In original wrappers, untrimmed and unopened but for the first few leaves in one volume. They all have their original wrappers, but on three volumes they are detached, one of which is repaired with cello tape and a few are quite ragged as expected. The spines on a few are chipped or fragile, and all have foxing across the top edge of the wrappers. Contents fine and very wide margined.. Illus. with b/w plates, photos, drawings, facsimiles, and map. One of 600 copies. Medina's fabulous edition of Chile's national epic. Volume I: Texto (1910). II: Vida de Ercilla (1917). Written on the back of the watercolor in black ink, in Arthur Rackham's hand "A. Rackham/English Fairy Tales./No. 1 (Jack the Giant Killer)"."In those days, the Mount of St. Michael in Cornwall was the fastness of a hugeous giant whose name was Cormoran. He was full eighteen feet in height, some three yards about the middle, of a grim face, and was the terror of all the country-side. He lived in a cave amidst the rocky Mount, and when he desired victuals he would wade across the tides to the mainland and furnish himself forth with all that came in his way. The poor folk and the rich folk alike ran out of their houses and hid themselves when they heard the swish-swash of his big feet in the water; for if he saw them, he would think nothing of broiling half-a-dozen or so of them for breakfast. As it was, he seized their cattle by the score, carrying off half-a-dozen fat oxen on his back at a time, and hanging sheep and pigs to his waistbelt like bunches of dip-candles." (Jack the Giant Killer).In this stupendous watercolor, Cormoran is scouting for victims in the middle of a village. He has at least two oxen slung over his shoulder and four pigs tied to his waistband. His face is exactly what a giant's face should look like - really ugly with crossed-eyes and an underbite like a bulldog. In the background, villagers are scurrying away over the fields and low stone walls outside the village and in the foreground we see a small dog running towards two villagers and their child who are hiding the other side of a pigsty.Another woman villager is ducking out of Cormoran's way and in the house to his right is a little boy peeping out of an upstairs window. The feeling of fear is overwhelming in this incredible watercolor - Rackham manages to depict the sheer terror of these poor people and the feeling of total domination that Cormoran has over them which is clearly established in the stance and demeanor of the giant.Provenance: Sessler's Bookshop, Philadelphia with their typed description on back of frame.

Il collabora à de nombreuses revues "Le Témoin", "Le Sourire", "Le Journal des Dames des Modes", "L'Image", "La Gazette du Bon Ton", "La Vie Parisienne", "Le Rire"... Il réalise ce dessin, vraisemblablement pour "La Vie Parisienne", où la victoire des alliés se fête au jus de la treille. Légende manuscrite à la mine de plomb dans la partie inférieure. Large oblong 4to (12 3/4 x 10 1/4"), pictorial boards, [32]p., a Fine nearly as new copy in the original plain dust wrapper (dw with some fraying but VG+). 1st edition. THIS COPY HAS A WARM INSCRIPTION FROM LILY TO ARTIST KURT WEINHOLD (AN ARTIST OF THE NEUE SACHLICHKEIT MOVEMENT) BELOW WHICH IS A CIRCA 1914 MOUNTED PHOTO OF LILY, HER HUSBAND HANS AND THEIR BABY SON RANIER FOR WHOM THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN. Featuring 14 fabulous, stylized color lithographs by Hildbrandt with bold geometric shaped pictures, and with pictorial endpapers as well. Written for her son Ranier, each illustration faces verse printed in a large font. Lily was experimenting using abstract design and modern art in children's books and the result is breathtaking. Lily Hildebrandt studied art with Adolf Holzel, first in Stuttgart and then in Munich where she met her husband Hans. Hans was a highly educated, leading figure in the German art and architecture world, writing, teaching and lecturing. He and Lily were close friends with Walter Gropius (with whom she had an affair), Wassily Kandinsky, Willi Baumeister, Adolf Holzel and others. In 1935 Lily's work was labeled degenerate and banned by the Nazi's because she was Jewish. Hans's work was also terminated because he was married to a Jewish woman. For years they lived in fear, especially because their son had been arrested by the Gestapo for being a conscientious objector. They all survived the war. This is a special copy of a striking book, rare in this remarkable condition. See Bilderwelt 60.

