Report of the Director of the National Parks Service to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1918

Government Printing Office, Washington DC 1918 - Emerson Hough (1857-1923) was an author who specialized in stories of the American West. In the 1890s he made his first trip to Yellowstone and advocated for anti-poaching laws that applied to National Parks. A longtime supporter of National Parks, and a very vocal proponent of the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, it is likely that this was presented to Emerson by National Park Service Director Stephen Mather in appreciation for his ongoing National Park Service Support. 284 pp. 8vo. Pebbled brown leather cover with gold embossed titling to cover and "Mr. Emerson Hough" embossed at lower right corner of front cover, light scuffing overall. Marbled endpapers. Quite clean within. A very good copy in the ORIGINAL PRINTED GLASSINE ADVERTISING RUNNER, 420 x 85 mm (16½" x 3 1/3") unfolded size, strip missing at top of rear inner flap with loss of 'Ideal Little Books' and part of 'Shelf' (should read: ?The Ideal Case For Ideal Little Books/Peter Rabbit?s Book Shelf?), part of 1 line address of Warne missing also at lower edge of front flap, two 10 mm pieces missing on spine which is unprinted, few tiny chips and short closed tear to top edge, narrow strip missing at lower edge of upper panel, just affecting last line of text but still easily readable. Quinby (page 90) describes a ?Glazed paper advertising runner? which is the same size as ours and whose text is identical to ours except for the front panel which reads ?New Volume For 1918?/The Tale of Johnny Townmouse?, whereas ours announces: 'The Latest Volume/The Tale of Johnny Townmouse'. The runner is very scarce, (no copy with the ?advertising runner? in the Frohnsdorff collection). The front flap lists 3 Potter titles and 2 Painting Books, the rear flap lists the Bookshelf and Peter Rabbit's Slippers. 30,000 copies of the first printing of this title were published and the first copies off the press lack the ?N? on London on the title page, in this copy the ?N? is present but the inscription ?Xmas 1918? indicates a first printing as the second printing did not appear until June 1919.         Tarr.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1918. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front cover gilt, top edge red. Spine slightly faded, a little rubbing to extremities, a couple of faint spots to contents. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Ezra Pound, with the kind regards of John Quinn. New York, June 29, 1918," with Pound's address, 5 Holland Place Chambers, Kensington. W., blindstamped to the first blank; with the ownership signature of Agnes Bedford to the front free endpaper and first blank; and inscribed by the author to Agnes Bedford on the first blank: "To my dear Agg, from W. L. Dec. 1927." This is a superb association copy, representing a perfect nexus of three mainstays of modernism. John Quinn, a wealthy Irish-American lawyer, was notable for his highly influential patronage of leading figures in British modernism. He was patron and lawyer for the New York magazine, The Little Review, which was edited by Pound, and which was suppressed in November 1917 for running a controversial piece by Wyndham Lewis. Through Quinn's patronage, Pound also obtained an editorial position with London literary magazine, The Egoist, in which Tarr was originally serialised between 1916 and 1917 (though the book was first published in the US, not the UK, hence the gift from Quinn). This copy most likely came into the possession of Pound's close friend Agnes Bedford when she inherited Pound's London apartment and most of his possessions after he departed to Paris with Dorothy in 1921. Bedford, a musician, visited Paris to collaborate with Pound on his opera La Testament de Villon, and also arranged the music for his Five Troubadour Songs. It was Pound who introduced Bedford to Wyndham Lewis. She became Lewis's lover in the 1920s, during which time he inscribed this copy of his first published book to her. Lewis's biographer Jeffrey Meyers speculates that "both Lewis and Pound carried on somewhat briefly with Agnes Bedford", as had happened previously with another woman, though the evidence in this case is "purely circumstantial".

Two early Army Air Service relics, owned by Douglas MacArthur's closest aide, Courtney Whitney

[Washington, D.C.], c. 1918 - 1925. various. "A most unusual pair of artifacts related to the early career of Courtney Whitney (1897-1969) who is best known today as Douglas MacArthur's closest and most loyal aide, and one of the authors of the postwar Japanese Constitution. The first piece is the core of an early airplane's wooden propeller, 19"" x 7.5"" x 4"", with the center rotor plate adorned with the Army Air Service's 'Prop and Wings' emblem and the initials ""U.S."" Offered together with a pair of aviator's goggles which have been adhered to a cloth flight 'helmet' due to an accident involving Lieutenant Courtney Whitney. Both pieces bear the expected wear associated with age, but are in surprisingly good condition.Whitney's early military experience was with the Army Air Service at Bolling Field in Washington, one of the earliest military aviation facilities in the United States serving the Army Air Service—the predecessor of the Army Air Corps. Whitney, who served as a pursuit pilot at the base, was involved in an accident involving his plane which apparently caught on fire. Safely exiting the plane, Whitney pulled off his goggles, the rubber lining of which melted in the heat of the fire. Offered with a letter of provenance from a Whitney family member. "

Arab Types". Album of Arabian portrait photographs.

