PROPAGANDA - WORLD WAR I / AFRICA: Vier Jahre Weltkeirg. 4. Seekrieg—kolonien. [Four Years World War. 4. Naval War – Colonies].

Berlin, . 1918 - Broadside: Lithograph in 2 colours (Very Good, just some very light even toning), 46 x 59 cm (18 x 23 inches). An unusual German propaganda broadside published in Berlin near the end of World War I, with pictographic tables detailing the naval and air war, plus cartographic insets showcasing the war in Africa. - This rare and unusual broadside was printed in Berlin in July 1918, when it was already clear that Germany would inevitably loose the war, but while many Germans still held out hope for a decent settlement. Its propagandist thrust is to show the impressive successes that the German forces had achieved in the air and naval aspects of the war, as well as the conflict in Africa (as opposed to the horrendous situation regarding the unmentioned land war), in an effort to convince Germans to fight hard in order ensure the best possible outcome once the final Armistice was signed. This broadside is the fourth issue of a series of separately issued propaganda prints on the war published by the Berlin map sellers Dietrich Reimer. Curiously, this particular work was designed by Rektor Haselberger, a schoolmaster from Velden, located near the German capital. The work is divided into two general parts; with most of the composition being dedicated to a large pictographic chart detailing Germany’s military achievements in the conflict. The chart is divided into quarters, one for each year of the war, which are further subdivided into months. The top register, entitled ‘Luftrangriffe auf England’ (Air Raids upon England), details whether the raids were conducted by airplanes or blimps, as represented by pictographic symbols. The larger register below, ‘Seekrieg’ (Sea War), details the Allied ships sunk by German U-Boats, with each ship being individually labeled. It concludes with the statistics that by June 1918 the German Kriegsmarine had sunk 258 Allied ships amounting to 17.73 million tonnes. The register below that, ‘Greignisse in den kolonien’ [(in the Colonies), labels events in the German African colonies, which are represented in the three maps, on the right side of the composition. The final register, at the bottom, ‘Kriegsanleihe’ [War Loans], shows Germany’s progressively escalating war debt, which by the summer of 1918 had reached 15 Billion Marks, an astounding sum for the time. Contemporary maps focusing upon World War I in Africa are scarce, as this aspect of the conflict was always overshadowed by the war in Europe. That being said, the conflict in Africa was fascinating, and contrary to public perception, the Germans actually got the better of the Allies, at least in East and Southern Africa. Each of the trio of maps details a different theatre in the war, being ‘Deutsche-Südwestafrika’ (Namibia); ‘Kamerun’ (Cameroon); and the map entitled ‘Deutsche helden in Ostafrika’ (German Heros in East Africa). Each map presents the forces of the Schutztruppe (literally ‘protection force’), being the name for the German colonial army, in black; while the forces of the ‘Feind’ (Enemy), being mainly the British and their Belgian and Portuguese allies, are shown in orange. The top two maps show how the Schutztruppe were routed in Cameroon and Namibia; however, the war took a very different path in East and Southern Africa. Early in the war, the British forces, under the overall command of General Jan Smuts, assumed that they would easily be able to crush the outrageously outnumbered and outgunned Schutztruppe forces in German East Africa (Tanzania). However, they did not bargain with General Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck (1870 - 1964), the leader of the German forces in the region. Lettow-Vorbeck’s miniscule nomadic force of 14,000 German and Askari (African) troops mounted one of the World’s most impressive guerilla campaigns, tying down as many as 300,000 British, Belgian and Portuguese fighters. Lettow-Vorbeck played an ingenious game of cat and mouse, staging daring raids upon Allied positions, before suddenly disappearing int

Über die spezielle und die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie (Gemeinverständlich).