        World War One America Soldier's Trench Diaries and Papers

      France, 1918. Diary. Very Good. Exceptional two-volume journal (about 125 pages) kept by an Infantry Officer in the 7th Division during World War One. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. The 7th Division, the last Regular Army division to arrive in France, was rushed through in-country training to the trenches near Villers-en-haye in October, 1918 where it conducted a reconnaissance-in-force and prepared for the massive 2nd Army Offensive, which was cancelled with the signing of the Armistice at 11 o'clock on 11 November just as the doughboys were to "go over" the top. Unlike most World War One diaries or letter collections, Van Pelt notebooks provide a detailed description of life in the trenches. Some of the entries include: - "Terrific bombardment kept us awake practically all night. . . . Trenches muddy as the devil. . . . Enemy plane flying around and 'Archies' (anti-aircraft guns) got busy. Shrapnel dropped around us in trench and in front of dugout." - "About 9 o'clock . . . everything opened up until about 1:30 am we get our first gas alarm." - "Hear that Evans and Yeager were killed . . . Capt. Johnson gave me Evans ring which I will take to his mother after the war." - "Had a devil of a bombardment during the night and early the next morning the enemy opens up. . . . rifle and machine gun fire kept up at front for two hours." - "Quite a bit of small arms fire during early morning. Shelling continued . . . about 300 yards to our right. . . . Went over to outpost . . . Capt and I get sniped at by a machine gun." - "They dropped a devil of a fire all around us . . . ending about 6am. . . firing continues . . . artillery cuts loose." - "Making final setting to go over. Get everything set to pull out for jumping off place on a minutes notice. . . . Artillery continues to raise the devil. . . . About 11 a.m. we hear that all hostilities and firing ceases at 11 a. m." - "Hear I was reported Dead for several days." Van Pelt continued on active duty after the war until 1925 and died in 1928. Although his obituary stated that he died as the result of complications from a gas attack injury, Van Pelt actually died from testicular tuberculosis which he contracted while in France. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. As of 2016, the Rare Book Hub shows no auction records for similar American trench diaries and only three records for similar British trench diaries.

        "Le Pilote François de Lagerie à Fez".

      1Mine de plomb signée en bas à droite, titrée et datée en bas à gauche, 1918, 38 X 30,5 cm., encadrée. L'officier d'aviation François de Lagerie (Angers 1895- Casablanca 1921) est représenté sur la terrase du palais de Dar Batha dominant la ville de Fez au Maroc. Bernard Boutet de Monvel réalise le portrait en pied de son ami, pilote comme lui dans la 551ème escadrille commandée par le Comte de Montjou. Pendant cette période de guerre, Bernard BOUTET DE MONVEL se refusait à faire des portraits à l'huile. Il s'agit d'un dessin très abouti où la ville de Fez apparait en prolongement du portrait dans une architecture très géométrique dont l'artiste a le secret.

Published in an edition of 416, this is one of 300 on Arches (no. 178). Square 8vo, [4], [9] pages, with 4 pages consisting of the title and edition limitation, and 9 loose pages of color woodblocks, beautifully heightened with watercolor and laid inside a paper folder. All inside an illustrated chemise that has been cut along the two folds and shows the 10th woodblock on the cover. The woodblocks are in Near Fine condition, with some showing a bit of fading. Chemise slightly soiled and water-stained at bottom of the front panel, not affecting the cover woodblock. Folder protecting the woodblocks has a split on one of the two folds. OCLC WorldCat lists only one institutional holding, at the Art Institute of Chicago. A gorgeous production and rarely seen in the market. RARE. The riotous colors of these prints indicate that the artist, Eugène Corneau, had been influenced by the Fauves. And the publisher, François Bernouard, was a key figure in the Paris literary world during the first half of the 20th century. Among many works, he published Blaise Cendrars' J'ai tué, an important livre d'artiste illustrated by Fernand Léger.

Epouse de Mikhaïl LARIONOV, ses thèmes s'inspirent de l'icône, la paysannerie et l'image populaire russe avant de s'orienter vers l'abstraction avec le rayonnisme. L'affiche est un tirage original avant la lettre, cubisant, aux cinq couleurs et aux formes géométriques.       1918. [1 of 25 copies] London: Privately printed by Clement Shorter, August 1918. Original grey wrappers. First Edition, being one of only 25 copies. This piece appeared that same month (August 1918) in the periodical Reveille. In it Conrad recalls what it was like, exactly four years earlier, when "the first news" of the outbreak of war reached his home town of Cracow, Poland.~This was the second of the six very-limited issues that Shorter produced for Conrad (the first had been ONE DAY MORE). Though the title page says "for private distribution among my friends," these instant-collectibles were actually money-making efforts by the perennially-short-of-cash Conrad. The limitation page of this copy bears only the limitation statement; over the years we have had three other copies -- another like this, one bearing a Roman numeral (copy number?) and Shorter's initials, and one with no number but inscribed by Shorter to someone.~This is a fine copy. Cagle A23. Housed in folding cloth case -- which bears the bookplate of the notable collector Lord Esher (Oliver Brett, Third Viscount Esher, 1881-1963).

