[74 STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS RELATING TO WORLD WAR I] Of a total of 600, (see note). With a working Keystone Viewer (Meadeville PA.) in very good order.

Realistic Travels N.d. c.[1918]. . The definitive and first Realistic Travels set consisted of 600 cards, also issued in smaller editions of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500. At times in its production run smaller ?'subsets?' of 25 or 32 were also available. Realistic did not use image numbers, only sequence numbers. The Set of 600 sequence numbers are most usual (as above), other sets used differing numbering schemes, so the same images are sometimes found with different numbers. There were also minor sequence changes, and cards that were available were substituted for the intended cards, so some variation in numbers is usual. Please contact us for a full full listing.         [Poster]. That Liberty Shall Not Perish from the Earth. Buy Liberty Bonds. Fourth Liberty Loan

New York: Alco-Gravure, Inc., 1918. First edition. Tiny tear to upper margin else fine (A).. Best known as an illustrator, Joseph Pennell [1857-1926] worked in a style of line drawing already familiar to many from the work of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, whose style captured the energy of light. Pennell creates a landscape of liberty endangered-almost destroyed... The need for freedom, so valued by the artists of the day, is articulated here in support of the Liberty Loan bond drive," (Therese Thau Heyman, Posters American Style). There are a number of variants of this iconic poster with some variation in both size and color. Paret, Persuasive Images 103. Heyman, American Style 61. Rawls p. 227. Darracott 35. Theofiles 161.         Autograph Letter Signed ("A. Einstein"), in German.

Berlin, March 20, 1918 - 4to. 1 page. On personal letterhead. To his colleague, the Nobel Prize Winner Fritz Haber, with additional annotation and signature in pencil at upper margin by Haber. Eeinstein asks for help fundraising for physics students. In 1914 Einstein returned to Berlin, and two years later was appointed president of the German Physical Society (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft). In this capacity, he writes to noted chemist Fritz Haber asking for help with a fundraising project. Haber would go on to win the 1918 Nobel Prize for Chemistry and is remembered today for his invention of synthetic fertilizer and as the "father of chemical warfare." In part (translated): "We have decided, in spite of these difficult times, to try to establish a fund to support Physics Laboratories . Scheel and I should take care of it. Everything has been prepared for a mailing but we are worried that our valiant effort may end up in the wastebaskets of the firms without having ever been read unless the request is delivered into the hands of the correct people. However, we do not know the right people to contact . We are embarrassed, but politely ask you to look through the enclosed list of leaders and to give us pointers as well as the addresses." Einstein adds in a post-script: "I beg you not to let this affair rest. If you have no time for this matter, please send the list back" and suggest another person who might be willing to help. Haber adds a note mentioning another chemist and signs at the upper margin of the page. Unusual to have the signatures of two Nobel Laureates on the same letter. - Light creasing and toning, three holes punched at left margin. WITH: Typed Letter Signed of Dr. J. Morganroth, 1 p, 4to, Berlin, February 21, 1919, forwarding the letter to Fraulein Bing. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Bovay, famille.

Please notify before visiting to see a book. Presents the results of Central Asiatic Expeditions to Mongolia and China conducted during the years 1921-1930 and led by Roy Chapman Andrews. The publication of these volumes was subsidized by private funds; because these funds ran out, only 7of the 12 planned volumes were published. The authors, titles, publication dates are as follows: Volume 1: Andrews - The New Conquest of Central Asia (1932); Volume 2: Berkey - The Geology of Mongolia (1927); Volume 4: Grabau - The Permian of Mongolia (1931); Volume 9: Nichols - The Fresh-water Fishes of China (1943); Volume 10: Pope - The Reptiles of China (1935); Volume 11 (Parts 1 and 2 in 2 volumes): Allen - The Mammals of China and Mongolia (1938-1940); Central Asiatic Expeditions: Preliminary Reports, Volume 1: 1918-1925; Central Asiatic Expeditions: Preliminary Reports, Volume 2: 1926-1929. The two rarest volumes in this set are the Preliminary Reports; it is likely that only 200 copies were issued only for exchange with other libraries.         New Poems

