[BOLSHEVIK CIVIL WAR PROPAGANDA FOR CHILDREN] Skaz dyadyushki Pakhoma o tom, kak bednota pomogla Moskve [i.e. Tale by Uncle Pakhom how Poor Folk Helped Moscow]

Moscow: Izd. Krestianskogo otd. VTSIK, 1918. 16 pp. 23,5x15 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Small tears of the covers and spine, last page separated, Soviet bookshop's stamps, general wear. Otherwise good copy. Extremely rare. Agitation to send food to Moscow for peasants in a form of folk poem. This is a historical evidence of a famine in 1918-1924, future Dekulakization and collectivization. Moscow was dying from food shortage in that period of time. This is also the time of prodrazvyorstka (a Bolshevik policy and campaign of confiscation of grain and other agricultural produce from the peasants for a nominal fixed price according to specified quotas). Due to the low intake of bread on the state procurement the Provisional Government introduced a 'grain monopoly' - the transfer of the entire volume of produced bread minus the established norms of consumption for personal and household needs. The 'grain monopoly' was confirmed by the Council of People's Commissars decree authority from 9 May 1918.

First edition hard back binding in original teal blue covers, small black and gilt title label to the beige spine, gilt lettering to the front cover. 8vo. 8½'' x 6''. Contains 118 printed pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Chamberlain and single-sided monochrome photographs. A native of Minneapolis, Chamberlain joined the French Lafayette Flying Corps in June of 1917. He attended French school and was posted to Escadrille Spad 98. Slightly older than his squadron mates, he was often more reckless than the rest. During the German offensive in the spring of 1918, his squadron flew air superiority missions over the front lines and on 13 June, his group dove from 12,000 feet on some German aircraft. They had been lured into a trap and other German fighters attacked, Chamberlain was killed in his seat by an unlucky burst of machine gun fire from an enemy aircraft. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Legislation of Palestine 1918-1925. Including the Orders-in-Council, Ordinances, Public Notices, Proclamations, Regulations, etc. Alexandria, Whitehead Morris Ltd., 1926.

1918. Large 4to (194 x 257 mm). 2 vols. XXII, 668, XXIII-XXXII pp. (2), VIII, 536, IX-XIV pp. Contemp. half calf with cloth covers. Collection of all legislation issued in British Palestine since December 1917 which was still valid and in force in 1926. "The collection does not represent the whole of the Palestine Law, because the Ottoman Law which was in force at the outbreak of the War remains the basis of the legal system of the country" (vol. I, p. iv). The laws governing the administration of the Palestine Mandate which followed the Balfour Declaration constitute crucial documents for understanding the transfer of power and the gradual replacement of Ottoman, Islamic, customary law by British and eventually Israeli law. Bentwich (1883-1971), the British-appointed attorney-general of Mandatory Palestine, was a prominent Zionist and wrote widely on the establishment of a Jewish Homeland. - Slight foxing to endpapers; ownership stamp "M. Fitzgerald". A scarce work in a good set. OCLC 22644076.

SPRINGTIDE OF LIFE: POEMS OF CHILDHOOD

RACKHAM, ARTHUR. (RACKHAM,ARTHUR)illus. SPRINGTIDE OF LIFE: POEMS OF CHILDHOOD by Algernon Swinburne. London: Heinemann (1918). 4to, green gilt cloth, near Fine. 1st edition. Featuring 8 beautiful color plates and 52 black & whitess by Rackham. Laid in is a 2 page handwritten signed letter dated February 5, 1930 from Rackham to a Mr. Taylor reading: "Here are the remaining drawings for Mr. Scheuer. You will see there are 23 of them. This number is reached (instead of 16) because in several cases there was more than one drawing on the same sheet of paper and they are now separated. In two cases there were two drawings: and in one, six. The above is now my permanent home address to which all communication had better be addressed as I shall be there much more than at my London studio (where I can be, at any time, by appointment). I wish I had been able to get these drawings to you before this and I very much hope Mr. Scheuer has not been inconvenienced. I need hardly say it has not been possible to do otherwise but I am now back at work again and completely recovered from my operation.

