        L'ILE AU TRÉSOR

1917New York, Paris, Permanent Blind Relief War Fund Inc. 1917(?). 2 volumes in folio reliés demi-toile marron, plat percaliné marron, dos lisse titré en blanc. En 1946, l'American Foundation for Overseas Blind. Enfin, en 1977, Helen Keller International, et elle existe toujours sous ce vocable."Nous remercions le Musée Valentin Hauy pour les aimables renseignements donnés pour l'établissement de cette fiche.J'ajoute que cette association a changé plusieurs fois de nom au cours du temps.En 1925, elle devient l'American Braille Press.En 1946, l'American Foundation for Overseas Blind.

Autograph manuscript (unsigned). No place, undated [after 1917].

1917. Five 4to and one 8vo sheets. 4 1/5 pp. Rare manuscript, written entirely in Doyle's hand. At the head of the first sheet, it is entitled "General Outlines of first lecture". Doyle begins by discussing the fundamental import of the questions addressed by spiritualism in the western world: "This subject which we have met to consider is far the most important in the world. It is one which ultimately concerns the fate of every one of us. There is a certain natural impatience that so huge and engrossing a question should be raised at a time when so many mundane problems seek a solution, but there are two very good reasons for this / 1. Unless we get the spiritual lessons while still under the influence of war shock we may relapse into pre[-] war materialism. 2. These religious questions are at the base of all things, and no permanent reconstruction is possible until you get a permanent base. Therefore mundane problems really depend upon the spiritual ones. Let me say at once that I speak with all humility. It is true that I have studied the matter for 34 years, that I have had a wide personal experience of investigation and that I have some knowledge both of science and possibly of detection. But granted all that, I know how complex the matter is. I speak of my own experiences and my own conclusions and I give you my reasons for the faith - or I would rather say the knowledge - to which I have attained...I appeal to you would I not be a stock and a stone if I were not convinced of spirit return - if I not know it - and if I did not devote all that is in me to getting other people to know it. Look at what it means. See how the shadow of death thins away until it is no longer a dark cloud but rather a sun-tinted haze. It is a grand support for a man who is in danger [...]". Doyle cites several examples, including: "There is immensely interesting dialogue, which is reported a verbatim by a stenographer, between Dr. Hodgson after his death, and his friend & collaborator Hyslop, who has now joined him, but was then alive. Mrs. Piper was the medium. Hodgson was using her mechanism, and was speaking direct to Hyslop, giving reference after reference to things between them which were unknown to Mrs. Piper [...] talking of his death he said 'It is delightful to go through the cool ethereal atmosphere [...] [of] this life and shake off the mortal body [...] It is all so much better than I anticipated'. He recommended prayer as an expansion of the soul [...]". - With deletions and corrections in Doyle's hand. Doyle publicly announced his belief in spiritualism, which was strengthened by his son's wartime death in 1917. He expended a great deal of time and money to advance spiritualism - often lecturing as part of his efforts in this regard. This lecture manuscript offers fascinating and profound insight into Doyle's thoughts on the matter to which he was so devoted. - Age-toning, fold wear, and file hole at upper left of each page, otherwise very good. Accompanied by letter from James Lowe certifying authenticity of the manuscript.

Autograph Letter to André Caplet about the Violin Sonata

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the composer to his colleague and the orchestrator of many of his works, André Caplet, organizing a performance in summer 1917 and mentioning cellist Maurice Maréchal and violinist Gaston Poulet. Dated May 27, 1917. Translated from the French, in part: "We forgot about Pentecost! So: the Durand house [publishing house]; the engraver; the violinist; are leaving to breathe different dust. If your friend Maréchal were in Paris, he could replace Poulet? -- What do you say? In any case, come with a few manuscripts." 1 p., addressed on the verso in Debussy's hand. Perforated edges and one folding crease; otherwise in very fine condition. 4.5 x 6 inches (11.3 x 15.4 cm).<br style="">The Violin Sonata in G minor, L 140, for violin and piano was composed by Claude Debussy in 1917 and was the composer's last major composition and the third work in what had originally been conceived as a cycle of six sonatas for various instruments (the first two being the cello sonata, L 135, and the sonata for flute, viola and harp, L 137). The premiere had taken place place just 3 weeks prior to the present letter, on 5 May 1917, the violin part played by Gaston Poulet, with Debussy himself at the piano. It was to be the composer's last public performance.  In the present letter, he seems to lament the impossibility of pulling together the publication of the work, suggesting even that the cellist Maurice Maréchal might assist, presumably with the annotations of the string part.  <br style="">

Autograph letter signed ("W. Bourtzeff"). [Paris], 1. VI. 1917.

