Über die spezielle und die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie (Gemeinverständlich).

Braunschweig: Freidr. Vieweg & Sohn, 1918. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Einstein, of the third edition (first published the previous year) of his 'popular account' (Gemeinverständlich) of relativity theory, which remains one of the most lucid explanations of the special and general theories ever written. According to the preface (in the first edition dated December, 1916), its aim was to provide "an exact insight into the theory of relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics ... The author has spared himself no pains in his endeavor to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form, and on the whole, in the sequence and connection in which they actually originated". The work is divided into three parts: the first on special relativity, the second on general relativity, and the third on the application of relativity to cosmology. This third edition is important as it is the first to contain a discussion of the universe as a whole (sections 30-32), and also the first to contain the two appendices "Simple Derivation of the Lorentz Transformation" (as a supplement to section 11) and "Minkowski's Four-Dimensional Space ('World')" (as a supplement to section 17). Provenance: Inscribed Meinem Lieben Freunden und Prozessgegner zum freundlichen Gedanken von seinem A. Einstein in Einstein's hand on title and dated February 14, 1919. "After submitting the final version of his general theory of relativity in November 1915, Einstein began to write a comprehensive summary of the theory for the scientific community. At that time he was already thinking about writing a popular book on relativity--both the special and the general--as he indicated in a letter to his close friend Michele Besso, quoted in the epigraph. Einstein completed the manuscript in December, and the booklet (as he referred to it) Relativity: The Special and the General Theory (A Popular Account) was published in German in the spring of 1917. "Einstein believed that the laws of nature could be formulated in a number of simple basic principles, and this quest for simplicity characterized his scientific activities. He also believed that it was his duty to explain these principles in simple terms to the general public and to convey the happiness and satisfaction that understanding them can generate. As Einstein stated in the short introduction to his booklet, he "spared himself no pains in his endeavour to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form," yet the book is not popular in the usual sense. It may be popular in its format, in its dialogue with the reader, in its examples from daily life, and in the lack of mathematical formulas, but it does not compromise on scientific rigor. The reader soon discovers that an intellectual effort is required to follow the flow of Einstein's thoughts and arguments. "In his brief introduction, Einstein also said that in the interest of clarity, he repeated himself frequently "without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation." To justify this approach, Einstein referred to the brilliant physicist Ludwig Boltzmann, "according to whom, matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler." Despite this assertion, the booklet is written with sophistication and elegance. The path from Newtonian mechanics to special relativity and then to general relativity--followed by its immediate consequences-- emerges as an exciting intellectual odyssey. There is hardly any trace of Einstein's own bumpy road or of the difficulties he encountered on the way to this achievement. "However, Einstein was not happy with the result. In a letter to Besso he wrote: "The description has turned out quite wooden. In the future, I shall leave writing to someone else whose speech comes more easily than mine and whose body is more in order." Jokingly, he later remarked that the description Gemeinverstandlich (generally understandable), on the cover of the booklet, should read Gemeinunverstandlich (generally not understandable). "Despite Einstein's self-criticism the booklet was a great success: 14 German editions appeared between 1917 and 1922, and a total of 15 were published in German during his lifetime. Strangely, though, the 15th edition, which appeared in 1954, was called the 16th instead. After the confirmation of the bending of light, the booklet was also published in many foreign languages ... "Einstein's booklet is a unique document in the history of science writing. It is an attempt to enable the general reader with no background in physics to grasp and appreciate the grandeur of one of the most sophisticated intellectual achievements of the human mind and thereby to grant him or her, as Einstein puts it, "a few happy hours of suggestive thought"" (Introduction to the 100th Anniversary Edition. Princeton University Press, 2017). 8vo (228 x 148 mm), pp. iv, 83, [1:blank]. Original printed wrappers. Light wear to backstrip, corners a little soft.

1918. Sem's Account of a Notable Treason Trial [Trial]. Bolo, Paul [d. 1918], Defendant. Sem [Gorsat (Goursat), Georges (1863-1934)]. Affaire Bola-Pacha: 68 Croquis d'Audience par Sem. [Paris: S.n., c. 1918]. 68 lithographic images on 24 sheets and a sheet of captions in a printed wrapper housed in a printed folder. 12-1/2" x 10." Light soiling and edgewear to outer folder, a few minor tears along fold lines, short minor tear to spine of inner folder, light stain to caption sheet, plates fine. $1,750. * The Bolo Pasha affair involved a French traitor, Paul Bolo, who convinced the Egyptian Khedive (Viceroy), Abbas Hilmi, to sponsor an anti-war movement in France through the press using $2,500,000 raised from German sources. (Granted the title Pasha by the Khedive, Bolo renamed himself Bolo Pasha.) Convicted of treason, he was executed by a firing squad in April 1918. Sem's caricatures portray the judge, defendant, witnesses and judges at various points in the trial. Gorsat, or Goursat, was a French caricaturist and illustrator active from the late nineteenth century to 1934. His lasting fame rests on his depictions of French ruling class and French high society during the Belle Epoque. He was a regular contributor to the leading French periodicals, produced albums of caricatures depicting current events and social life and designed several path-breaking advertisements. His work is highly esteemed today.