Braunschweig: Freidr. Vieweg & Sohn, 1918. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Einstein, of the third edition (first published the previous year) of his 'popular account' (Gemeinverständlich) of relativity theory, which remains one of the most lucid explanations of the special and general theories ever written. According to the preface (in the first edition dated December, 1916), its aim was to provide "an exact insight into the theory of relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics ... The author has spared himself no pains in his endeavor to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form, and on the whole, in the sequence and connection in which they actually originated". The work is divided into three parts: the first on special relativity, the second on general relativity, and the third on the application of relativity to cosmology. This third edition is important as it is the first to contain a discussion of the universe as a whole (sections 30-32), and also the first to contain the two appendices "Simple Derivation of the Lorentz Transformation" (as a supplement to section 11) and "Minkowski's Four-Dimensional Space ('World')" (as a supplement to section 17). Provenance: Inscribed Meinem Lieben Freunden und Prozessgegner zum freundlichen Gedanken von seinem A. Einstein in Einstein's hand on title and dated February 14, 1919. "After submitting the final version of his general theory of relativity in November 1915, Einstein began to write a comprehensive summary of the theory for the scientific community. At that time he was already thinking about writing a popular book on relativity--both the special and the general--as he indicated in a letter to his close friend Michele Besso, quoted in the epigraph. Einstein completed the manuscript in December, and the booklet (as he referred to it) Relativity: The Special and the General Theory (A Popular Account) was published in German in the spring of 1917. "Einstein believed that the laws of nature could be formulated in a number of simple basic principles, and this quest for simplicity characterized his scientific activities. He also believed that it was his duty to explain these principles in simple terms to the general public and to convey the happiness and satisfaction that understanding them can generate. As Einstein stated in the short introduction to his booklet, he "spared himself no pains in his endeavour to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form," yet the book is not popular in the usual sense. It may be popular in its format, in its dialogue with the reader, in its examples from daily life, and in the lack of mathematical formulas, but it does not compromise on scientific rigor. The reader soon discovers that an intellectual effort is required to follow the flow of Einstein's thoughts and arguments. "In his brief introduction, Einstein also said that in the interest of clarity, he repeated himself frequently "without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation." To justify this approach, Einstein referred to the brilliant physicist Ludwig Boltzmann, "according to whom, matters of elegance ought to be left to the tailor and to the cobbler." Despite this assertion, the booklet is written with sophistication and elegance. The path from Newtonian mechanics to special relativity and then to general relativity--followed by its immediate consequences-- emerges as an exciting intellectual odyssey. There is hardly any trace of Einstein's own bumpy road or of the difficulties he encountered on the way to this achievement. "However, Einstein was not happy with the result. In a letter to Besso he wrote: "The description has turned out quite wooden. In the future, I shall leave writing to someone else whose speech comes more easily than mine and whose body is more in order." Jokingly, he later remarked that the description Gemeinverstandlich (generally understandable), on the cover of the booklet, should read Gemeinunverstandlich (generally not understandable). "Despite Einstein's self-criticism the booklet was a great success: 14 German editions appeared between 1917 and 1922, and a total of 15 were published in German during his lifetime. Strangely, though, the 15th edition, which appeared in 1954, was called the 16th instead. After the confirmation of the bending of light, the booklet was also published in many foreign languages ... "Einstein's booklet is a unique document in the history of science writing. It is an attempt to enable the general reader with no background in physics to grasp and appreciate the grandeur of one of the most sophisticated intellectual achievements of the human mind and thereby to grant him or her, as Einstein puts it, "a few happy hours of suggestive thought"" (Introduction to the 100th Anniversary Edition. Princeton University Press, 2017). 8vo (228 x 148 mm), pp. iv, 83, [1:blank]. Original printed wrappers. Light wear to backstrip, corners a little soft.

        General Denikin o zemel'nom voprosie.

1918. DENIKIN, Anton Ivanovich. General Denikin o zemelÂ’nom voprosie. No place, circa 1919. Broadside, measuring 12 by 18 inches, printed on recto only. $1800.Rare original printed broadside issued by the anti-Bolshevik General Anton Ivanovich Denikin. Of extreme rarity. From 1918 to 1920, Denikin was the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of South Russia and was responsible for civil administration in the areas occupied by his armies. He led successful campaigns in the Caucasus and the Ukraine and came within 250 miles of Moscow before being repelled by the Bolshevik forces. Denikin himself is not thought to have favored a return to a monarchy but instead advocated a unified Russian state whose form would be determined at a Constituent Assembly following the “White” victory. This brought him into conflict with the nationalist independence movements in southern Russia, and he wasted resources fighting such movements in Azerbaijan and Georgia. This broadside is the first printing (in large format for posting) of General DenikinÂ’s agrarian program, which was carried out in the regions of southern Russia under his jurisdiction. This broadside printing preceding the publication, along with “General Denikin o rabochem voprosie” in the pamphlet “Za chto my boremsia” (The Aims of our Struggle). Text in Russian. Postnikov 4922. Fragile broadside split along fold lines into four pieces. Exceptionally rare.

A La Belle Édition, 1918. Originalausgabe.

A Book of Congo Recipes. Compiled by the Ladies of the A.P.C.M. Luebo, Congo Belge, Africa

Luebo, Congo Belge: The J. Leighton Wilson Printing Office, 1918. Octavo-sized, stapled booklet, 42 pages. First and only edition. A missionary cookbook, from the American Presbyterian Congo Mission located in Luebo, Congo. The preface states that the "recipes in this book have been collected to enable our Missionaries to make as free and varied use of native foodstuffs as possible, and only such recipes as call in whole or in part for native products have been included in the collection. Some of the recipes have been adopted from home cook books, some are original with the Ladies of the A.P.C.M. and others contributed by ladies of the Lower Congo Mission." Luebo was rivertown in the Kasai Province, a south-central region of the Belgian Congo, and the site of the Belgian Trading Company, through which massive amounts of elephant ivory and rubber were extracted. In 1918, the year of this book's publication, the Belgian Congo had existed for just ten years, in part a reaction to King Leopold's prior brutal control under the name the Congo Free State. Missionary groups, like the A.P.C.M. provided one of the three controlling interests in the Belgian Congo, called the trinité coloniale: the state, private companies, and missionaries. The text block, printed on pale green paper, is sound, although it shows signs of chipping and insect predation to the first few leaves. Staples rusty. The front and rear wrapper panels, both printed, are detached and heavily chipped. But all text is unaffected and legible. With the pencil inscription of a previous owner, "loaned to Mother Clark, re. Jan 10-32". A miraculous survival. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies].
