes, ambulances and planes destroyed by German fire, landscapes decimated by artillery, German bombs exploding, airplanes on patrol over the hospital, observations balloons, cemeteries, captured guns and pillboxes, barbed wire, and no-man's land.A splendid album concentrated almost exclusively on the experiences of a soldier in the Ambulance Service. .

Jedes Blatt von |Fingesten signiert| und einige auch von ihm eigenhändig betitelt. Fingesten schuf nur wenige erotische Mappenwerke, die alle von grösster Seltenheit sind. Twelve original etchings (sizes vary considerably, from 18 x 18 cm to 5 x 5 cm, but are printed on uniform 25 x 31 cm sheets, with each sheet then tipped to a larger sheet), the whole laid loose into a vellum-backed marbled board folder, with printed pictorial label (14.5 x 14cm) mounted on upper board. Boards edgeworn, vellum darkened, with small chip at crown of spine, a few of the mounting sheets have small nicks at the edges, but the etchings are in fine state. One of twenty copies of this rare portfolio of erotically charged etchings by Fingesten, with each etching signed and some titled in pencil in the margin by the artist, and with the first etching, which incorporates the title, numbered in the margin as well. According to the caption on the title label of the portfolio, the etched plates were destroyed after this edition was printed. A pictorial label (8 x 7.5 cm) resembling a bookplate, bearing both Fingesten's name and that of publisher Alf. Hoennicke, appears in the corner of the front pastedown of the portfolio, suggesting that either this was Hoennicke's copy, or that he may have had a hand in the genesis of this "private" edition.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1918 - 1918 Original Hardback Wisden Very Good Condition 9/10

      1918. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1918 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. This is a fabulous book, the only downside and this is being very picky is a bookplate has been removed from the front left page. You probably wouldn't notice but I have to point it out. The front board is superb, hardly a mark and bright gilt,the spine cloth is excellent with bright gilt, it really is a top book. Super rear board too. Excellent, original hinges, and very clean inside just an ex owners name to the front right pastedown. If being picky there is a slight bobbling to front board cloth and inside a sort of corrigated iron appearance for a couple of pages. A wisden to own and brag about. Average 1918s are appearing on line at 5k , no need to pay that much.