1917. Large 8vo. 1 p. To F. Bertelli, requesting a copy of the "New York American avec cet interview". - Due to his widely ranging personal contacts, Vladimir Bourtzeff managed to expose numerous Russian spies and agents provocateurs. "In Chicago I had the opportunity of meeting the famous Russian revolutionary Vladimir Bourtzeff. I was greatly interested in his recital of the arduous mission that had come to him of unmasking Azeff as a police spy. Azeff was undoubtedly a most exceptional phenomenon in revolutionary annals. Not that there had not been before, or since, traitors in revolutionary ranks. But Azeff was no ordinary spy, and even today the psychology of the man remains an unsolved enigma. For years he had not only been a member of the Fighting Organization of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party of Russia, but also the all-powerful head of that terrorist body. He had planned and had successfully executed numerous acts against the highest dignitaries of the Tsarist Government, and he enjoyed the absolute confidence of all his co-workers. When Bourtzeff charged Azeff, the ultra-terrorist, with being an agent of the Russian Secret Service, even the nearest friends of the accuser thought him demented. The mere suggestion of such a possibility was considered treason to the revolution, for Azeff personified the very spirit of the Russian revolutionary movement. Bourtzeff, however, was a man of dogged tenacity who possessed an unerring intuition in such matters. He had exposed a number of spies previously, and his sources of information had always proved to be entirely reliable. Yet even he underwent a long inner struggle before he could bring himself to believe in the guilt of the trusted head of the Fighting Organization The data Bourtzeff secured were incontrovertible and damned Azeff as a man who had during a period of twenty years managed to dupe the Russian Secret Service and the revolutionists at the same time. Bourtzeff succeeded in proving Azeff a traitor to both sides, and both resolved to punish Azeff by death for his monumental deceit. Yet even at the eleventh hour Azeff tricked them, by escaping without leaving a trace" (Emma Goldman: Living My Life. 1931, Kapitel 38). - On headed stationery; some browning and brownstaining.

The letter reads, ?By virtue of the authority vested in us, as the Executive Committee for an American Jewish Congress, the Jews of America are earnestly requested to select representatives to an American Jewish Congress which shall meet on September 2, 1917, at Washington DC, exclusively for the purpose of defining methods whereby, in co-operation with the Jews of the world, full rights may be secured for the Jews of all lands and all laws discriminating against them may be abrogated?? About 300, 000 ballots were cast to determine the delegates for the Conference, which was ultimately held in Philadelphia?s Independence Hall on December 15th, 1918. ?The American Jewish Congress was founded in 1918, and represented a "populist counterbalance to the American Jewish Committee, which was dominated by the wealthy and conservative German-Jewish establishment.         H.O. Camps. News Sheet. Issues No. 12 to 16.

Prince Town or Princetown, Dartmoor, Devon, England: Central News Bureau, 1917. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. A scarce newsletter put out by British conscientious objectors to the First World War. The only print copy we could find of these is at the British Library, and in a non-print format, at the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, according to OCLC First Search. While we have only five issues out of supposedly 17 that were issued, the first four issues are known not to have been printed, and the final issue, No. 17, was confiscated, and so effectively we have here a continuous run of the latter half of the publication, and surely enough issues to provide a good sense of the publication. The publication sheds light on an overlooked or downplayed part of the war's domestic front, and it cast lights on events pertaining to conscientious objectors during the course of its run, obviously reporting those events from the objectors' point-of-view. Because the objectors were scorned, coerced, castigated and stigmatized in a manner that has not been repeated in more recent wars, the news sheet makes for some poignant, at times, depressing reading. Not only were the conscientious objectors attacked and harassed by the government, which in theory had made accommodations for C.O.s, but also by the public, and it would appear that far from receiving protection from the government, they were blamed for their own victimization, with such surely fabricated charges that they incited the crowd by jeering at wounded soldiers. The articles variously detail the pleadings (sometimes in court) on behalf of the objectors; the persecution they were subjected to, both by the state and by the public acting on its own; and the generally sorry state of the camps where C.O.s were put to work by the state doing such things as cutting timber, road building and other infrastructure projects, gardening, weaving, and so forth. In one instance chronicled, the malfeasance in the camp contributed to the death of a man. There was a camp in Dartmoor, close to where the News Sheet was published, but also news was gathered from other camps. Issues addressed also include ones that might not occur to us at a remove, such as the use of some objectors as essentially foremen to regulate the work of other objectors, something the author decries as xxxxxx. Clearly, the purpose of the publication was to lift the spirits of objectors and to facilitate some solidarity among them in the face of widespread societal antipathy. The articles could be highly polemical, such as one likening the government board created to employ conscientious objectors to the Star Chamber and Inquisition. Not all the pieces were hard news or polemics. There could be anti-war poems, more literary reflections on warfare in human society, and the like. All but one issue include a page of illustration, most of which have an element of caricature and even humor. Each of the issues is 4to in size, or 25 by 19 cm, and eight pages.

'The Icy North', 'Eskimo Life', and an untitled work. Three original watercolours.