In the 1890s he made his first trip to Yellowstone and advocated for anti-poaching laws that applied to National Parks. A longtime supporter of National Parks, and a very vocal proponent of the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, it is likely that this was presented to Emerson by National Park Service Director Stephen Mather in appreciation for his ongoing National Park Service Support. 284 pp. 8vo. Pebbled brown leather cover with gold embossed titling to cover and "Mr. Emerson Hough" embossed at lower right corner of front cover, light scuffing overall. Marbled endpapers. Quite clean within.

      London Warne & Co 1918 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (1918), IN RARE WRAP-AROUND PRINTED GLASSINE BAND. 12mo, 142 x 107 mm, 5 5/8 x 4¼ inches, grey boards, colour plate onlaid, lettered white on upper cover and spine, 85 pages, frontispiece and 26 coloured plates printed 1 side only. Tiny split at top of both hinges, maximum 5 mm, (¼"), 10 mm closed tear on upper hinge with 2 mm (1/10") chip to paper on spine, 25 mm, (1") split at tail of lower hinge, corners very slightly worn. Neat ink inscription on verso front endpaper dated Xmas 1918, a few very minor marks to margins, contents very nice. A very good copy in the ORIGINAL PRINTED GLASSINE ADVERTISING RUNNER, 420 x 85 mm (16½" x 3 1/3") unfolded size, strip missing at top of rear inner flap with loss of 'Ideal Little Books' and part of 'Shelf' (should read: ‘The Ideal Case For Ideal Little Books/Peter Rabbit’s Book Shelf’), part of 1 line address of Warne missing also at lower edge of front flap, two 10 mm pieces missing on spine which is unprinted, few tiny chips and short closed tear to top edge, narrow strip missing at lower edge of upper panel, just affecting last line of text but still easily readable. Quinby (page 90) describes a ‘Glazed paper advertising runner’ which is the same size as ours and whose text is identical to ours except for the front panel which reads ‘New Volume For 1918’/The Tale of Johnny Townmouse’, whereas ours announces: 'The Latest Volume/The Tale of Johnny Townmouse'. The runner is very scarce, (no copy with the ‘advertising runner’ in the Frohnsdorff collection). The front flap lists 3 Potter titles and 2 Painting Books, the rear flap lists the Bookshelf and Peter Rabbit's Slippers. 30,000 copies of the first printing of this title were published and the first copies off the press lack the ‘N’ on London on the title page, in this copy the ‘N’ is present but the inscription ‘Xmas 1918’ indicates a first printing as the second printing did not appear until June 1919.         1918 Original Hardback Wisden Very Good Condition 9/10

      Hi, Here we have a very rare 1918 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. This is a fabulous book, the only downside and this is being very picky is a bookplate has been removed from the front left page. You probably wouldn't notice but I have to point it out. The front board is superb, hardly a mark and bright gilt,the spine cloth is excellent with bright gilt, it really is a top book. Super rear board too. Excellent, original hinges, and very clean inside just an ex owners name to the front right pastedown. If being picky there is a slight bobbling to front board cloth and inside a sort of corrigated iron appearance for a couple of pages. A wisden to own and brag about. Average 1918s are appearing on line at 5k , no need to pay that much.

        Over the Top for You Buy U.S. Gov't Bonds, Third Liberty Loan

      Ketterlinus, Philadelphia 1918 - This poster features a young 'doughboy' advancing out of his trench, clutching a billowing American flag. His pale face and the bright colors of the flag stand out prominently against the dark background. Sidney H. Riesenberg (1885-1971) was an illustrator from Chicago who lived in Yonkers, NY. He was one of be best know illustrators of the WW1 era, creating numerous posters for the war effort, including those for the Marines and the US Navy. This poster, for the Third Liberty Loan, is his most celebrated work. A small tear at bottom, left and top margins but otherwise in very good condition. Original Poster. Color lithograph. 30 x 20 inches.