Syria, c. 1918. - 8vo. 15 black and white photographs captioned in white, plus one repeat in a smaller print. Original board album, acquired from "M. Arthur, Beyrouth". Paper label to upper cover: "Arab Types. Syria". Small but fascinating collection of portrait photographs showing Arabian nobles as well as commoners, all captioned and the subject often identified by name and tribe. The photos, many of which are executed as highly expressive profile studies, were taken and assembled by Lt. Col. Walter Francis Stirling (1880-1958), Chief of Staff to T. E. Lawrence. While the present photographs were taken during his time with Lawrence, whom Stirling revered, it is not his British comrades but rather the striking features of the sheikhs and bedouins on which this collection is focused. Among the images are "Sheik Gawaileh of Nejd, one of Lawrence's Bodyguard", and "Sheikh Hamondi, Friend of Lawrence"; others are more ominously identified as "Yezidi Shepherd, Devil worshipper" or "Bad type of Hadadiyim Tribesman". Of many noble tribesmen here depicted, such as Fauraz ibn Sha'laan, Emir of the Ruwalla, or Sheikh Daham al-Hadi, Paramount Sheikh of the Shammar tribe, these probably constitute the only photographic record. - Stirling was trained at Sandhurst and served in the Transvaal operation during the Boer War before being seconded to the Egyptian Army in 1906. He spent five years patrolling with an Arab battalion on the Eritrean and Abyssinian borders. Throughout WWI he served at Gallipoli and the Palastinian campaign until he was appointed chief staff officer to Lawrence of Arabia, who called him "Stirling the imperturbable". In 1937, Stirling would reflect on his famous wartime comrade: "From then [early 1918] throughout the final phase of the Arab revolt on till the capture of Damascus, I worked, travelled, and fought alongside Lawrence [.] We sensed that we were serving with a man immeasurably our superior [.] In my considered opinion, Lawrence was the greatest genius whom England has produced in the last two centuries [.] If ever a genius, a scholar, an artist, and an imp of Shaitan were rolled into one personality, it was Lawrence." In 1919 Stirling became advisor to Emir Feisal and Deputy Political Officer in Cairo, then acting governor of Sinai and Governor of the Jaffa district in Palestine before moving to Albania in 1923 to take up a position advising and assisting in the reorganisation of the Albanian Ministry of the Interior.

World War One America Soldier's Trench Diaries and Papers

France, 1918. Diary. Very Good. Exceptional two-volume journal (about 125 pages) kept by an Infantry Officer in the 7th Division during World War One. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. The 7th Division, the last Regular Army division to arrive in France, was rushed through in-country training to the trenches near Villers-en-haye in October, 1918 where it conducted a reconnaissance-in-force and prepared for the massive 2nd Army Offensive, which was cancelled with the signing of the Armistice at 11 o'clock on 11 November just as the doughboys were to "go over" the top. Unlike most World War One diaries or letter collections, Van Pelt notebooks provide a detailed description of life in the trenches. Some of the entries include: - "Terrific bombardment kept us awake practically all night. . . . Trenches muddy as the devil. . . . Enemy plane flying around and 'Archies' (anti-aircraft guns) got busy. Shrapnel dropped around us in trench and in front of dugout." - "About 9 o'clock . . . everything opened up until about 1:30 am we get our first gas alarm." - "Hear that Evans and Yeager were killed . . . Capt. Johnson gave me Evans ring which I will take to his mother after the war." - "Had a devil of a bombardment during the night and early the next morning the enemy opens up. . . . rifle and machine gun fire kept up at front for two hours." - "Quite a bit of small arms fire during early morning. Shelling continued . . . about 300 yards to our right. . . . Went over to outpost . . . Capt and I get sniped at by a machine gun." - "They dropped a devil of a fire all around us . . . ending about 6am. . . firing continues . . . artillery cuts loose." - "Making final setting to go over. Get everything set to pull out for jumping off place on a minutes notice. . . . Artillery continues to raise the devil. . . . About 11 a.m. we hear that all hostilities and firing ceases at 11 a. m." - "Hear I was reported Dead for several days." Van Pelt continued on active duty after the war until 1925 and died in 1928. Although his obituary stated that he died as the result of complications from a gas attack injury, Van Pelt actually died from testicular tuberculosis which he contracted while in France. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. As of 2016, the Rare Book Hub shows no auction records for similar American trench diaries and only three records for similar British trench diaries.