        The Son of Tarzan

      A. L. Burt, 1918 The Son of Tarzan, inscribed by the author to his daughter. A very early printing, inscribed by Burroughs to his daughter Joan "With love to Joan from Papa, Tarzana Ranch, January, 1923." Famously, Burroughs did not have a first edition of Son of Tarzan, because supposedly it was stolen from him by a young relative who needed the money to support a sad habit. Joan was involved in producing the Tarzan movies, and in fact at one point was assigned to find someone who could play Tarzan in one of the movies. She selected a prominent actor named James Pierce, and later they were married. Very good in a very good dust jacket, housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.. Inscribed by Author(s). 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

London: Egoist Press, 1917 [i.e. 1918] - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to front board in blind and to spine gilt. Spine panel slightly faded, spine rolled and starting but text block tight, endpapers lightly toned. A very good copy. The so-called second edition, and the first edition to be printed in the UK. It was preceded by the English issue of the Huebsch edition of 1916. Due at least in part to the adverse reception of the Egoist serialisation of A Portrait, no English printer would print the book for fear of prosecution under the obscenity laws, so Huebsch undertook the true first publication in the US. He send around 750 sets of American sheets for issue in the UK in February 1917; it was preceded by the US issue in December 1916. Slocum & Cahoon A13. [Attributes: First Edition]

Joan And Peter ( Association Copy : Signed By The Author )

The First UK Printing published by Cassell and Co. in 1918. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Correct first issue blind-stamped green boards with gilt titling to the spine. The latter is slightly dulled. Mild pushing at the spine ends. Light spotting to the prelims and text block. The usual mild offsetting to the end papers. The pages remain clean and fresh. Free from erasures and inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct first issue bearing the price of 9/- net to the spine. Moderate toning to the spine and flap edges with some light edge -wear to the spine ends. It remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the author to the half-title: 'A.T.S, with love from, H G'. The recipient is Arthur Thomas (Tommy) Simmons: "Wells met Simmons at South Kensington in London whilst they were students and they became close friends, taking an active role in the Debating Society and Socialist meetings. The two became regular correspondents with Simmons taking a keen interest in Wells' writings. He was the author of numerous textbooks and was for many years the editor of 'The School world'. The description of Barnstaple's old friend in "Men Like Gods' (chapter 7, section 3) reflects the reaction of H.G. Wells to the death of Simmons." {A H.G. Wells Chronology : J.R. Hammond : Macmillan Press 1999}. Joan and Peter is a satirical portrait of late-Victorian and Edwardian England, a critique of the English educational system on the eve of World War I, a study of the impact of that war on English society, and a general reflection on the purposes of education. Wells regarded it as "one of the most ambitious" of his novels. A wonderful association copy as evidenced by the warmth of the inscription 'with love.'. Scarce with such attributes. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

"Arab Types". Album of Arabian portrait photographs. Syria, c. 1918.

1918. 8vo. 15 black and white photographs captioned in white, plus one repeat in a smaller print. Original board album, acquired from "M. Arthur, Beyrouth". Paper label to upper cover: "Arab Types. Syria". Small but fascinating collection of portrait photographs showing Arabian nobles as well as commoners, all captioned and the subject often identified by name and tribe. The photos, many of which are executed as highly expressive profile studies, were taken and assembled by Lt. Col. Walter Francis Stirling (1880-1958), Chief of Staff to T. E. Lawrence. While the present photographs were taken during his time with Lawrence, whom Stirling revered, it is not his British comrades but rather the striking features of the sheikhs and bedouins on which this collection is focused. Among the images are "Sheik Gawaileh of Nejd, one of Lawrence's Bodyguard", and "Sheikh Hamondi, Friend of Lawrence"; others are more ominously identified as "Yezidi Shepherd, Devil worshipper" or "Bad type of Hadadiyim Tribesman". Of many noble tribesmen here depicted, such as Fauraz ibn Sha'laan, Emir of the Ruwalla, or Sheikh Daham al-Hadi, Paramount Sheikh of the Shammar tribe, these probably constitute the only photographic record. - Stirling was trained at Sandhurst and served in the Transvaal operation during the Boer War before being seconded to the Egyptian Army in 1906. He spent five years patrolling with an Arab battalion on the Eritrean and Abyssinian borders. Throughout WWI he served at Gallipoli and the Palastinian campaign until he was appointed chief staff officer to Lawrence of Arabia, who called him "Stirling the imperturbable". In 1937, Stirling would reflect on his famous wartime comrade: "From then [early 1918] throughout the final phase of the Arab revolt on till the capture of Damascus, I worked, travelled, and fought alongside Lawrence [...] We sensed that we were serving with a man immeasurably our superior [...] In my considered opinion, Lawrence was the greatest genius whom England has produced in the last two centuries [...] If ever a genius, a scholar, an artist, and an imp of Shaitan were rolled into one personality, it was Lawrence." In 1919 Stirling became advisor to Emir Feisal and Deputy Political Officer in Cairo, then acting governor of Sinai and Governor of the Jaffa district in Palestine before moving to Albania in 1923 to take up a position advising and assisting in the reorganisation of the Albanian Ministry of the Interior.