Together three original watercolours on board, each approx. 21 x 29" (530 x 730mm), signed by the artist to lower left of each image, pinholes to margins outside of image, pencilled printers' instructions to verso of each and with various dates from 1917 to 1922, minor wear to extremities of boards, but the images in bright, clean condition. Sold with large poster and postcard versions of the first two images.Evelyn Stuart Hardy (1866-1935) came from a family of Bristol artists, and received her first commission aged 9. She is best known for illustrations that appeared in children's books, many undertaken for the publisher Ernest Nister in the period 1890-1910. The first of the present watercolours shows a composite scene of explorers in the Arctic, with a ship fast in the background ice, and men in the foreground getting ready for a sledging trip, two others butchering a polar bear. The two other images depict Eskimo village scenes, the first with a woman and children, and second with a man and husky team setting off. These images appeared on postcards and posters printed by the London firm A. B. Shaw & Co. Ltd. for their "Child Life" series; the images were also used by the All-British Picture Co. Ltd. We have not been able to determine whether the images were also used a book illustrations.

[APPEARANCE OF THE MODERN RUSSIAN ALPHABET] Novoye russkoye pravopisaniye [i.e. New Russian Orthography]

Moscow: Tip. tov-va I.D. Sytina, 1917. 16 pp. In original printed wrappers. Covers rubbed with small tears of the spine. Piece of a contemporary newspaper with new alphabet glued to the front cover. Owner's pencil markings in the text. First book on a new Russian orthography with rules of the spelling and grammar and a scientific explanation of the reform. Pavel Nikitich Sakulin (1868-1930) - Russian doctor of philology and literature, member of Academy of Sciences. He was one of initiators of the Russian orthography reform. The orthography committee was created by Academy of Sciences in 1904. Some of suggested changes were pretty radical. It is widely believed that Bolsheviks and their despotism were the reason of this reform. True that the decree of the reform was first published just two months after the October revolution but it was being prepared for many years by the best Russian linguists of the time. Nevertheless this reform became the symbol of change that Bolsheviks were bringing for the country. Russian organizations abroad (emigrants) disagreed with it and continued to follow pre-revolutionary rules. This brochure was issued as a guidance how to use new Russian orthography. Because it was widely used most of the copies didn't survive to this day. Extremely rare. No copies according to Worldcat.

Publisher's Dummy for The Writings of John Muir

Boston/NY: Houghton Mifflin. [ca. 1917]. The Writings of John Muir was published over several years as a ten-volume set. This publisher's dummy, in green cloth, with gilt lettering, has the author name and publisher on the front cover; uses a "Writings of John Muir" cover as a front pastedown; with a Sierra Edition Vol. VI and Vol. I spine as a front flap, in two styles: gilt on cloth, and black leather label stamped in gilt; the title page is from a 1917 edition of The Story of My Boy-Hood and Youth. The dummy includes portions of a least five of the first six volumes, and approximately two dozen illustrations, including a frontispiece of Muir. The rear pastedown is an example of the three quarter leather binding with marbled paper boards. Offsetting to the endpages, wear to the covers and edges; only a very good copy, but an interesting amalgam, conveying a great deal of information about the forthcoming project in a very small volume that could be easily carried and shown to prospective purchasers. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Vázlatok a Hadifogságból. Sketches From the Prison of War. Piestschanka.

POW camp Peschanka, near Chita, Siberia, c. 1916-1917. - 14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mmmm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, due to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously poor, and about a quarter of the 2.1 million Austro-Hungarian soldiers which Russia held as prisoners or war did not survive. - Browned due to paper, with occasional edge flaws, but well-preserved.         1917 Wisden Original Hardback

I was very tempted to give this 1917 original hardback 10 out of 10. A can t really find any fault with it. The front and rear boards and the spine are in absolutely immaculate condition. The gilt to the front board and the spine is extremely bright and completely unrestored. Front and rear yellow pages are in almost new condition. The hinges are extremelystrong and the book has an unopened feel to it. The contents are in as new condition. It would be very difficult to find a better copy - perhaps it should really be a 10! We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the 1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition.

        The Wild Swans At Coole

Cuala Press, 1917 - 1st edition. Hardcover. Original dark blue paper boards, a little darkened at the edges, else very clean; slightly darkened buff linen spine with printed title label; the pages, and also the endpapers, which match the colour of the boards, are very clean and tidy. Only 400 copies printed. Additionally, this is an interesting association copy with an inscription from Sylvia Lynd to her husband Robert - ' Robert Lynd 27.11.17(an unbirthday present) from S.L.' The Lynds were leading figures of London literary life in the 1910s, and Robert, born in Belfast, was a journalist, author and critic, as well as an ardent Irish Nationalist. The date of the inscription was the exact day of publication, suggesting the Lynds were in Dublin at that time. In sum, a very nice, unique copy of one of Yeats's most important works. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