London: Martin Secker,, 1918. Octavo. Original grey wrappers, lettered in dark blue on front cover. Housed in a dark blue cloth chemise and slipcase. Skilful old repair to spine. An exceptionally nice copy. First edition, first impression, "the first printing consisted of 500 copies" (Roberts & Poplawski). Siegfried Sassoon's copy, inscribed on the half-title, in the month of publication: "Siegfried Sassoon. Oct. 1918" and with his monogram book label pasted inside the front cover, which was added to all the books from Sassoon's library that were auctioned by Sotheby's in 1991. "On 13th July 1918, Sassoon was just returning from a patrol in No Man's Land when he was shot in the head by one of his own sergeants, who mistook him for an advancing German. The incident is recounted in Sherston's Progress" (Robert Giddings, The War Poets, 1988, p. 159). Sassoon's diary for early October 1918, show the after effects of this trauma in terse comments such as "awful headache" and "very exhausted", alongside his participation in London's busy social whirl. Two years after the appearance of New Poems Sassoon parodied Lawrence in "Fireflies. A Set of Parodies of the Works of Some Famous Modern Poets" (Vanity Fair, September 1920).

        Slezské Písne [Silesian songs]

Ekaterinburg: Vydáno Osvetlím odborem O.C.S.N.R. [Odbocka Ceskoslovenské Národní Rady v Rusku], 1918. Cloth. Very Good. 2mo (13.5 x 11.5 cm). 128 pp. This rather elaborately printed edition of Petr Bezruc?'s popular Czech poetic cycle, Silesian Songs, is a relic of the publishing operations of the Czechosloak Legions during their famed Anabasis during the early phases of the Russian Civil War. The Czech Legion were fighting on behalf of the Entente (the U.K., France, Russia) and specifically Tsar during the First World War in the cause of Czech independence from Austria, which was one of the opposing Central Powers. They had proved a puissant combat force, but the Bolshevik Revolution and the subsequent Soviet treaty with the Central Powers threw everything up in the air. Soon the Czech Legion was taking sides in the Civil War which ensued, with the Legion aligning itself with the Whites, or the Counter-Revolutionary forces. Initially the Legion scored great success against the disorganized, ill-trained Soviet fighters, and by 1919 the Legion had complete control of the Trans Siberian Railroad. Unfortunately for them, the Soviet army got its act together and swiftly reversed the tide by mid-1919, at which point members of the Legion became suddenly homesick and scrambled as best they could to escape from Soviet territory. Most eventually did get out, after long delays and anxieties, and members of the Legion formed the core of the Czech army formed after the country achieved independence with the Treaty of Versailles. In any case, this publication is evidence of the roots the Czech Legion very quickly was able to put down in the land they controlled in Russia, and it is perhaps also surprising at how high the production values are of this trifle. Tan cloth with embossed red title and ornament; original wrappers preserved; handwritten and illustrated text lithographically reproduced; 5-128 pp. Boards lightly soiled; text toned

        COUNTER-ATTACK AND OTHER POEMS.

London: William Heinemann, 1918. - Original red and orange wrappers, neatly and sympathetically rebacked in light tan paper with spine lettering, Usual slight tanning to text block, small chip from lower corner of rear wrapper, but a good copy. Folding cloth clamshell box with gilt lettered label. First edition (1500 copies printed) of the first public printing in book form of many of Sassoon's most significant war poems. Inscribed by Sassoon on the half-title: "To J.M. Barrie with admiration from Siegfried Sassoon May 1919." Additionally, Sassoon has made seven corrections in the text in pencil. The circumstances of the presentation can be fairly confidently nailed down: Sassoon had assisted in various ways with the preparation of the first number of THE OWL, the lavish literary periodical edited by his close friend Robert Graves. There was a deluxe issue of 24 copies to be signed by the contributors, and in SIEGFRIED'S JOURNEY (1945, pp.147-8), Sassoon relates how he took 24 copies of the newly minted May publication to Thomas Hardy for his signature. Hardy had contributed and was then staying with Sir James Barrie. It seems possible, if not probable, that Sassoon presented this gift to Barrie on that occasion, or, if not that day, immediately thereafter. KEYNES A17a. REILLY, p.285.

950 € (1 scans) Maison [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