[To my dear and gentle [.] Gleb Vladimirovich Chizhov towards the enriching of his Pushkin collection. Sincerely yours, N.Zaretskiy. 16 IV 1951, Paris]; traces of glue and paper on reverse, margins slightly chipped without affecting drawing, small marginal waterstain in right margin. A lively portrait of the great Russian poet, presented by the artist to an important bibliophile and collector. The drawing was competed by Zaretskiy (born in 1876 in Ukraine–1959 in Paris) in 1918 in Yalta, just at the start of his émigré journey through Constantinople to Western Europe. Once settled in Paris in 1951, he presented it to the Russian émigré and bibliophile Gleb Chizhov, whom he had met in the French capital. Having started his career as a military, Zaretskiy later received training as a professional artist. He first emigrated to Berlin, where he was a chairman of the Berlin Union of Russian painters, sculptors and architects [Soyuz russkikh zhivopistsev, vayateley i zodchikh]. There he started developing his interest in Alexander Pushkin's oeuvre. He designed covers and illustrations for many émigré editions of Pushkin's works, including "Domik v Kolomne" [The Little House in Kolomna] (1920), "Grobovshchik" [The Undertaker] (1923), "Arap Petra Velikogo" [The Negro of Peter the Great] (1923), "Pikovaya Dama" [The Queen of Spades] (1924) and "Eugene Onegin" (1930). Having moved to Prague in 1931, the artist organised the exhibition "Russkoe obshchestvo epokhi Pushkina" [The Russian Society at the Time of Pushkin]. The exhibits were subsequently purchased all together by the President of Czechoslovakia Tomáš Masaryk for his personal library. Two years later Zaretskiy organised another exhibition - "Risunki russkikh pisateley" [Drawings by Russian Writers], which produced a huge resonance among the Russian diaspora. Never before were drawings of writers explored as an essential part of their creative process. A unique manuscript copy of the exhibition catalogue, which included 30 reproduced Pushkin's drawings, is now part of the collection of the Columbia University. The drawing was presented to Gleb Chizhov (1892-1986). He was a singer and composer of romances, which he performed under the pseudonym of Kholmskiy. Like a few of his emigre compatriots, he was combining this activity with a job as taxi driver in Paris. He was actively collecting books, ephemera and paintings, while keeping close links with some of the best representatives of the Russian avant-garde movement, such as Remizov. Interestingly, it was an accidental encounter with Chizhov that determined the future of another prominent collector of Russian art and books, René Guerra (b. 1946). Chizhov happened to be a driver of the taxi that Guerra took in Paris as a student. A conversation with the passionate collector provided Guerra with inspiration for many years ahead. Today his collection of Russian art is one of the best in Western Europe. He has also founded the Association for the Safeguard of Russian Cultural Patrimony in France, and compiled over 300 publications on Russian émigré culture. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Russian alphabet tipped onto pastedown in each volume. 33 Figures in Vol. 1; 106 figures in Vol. 2; 49 figures in Vol. 3 and 24 figures in Vol. 4. The figures consist of black and white illustrations and maps, many folding. Each volume has a section of blanck pages for notes with a number of the pages filled at an early date. Limitation page, unused on the reverse of the title page. A very interesting publication marked "Confidential for Official Use Only" on the top of the title page. The limitation page states there wer 3000 copies printed and each were assigned to a specific individual of which this set seems not to have been named. The general use would have been intended for military purposes and thus many were probably destroyed after the First World War. Each volume was given a copy no. An aerial photographic mosaic is a photographic reproduction usually made by carefully fitting together separate photos of an area so that the detail of one photograph matches the detail of all adjacent photographs. That said, this is an aerial photographic map of the city of Washington C.D. made by The School of Aerial Photographic Reconnaissance at Langley Field in Hampton, Virginia on August 17, 1918. The scale is 1 inch equaling a quarter mile. The map measures approximately 28 by 34 inches. There are a couple of repaired or reinforced tears - the largest being eight inches - all repairs are on the verso. Map does show some light creases form being rolled. Surrounding the main image of the city can be seen a thin border of the fabric/backing on which the different photos were assembled. Map will be shipped rolled. Images available.       