Hand-drawn cartoon book, What the Navy Did to Me by Swabo Sam, satirizing World War One Navy life.

circa 1918. Unbound. 80 unbound leaves with original cartoon drawings on one side. Each leaf is approximately 5.5” x 9”. Generally clean pages with some marginal soiling and wear. The cover is worn at the top edge with archival tape reinforcement on the reverse. Each of the leaves has a pinhole in the upper left corner suggesting the leaves may have been displayed one-at-a-time on a bulletin board. The cartoons are very well done and many are quite funny. The first 34 leaves cover the period from Swabo Sam’s enlistment through his completion of boot camp and include humorous observations about in-processing, showers, haircuts, the dentist, shots, his first night sleeping in a Navy hammock, uniforms, medical care, drill, physical training, and more. The remaining leaves feature shipboard life including Sam’s first squall, first trip aloft, first trip along the boom, first general quarters, spud alley, painting, polishing, chipping, swabbing, fire call, transporting doughboys, liberty, tattooing, gun drills, and more.

May 1918 Letter on Ministry of Munitions stationery from Churchill to Miss Etheldreda Morris regarding her recommendation for MBE by Churchill, along with her MBE medal, accompanying ribbon, and original presentation box

London 1918 - This unique First World War item is the original M.B.E. medal, with accompanying ribbon and presentation case, awarded to Miss Etheldreda Morris in 1918 for contributions to munitions manufacturing efforts, along with a typed letter to Morris from Winston Churchill dated May 1918 informing her that she would receive the honor as a result of his recommendation. It is noteworthy that this award to a British woman for her wartime work dates from the year that British women first gained the right to vote, partly on the political strength of their First World War contributions. The letter is typed on embossed Ministry of Munitions stationery, dated "May, 1918" and reads: "I have had much pleasure in recommending to the Prime Minister that you should be appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and I am glad to learn that the King has approved the recommendation. Pray accept my hearty congratulations on this recognition of the valuable services rendered by you to the State." The typed valediction is "Yours very faithfully" followed by Churchill’s signature in black ink. The letter bears a single vertical and single horizontal fold, consonant with original mailing, as well as mild spotting, wrinkling, and a .25 inch closed tear from having spent life stored atop the MBE medal within the presentation case. The original, leather-covered Garrard & Co. leather presentation case is scuffed but fully intact. Within is the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire M.B.E. medal, with purple bow ribbon. The printed personal calling card of Miss Etheldreda Morris is also laid in the case, along with the letter from Churchill. Etheldreda Morris was born in the Welsh town of Penbryn, the daughter of Welsh poet Lewis Morris. During World War I she was Chief Lady Welfare Superintendent at NEF (National Explosives Factory) Pembrey, also in Wales. Pembrey had been the site of a Nobel dynamite factory since the 1880s, but during the war it was upgraded to manufacture the more powerful TNT. Situated near sand dunes, the factory was ideally placed to minimize the damage that would have been caused during an explosion. Churchill was Minister for Munitions from 1917 to 1919, and was thus the head of the department for which Morris worked in 1918. The M.B.E. she received was part of King George V's 1918 Birthday Honours, published in the London Gazette in early June 1918. Churchill took a tortuous path to his position as Minister of Munitions, where he served from July 1917 to January 1919. He began the First World War as the powerful First Lord of the Admiralty, but was scapegoated for the Dardanelles disaster and forced out in May 1915. By November 1915, Churchill was serving at the Front, spending part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. His May 1916 return to London saw "no upsurge in his political fortunes" and left him criticizing the war effort from an unaccustomed "position of political weakness and personal isolation" much as he would two decades later on the eve of the Second World War. (Gilbert, Vol. III) By May 1917 there was growing parliamentary opposition to the Government. "Lloyd George knew that Churchill's aim was to return to a position of authority, but that if no place were found for him, he would continue to attack the Government's war policy." (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.15) Whether for Churchill's talents, desire to silence him, or both, Lloyd George invited Churchill to return to the Cabinet as Minister of Munitions. True to form, Churchill proved "eager to involve himself in as wide a range of discussions as possible" (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.32) and implemented major reorganization of his Ministry, optimizing production and asserting exactly the sort of influence his detractors resented. Churchill would prevail in his difficult return to power, assuming control of the War Office as Secretary of State for War and Air by January 1919.

