On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra.

First editions, author's presentation offprints, inscribed. Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos, 1918. Rare inscribed presentation-offprint issues with 'Separate Copy' printed on the front wrappers. The third part, published in 1922, lacks here for obvious reasons [see below]. It was in this fundamental paper that Bohr first gave a clear formulation of, and fully utilized, his 'correspondence principle'. Besides his derivation of the Balmer formula (1913), this is by many considered to be Bohr's greatest contribution to physics. Bohr's correspondence principle (or postulate) states in general that although classical physics is incomplete there must be a fundamental analogy between quantum theory and classical physics. Actually Bohr at first referred to the postulate as the 'principle of analogy'. It was Bohr's underlying idea that the new quantum theory must satisfy in the limiting cases, e.g., when frequencies v tend to zero or quantum numbers n??, that it's predictions approximate those of classical physics. When studying different quantum theoretic problems one can thus utilize already established facts from what classical physics predicts in that particular situation, and then work backwards to arrive at new quantum theoretic rules for the system. In this major paper Bohr penetrated far into the quantum theory of line-spectra of the Hydrogen atom, and other elements, by using his principle and the classical theory of electrodynamics. Bohr's method was the principle guide to the progress of quantum theory during the early twenties, until it was finally built into the foundation of quantum mechanics. Provenance: Part 1 inscribed in Bohr's hand: "Hernn Professor Dr. E. Gehrke / Hochachtungsvoll / vom / Verfasser", Part 2 with faint rubberstamp "Fra Forfatteren", both parts inscribed (probably by Gehrke) "Bohr 1918". Ernst Gehrcke (1878-1960) spent most of his scientific career on the relation between electricity and gasses, this basic research being important for the later development of gas-filled light bulbs and tubes. He is most well known for criticism of the general theory of relativity as outlined by Einstein in 1916. Most discussion thereon can be found in German newspapers after a conference on August 24, 1920, featuring lectures against this theory. This was the first and only event of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutscher Naturforscher zur Erhaltung reiner Wissenschaft. Philipp Lenard [Nobel-prize 1905 for his work on cathode rays] lended credibility to the Society. Gehrcke was the major speaker. Later Anti-Semitism and anti-theoretical physics (especially with respect to the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics) were core elements of the Deutsche Physik movement to which Gehrcke contributed Die massensuggestion der relativitätstheorie (1924). Lenard proposed Gehrcke for the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921, which ultimately was awarded to Einstein in the same year. In this perspective it can be understood, that Bohr did not send Gehrcke an offprint of the 3rd part in 1922, thus resulting in the set presently offered. Two parts. Original printed wrappers, light wear and chipping, spine strip of second part worn and front wrapper nearly split. In all a fine and unretsored set.

        Codorniu Spanish Champagne Advertising Fan.

Folding fan, paper with wooden slats. A little damage to one slat otherwise in very good condition. Mounted in a glazed box. An interesting advertising piece. The fan has a drawing by José Navarro y Llorens of a bottle of Raventos Codorniu as the body for a car with added wheels and steering wheel, and with a driver and passender astride the bottle. The fan was clearly meant for the British market with the text on the reverse reading "Codorniu Spanish Champagne. The Favourite Wine of H.M. King and Queen of Spain. First Prizes in all Expositions. Ask for it." In 1872, Josep Raventós produced cava for the first time in Spain using the ?Traditional Method? and established a completely new industry in the Alt Penedès region. The Codorníu cellars at Sant Sadurní d'Anoia were built on the orders of Manuel Raventós between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (1895-1915). He chose the renowned Catalán architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, to design the facility. At that time Codorníu was producing about 100,000 bottles of cava per year. Born in Valencia in 1867, José Navarro Lloréns was influenced by several of Spain's greatest Romantic and Impressionist masters, including Mariano Fortuny and Joaquín Sorolla. With an innate talent for capturing the effects of light and colour, Navarro Llorens travelled to Morocco where he was able to exercise this aptitude to its fullest extent. The bright North African sun illuminated his palette, offering new patterns of clarity, colour and shadow. Navarro Llorens also discovered in Morocco a fresh subject matter. While he had always had a proclivity for depicting scenes of everyday life, the new themes he found in Morocco gave the artist the inspiration to compose some of his most beautiful and jewel-like canvases.