Autograph letter signed, and with original woodcut. Zehlendorf-Mitte (Berlin), 24. XII. 1918.

1918. 4to. ¾ pp. Feininger writes to Paul van Ostayen (1896-1926), Flemish avant-garde poet related to the Dada and Expressionist movements, who influenced modern literature in Belgium and the Netherlands. Towards the end of the First World War van Ostayen had gone to Berlin for political reasons, stayed for three years and befriended Feininger and other artists and literary figures. Feininger invites van Ostayen to join him and his wife on Boxing Day. "The five pictures have not arrived yet, but we mustn't wait for them in offer to be able to welcome you - Because of the pitiful state of transportation it is very uncertain now when they will arrive. We wish you a non too dreary Christmas [...] in the strange Big City! Only a very easy spirit would talk of 'Merry' now [...]" (transl. from the German original). - An original woodcut showing a church or cathedral in the upper left corner on this golden yellow sheet of onion skin paper. The woodcut is also suggestive of the Bauhaus 1919 Manifesto cover. The paper is fragile and tattered along right and left edges not affecting text. - In the year prior to this letter of 1918, Feininger had his first solo exhibit at Sturm Gallery in Berlin. He was Walter Gropius' first faculty appointment at the Bauhaus in Germany which Gropius founded in 1919. Feininger became the master artist in charge of the printmaking workshop.

The giant Cormoran was the terror of all the country-side

1918. Jack the Giant Killer"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "The giant Cormoran was the terror of all the country-side" [London, 1918]. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, signed "Arthur Rackham" on lower left-hand corner, for the color plate facing page 76, in the Rackham-illustrated edition of English Fairy Tales. London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1918. Image size: 10 x 7 5/8 inches: 254 x 194 mm. (board size: 11 1/4 x 7 15/16 inches: 286 x 202 mm.). Matted, framed and glazed. Written on the back of the watercolor in black ink, in Arthur Rackham's hand "A. Rackham/English Fairy Tales./No. 1 (Jack the Giant Killer)"."In those days, the Mount of St. Michael in Cornwall was the fastness of a hugeous giant whose name was Cormoran. He was full eighteen feet in height, some three yards about the middle, of a grim face, and was the terror of all the country-side. He lived in a cave amidst the rocky Mount, and when he desired victuals he would wade across the tides to the mainland and furnish himself forth with all that came in his way. The poor folk and the rich folk alike ran out of their houses and hid themselves when they heard the swish-swash of his big feet in the water; for if he saw them, he would think nothing of broiling half-a-dozen or so of them for breakfast. As it was, he seized their cattle by the score, carrying off half-a-dozen fat oxen on his back at a time, and hanging sheep and pigs to his waistbelt like bunches of dip-candles." (Jack the Giant Killer). In this stupendous watercolor, Cormoran is scouting for victims in the middle of a village. He has at least two oxen slung over his shoulder and four pigs tied to his waistband. His face is exactly what a giant's face should look like - really ugly with crossed-eyes and an underbite like a bulldog. In the background, villagers are scurrying away over the fields and low stone walls outside the village and in the foreground we see a small dog running towards two villagers and their child who are hiding the other side of a pigsty.Another woman villager is ducking out of Cormoran's way and in the house to his right is a little boy peeping out of an upstairs window. The feeling of fear is overwhelming in this incredible watercolor - Rackham manages to depict the sheer terror of these poor people and the feeling of total domination that Cormoran has over them which is clearly established in the stance and demeanor of the giant.Provenance: Sessler's Bookshop, Philadelphia with their typed description on back of frame.

