Apart from the described wrappers and extra-wrappers, there are, in all, 24 leaves with -mostly photographic- illustrations and 6 leaves of text.The extra dust-wrappers (which are not called for but which do exist in different vaieties, very rarely present) are quite worn and chipped at edges. The spine is held together by a string, and some of the first extra leaves are a bit loose (but fully intact). Apart from the quite worn extra material, the publication is in very nice condition. The programme-issue itself has very little wear.. Scarce original printing of this seminal avantgarde-publication, the May 1917 Théatre du Chatelet- publication that presents Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris - here containing the entire separate publication mainly devoted to Jean Cocteau's groundbreaking ballet Parade - being one of the most important publications in the history of modern art. It is here, in his presentation-article to Parade that Apollinaire coins the term surrealism and thus lays the foundation for the seminal cultural movement that Bréton came to lead. Furthermore, the ballet Parade represents a historical collaboration between several of the leading artistic minds of the early twentieth century: Erik Satie, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Léonide Massine, and Serge Diaghilev, and is famous, not only for its contents and its music, but also for its magnificent costumes designed by Picasso, the drawings of which are presented in the present publication for the first time - most famously the front cover for the Parade-programme, which depicts the Costume de Chinois du ballet PARADE/ Aquarelle de Picasso, an etching with original, stunning pochoir-colouring. It is the 1917 ballet Parade - the first of the modern ballets - originally presented for the first time in the present publication, that marks Picasso's entry into the public and bourgeois institutions of ballet and theatre and presents Cubism on the stage for the first time. The present publication constitutes an outright revolution in the history of art, theatre, and ballet.Several variants of this spectacular publication exist, but the one we have here is as original and complete as it comes, containing the entire contents of the different variants. We not only have the extremely scarce and fragile dust-wrapper and the equally scarce illustrated coloured double-wrappers (front: Peinture de Picasso; back: Décor de Larionow pour le ballet BABA IAGA''), but also the entire 1917 Théatre du Chatelet-programme (in original illustrated wrappers) with the entire separate parade-issue -also entitled Programme des Ballets Russes- (also in original illustrated wrappers), with more than 20 leaves of photographic illustrations containing pictures of the actors and actresses, also in their spectacular avant-garde-costumes, Bakst's portrait of Leonide Massine, Picasso's portrait of Stavinski, Bakst's portrait of Picasso, Picasso and Massine in the ruins of Pompei, Picasso's drawings of a scene from Parade and of Massine, as well as several (mostly humorous) advertisements. But more importantly, we have, apart from the above-mentioned famous Chinaman by Picasso, in original pochoir-colouring, the other famous etching by Picasso Costume d'acrobate du ballet Parade/ Aquarelle de Picasso, also in original pochoir-colouring (bright blue), the seminal presentation-article by Apollinaire, which coins the term surrealism (see bottom of description for full translation of this groundbreaking preface), the two Les Femmes de Bonne Humeur-figures by Bakst, Constanza and Battista, printed and heightened in gold (pochoir), the printed costume by Larionow, Les contes russes, which is with original bright red and blue pochoir-colouring, and the Le Mendiant-costume by Bakst for Parade, and, of course, the texts by Bakst (on choreography and décor), Georges-Michel (Ballets Russes after the War), as well as the texts for the various ballets (listing the actors and their rôles as well as a resume of the plot). Tact in audacity consists in knowing how far we may go too far. Jean Cocteau, poet, writer, and arts advocate, made this statement in his 1918 manifesto, The Cock and Harlequin. Cocteau, in collaboration with Erik Satie and Pablo Picasso, discovered how far to go too far in the circus-like ballet Parade-one of the most revolutionary works of the twentieth century. Parade incorporates elements of popular entertainment and uses extra-musical sounds, such as the typewriter, lottery wheel, and pistol, combining them with the art of ballet. Cocteau wrote the scenario for the one-act ballet and contracted the other artists. Satie wrote the score to the ballet, first in a piano four-hands version and then in full orchestration, while Picasso designed the curtain, set, and costumes. Later, Léonide Massine, a dancer with the Ballet Russes, was brought in as the choreographer. Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russes premiered the ballet Parade on May 18, 1917. The program notes for the ballet were written by the poet Apollinaire. They became a manifesto of l'esprit nouveau or the new spirit which was taking hold in Paris during the early twentieth-century. Apollinaire described the ballet Parade as surrealistic, and in doing so created a term which would develop into an important artistic school. (Tracy A. Doyle, Erik Satie's ballet PARADE, p. 1).When the French poet and army officer Guillaume Apollinaire wrote the program notes For Parade, he created the manifesto of the l'esprit nouveau - the new spirit. Cocteau had called the ballet realistic, but Apollinaire took it an important step further and described it as surrealistic, thus coining a term that would soon develop into an important artistic movement. With Picasso, Apollinaire had established the aesthetic principals of Cubism and was considered a leader in the European avant-garde. ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF APOLLINAIRE'S PROGRAMME NOTES TO PARADE: Definitions of Parade are blossoming everywhere, like the lilac bushes of this tardy spring...It is a scenic poem transposed by the innovative musician Erik Satie into astonishingly expressive music, so clear and simple that it seems to reflect the marvelously lucid spirit of France. The cubist painter Picasso and the most daring of today's choreographers, Léonide Massine, have here consummately achieved, for the first time, that alliance between painting and dance, between the plastic and mimetic arts, that is a herald of the more comprehensive art to come. There is nothing paradoxical about this. The Ancients, in whose lives music played such an important role, were totally unaware of harmony, which constitutes the very basis of modern music. This new alliance - I say new, because until now scenery and costumes were linked only by factitious bonds - has given rise, in Parade, to a kind of surrealism, which I consider to be the point of departure for a whole series of Manifestations of the New Spirit that is making itself felt today and that will certainly appeal to our best minds. We may expect it to bring about profound changes in our arts and manners through universal joyfulness, for it is only natural, after all, that they keep pace with scientific and industrial progress. Having broken with the choreographic tradition cherished by those who used to be known, in Russia, under the strange name 'balletomanes', Massine has been careful not to yield to the temptation of pantomime. He has produced something totally new-a marvelously appealing kind of dance, so true, so lyrical, so human, and so joyful that it would even be capable (if it were worth the trouble) of illuminating the terrible black sun of Dürer's Melancholy. Jean Cocteau has called this a realistic ballet. Picasso's cubist costumes and scenery bear witness to the realism of his art. This realism - or this cubism, if you will - is the influence that has most stirred the arts over the past ten years. The costumes and scenery in Parade show clearly that its chief aim has been to draw the greatest possible amount of aesthetic emotion from objects. Attempts have often been made to return painting to its barest elements. In most of the Dutch painters, in Chardin, in the impressionists, one finds hardly anything but painting. Picasso goes further than any of them. This is clearly evident in Parade, a work in which one's initial astonishment is soon replaced by admiration. Here the aim is, above all, to express reality. However, the motif is not reproduced but represented-more precisely, it is not represented but rather suggested by means of an analytic synthesis that embraces all the visible elements of an object and, if possible, something else as well: an integral schematization that aims to reconcile contradictions by deliberately renouncing any attempt to render the immediate appearance of an object. Massine has Adapted himself astonishingly well to the discipline of Picasso's art. He has identified himself with it, and his art has become enriched with delightful inventions, such as the realistic steps of the horse in Parade, Formed by two dancers, one of whom does the steps of the forelegs and the other those of the hind legs. The fantastic constructions representing the gigantic and surprising features of The Managers, far from presenting an obstacle to Massine's imagination, have, one might say, served to give it a liberating impetus. All in all, Parade will change the ideas of a great many spectators. They will be surprised, that is certain; but in a most agreeable way, and charmed as well; Parade will reveal to them all the gracefulness of the Modern movements, a gracefulness they never suspected. A magnificent vaudeville Chinaman will make their imaginations soar; the American Girl cranking up her imaginary car will express the magic of their daily lives, whose wordless rites are celebrated with exquisite and astonishing agility by the acrobatin blue and white tights

Album of glossy gelatin silver print photographs of Australian and New Zealand troops at the Third Battle of Ypres [Passchendaele] during World War I. The album holds 96 original photographs each measuring 7.5" x 6" tipped on to the album sheets, two to a page, with brief captions. Neatly rebacked at some point, some modest spotting on the boards, a very good album; the images display some very faint toning in the corners from the glue that holds them in the album, but are mostly fine or near fine. A few of the photographs with a slug "Australian Official Photograph" in the negative. A superb and arresting historical album of photographs of the Australian and New Zealand troops at the Third Battle of Ypres [Passchendaele] during World War I. Frank Hurley was the noted photographer of the Antarctic exploring expeditions of Shackleton and Mawson; his photographs of those journeys serve as the