Analyse babylonienne. Originalholzschnitt.

Dezember 1918 Nr. 30, 11. Dezember 1918.

Insgesamt guter Zustand.         POLAND: MAPA POLSKI I KRAJÓW O?CIENNYCH - WYDANIE TRZECIE. OPRACOWA? STANIS?AW MAX. WYDANI M. ARCTA.

Warsaw [H Sk?odowski] 1918 - Chromolithograph mounted on original linen, with original red cloth edging, with additional hand-made blue colouring (Soft folds with small tears and tiny loss of image, slightly dusty, otherwise in a good condition) 97 x 100 cm (38.2 x 39.4 inches). ‘The Birth of Modern Poland on a map’ - an excellent wall map of Poland and surrounding regions, published in Warsaw near the end of World War I, when Poland’s fate was unknown and its boundaries undefined; however, the present example is uniquely augmented with manuscript shading, defining the re-born independent Polish state with its full 1922 borders. This fine wall map of Poland and surrounding regions was drafted by Stanis?aw Max and published in Warsaw in 1918, near the end of World War I. The Polish language map provides excellent topographic detail of a vast region extending from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, as well as labeling all major towns and roads. As the boundaries in the region were then in state of flux, the printed map labels the approximate locations of countries and regions, but is intentionally unclear as to the locations of most international boundaries, especially that of Poland (which in 1918 was under German occupation, but would soon be liberated by wars of independence). Importantly, the present example of the map is uniquely augmented in manuscript, in outlining and shading in green crayon, in order to showcase the territory of the Second Polish Republic, the first truly independent Polish state formed since 1795, with its borders as confirmed by treaties in 1922. In this sense, the map brilliantly showcases the birth of modern Poland. Historical Context: The Rebirth of Poland - The end of World War I (1914-8) hailed the rebirth of Poland as an independent state, after generations of foreign subjugation. In 1795, following the last of the three Partitions of the once mighty Kingdom of Poland, the nation ceased to exist as an independent entity, its territory being divided between Prussia, Russia and the Austrian Hapsburg Empire. While the Prussians and Austrians more or less absorbed the parts of Poland in their possession into their empires, the Russians set up the state of Congress Poland, which in reality was only a puppet state of Russia. While a part of Poland briefly held some autonomy as a French client state, known as the Duchy of Warsaw, from 1807 to 1815, and Polish Rebellions against Russian rule in Congress Poland occurred in 1830-1 and 1863-4, Polish independence remained elusive. To make a long story short, during World War I, Germany had the upper hand over Russia on the Eastern front, overrunning the Polish lands and extending its occupation into Russian territory beyond Minsk. The new Soviet regime in Russia sued for peace, and signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 3, 1918) with Germany. This placed the new border between Germany and Russia along the ‘Brest-Litovsk Line’, which ran to the east of Lublin, Bia?ystok and Vilnius. The majority of Polish lands were thus under German control, with a portion in the south remaining under Austro-Hungarian rule. However in the month leading up to Germany and Austria-Hungary’s final surrender to the Western Allies on November 11, 1918, Austro-German control over much the Polish lands disintegrated. Polish leaders declared their intention to declare an independent Polish state, a move that would be supported by the Western Allies at the Treaty of Versailles deliberations. However, the Polish leadership knew that this move would be hotly contested by Poland’s neighbors, and so it organized rapid and effective military conscription and mobilization. Poland would have to fight on several fronts, for both its survival and to obtain the geographical boundaries it desired, resulting in a series of relatively short, sharp wars. In what became known as the Greater Poland Uprising (1918-1919), Poles in the former Grand Duchy of Posen (Pozna?) overthrew German rule, resulting in the region becoming P

Trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and Frank Calderon's School of Amazing Painting, Appleton worked in delicate watercolors, pen and wash, and black and white pen illustrations. She produced more than 150 books for children but also illustrated William Blake's Songs of Innocence. Her best known books are probably the "Josephine" books by Mrs. H.C. Cradock, in which Appleton used her famous 'child's perspective' of floor level illustrations. Her work was widely exhibited in British art galleries, including the prestigious Royal Academy.       Proprietors, Fleetway House, Farringdon Street. (Amalgamated Press.) 1918-32 - Stabbed as issued; one without wraps, one front wrap torn away, a few tears and spine splitting and a little foxing in some issues, but generally in good condition. A very good representative run of this St Frank?s school story series almost entirely written by Edwy Searles Brooks. The Wartime price is a penny halfpenny in smaller format, increasing to twopence in 1922. This set unfortunately lacks the coloured portraits of 1929 test cricketers and obviously is without the metal badges and models. After this run the series was combined with ?The Gem?.         SPRINGTIDE OF LIFE: POEMS OF CHILDHOOD

      - (RACKHAM,ARTHUR)illus. SPRINGTIDE OF LIFE: POEMS OF CHILDHOOD by Algernon Swinburne. London: Heinemann (1918). 4to, green gilt cloth, near Fine. 1st edition. Featuring 8 beautiful color plates and 52 black & whitess by Rackham. Laid in is a 2 page handwritten signed letter dated February 5, 1930 from Rackham to a Mr. Taylor reading: "Here are the remaining drawings for Mr. Scheuer. You will see there are 23 of them. This number is reached (instead of 16) because in several cases there was more than one drawing on the same sheet of paper and they are now separated. In two cases there were two drawings: and in one, six. The above is now my permanent home address to which all communication had better be addressed as I shall be there much more than at my London studio (where I can be, at any time, by appointment). I wish I had been able to get these drawings to you before this and I very much hope Mr. Scheuer has not been inconvenienced. I need hardly say it has not been possible to do otherwise but I am now back at work again and completely recovered from my operation." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

An enormous official, period map of the American zone of occupation in Germany following the end of the First World War, used by a member of Pershing's staff

Various, 1918-1919. 73" x 48". "Printed map, consisting of nine sheets, with copious ink and watercolor annotations, 73"" x 48"", [December, 1918]. An untitled map depicting northern France, southern Belgium, Luxembourg and the central Rhineland. Usual folds with a few minor partial separations as well as a few minor tears and losses at intersections, some marginal tears and creases, light toning and soiling, several spots reinforced on verso with paper, else very good. This dramatic map shows the phased Allied advance into the Rhineland following the armistice of November 11, 1918 depicting the limits of each days advance into Germany by American, British, Belgian and French forces as well as the ultimate boundaries of occupation, including some last-minute revisions made between the American and French zones of occupation. The map chronicles the Allied advance into Germany that began on November 18 and reached the Rhine on December 11. The American and French bridgehead zones, which helped guarantee Allied control of this strategic river are shown in large semicircles outlined in yellow. During the occupation of the Rhineland, United States forces consisted of 240,000 men in 9 divisions and remained in Germany until January 1923. French forces remained in the Rhineland until 1930 (and did not relinquish the Saar region until a plebiscite in 1935). The present map was part of a collection kept by General Robert C. Richardson (1882-1954). By the time the United States entered the First World War, Richardson, a captain, assisted in the rapid buildup of training of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.) bound for France. Fluent in French, Richardson served as an aide and observer with foreign armies before being assigned to the Operations Division, General Staff, A.E.F. as a liaison officer in June 1918. In that capacity he was involved in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. Following the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Richardson served on the Reparations Board of the Peace Commission in Paris and then as part of U.S. Army occupation forces in Germany stationed at Coblenz and later at Mainz. Richardson, a career Army officer was a member of the West Point Class of 1904, serving in the Philippines and as an instructor of modern languages at the United States Military Academy. During the Second World War, Richardson served as Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, and was instrumental in training American troops in the fundamentals of jungle warfare and amphibious assaults.