The Wartime price is a penny halfpenny in smaller format, increasing to twopence in 1922. This set unfortunately lacks the coloured portraits of 1929 test cricketers and obviously is without the metal badges and models. After this run the series was combined with 'The Gem'.

Kto takoi General Denikin? - Krasnoarmeitsy!

1918 - DENIKIN, Anton Ivanovich. Kto takoi General Denikin? - Krasnoarmeitsy! No place, circa 1919. Pamphlet (7-3/4 by 4-3/4 inches), self wrappers, uncut and unopened; 32 pages. $2200.Rare original pamphlet issued by the anti-Bolshevik General Anton Ivanovich Denikin. From 1918 to 1920, Denikin was the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of South Russia and was responsible for civil administration in the areas occupied by his armies. He led successful campaigns in the Caucasus and the Ukraine and came within 250 miles of Moscow before being repelled by the Bolshevik forces. Denikin himself is not thought to have favored a return to a monarchy but instead advocated a unified Russian state whose form would be determined at a Constituent Assembly following the "White" victory. This brought him into conflict with the nationalist independence movements in southern Russia, and he wasted resources fighting such movements in Azerbaijan and Georgia. This extremely rare pamphlet includes a short biography of General Denikin and outlines his political program; in addition, it contains promises to the soldiers of the Red army of agrarian reform and the convocation of a Constituent Assembly. Text in Russian in Cyrillic. Postnikov 5279. Fine condition. Scarce. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

W. Blanchard (an early Los Angeles developer, first president of the Hollywood Bowl, and director of the event), Miss Hessie Hallett and her horse Arabjay (performers), James D. Phelan (politician, civic leader, and banker, who contributed personnel to the event), Kaiser Wilhelm II (photographed in the form of an effigy hung at the event), and William Taft (who, via telegram, regrets that he cannot attend). Offers a cursory glance at the event's inner workings, with telegrams, special ticket stubs and lunch coupons for participants (offered by The Patriotic Mothers of Sons in Service), a copy of the program and list of organizers, and a typed financial statement. But the highlight - and focus - of the collection are the photographs of the beautiful horses that were featured in the rodeo events, races, and fancy mounts. A day-long extravaganza that included marching bands, military maneuvers, wrestling, boxing, tug-of-war, and more, this glimpse at a moment of grandstanding captures more than a singular event in California's (and America's) history, as whispers of the tumultuous time are discernable throughout.

Joan And Peter ( Association Copy : Signed By The Author )

The First UK Printing published by Cassell and Co. in 1918. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Correct first issue blind-stamped green boards with gilt titling to the spine. The latter is slightly dulled. Mild pushing at the spine ends. Light spotting to the prelims and text block. The usual mild offsetting to the end papers. The pages remain clean and fresh. Free from erasures and inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct first issue bearing the price of 9/- net to the spine. Moderate toning to the spine and flap edges with some light edge -wear to the spine ends. It remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the author to the half-title: 'A.T.S, with love from, H G'. The recipient is Arthur Thomas (Tommy) Simmons: "Wells met Simmons at South Kensington in London whilst they were students and they became close friends, taking an active role in the Debating Society and Socialist meetings. The two became regular correspondents with Simmons taking a keen interest in Wells' writings. He was the author of numerous textbooks and was for many years the editor of 'The School world'. The description of Barnstaple's old friend in "Men Like Gods' (chapter 7, section 3) reflects the reaction of H.G. Wells to the death of Simmons." {A H.G. Wells Chronology : J.R. Hammond : Macmillan Press 1999}. Joan and Peter is a satirical portrait of late-Victorian and Edwardian England, a critique of the English educational system on the eve of World War I, a study of the impact of that war on English society, and a general reflection on the purposes of education. Wells regarded it as "one of the most ambitious" of his novels. A wonderful association copy as evidenced by the warmth of the inscription 'with love...'. Scarce with such attributes.
