        Villa Bortolazzi all’Acquaviva di Trento.

Buono.

        THE SON OF TARZAN ...

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co.,. 1918. original green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold.. A square, bright, clean, very good white paper copy in good four-. color pictorial dust jacket correctly priced $1.30 on the spine panel. (with wraparound illustration by J. Allen St. John) with wear and. chipping, mostly shallow, along top and bottom edges, mainly spine. ends and corner tips, some rubbing along spine and flap folds, and. abrasions to rear panel, the largest measuring 12x80 mm. Despite the. rather large combined print run, this is among the most difficult of. the McClurg editions to obtain in jacket. A decent example of a rare. jacket never touched by a paper conservationist. (#151473). First edition, later (probable fourth) printing with W. F. Hall imprint on verso of title leaf, dedication leaf present, and title page dated 1918, not 1917. By late June 1917, THE SON OF TARZAN, published in March 1917, had been reprinted twice. There were two printings of the McClurg edition with the title page dated 1918; this one with the Hall imprint probably preceded copies without the Hall imprint on the copyright page. The fourth book of the Tarzan series. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 318. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 117. Bleiler (1978), p. 35. Reginald 02311. Heins ST-3.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1918 - Original Hardback Wisden. Very Good Condition. 9/10

1918. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1918 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. This is a fabulous book, the only downside and this is being very picky is a bookplate has been removed from the front left page. You probably wouldn't notice but I have to point it out. The front board is superb, hardly a mark and bright gilt, the spine cloth is excellent with bright gilt, it really is a top book. Super rear board too. Excellent, original hinges, and very clean inside just an ex owners name to the front right pastedown. If being picky there is a slight bobbling to front board cloth and inside a sort of corrigated iron appearance for a couple of pages. A wisden to own and brag about. Average 1918s are appearing on line at 5k , no need to pay that much.

Collection of Photographs and Ephemera Relating to a Soldiers and Sailors Carnival and Field Day.

Los Angeles, 1918. - 15 loose black leaves with b/w photographs (mostly 8" x 10") and ephemera (letters, small advertising posters, telegrams, ticket stubs) adhered to rectos and versos; 20 photographs in all. Leaves quite brittle and chipped at the edges; some photographs a little wavy (from the adhesive) or creased, but for the most part clean, and always intelligible; large tear across one of the posters, fragile, but with no loss. Centered around a Carnival and Field Day, this collection features photographs of, or correspondence from, some famous characters: Tom Mix (an actor in early Western movies, who performed at the event), F. W. Blanchard (an early Los Angeles developer, first president of the Hollywood Bowl, and director of the event), Miss Hessie Hallett and her horse Arabjay (performers), James D. Phelan (politician, civic leader, and banker, who contributed personnel to the event), Kaiser Wilhelm II (photographed in the form of an effigy hung at the event), and William Taft (who, via telegram, regrets that he cannot attend). Offers a cursory glance at the event’s inner workings, with telegrams, special ticket stubs and lunch coupons for participants (offered by The Patriotic Mothers of Sons in Service), a copy of the program and list of organizers, and a typed financial statement. But the highlight – and focus – of the collection are the photographs of the beautiful horses that were featured in the rodeo events, races, and fancy mounts. A day-long extravaganza that included marching bands, military maneuvers, wrestling, boxing, tug-of-war, and more, this glimpse at a moment of grandstanding captures more than a singular event in California’s (and America’s) history, as whispers of the tumultuous time are discernable throughout.

A native of Minneapolis, Chamberlain joined the French Lafayette Flying Corps in June of 1917. He attended French school and was posted to Escadrille Spad 98. Slightly older than his squadron mates, he was often more reckless than the rest. During the German offensive in the spring of 1918, his squadron flew air superiority missions over the front lines and on 13 June, his group dove from 12,000 feet on some German aircraft. They had been lured into a trap and other German fighters attacked, Chamberlain was killed in his seat by an unlucky burst of machine gun fire from an enemy aircraft. Member of the P.B.F.A. Poems of Childhood by Algernon Charles Swinburne. With a Preface by Edmund Gosse. London: William Heinemann, [1918]. Edition Deluxe limited to 765 numbered copies signed by Arthur Rackham (this copy being no. 98). Publisher's quarter vellum over parchment boards. Front cover and spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Pictorial endpapers. A bright and fine copy in the rare and fragile original glassine dust jacket. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase. The signed limited edition contains one extra colored plate that is not found in the trade edition - the frontispiece."[Rackham's] drawings for Swinburne's poems of childhood, The Springtide of Life attracted the admiration of Edmund Gosse, who expressed his appreciation in a preface and told Rackham personally (18th October 1918: 'This volume will not merely be he best book of the present art-season, but a joy to all sensitive people for years and years to come'" (Hudson, Arthur Rackham His Life and Work, p. 108)."As the close of his life approached, Swinburne frequently expressed his intention to extract from his various volumes those poems which were addressed to children, or were descriptive of child-life, and to publish them in a separate collection. He died without having found occasion to carry out this plan, and he left no directions with regard to the way in which it ought to be done One reason why Swinburne never brought out such a collection was his failure to find an artist who could interpret to his satisfaction the simplicity and freshness of his verses. We are fortunate in having secured, in Mr. Arthur Rackham, one whose delicate and romantic fancy is in sensitive harmony with Swinburne's, and who understands, no less than he did, how "Heaven lies about us in our infancy."         World War One Photograph Album - Navy Band Member aboard the U.S.S. Iowa and in France