1918 Manuscrit in-folio à 32 lignes sur belle page d'1 feuillet de titre et 170 ff. maroquin bleu janséniste, doublures en maroquin rouge encadrés d'un triple filet doré, gardes moirées et dominotées, dos à nerfs, non rogné, étui (Semet & Plumelle). Manuscrit autographe daté 27 mars 1918 signé Léon Daudet. Première apparition de l'expression "Guerre totale" qui fera florès au XXe siècle, définie ainsi par l'auteur dans son essai éponyme publié en 1918 : « C'est l'extension de la lutte, dans ses phases aiguës comme dans ses phases chroniques, aux domaines politique, économique, commercial, industriel, intellectuel, juridique et financier. Ce ne sont pas seulement les armées qui se battent, ce sont aussi les traditions, les institutions, les coutumes, les codes, les esprits et surtout les banques. L'Allemagne a mobilisé dans tous ces plans, sur tous ces points. Elle s'est livrée à un débordement de propagande, toujours acharnée, parfois intelligente, parfois stupide, rarement inutile. Elle a constamment cherché, au-delà du front militaire, la désorganisation matérielle et morale du peuple qu'elle attaquait. Elle a poursuivi, pendant les hostilités, en l'intensifiant son programme d'exploitation de l'espionnage et de la trahison, qui était celui de l'avant-guerre. » En 1918, Léon Daudet, 51 ans, est rédacteur en chef de l'Action Française journal qu'il a fondé avec Charles Maurras dix ans auparavant ; depuis 1912, le violent polémiste anti-dreyfusard, royaliste et antisémite organise le procès du "défaitisme et de la trahison" par voie de presse dénonçant une prétendue infiltration des milieux des affaires et de la politique par des agents à la solde de l'Allemagne. Il est condamné pour diffamation en 1913 mais poursuit sa campagne à la Nouvelle Edition Française : L'Avant-guerre études et documents sur l'espionnage juif-allemand en France depuis l'affaire Dreyfus (1914), Hors du joug allemand, mesures d'après guerre (1915). La Guerre totale, écrit et publié la dernière année du conflit conceptualise la vision de l'éditorialiste sous un titre destiné à marquer les esprits ; Daudet y raconte l'affaire « Bonnet rouge », soutenu par l'or allemand, produisant preuves et témoignages puisés dans les colonnes de l'Action Française. [Organe d'extrême gauche, le Bonnet Rouge a défendu le rapprochement franco-allemand avant le premier conflit mondial. En 1914, à la demande du ministre Joseph Caillaux, le journal a publié des articles prenant la défense de sa femme, Henriette Caillaux, accusée du meurtre de Gaston Calmette, le directeur du Figaro. Pendant la guerre, le directeur du Bonnet Rouge, Vigo, dit Almereyda, laisse la direction de son journal à un dénommé Duval, qui reçoit de l'argent de l'étranger pour infléchir la ligne éditoriale : de pacifiste qu'il était, le journal devient franchement antimilitariste, provoquant l'intervention fréquente de la censure. Lorsqu'il enquête sur l'origine des fonds versés au Bonnet Rouge, le magistrat Bouchardon, découvre un échange de correspondances aimables entre Almereyda et Caillaux, qui devra s'expliquer sur ses relations entretenues avec les dirigeants de ce journal. En 1919, Léon Daudet publiera dans la même veine Le poignard dans le dos sur l'affaire Malvy tandis que L'Offensive morale des Allemands en France pendant la guerre - L'Assaut de l'âme française de Louis Marchand paraîtra en 1920. Dernière copie manuscrite encore retouchée par l'auteur, Léon Daudet a disposé dans son texte de nombreuses coupures de presse et des passages tapuscrits que l'éditeur a intégralement reproduits dans la publication de 1918 (pagination et notes éditoriales au crayon bleu) ; en revanche, trois passages furent censurés (pages 118, 123 et 129 de l'imprimé) relatifs à l'ambassade d'Allemagne, "aux services de Mr. Malvy à la Sureté Générale et à la Préfecture de police" (feuillets manuscrits 82, 85 et 88). Joints : 2 bustes de Léon Daudet sur feuilles volantes 1. daté 1926, gravé par André de Székély de Doba (peintre hongrois, 1877-1945) 2. au crayon, signé Pazzi (22 x 28 cm, Ruggero Pazzi 1927-2010), peintre, sculpteur et graveur italien.
