Boston: The Four Seas Company, 1918 - Conrad Aiken. THE CHARNEL ROSE and Other Poems. Boston: The Four Seas COmpany, 1918. First edition of the poet's fifth volume. This is an extraordinary presentation copy with a penciled inscription from Aiken to his grandmother, "Grandma / from Conrad / November 16, 1918", on the front blank. This association is especially poignant given the tragic murder-suicide of Aiken's parents when he was eleven years old. In very good condition with bright lettering on the front panel.         Kto takoi General Denikin? - Krasnoarmeitsy!

1918 - DENIKIN, Anton Ivanovich. Kto takoi General Denikin? - Krasnoarmeitsy! No place, circa 1919. Pamphlet (7-3/4 by 4-3/4 inches), self wrappers, uncut and unopened; 32 pages. $2200.Rare original pamphlet issued by the anti-Bolshevik General Anton Ivanovich Denikin. From 1918 to 1920, Denikin was the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of South Russia and was responsible for civil administration in the areas occupied by his armies. He led successful campaigns in the Caucasus and the Ukraine and came within 250 miles of Moscow before being repelled by the Bolshevik forces. Denikin himself is not thought to have favored a return to a monarchy but instead advocated a unified Russian state whose form would be determined at a Constituent Assembly following the "White" victory. This brought him into conflict with the nationalist independence movements in southern Russia, and he wasted resources fighting such movements in Azerbaijan and Georgia. This extremely rare pamphlet includes a short biography of General Denikin and outlines his political program; in addition, it contains promises to the soldiers of the Red army of agrarian reform and the convocation of a Constituent Assembly. Text in Russian in Cyrillic. Postnikov 5279. Fine condition. Scarce. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Collection of Photographs and Ephemera Relating to a Soldiers and Sailors Carnival and Field Day. Los Angeles, 1918.

1918. 15 loose black leaves with b/w photographs (mostly 8" x 10") and ephemera (letters, small advertising posters, telegrams, ticket stubs) adhered to rectos and versos; 20 photographs in all. Leaves quite brittle and chipped at the edges; some photographs a little wavy (from the adhesive) or creased, but for the most part clean, and always intelligible; large tear across one of the posters, fragile, but with no loss. Centered around a Carnival and Field Day, this collection features photographs of, or correspondence from, some famous characters: Tom Mix (an actor in early Western movies, who performed at the event), F. W. Blanchard (an early Los Angeles developer, first president of the Hollywood Bowl, and director of the event), Miss Hessie Hallett and her horse Arabjay (performers), James D. Phelan (politician, civic leader, and banker, who contributed personnel to the event), Kaiser Wilhelm II (photographed in the form of an effigy hung at the event), and William Taft (who, via telegram, regrets that he cannot attend). Offers a cursory glance at the event's inner workings, with telegrams, special ticket stubs and lunch coupons for participants (offered by The Patriotic Mothers of Sons in Service), a copy of the program and list of organizers, and a typed financial statement. But the highlight - and focus - of the collection are the photographs of the beautiful horses that were featured in the rodeo events, races, and fancy mounts. A day-long extravaganza that included marching bands, military maneuvers, wrestling, boxing, tug-of-war, and more, this glimpse at a moment of grandstanding captures more than a singular event in California's (and America's) history, as whispers of the tumultuous time are discernable throughout.

Joan And Peter ( Association Copy : Signed By The Author )

The First UK Printing published by Cassell and Co. in 1918. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Correct first issue blind-stamped green boards with gilt titling to the spine. The latter is slightly dulled. Mild pushing at the spine ends. Light spotting to the prelims and text block. The usual mild offsetting to the end papers. The pages remain clean and fresh. Free from erasures and inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct first issue bearing the price of 9/- net to the spine. Moderate toning to the spine and flap edges with some light edge -wear to the spine ends. It remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the author to the half-title: 'A.T.S, with love from, H G'. The recipient is Arthur Thomas (Tommy) Simmons: "Wells met Simmons at South Kensington in London whilst they were students and they became close friends, taking an active role in the Debating Society and Socialist meetings. The two became regular correspondents with Simmons taking a keen interest in Wells' writings. He was the author of numerous textbooks and was for many years the editor of 'The School world'. The description of Barnstaple's old friend in "Men Like Gods' (chapter 7, section 3) reflects the reaction of H.G. Wells to the death of Simmons." {A H.G. Wells Chronology : J.R. Hammond : Macmillan Press 1999}. Joan and Peter is a satirical portrait of late-Victorian and Edwardian England, a critique of the English educational system on the eve of World War I, a study of the impact of that war on English society, and a general reflection on the purposes of education. Wells regarded it as "one of the most ambitious" of his novels. A wonderful association copy as evidenced by the warmth of the inscription 'with love...'. Scarce with such attributes.

Or.-Hlwd. mit handkolorierter Deckelillustration; etw. bestoßen u. abgegriffen, Deckel stärker braunfleckig, Kolorit verblasst.

      - Murken, Seidmann-Freud 6; Stuck-Villa II, 304; Hoffmann/Thiele, "Künstler illustrieren Bilderbücher" 193; Valentin Merkelbach in: Das Bilderbuch, S. 301ff. Typed letter signed. Whitehall, 25. I. 1918.

1918. 4to. 1½ pp. on double leaf. As Minister of Munitions, a stern wartime letter to his recalcitrant colleague Joseph Paton Maclay, 1st Baron Maclay (1857-1951), on gaining essential military raw material from Spain and Narvik (Norway): "Your letter of the 22nd inst. does nothing to relieve my anxiety. Whether importations of Ore from Northern Spain or from Narvick are considered, it is perfectly clear that shipments are now proceeding at a rate which must lead to a complete breakdown in the Iron and Steel production and so affect every industry concerned in the prosecution of the war. The Nitrate position is even more serious than the iron and steel, because in this case the whole supply is seaborne, and the entire process of ammunition filling will come to an abrupt arrest. It is, further, very difficult for me to proceed without any idea of what the future has in store. I failed entirely to obtain any answer on this point from your Department. I have to make an enormous series of arrangements for the supply of the Army which depend absolutely upon Raw Material, and we cannot be told even generally within what limits we may expect to be supplied. I have been pressing for information on this vital point for more than three months without receiving anything in return except your invariable courtesy. I really do not know what to do [...] As it is we weem to be moving forward to a complete administrative breakdown [...]". - On stationery with printed letterhead of the Ministry of Munitions; punched holes at top left corner.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1918 - 1918 Original Hardback Wisden. Very Good Condition. 9/10

Hi, Here we have a very rare 1918 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. This is a fabulous book, the only downside and this is being very picky is a bookplate has been removed from the front left page. You probably wouldn't notice but I have to point it out. The front board is superb, hardly a mark and bright gilt, the spine cloth is excellent with bright gilt, it really is a top book. Super rear board too. Excellent, original hinges, and very clean inside just an ex owners name to the front right pastedown. If being picky there is a slight bobbling to front board cloth and inside a sort of corrigated iron appearance for a couple of pages. A wisden to own and brag about. Average 1918s are appearing on line at 5k , no need to pay that much.

London: A. L. Humphreys, 1918. Quarto. Contemporary three quarter navy blue crushed levant and paper boards, t.e.g., original wrappers bound in, by Riviere. Joints a bit rubbed and strained, but a very good copy. First edition of the author's second (or possibly first) separate publication, published in the same year, and in the same format, as her appreciation of Amy Lowell. This is one of a very few copies specially printed on handmade paper, and specially bound, for the author's use. Very scarce.