Philadelphia, Norfolk, Atlantic Ocean, and France, 1918. Photograph Album. Very Good. 1917-1919. The album is approximately 11.5" x 7.5" and contains almost 120 photographs ranging in size from approximately 2" x 3" to 6.5" x 10". The photographs document the daily life of a Navy tuba player during World War I as a member of U.S.S. Iowa band and also during a deployment to France, probably during 1919. A few of the images are Real Photo Post Cards taken by one of the band members. The photographs are in nice shape; many are captioned on the front and some (probably most) are captioned on the reverse. (Several have loosened, and their captions are visible.) A band program and two printed poems by W. E. Wing about naval life in Tidewater are laid in. One of the poems has a manuscript explanation of the naval terms used in the verse. The Iowa, an old battleship that had be decommissioned in 1914, was brought out of mothballs and re-commissioned in 1917 when the U. S. entered war. She was initially berthed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and served as a receiving ship, but by November she had relocated to Norfolk, Virginia where she patrolled the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and also served as a training ship for the Atlantic Fleet. Photos include one of John Philip Sousa (he came out of retirement to serve in the Navy during war), formal shots of the band posed in front of the Iowa's main guns, many of the band in concert and on parade (both afloat and ashore), other U. S. and foreign vessels, life aboard ship (mess time, scrubbing decks), recreation (baseball and football games, swimming), a Navy band playing on board a troopship headed for France, a Navy band in France (visiting Reims, a destroyed tank, and American graves), and the Navy's NC-4 seaplane that was the first aircraft to successfully fly non-stop across the Atlantic in the spring of 1919. Overall, this is an attractive collection of photographs documenting WWI wartime service in the U.S. from a seldom scene perspective. No doubt, quite scarce.

[74 STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS RELATING TO WORLD WAR I] Of a total of 600, (see note). With a working Keystone Viewer (Meadeville PA.) in very good order.

Realistic Travels N.d. c.[1918]. . The definitive and first Realistic Travels set consisted of 600 cards, also issued in smaller editions of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500. At times in its production run smaller ?'subsets?' of 25 or 32 were also available. Realistic did not use image numbers, only sequence numbers. The Set of 600 sequence numbers are most usual (as above), other sets used differing numbering schemes, so the same images are sometimes found with different numbers. There were also minor sequence changes, and cards that were available were substituted for the intended cards, so some variation in numbers is usual. Please contact us for a full full listing.       New York: Alco-Gravure, Inc., 1918. First edition. Tiny tear to upper margin else fine (A).. Best known as an illustrator, Joseph Pennell [1857-1926] worked in a style of line drawing already familiar to many from the work of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, whose style captured the energy of light. The need for freedom, so valued by the artists of the day, is articulated here in support of the Liberty Loan bond drive," (Therese Thau Heyman, Posters American Style).         Autograph Letter Signed ("A. Einstein"), in German.

Berlin, March 20, 1918 - 4to. 1 page. On personal letterhead. To his colleague, the Nobel Prize Winner Fritz Haber, with additional annotation and signature in pencil at upper margin by Haber. Eeinstein asks for help fundraising for physics students. In 1914 Einstein returned to Berlin, and two years later was appointed president of the German Physical Society (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft). In this capacity, he writes to noted chemist Fritz Haber asking for help with a fundraising project. Haber would go on to win the 1918 Nobel Prize for Chemistry and is remembered today for his invention of synthetic fertilizer and as the "father of chemical warfare." In part (translated): "We have decided, in spite of these difficult times, to try to establish a fund to support Physics Laboratories . Scheel and I should take care of it. Everything has been prepared for a mailing but we are worried that our valiant effort may end up in the wastebaskets of the firms without having ever been read unless the request is delivered into the hands of the correct people. However, we do not know the right people to contact . We are embarrassed, but politely ask you to look through the enclosed list of leaders and to give us pointers as well as the addresses." Einstein adds in a post-script: "I beg you not to let this affair rest. If you have no time for this matter, please send the list back" and suggest another person who might be willing to help. Haber adds a note mentioning another chemist and signs at the upper margin of the page. Unusual to have the signatures of two Nobel Laureates on the same letter. - Light creasing and toning, three holes punched at left margin. WITH: Typed Letter Signed of Dr. J. Morganroth, 1 p, 4to, Berlin, February 21, 1919, forwarding the letter to Fraulein Bing. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Bovay, famille.

Please notify before visiting to see a book. Presents the results of Central Asiatic Expeditions to Mongolia and China conducted during the years 1921-1930 and led by Roy Chapman Andrews.