visual backdrop and imprimatur of those famous expeditions. Upon Hurley's return from the second Mawson expedition, he was commissioned, and became the official war photographer for the Australian government. He spent the final year of the war in France with ANZAC troops, where he took these images in the area of Ypres salient, where nearly a quarter of a million lives were lost.The images include derelict and damaged British and German tanks; several images of aerial activity taken both on the ground and in combat, as well as one of soldiers filling an observation balloon on the ground, and another aerial image of Ypres from a balloon; German pillboxes; many images of artillery including captured field pieces and large train-mounted guns, both damaged and operational; gunners in gas masks firing artillery and another of a captured German gun with its captors (including a puppy happily framed in the barrel); long rows of wounded on stretchers and several images of field hospitals; soldiers sleeping in trenches or cellars or other makeshift shelters; and one image captioned "Gen. Sir John Monash, K.C.B. receiving the Accolade of France" shows Monash on one knee receiving a medal. Also pictured is an ANZAC transport ship, a field kitchen, troops being reviewed, serving out rations, a couple images of impromptu dental surgery, an Australian band parading in Baupaume, a line of London buses used as transports, several images of temporary bridges, one image of what appears to be a gas cloud, one interesting image of men under guard labeled: "Prisoners who rescued Australian Wounded," and images of the corpses of horses and men "left to rot by the Germans."The album offered here is comparable to a digitized example in the State Library of New South Wales. A fair number of the photographs present in the digitized album are also available in our present offering, or illustrate the same scene from a different perspective or angle, or are variants of those images. The album is very good with worn edges with some photos lacking, near fine or better.A photo album kept by Bernard Peace between 1917 and 1918 in the Middle East and India. Peace was in the Middle Eastern theatre of war at the end of World War I and documented the capture of Baghdad as well as the armistice with Turkey, and civilian life during the last year of war. The album opens with photos pieced together to create a panoramic view of the armistice with Turkey which took place November 2, 1918. One photo shows the dedication of a British cemetery in Baghdad with rows of tiny crosses and troops standing at attention while three clergymen pray over the dead. There are aerial photos of the encampment at Baqubah and other cities and camps listed as "Mesopotamia" and one captioned, "hit on the Euphrates from the air." Two photos of an airplane are captioned, "first aeroplane from England to India, (Handley-Page) arriving at Baghdad. Gen. Salmond, pilot." Another page shows a camel caravan and a photo labeled "British armored car."       1917. Hi, Here we have a rare 1917 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to both the front and the spine. The boards are excellent, very clean and crisp, hard to fault, if being picky a small line to the rear. Inside the hinges are very good, very tightly bound. Amazingly clean inside apart from one exowners stamp(?) to page 2 , other than that it'd be on my bookcase. Very good, clean yellow pastedowns. Minimal foxing. A lovely book. Rare, No restoration.

      London: Fine Art Society, 1917. Poster. Lithograph printed in 1917, mounted on linen. Image measures 30 x 20". In this advertisement for an exhibition of his work, the Dutch artist Louis Raemaekers warns against the terrorizing power of the growing Prussian state. The true German spirit is symbolized by the female figure of Germania, who cowers in the corner of a dark alley. Her oppressor is a Death figure who stands above her, dressed as a robber and brandishing a knife. His hollowed skull looks out at the viewer below a cap labeled "Militarism," referring to the brutal policies of the Prussian regime. The image is framed in black above the text "Exhibition now at 148 New Bond St." Dating to 1917, this exhibition came at the height of Raemaeker's renown as "The War's Greatest Cartoonist." The top left corner of the poster contains the text "Alone at last." and the lower left the name of the artist. The poster is in very good condition and mounted on linen.Louis Raemaekers (1869--1956) was an important Dutch cartoonist during World War I, working from the perspective of neutral Holland in support of the Allies. His cartoons were first published in the newspaper "Telegraaf" and found him support especially in England, to which he emigrated. His propaganda drawings were widely celebrated by the Allies, and Raemaekers continued to produce images for charity and other causes after the war, as well as anti-German cartoons in World War II. This poster conveys the power of Raemaeker's art for which he was well known.

Originally published in Pearson's in 1917, this anthology of Key's best ghostly tales relates the adventures of Dr. Arnold Rhymer, occult detective in his supernatural adventures in the service of Scotland Yard. Slightly crude in their political standpoint regarding Germany (Key had a son serving on the Western Front), they are slightly dated, but entertaining and a valuable contribution to the genre. Scarce.

