A large period map detailing the American advance into the Rhineland as the Allied occupation began, only weeks after the November 11 armistice, and used by a member of Pershing's staff

Various, 1918-1919. 32" x 50". "Printed map in two sheets, with ink and colored pencil annotations, 32"" x 50"", c. 1918. An untitled map encompassing Luxembourg and the central Rhine Valley, printed in German. Folds, minor losses reinforced with paper, creases, some tears and chips at margins, else very good. The present map depicts the phased advance of the American Army of Occupation into the Rhineland from December 1 to December 11, 1918 as it marched from Luxembourg to its headquarters at the bridgehead at Koblenz. United States forces consisted of 240,000 men in 9 divisions and remained in Germany until January 1923. French forces remained in the Rhineland until 1930 (and did not relinquish the Saar region until a plebiscite in 1935). The present map was part of a collection kept by General Robert C. Richardson (1882-1954). By the time the United States entered the First World War, Richardson, a captain, assisted in the rapid buildup of training of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.) bound for France. Fluent in French, Richardson served as an aide and observer with foreign armies before being assigned to the Operations Division, General Staff, A.E.F. as a liaison officer in June 1918. In that capacity he was involved in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. Following the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Richardson served on the Reparations Board of the Peace Commission in Paris and then as part of U.S. Army occupation forces in Germany stationed at Coblenz and later at Mainz. Richardson, a career Army officer was a member of the West Point Class of 1904, serving in the Philippines and as an instructor of modern languages at the United States Military Academy. During the Second World War, Richardson served as Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, and was instrumental in training American troops in the fundamentals of jungle warfare and amphibious assaults.         Two Typed Letters, Signed, Addressed to Louise Bryant and George Bernard Shaw [with] Original photograph of Bryant

New York, 1918. Letter addressed to the journalist Louise Bryant, wife of John Reed, concerning the accompanying letter of introduction addressed to "My dear Shaw" (George Bernard). Apparently Harris had offered several letters of introduction to Bryant, though here he writes "On second thoughts [sic] I do not think my letters to the other people would help you much. They are prejudiced against me; but I hope you will have a good time and come back in the two months you fixed." To Shaw, Harris writes "This is to introduce you to Mrs. Reed, the wife of John Reed who has done such good work for us here in telling the truth about the Russian revolutionaries [...] She is now going to England and Ireland as I understand, to get the true view of things [...] She is fairminded, eager, sympathetic, and I am sure you will be glad to help her on her way." These letters were composed two months prior to the publication of Bryant's collected journalistic pieces Six Red Months in Russia, and we have been unable to unearth any evidence that Bryant's trip to England and Ireland ever took place, this period coinciding with the Reeds's taking up residence at Patchin Place in Greenwich Village. Two typed letters signed by Harris (that to Shaw signed twice) on Pearson's Magazine letterhead, both dated Aug. 24, 1918; with original envelope addressed to Miss Louis Bryant. Letter to Bryant with two manuscript annotations; letter to Shaw with manuscript postscript, "Why don't you write? Pearson's Magazine now is mine--Do you get it regularly? Ever, Fr. H." Mail folds as usual, envelope with a few tears, else Very Good or better. With original photograph of Bryant, possibly intended for a passport.

Some minor rubbing and light wear to hinges, otherwise a near fine example in the original matching (slightly worn) cardboard slipcases.Edgar Degas: born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas (19 July 1834 - 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation. At the beginning of his career, Degas wanted to be a historical painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.

Oeuvre originale

        Codorniu Spanish Champagne Advertising Fan.

Folding fan, paper with wooden slats. A little damage to one slat otherwise in very good condition. Mounted in a glazed box. An interesting advertising piece. The fan has a drawing by José Navarro y Llorens of a bottle of Raventos Codorniu as the body for a car with added wheels and steering wheel, and with a driver and passender astride the bottle. The fan was clearly meant for the British market with the text on the reverse reading "Codorniu Spanish Champagne. The Favourite Wine of H.M. King and Queen of Spain. First Prizes in all Expositions. Ask for it." In 1872, Josep Raventós produced cava for the first time in Spain using the ?Traditional Method? and established a completely new industry in the Alt Penedès region. The Codorníu cellars at Sant Sadurní d'Anoia were built on the orders of Manuel Raventós between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (1895-1915). He chose the renowned Catalán architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, to design the facility. At that time Codorníu was producing about 100,000 bottles of cava per year. Born in Valencia in 1867, José Navarro Lloréns was influenced by several of Spain's greatest Romantic and Impressionist masters, including Mariano Fortuny and Joaquín Sorolla. With an innate talent for capturing the effects of light and colour, Navarro Llorens travelled to Morocco where he was able to exercise this aptitude to its fullest extent. The bright North African sun illuminated his palette, offering new patterns of clarity, colour and shadow. Navarro Llorens also discovered in Morocco a fresh subject matter. While he had always had a proclivity for depicting scenes of everyday life, the new themes he found in Morocco gave the artist the inspiration to compose some of his most beautiful and jewel-like canvases.

