MUSIC - EARLY JAZZ RECORDING POSTER)
Victor Records. 1917. Poster in tones of brown, black and orange 33 x 21 inches (84x53cm) archivally backed with a one inch wide section down the right edge reattached (a small area of the lower right margin missing) and two short tears at the lower edge minimised. Scene of couples dancing in a ballroom, with orchestra playing. Tunes listed are Dixieland Jass Band, Livery Stable Blues, Poor Butterfly and Allah's Holiday. Bottom right are the initials 'RW'. A facsimile letter from the Victor Talking Machine Company to Victor Dealers reads in part: "The Jass Band is its own best advertisement to people who have heard it but for those who have not, we have had the enclosed poster prepared. Given the best possible display you have at your disposal, this new poster, featuring the first Jass Band selection and one other excellent dance record, will develop a very considerable volume of business for all our Dealers. The Jass Band is a novelty. It is the newest and the noisiest thing in the cabarets. Coming just at the end of the winter season it will carry the dancers merrily along into the summer months and like all musical novelties, it means the beginning of another special 'run' of business." Little did the Victor company know just how long that 'run' would last... We have found only one holding at Tulane University in the Hogan Jazz Archive.

[Click Below for Full Description]

André BRETON
A remarkable autobiographical poem by André Breton dedicated to Guillaume Apolinnaire, entitled "December", [] in black ink on laid paper, composed in 1915. Our manuscript was written between March 1917 and the beginning of 1918 .An essential poem of the pre-Dadaist contemporary of the author, it is part of a coherent set of seven manuscript poems by Breton (referred to as Coll.X. in André Breton's Complete Works , Volume I of La Library of the Pleiades, Gallimard, 1988, 1071). These poems, from his youthful writing, are carefully calligraphed in black ink on watermarked laid paper. This set was sent to his circle of friends and writers, including Valery, Apollinaire, Theodore Fraenkel, and his brother André Paris. It was later published in his first collection, Mont de Piété , which appeared in June 1919 at the publishing house Au sans Pareil, newly founded by his friend Rene Hilsum. The exact dating of this set of autograph poems is determined by the writing of the last poem of the collection ("André Derain"), composed March 24, 1917, which offers a terminus post quem absolute. In addition, an older version of the poem "Age", dedicated to Leon-Paul Fargue, appears in our collection under its original name "Poème". Dated by the author of February 19, 1916 - the day of his twenty years - and created 10 days earlier according to his correspondence, it was renamed and reworked only for its publication in July 1918 in The Three Roses . In all likelihood prior to the publication of this last poem, the seven autograph poems, were probably written during 1917 or early 1918, while … [Click Below for Full Description]

Please visit our store for more rare books from James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck etc. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the first novel of Irish writer James Joyce. A Künstlerroman in a modernist style, it traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and an allusion to Daedalus, the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe. The work uses techniques that Joyce developed more fully in Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). A Portrait began life in 1903 as Stephen Hero--a projected 63-chapter autobiographical novel in a realistic style. After 25 chapters, Joyce abandoned Stephen Hero in 1907 and set to reworking its themes and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Both Robert (1879-1949) and Sylvia (1888-1952) were central figures in contemporary Irish literary scene, as well as being committed Irish nationalists. The couple, who married on 21 April 1909, met at Gaelic League meetings in London, and were active in the Celtic revival movement championed by Yeats, who would often visit their Hampstead home. Lynd reviewed Yeats on a number of occasions, and wrote that in "The Fisherman" (which is included in this collection at p. 6) Yeats "has figured the pride of genius and the passion of defeated love in words that are beautiful in themselves, but trebly beautiful in their significances" (Jeffares, p. 223). Laid in is an autograph letter signed from Elizabeth Yeats to Sylvia Lynd, on Cuala Industries headed paper.

Mason, A(rthur) E(dward) W(oodley) / Author of 'The Four Feathers'
Hodder and Stoughton, London. This Queen's Quorum first printing States "Printed in 1917." List of 15 previous titles by this author opposite title page contains no titles after 1917. Jacket rear panel advertises a number of books first issued in 1917 (none later, so far as we can determine), including Baroness Orczy's "Lord Tony's Wife," A.A. Milne's "Once Upon a Time," Ernest Thompson Seton's "Preacher of Cedar Mountain," "No Man's Land" (by "Sapper,") etc. The firm name "Arbuckle, Waddell & Fawkner" (early 20th Century Australian printers & publishers) rubber-stamped in small print to blank FFE. (Possibly their file copy?) Mason's best-known novels are "The Four Feathers" (1902) and "Fire Over England" (1937), both of which were filmed successfully. In 1910, the author undertook to create a fictional detective as different as possible from Sherlock Holmes, who had recently been resuscitated by Doyle after his supposed death in 1903. Inspector Gabriel Hanaud was stout -- not gaunt like Holmes; a professional policeman -- not a gentleman amateur; from the French surete -- not Victorian England; and relied on psychological insights rather than physical evidence. Hanaud's "Watson" was retired London banker Julius Ricardo. Hanaud's debut in the 1910 novel "At The Villa Rose" marks "the first major fiction detective of the Twentieth Century," by some accounts. Hanaud makes his second appearance here, in the short story "The Affair at the Semiramis Hotel." This book, a Queen's Quorum title, also includes the notable mystery "The Brown Book." Book is "good plus" with spine slant … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moscow: Tip. tov-va I.D. Sytina, 1917. 16 pp. In original printed wrappers. Covers rubbed with small tears of the spine. Piece of a contemporary newspaper with new alphabet glued to the front cover. Owner's pencil markings in the text. First book on a new Russian orthography with rules of the spelling and grammar and a scientific explanation of the reform. Pavel Nikitich Sakulin (1868-1930) - Russian doctor of philology and literature, member of Academy of Sciences. He was one of initiators of the Russian orthography reform. The orthography committee was created by Academy of Sciences in 1904. Some of suggested changes were pretty radical. It is widely believed that Bolsheviks and their despotism were the reason of this reform. True that the decree of the reform was first published just two months after the October revolution but it was being prepared for many years by the best Russian linguists of the time. Nevertheless this reform became the symbol of change that Bolsheviks were bringing for the country. Russian organizations abroad (emigrants) disagreed with it and continued to follow pre-revolutionary rules. This brochure was issued as a guidance how to use new Russian orthography. Because it was widely used most of the copies didn't survive to this day. Extremely rare. No copies according to Worldcat.

[Petrograd: Tsentr. Tipograf, 1917]. One sided leaflet. 36,5x22 cm. Near fine. A unique survival of the time and a historical evidence of the most important time in Russia's history. This is a flyer printed by the All-Russian League of Equal Rights for Women in 1917 for their political campaign for the election to the Constituent Assembly in November of 1917. The translation of the text on the flyer: ''[Female] Citizens and [male] citizens! The League of Equality for Women, wishing that the right of women to participate in the Constituent Assembly was not only on paper, expose its candidates to the Constituent Assembly. Vote for the list number 7. If you want our children not to grow up without a home and the old people to not die on the street - send women to the Constituent Assembly. In America, Australia and other countries where women take part in the drafting of laws the number of schools is multiplied, prisons are empty, debauchery and drunkenness noticeably diminish, the protection of children and the elderly is fully secured by law. Let's send women to the Constituent Assembly too. The old Russia was built only by men, and the grief and misfortunes of the motherland were always shared with them by mothers, wives and daughters. A new Russia should be built by women and men together! The most important Russian laws will be written in the Constituent Assembly. From the laws that will be created in the Constituent Assembly, the fate and life of many generations depends not only on men, but also on women, and so send women to the Constituent Assembly...''