        Geist der Utopie.

Munich: Duncker & Humblot, 1918. Octavo, uncut and largely unopened; a superb copy in paper wrappers, gilt decorations to front cover, preserved in morocco-backed cloth box. First edition of Bloch's first book, and rare. Bloch's treatise on the utopian spirit is the foundation work of his long career investigating utopia: Manuel called him 'the most famous contemporary commentator on the utopian propensity.'Geist der Utopie sketches out Bloch's belief in the overcoming of alienation through utopia, particularly through his formulation of the 'Not-Yet-Conscious.' Moreover, it presents a vigorous call to move past Romantic Sehnsucht (regret at the impossibility of rationality) and to build impossibly towards the horizon: 'Nun haben wir zu beginnen.' Although for some time relatively unknown in the English-speaking world, the 1995 publication of The Principle of Hope by MIT heralded a renewed interest in Bloch, and saw him assume an intellectual position alongside his better known friends and colleagues Walter Benjamin and George Lukacs. Geist der Utopie has finally been released in English translation by Stanford University Press.Bloch (1885-1977) was one of the great Marxist philosophers of the twentieth century. Exiled to the United States in 1933, he returned to Leipzig in 1948 to become professor of philosophy. Although the publication of the early volumes of his major work, Das Princip Hoffnung, was greeted with enthusiasm, the reception of the third and final volume was negative, indeed, it was deemed to be suspect and un-marxist. By 1961 his position had deteriorated to such a point that he was once more forced to flee, this time becoming professor at Tübingen in then West Germany. Wrappers lightly worn.

        THE TALE OF JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE.

Original grey boards with mounted illustration. First edition; first issue, but with the 'N' in London.A near fine copy. The title-page of this work is undated, but a First Edition of December 1918 can be determined by the absence of Ltd from Warne's imprint on the title-page. The second printing was issued in June 1919, when Ltd was added to the imprint. Much is made of the missing 'N' from London that some copies have. Clearly, this printing error does not constitute a separate edition, it merely indicates that a number of the first printing escaped from the press before the error was spotted.

Ministry of Munitions of War. H.M. Factory, Gretna. Description of Plant and Process.

Dumfries: Printed for HMSO by J. Maxwell & Son, 1918 - Foolscap quarto (338 × 208 mm) Original maroon skiver, title gilt to the upper board within panel of swags in blind. Rubbed at the extremities, and neatly rebacked, contents clean and sound. Profusely illustrated with diagrams, plans and sketch-maps, many of them folding, some coloured, and a number of half-tone plates from photographs including extensive panoramas of the works and the cordite ranges. First and only edition. The massive factory site, which included the two purpose-built townships of Gretna and Eastriggs, was established as a response to the Shell Crisis of 1915. The plant's product was cordite - a smokeless propellant explosive comprised of a mixture of nitro-glycerine and nitro-cellulose, or gun cotton, and described by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle after a visit to the site as "The Devil's Porridge" - and within a year of commencing production it was turning out 800 tons a week, more than all the other factories in Britain combined. Two thirds of the close 17,000 workers were women. The site was closed at the end of the war, the buildings demolished, eventually being parcelled off into 700 lots and sold off in the 1920s. A remarkably detailed technical account of this vital contribution to victory in World War I, this copy that of Lord Moulton who was Director General of the Explosive Supply Department. Uncommon, just four copies recorded on OCLC. [Attributes: First Edition]

        THE TALE OF JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE.

Original grey boards with mounted illustration.Original printed dust-wrapper. First edition. First issue, but with the 'N' in London. Wrapper chipped and worn; little bumped at top outer corner; else a near fine copy. The title-page of this work is undated, but a First Edition of December 1918 can be determined by the absence of Ltd from Warne's imprint on the title-page. The second printing was issued in June 1919, when Ltd was added to the imprint. Much is made of the missing N from London that some copies have. Clearly, this printing error does not constitute a separate edition, it merely attests that a number of the first printing escaped from the press before the error was spotted.

        Plane Tales from the Skies.

London: Cassell and Company, 1918. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.x; 182. Publisher's red cloth with black titles to spine and upper board, in pictorial dust-jacket designed by G.H. Tavis. A collection of fact-based short stories about early aerial combat in WWI, mostly on the Western Front. Faint ghost of a stamp to front pastedown, cheap grey paper stock has some occasional spotting. Slight spotting to endpapers. Some marks to the cloth at the spine. Dust-jacket shows very well, with a crease to the front panel, loss at the top and bottom of the spine panel and to the top left and bottom right corners of the rear panel, creasing and nicking along the top and bottom edges of the dust-wrapper. Quite heavy spotting to spine panel. A very good example, exceedingly scarce in its dust-jacket. Aside from being an author, Blake was a pioneer aviator who led the first attempted circumnavigation of the globe by air in 1922, and motored around both South America and the Central African Federation in a Standard Vanguard.

