MY ANTONIA

1918. [a fine copy] With Illustrations by W. T. Benda. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1918. Original brown cloth lettered in orange. First Edition, first state (with the illustrations on coated paper, rather than on text paper). This was Cather's second great novel of immigrant life on the Nebraska frontier, following O PIONEERS! of 1913. It tells of a Bohemian immigrant girl's life there, and of the pioneer strength that carries her through numerous adversities. Cather took a major role in the production of this book, choosing the illustrator and negotiating with Houghton Mifflin regarding many aspects of the book (especially the advertising budget, which HMC would not increase above $300.00!). She was particularly upset when she learned that HMC had ordered the illustrations printed on coated plate paper; she insisted that they be on regular text paper (though individually inserted), so some of the 3,000 copies of the first printing are in that later state.~This is a fine copy, with only the merest hints of usage -- virtually flawless, unusually free of wear or soil, and with no bookplates or signatures. Since this was a modestly-produced wartime book, we seldom see copies approaching this condition anymore. Crane A9a.1.

Speeches and Writings […] authorized up-to-date and comprehensive collection. First edition:

G.A. Natesan &amp: Co., Madras , [1918]. 8vo. pp. xvi, 296, [viii] adverts + pp. [xvi] b/w illustrations; original green paper wrappers, worn. Internal evidence derived from the text and the publisher's advertisements reveals that this collection was published at the very end of 1917 or early in 1918. Natesan, an Indian nationalist publisher who had sent funds to Gandhi in South Africa and who hosted Gandhi and his wife when they stayed in Madras in 1915, claims in his preface that "this is the first attempt to bring under one cover an authorized, exhaustive and up-to-date collection of the speeches and writings of M.K. Gandhi". He adds: "the publishers desire to take this opportunity to convey their thanks to Mr Gandhi for the permission accorded to them to bring out this edition of his speeches and writings and for furnishing them with copies of several of his hitherto unpublished speeches as also with English translations of some of his writings and addresses in Guzarati". Natesan reinforces this sense of Gandhi's personal involvement with by reproducing a photograph of the author and his wife with the publisher taken in Madras in 1915. It is a scarce and ephemeral title, with no copies recorded at auction and with only one recorded institutional example of this edition, held by the British Library. Another edition, tentatively dated 1917 by the British Library cataloguer, was published in Madras by Ganesh & Co. It appears to be a well-intentioned pirate edition, published without Gandhi?'s direct involvement. Establishing primacy is difficult - both books contain works dating to November 1917. It might be possible to read into Natesan?'s emphasis on printing an up-to-date authorised edition a certain annoyance that another publisher had pipped him to the post with (what he considered to be) an inferior collection, but that remains pure conjecture. Archive of letters and documents between Austrian President Kurt Waldheim and noted collector Jerry Granat regarding Waldheim's activities during WWII

Austrian politician (born 1918) who was Secretary General of the United Nations from 1972 to 1981 and President of Austria from 1986 to 1992. His activities during World War II stirred up a storm of controversy in the mid-1980s when gaps in his biography led many to believe that Waldheim was a former Nazi who participated in war crimes during World War II. Though a head of state, he remained a de facto outcast throughout much of the world during his presidency, and though he was essentially exonerated?"it was determined that he knew of certain crimes but was not an active participant?"the true nature of his involvement with the Nazis remains unresolved. Archive of documents related to the controversy surrounding Waldheim's wartime activities, circa 1975?"1986. Included: TLS signed "Kurt," one page, May 9, 1975, to collector Gerard Granat, explaining his activities in 1938. In part: "I did not participate at Dr. Schuschnigg's historical meeting with Hitler, but was politically active for the Socialist movement in the underground." TLS signed "Kurt Waldheim," one page, May 7, 1986, to Granat, apologizing for a delay in responding and mentioning that his son will give Granat the information he seeks. Matte-finish 4 x 5.75 photo, signed in ballpoint in the blank lower margin, "Kurt." Detailed ALS from Waldheim's son, Gerhard, three pages on two sheets, May 15, 1986, outlining evidence refuting the accusations against his father. In part: "The continued charges, clearly it is implicated [sic] that he carries at least co-responsibility as a desk lieutenant writing enemy reports ... . [It] is either a conscious effort to prove guilt by misconstruing facts or the sad result of someone who has never served in the military... ." Unsigned carbon copies of several letters from Granat to Waldheim and his son, expressing doubts about Waldheim's innocence and requesting information. Several unsigned copied pages of documents related to the case and Waldheim's activities. In fine condition overall, with scattered bends and light handling wear. From the Jerry Granat collection.

He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Les Jockeys Camoufles

1918. MATISSE, Henri. Les Jockeys Camouflés. By Pierre Reverdy. Illustrated with reproductions of 5 drawings by Matisse. 4to., bound in original printed wrappers, preserved in a recent half-morocco box. Paris: The Author, 1918.An inscribed copy of the second version of Matisse's first illustrated book. In the first version each of the poems was printed in coloured ink: green, orange, and blue, respectively. Reverdy was outraged by the final product; not only did he dislike the coloured typography, but he was annoyed that both he and the artist were referred to as "Monsieur..." on the title page - a formalism he found ridiculous. Reverdy immediately had this version prepared in black, "la seule édition approuvée par les auteurs." One of only 100 copies on Simili-Japon (there were 5 on Japon Imperial), the colophon initialed by Reverdy. The name of the recipient has been neatly excised. A rare and important book. NY, Macmillan, 1918, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover. Both the exceedingly rare dust jacket and the frontispiece are adorned with a photo of London by Arnold Genthe, the book is comprised of the title story, plus The Hussy, Like Argus of the Ancient Times, and The Princess, one of 5,342 copies, notoriously fragile since this is his only book bound in paper-covered boards instead of cloth. The extremely fragile jacket has well-protected the book, very good in a good jacket with moderate chipping along both front and rear jacket folds.

        A Royal Prisoner

New York: Brentano's, 1918 New York: Brentano's, 1918. First American Edition. 12mo, 277 pp. Maroon cloth, lettered in gilt. Part of the Fantômas Detective Novels series, French pulp fiction in which, in early 20th century France, a series of audacious crimes are committed by an unknown criminal called Fantomas, who seems to be able to change shape and place supernaturally, speaks in cliches, and is the object of more than a little erotic interest to women - in particular Lady Beltham, who is magnetically attracted to him, yet aghast at his crimes, throughout the series. Inspector Juve (who may be Fantomas' brother) searches for him obsessively. Souvestre & Allain's Fantomas series included no less than 32 collaborative, all originally written in French between 1911 and 1913, then a subsequent eleven volumes written by Allain alone after Souvestre's death in 1914. Dominated by this essence of an archetypal villain rather in opposition to the archteypal super-detective Sherlock Holmes, the mystique of the series was immensely popular among contemporary French surrealists. A Royal Prisoner [original French title: Un Roi Prisonnier de Fantômas] is one of the scarcest titles in the Brentano's first American editions. Einband etwas berieben, Titel fehlt (ansonst vollständig), etwas fingerfleckig, ansonst guter Zustand.

1918. MATISSE, Henri. Les Jockeys Camouflés. By Pierre Reverdy. Illustrated with reproductions of 5 drawings by Matisse. 4to., bound in original printed wrappers, preserved in a recent half-morocco box. Paris: The Author, 1918. |~||~||~||~||~| An inscribed copy of the second version of Matisse's first illustrated book. Claude Duthuit, Henri Matisse, Ouvrages Illustres No. 41. The Artist and the Book 195 (the first version). Skira 255.