An unusually nice, near fine copy, in the uncommon printed dust jacket which is very slightly chipped around the crown of the spine. First edition, being one of 740 copies for distribution in the UK from a total printing of 1000 copies. Sassoon's second formal trade collection, including, of course, many of his key war poems appearing in book form for the first time. This is a good association copy, inscribed by Sassoon on the free endsheet: "For 'Burton' with all good wishes from Siegfried Sassoon May 1917." The recipient was Nellie Burton, Robert Ross' landlady, and close friend of Sassoon, Graves, et al. Formal publication took place on 3 May. The tipped-in errata is present, but does not bear Sassoon's manuscript corrections to those errata as was his occasional practice in presentation copies of this book. KEYNES A15a.       London: The Little Review., 1917. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo. Original cream cloth-backed white paper-covered card folder. 44pp stapled and then bound into folder with single cord. Folder illustrated with a Vorticist design by Lewis. Heavily marked, stained and darkened, edges rubbed, slight area of loss to paper cover to top edge of upper cover, a series of tiny prickmarks to upper cover, staples rusted. One of 200 copies (though Pound & Grover speculate that perhaps only fifty copies of the folder were made). With an ink presentation inscription from Lewis 'To dear Alic(k) Schepeler from P.Wyndham Lewis 1/12/17'. Alick Schepler, lover and friend of Lewis and other writers and artists notably W.B.Yeats, worked for the Illustrated London News. Addressed in letters by Lewis variously as 'Alic...' 'Alick' and 'Alec'. from 1914-1917. Alick Schepeler who worked as a secretary on the Illustrated London News , was interested in the arts and had been the model and mistress of Augustus John in 1906-7, she had been born in Russia in the same year as Lewis and grew up in Poland where her mother became a governess after the death of her father. The moody and highly-strung girl. who was obsessed by clothing, had luxurious brown hair, deep blue eyes and a rich slightly accented voice. She was unpretentious, passionate and (unlike most of her contemporaries) eager for love affairs. John who was fascinated by Alick for a time and did some very successful portraits of her, called her his "jeune fille mystérieuse et gaie". In mid 1915 Lewis wrote apologetically to Alick; "I cannot describe my resentment against a woman who made me drunk last Saturday afternoon....I was maudlin and very insolent." And in June he wrote a tantalizing letter, describing his fascination with her nightgown, and his temporary escape, which suggests she was also his mistress: "You caused me this morning to almost alter all my arrangements: for the pink nightgown on sunday (though I don't believe you've got one) captured my my sense, over-susceptible as you know. But I kept my head, and the result is that I regret to say that I shall be away on Sunday next. I am going to the country again....& could not, save by extreme dislocation of arrangements, get back in time for the pink nightdress. Prehaps when you can once more move, and our no longer wrapt round with the odour of disinfectants [She had been ill], I may yet hope tpo have a glimpse of the garment?". Lew wrote to Alick while he was at the front in 1917: and he continued to see her until 1930 when he apparently suspected her loyalty and quarrelled about malicious gossip that had been attributed to her.       NP, NP 1917 - Realized in the fashion of a real photographic studio portrait, this striking hand-colored lithograph depicts an American serviceman in uniform posing with a sign that says: "I'll Get the Kaiser's Goat." The lithograph was made shortly after April 6, 1917 when the U.S. Senate voted 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorsed the declaration by a vote of 373 to 50, thus formally allowing America to enter World War I. This original glass-protected work rests in a splendid period oval-shaped gold wood frame decorated with embossed American flags and armorial on top and two entangled fleur-de-lys at bottom. Die Familie von Mülinen sind ein Aargauer Rittergeschlecht aus Mülligen AG. später habsburgische Ministerialen in der Schweiz. Seit dem 15. Jahrhundert zählen die Mülinen zum bernischen Patriziat. Einige Familienmitglieder führten den hochadeligen Titel eines Reichsgrafen von Mülinen. Das Geschlecht ist 2008 im Mannsstamm ausgestorben. Der früheste bekannte Namensträger ist Peter von Mülinen (+ 1287). Schultheiss von Brugg. Sein Sohn Berchtold (+ 1344) erwarb 1301 oder 1311 die Herrschaften Kasteln und Ruchenstein. Henmann (+ 1421) wurde 1407 Burger von Bern und ab 1414 Herr zu Schinznach. Hans Friedrich (+ 1491) erwarb durch seine Heirat mit Barbara von Scharnachthal die Herrschaft Brandis und begründete damit den Berner Zweig. Unter den Großen der Familie sind zu nennen neben Caspar von Mülinen. der Historiker Nikolaus Graf von Mülinen (1760-1833). der auch als Befreier Nidwaldens bekannt ist und 1811 die Schweizer Geschichtsforschende Gesellschaft mitbegründete; weiters Nikolaus` Vetter. der Diplomat Bernhard Graf von Mülinen (1788-1851).       