On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra.

First editions, author's presentation offprints, inscribed. Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos, 1918. Rare inscribed presentation-offprint issues with 'Separate Copy' printed on the front wrappers. The third part, published in 1922, lacks here for obvious reasons [see below]. It was in this fundamental paper that Bohr first gave a clear formulation of, and fully utilized, his 'correspondence principle'. Besides his derivation of the Balmer formula (1913), this is by many considered to be Bohr's greatest contribution to physics. Bohr's correspondence principle (or postulate) states in general that although classical physics is incomplete there must be a fundamental analogy between quantum theory and classical physics. Actually Bohr at first referred to the postulate as the 'principle of analogy'. It was Bohr's underlying idea that the new quantum theory must satisfy in the limiting cases, e.g., when frequencies v tend to zero or quantum numbers n??, that it's predictions approximate those of classical physics. When studying different quantum theoretic problems one can thus utilize already established facts from what classical physics predicts in that particular situation, and then work backwards to arrive at new quantum theoretic rules for the system. In this major paper Bohr penetrated far into the quantum theory of line-spectra of the Hydrogen atom, and other elements, by using his principle and the classical theory of electrodynamics. Bohr's method was the principle guide to the progress of quantum theory during the early twenties, until it was finally built into the foundation of quantum mechanics. Provenance: Part 1 inscribed in Bohr's hand: "Hernn Professor Dr. E. Gehrke / Hochachtungsvoll / vom / Verfasser", Part 2 with faint rubberstamp "Fra Forfatteren", both parts inscribed (probably by Gehrke) "Bohr 1918". Ernst Gehrcke (1878-1960) spent most of his scientific career on the relation between electricity and gasses, this basic research being important for the later development of gas-filled light bulbs and tubes. He is most well known for criticism of the general theory of relativity as outlined by Einstein in 1916. Most discussion thereon can be found in German newspapers after a conference on August 24, 1920, featuring lectures against this theory. This was the first and only event of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutscher Naturforscher zur Erhaltung reiner Wissenschaft. Philipp Lenard [Nobel-prize 1905 for his work on cathode rays] lended credibility to the Society. Gehrcke was the major speaker. Later Anti-Semitism and anti-theoretical physics (especially with respect to the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics) were core elements of the Deutsche Physik movement to which Gehrcke contributed Die massensuggestion der relativitätstheorie (1924). Lenard proposed Gehrcke for the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921, which ultimately was awarded to Einstein in the same year. In this perspective it can be understood, that Bohr did not send Gehrcke an offprint of the 3rd part in 1922, thus resulting in the set presently offered. Two parts. 4to: (270 x 215 mm). 118 pp. Offprints from: 'Mémoires de l'Académie Royale des Sciences et des Lettres de Danemark'. Original printed wrappers, light wear and chipping, spine strip of second part worn and front wrapper nearly split. In all a fine and unretsored set.

        Codorniu Spanish Champagne Advertising Fan.

Folding fan, paper with wooden slats. A little damage to one slat otherwise in very good condition. Mounted in a glazed box. An interesting advertising piece. The fan has a drawing by José Navarro y Llorens of a bottle of Raventos Codorniu as the body for a car with added wheels and steering wheel, and with a driver and passender astride the bottle. The fan was clearly meant for the British market with the text on the reverse reading "Codorniu Spanish Champagne. The Favourite Wine of H.M. King and Queen of Spain. First Prizes in all Expositions. Ask for it." In 1872, Josep Raventós produced cava for the first time in Spain using the ?Traditional Method? and established a completely new industry in the Alt Penedès region. The Codorníu cellars at Sant Sadurní d'Anoia were built on the orders of Manuel Raventós between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (1895-1915). He chose the renowned Catalán architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, to design the facility. At that time Codorníu was producing about 100,000 bottles of cava per year. Born in Valencia in 1867, José Navarro Lloréns was influenced by several of Spain's greatest Romantic and Impressionist masters, including Mariano Fortuny and Joaquín Sorolla. With an innate talent for capturing the effects of light and colour, Navarro Llorens travelled to Morocco where he was able to exercise this aptitude to its fullest extent. The bright North African sun illuminated his palette, offering new patterns of clarity, colour and shadow. Navarro Llorens also discovered in Morocco a fresh subject matter. While he had always had a proclivity for depicting scenes of everyday life, the new themes he found in Morocco gave the artist the inspiration to compose some of his most beautiful and jewel-like canvases.

Analyse babylonienne. Originalholzschnitt.