Lord Byron studied the Armenian language there, hence the silver print photograph of Harris with the priest Nerses Diratzouyan at Byron's table at the monastery, dated October 14, 1911. "Newspaperman, book author, radio announcer and managing director of Louisville station WHAS. Harris tirelessly advocated for the commercial development of radio, traveling to Washington D.C., sitting in on Department of Commerce meetings, pulling at the sleeve of then department head and future President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. Harris spoke the first words ever heard over the public airwaves of Kentucky, July 18, 1922 saying, "This is WHAS, the radiotelephone broadcast station of the Courier-Journal and Louisville Times in Louisville, Kentucky." If that wasn't enough, he also helped design the modern state Kentucky flag that today flies over the capitol dome in Frankfurt.'" (Lewis, John. Radio Master: The Life and Times of Sports Broadcasting Great Ted Husing. Langdon Street Press 2010.) Harris was the author of "Microphone Memoirs of the horse and buggy days of radio", Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis, Indiana (1937). Certificate 8.5 x 13"; photograph 3.25 x 4.25". Certificate a little browned at edges with a couple sml marginal closed tears repaired but very good overall, as is the photograph. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Photograph Album Documenting American Espionage in Siberia, 1918

Siberia, Russia, 1918. Photograph Album. Very Good. The album appears to have been prepared by a YMCA worker and contains 20 pages of 81 3"x4" black and white photographs, all captioned and in very nice shape. Thd photographs include: Colonel Preston, the leader of the "American Mission" and his staf;, soldiers of the Czech Legion and the New Siberian Army; stations, facilities, and bridges along the Trans-Siberian Railway; the relief train; a Czech Legion armored train; Bolshevik prisoners; a pet brown bear;refugees and peasants; the house where Czar Nicholas and his family were executed; and much more. Bound with a leather thong, no cover. Very little wear to the album pages. Certainly unique and exceptionally scarce. Following the Bolshevik revolution during World War One and Russia's subsequent peace treaty with the Central Powers, America's access to its only significant source of platinum, a metal urgently needed for the production of airplane engines and "liberty" motors, was cut off. The Soviets confiscated all of the known platinum stocks within the country and major black market supplies soon became prohibitively expensive. To fill the shortfall, the Commerce Department arranged for a somewhat shadowy American fur trader operating from a business office in Riga, George L. Preston, to receive a "commission" as a Colonel in the Red Cross and lead a humanitarian mission to provide YMCA supplies to members of the Czech Legion who were moving east along the Trans-Siberian Railway. In actuality, Preston had heard of the platinum requirement and suggested to the government that he would be able to obtain what was needed from as yet unconfiscated stocks from small mines in the Ural Mountains as well as a secret stock-pile at Ekaterinberg (now Sverdlosk) that were in areas controlled by the anti-Bolshevik New Siberian Army. Preston assumed control of the relief train in Vladivostok and traveled west along the railroad avoiding both Soviet and German agents while exchanging either cash or cans of Boston baked beans for the precious metal. When the train reached Ekaterinberg, Preston was able to make his final surreptitious purchase from a local banker. Throughout the trip, Preston was hailed for his humanitarian work and treated as an important dignitary. He served as the reviewing officer for Czech and Siberian parades, and at Ekaterinberg, he was one of the first westerners to be shown the house where Czar Nicholas and his family had been executed. While at Ekaterinberg, Preston was secretly informed his real mission had been discovered and that the Soviets were planning traps to capture the train. Hurriedly, the train returned to Vladivostok where Preston turned over the platinum to the Consul General who in turn transferred it to the Admiral in charge of the U.S. fleet in the port. Preston booked passage on another vessel to the United States and upon arriving, traveled to Washington where he filed his official report. Immediately after, he traveled to his home in Campello, Massachusetts to visit his family. Within 3 hours of his arrival there, Preston mysteriously died, purportedly of exhaustion and stress. Photographs include: Colonel Preston and the staff of the "American Mission; Soldiers of the Czech Legion and the New Siberian Army; Stations, facilities, and bridges along the Trans-Siberian Railway; The relief train; "A Czech Legion armored train; Bolshevik prisoners; A pet brown bear; Refugees and peasants; The house where Czar Nicholas and his family were executed; and much more.