Paris, 1917. Small areas of paper loss in upper and lower margins from hanging, else very good. French broadside printing of President Wilson's address to Congress asking for a declaration of war against Germany. After years of insisting on neutrality, the sinking of the Lusitania and the infamous Zimmermann Note scandal persuaded Wilson that the time for action was at hand. On April 2, 1917, before a special joint session of Congress, Wilson asked for a declaration of war against Germany, and America entered World War I. Wilson's speech, known as "The world must be made safe for democracy" speech, would be a defining moment of his presidency, and America entering the war would, in turn, be the beginning of the end of the World War I. In the speech, printed here in French on a large sheet and no doubt hung in the streets of Paris, Wilson began with a harsh condemnation of German unrestricted submarine warfare and a review of the reasons neutrality was no longer possible. He then continued: "With a profound sense of the solemn and even tragical character of the step I am taking and of the grave responsibilities which it involves, but in unhesitating obedience to what I deem my constitutional duty, I advise that the Congress declare the recent course of the Imperial German government to be in fact nothing less than war against the government and people of the United States; that it formally accept the status of belligerent which has thus been thrust upon it; and that it take immediate steps, not only to put the country in a more thorough state of defense but also to exert all its power and employ all its resources to bring the government of the German Empire to terms and end the war.... "The world must be made safe for democracy. Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty. We have no selfish ends to serve. We desire no conquest, no dominion. We seek no indemnities for ourselves, no material compensation for the sacrifices we shall freely make. We are but one of the champions of the rights of mankind. We shall be satisfied when those rights have been made as secure as the faith and the freedom of nations can make them.... "It is a distressing and oppressive duty, gentlemen of the Congress, which I have performed in thus addressing you. There are, it may be, many months of fiery trial and sacrifice ahead of us. It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible and disastrous of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. But the right is more precious than peace, and we shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own governments, for the rights and liberties of small nations, for a universal dominion of right by such a concert of free peoples as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free. To such a task we can dedicate our lives and our fortunes, everything that we are and everything that we have, with the pride of those who know that the day has come when America is privileged to spend her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and happiness and the peace which she has treasured. A very good copy." it was during these years that he illustrated a new Brothers Grimm title, Little Brother and Little Sister which is in effect one of his crowning achievements. In these twelve colour plates we find the most astonishing versatility of style, and an exquisite pitch of execution. The style ranges from the delicate to the virtual burlesque caricature. On the one hand is an example of pre-Raphaelite, infinitely tender portrayals of womanhood, such as 'The True Sweetheart', or the delicate realism of Maid Maleen and her waiting woman escaping from the terrible tower of her father. Yet within the same book we find the classic Rackhamerie of the gnome with his beard caught in the cleft of the semi-anthropomorphized tree, appealing to Rose-red and Snow-white for help and the Hassell-like custard-pie of the three soldiers and the long nose. This is one of the few books illustrated by Rackham from which it would be possible to select any single-colour picture in order to demonstrate Rackham's art at its finest." (Gettings. A classic of horror fiction from Robbins, about a trio of circus freaks who escape captivity in the circus, open a curiosity shop, and use it as a base from which to launch a devastating crime wave. Basis for two films, the first a silent classic in 1925 directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney (as Professor Echo the ventriloquist), Victor McLaglen (as Hercules the strongman), and Harry Earles (as Tweedledee the dwarf); the second version was directed by Jack Conway in 1930 as a talkie, with Chaney and Earles reprising their roles, and Ivan Linow as Hercules. A rare dust jacket, only the second we have handled. A prize for any collector of film sources or classic horror fiction. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Very good plus in a Very Good dust jacket with some small chips, a few small repairs at the spine panel (though no restoration), along with some rubbing, soiling and splitting at the folds.