        KLEIN - RANIERS WELTREISE

HILDEBRANDT, LILY. GERMAN. (HILDEBRANDT,LILY) KLEIN - RANIERS WELTREISE. Munchen: Georg W. Dietrich, 1918. Large oblong 4to (12 3/4 x 10 1/4"), pictorial boards, [32]p., a Fine nearly as new copy in the original plain dust wrapper (dw with some fraying but VG+). 1st edition. THIS COPY HAS A WARM INSCRIPTION FROM LILY TO ARTIST KURT WEINHOLD (AN ARTIST OF THE NEUE SACHLICHKEIT MOVEMENT) BELOW WHICH IS A CIRCA 1914 MOUNTED PHOTO OF LILY, HER HUSBAND HANS AND THEIR BABY SON RANIER FOR WHOM THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN. Featuring 14 fabulous, stylized color lithographs by Hildbrandt with bold geometric shaped pictures, and with pictorial endpapers as well. Written for her son Ranier, each illustration faces verse printed in a large font. Lily was experimenting using abstract design and modern art in children's books and the result is breathtaking. Lily Hildebrandt studied art with Adolf Holzel, first in Stuttgart and then in Munich where she met her husband Hans. Hans was a highly educated, leading figure in the German art and architecture world, writing, teaching and lecturing. He and Lily were close friends with Walter Gropius (with whom she had an affair), Wassily Kandinsky, Willi Baumeister, Adolf Holzel and others. In 1935 Lily's work was labeled degenerate and banned by the Nazi's because she was Jewish. Hans's work was also terminated because he was married to a Jewish woman. For years they lived in fear, especially because their son had been arrested by the Gestapo for being a conscientious objector. They all survived the war. This is a special copy of a striking book, rare in this remarkable condition. See Bilderwelt 60.

World War One America Soldier's Trench Diaries and Papers

France, 1918. Diary. Very Good. Exceptional two-volume journal (about 125 pages) kept by an Infantry Officer in the 7th Division during World War One. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. The 7th Division, the last Regular Army division to arrive in France, was rushed through in-country training to the trenches near Villers-en-haye in October, 1918 where it conducted a reconnaissance-in-force and prepared for the massive 2nd Army Offensive, which was cancelled with the signing of the Armistice at 11 o'clock on 11 November just as the doughboys were to "go over" the top. Unlike most World War One diaries or letter collections, Van Pelt notebooks provide a detailed description of life in the trenches. Some of the entries include: - "Terrific bombardment kept us awake practically all night. . . . Trenches muddy as the devil. . . . Enemy plane flying around and 'Archies' (anti-aircraft guns) got busy. Shrapnel dropped around us in trench and in front of dugout." - "About 9 o'clock . . . everything opened up until about 1:30 am we get our first gas alarm." - "Hear that Evans and Yeager were killed . . . Capt. Johnson gave me Evans ring which I will take to his mother after the war." - "Had a devil of a bombardment during the night and early the next morning the enemy opens up. . . . rifle and machine gun fire kept up at front for two hours." - "Quite a bit of small arms fire during early morning. Shelling continued . . . about 300 yards to our right. . . . Went over to outpost . . . Capt and I get sniped at by a machine gun." - "They dropped a devil of a fire all around us . . . ending about 6am. . . firing continues . . . artillery cuts loose." - "Making final setting to go over. Get everything set to pull out for jumping off place on a minutes notice. . . . Artillery continues to raise the devil. . . . About 11 a.m. we hear that all hostilities and firing ceases at 11 a. m." - "Hear I was reported Dead for several days." Van Pelt continued on active duty after the war until 1925 and died in 1928. Although his obituary stated that he died as the result of complications from a gas attack injury, Van Pelt actually died from testicular tuberculosis which he contracted while in France. The diaries are in nice shape. Collection also has other post-war related items including a calling card engraving plate showing, medical records, will, obituary, etc. As of 2016, the Rare Book Hub shows no auction records for similar American trench diaries and only three records for similar British trench diaries.

Square 8vo, [4], [9] pages, with 4 pages consisting of the title and edition limitation, and 9 loose pages of color woodblocks, beautifully heightened with watercolor and laid inside a paper folder. All inside an illustrated chemise that has been cut along the two folds and shows the 10th woodblock on the cover. The woodblocks are in Near Fine condition, with some showing a bit of fading.