Dezember 1914. 602 Gramm.         World War One Artilleryman's Trench Diary

France, 1918. Soft Cover. Very Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. This trench diary is far more interesting than most First World War journals and includes a good bit of combat content in addition to recounting the routine daily activities of a World War One artilleryman from Providence, Rhode Island who was assigned to th3 103rd Field Artillery, 26th Division (Yankee Division). Arnold began the year hospitalized, probably at Coetquidan, with acute endocarditis. After his release, he spent the rest of the month drilling, performing guard duty, training with his battery's guns and caissons, doing stable work, caring for horses, maintaining equipment, and hauling ammunition. In early March, the the 26th Division departed for Soissons where it served with the French Army in occupying the Chemin des Dames Sector. During its time at Chemin des Dames, Arnold's battery experienced its "first real air raid. . . . Germans were right above us and French searchlight and guns were trying to bring them down." Later in February, Arnold "saw the French bring down a German Plane. Both Germans were killed outright and the machine was wrecked." By early April, Arnold's battery had relocated to the Toul-Boucq Sector and began to encounter more Germans. He notes that on 7 April he "went out on the line . . . to repair a break and before I found it the Boche began to shell Dead Man's Curve. Their shots landed very close to me and I laid in a shallow trench for protection. . . . One man killed and three wounded." During another shelling, a round came "very close to our station, one struck directly across us throwing stones into the dugout." On 20 April, the unit came under a "big German barrage which lasted all through the day. . . . I worked very hard under shell fire and airplane observation repairing lines . . . driven out once by machine gun fire from plane." The next day there was "beacoup work repairing damage done to our lines. They were literally shot to pieces. At least three ambulances were overturned, one big truck and a couple of horses that I know about. Our boys from the battery who were in S---- handled themselves nobly. O.T. 12 was destroyed killing some infantrymen. . . . Broadhead and a lieutenant were killed and Lowell, Jordan Cheeves and others wounded. The Germans were driven out . . . but not until after they had killed many of our men and taken prisoners including C Battery Anti-tankers." Two days later, "Barnes, Butterworth and I were shelled while returning from linework, a fragment hitting Barnes in the back of the neck." Artillery duels continued throughout May and June destroying one section of the battery's dugouts, exploding an ammunition warehouse in Beaumont, and killing another member of Arnold's battery. In July, the unit participated in the Champagne- Aisne-Marne Operations with Arnold first noting that "The French & Americans made an attack gaining several kilometers," and later recounting that "Our infantry took the hill . . . and kept right on going. Lasted all morning and part of the afternoon. At 10 o'clock the line was beyond our range of fire and nearly out of sight from our O.T." During the St. Mihel Offensive in September, Arnold relates that while apparently following the American advance, he "went on a short exploration high on the hill. . . . Found a high powered antiaircraft searchlight in ground also a dynamo and engine which supplied light and power for the various uses. Many strongly fortified trenches and positions. Great view. . . . German 77 right side of the position." Although the division participated in the last campaign of the war, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Arnold's unit was allowed to stand down on 20 October and "returned to the rear echelon" where it remained until the armistice on 11 November. Approximately 110 pages of handwritten text, most in pencil. For the most part, the writing is legible and easily read although very small in some places. Six of the pages have become very smudges and are unreadable; several more pages are partially smudged but much of their text can still be read. The sound binding has been professionally mended, and all pages are present. The flexible cover has some minor wear.

        My Antonia

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1918 - First Edition of the authorÕs widely acknowledged masterpiece. The plates are in the first state; front hinge cracked; rear hinge mended, but overall very nearly fine; in a custom, brown quarter-morocco slipcase and chemise. The first printing comprised 3500 copies, of which about 2500 were issued with the plates in the first state, printed on coated paper. Cather was meticulous in her specifications for the bookÕs production, commissioning W.T. Benda to do the illustrations. Particularly concerned that the illustrations be at their proper places in the book, she also wanted them to be on the same paper as the text. Apparently displeased with the production and promotion of this book, Cather subsequently left Houghton, Mifflin for Knopf, her publisher for the remainder of her career. His final illustration for "Mr. and Mrs. Vinegar" in Flora Annie Steel's English Fairy Tales, depicting Mr. Vinegar returning to Mrs. Vinegar empty-handed. After Mrs. Vinegar breaks their glass jar house, she and Mr. Vinegar set out to try to buy a new home. They come upon 40 guineas, and Mrs. Vinegar sends Mr. Vinegar out to buy a cow. He overpays for an old cow, and journeys back to his wife, during which he subsequently trades the cow for some bagpipes, the bagpipes for some gloves, and the gloves for a stick. He encounters a magpie who mocks him, and his throws the stick at the bird, losing it when it becomes stuck in a tree. Mr. Vinegar returns home to his wife empty-handed; despite her violent reaction, he maintains his cheerful attitude whilst five of Mr. Rackham's anthropomorphic trees look on in amusement. As is often the case, Arthur Rackham has put himself in the picture as poor Mr. Vinegar!"And that is the story of Mr. and Mrs. Vinegar".
