Manuscript - Oil Claim Documents with Large Coloured Map of "Father of Trinidad Oil", Randolph Rust

Trinidad, 1917. [Trinidad], 1917. Guayaguayare Oil Claim Documents involving "Trinidad's Father of Oil" Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust and two British companies. One (1) signed agreement for land purchase off Guayaguayare Bay 17 December 1917, and one (1) accompanying large colour survey plan of the parcels of land; together with one (1) signed letter rescinding the agreement in 1919. All three contained in the solicitor's original envelope annotated in manuscript. Documents are made in London; text is in English. Agreement: Qto. 3 pages, string-tied, featuring a ten-shilling revenue stamp, purchasing Directors' and Secretary's original signatures, and red seal. Map: Single leaf measuring approximately 47 x 41 cm, also signed by purchaser's Secretary, folded to fit the envelope. Very good, original condition. Guayaguayare Bay is prominent in the history of Trinidad's oil industry, being the site of the first commercially viable wells drilled in Trinidad, performed by Randolph Rust and Lee Lum in May 1902. Today it remains the primary center in the petroleum industry and is home to a significant portion of Trinidad and Tobago's gas and oil reserves. The present agreement, dated 17 December 1917, constitutes an agreement for the sale of land at Guayaguayare in Trinidad, the buyer being interested in drilling oil. The seller is Graham Wells & Co. Limited, the buyer Roper River Land & Minerals Co. The distribution of company shares is also outlined. The seller's Directors and Secretary have signed the agreement and the map, the latter of which delineates several plots of land for purchase along the bay, and also shows Trinidad leasehold regions. Interestingly, the purchaser is in fact entering into "a covenant with Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust - the original vendor of the said claims", so stated in Clause 2. An enclosed letter, dated 1 December 1919 states that the Roper River corporation withdrew from the agreement as they had not requested extraction rights in the allotted time frame. The company's interest in exploiting the region for oil had not waned, however, as evidence shows them pursuing an alternate method for staking a claim in Trinidad petrol. (Efforts made in 1918 for a take over of Trinidad Dominion Oil Ltd., by the Roper River Land and Mineral Co., are also revealed in a collection of documents held by The National Archives which contains original correspondence from the Colonial Board of Trade Office relating to Trinidad.) The accompanying large colour map of Guayaguayare Bay delineates 17 acres owned by Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust which formed part of the parcel intended for purchase by Roper River Land & Minerals Co.. It also shows land owned by Lee Lum, and other persons listed in the document. Trinidad's oil drilling pioneer Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust (1854-1930), known as "the father of the oil industry in Trinidad and Tobago," played a primary role in this transaction and is named several times. Herein Rust is guaranteed indemnity against all claims and demands, and also granted a fee of £1000 along with 500 shares and the title of Director in the purchasing company. Randolph Rust had been drilling for oil in the La Brea area since 1893. in Guayaguayare Rust discovered a generous 25 acres of land yielding pools of petroleum. At the same time oil was also discovered in the Guayaguayare region in 1895 by John Lee Lum who found seepage on his property and brought him a sample. Together Rust and Lee Lum founded the Guayaguyare Oil Company in 1902. Excerpts from the manuscript: [Article 1.] "The Vendor Company will if and when requested by the Purchaser Company grant or procure to be granted or assigned to the Purchaser Company certain prospecting or other rights and options... 'the said Claims'... in and over certain blocks of land at Guayaguayare in the Ward of Mayaro in the Island of Trinidad... indicated upon a plan marked C..." [Article 2.] "... the Purchaser Company which has a nominal capital of Two hundred and Fifty Thousand Pounds divided into Five hundred thousand shares of Ten Shillings each." "... enter into a covenant with Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust the original vendor of the said claims..." "... to indemnify the said Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust from and against all claims and demands in respect thereof..." "... to pay the said Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust the sum of One Thousand Pounds... payable by the Purchaser..." "...Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust is the registered holder of five hundred shares in the Purchaser Company be appointed a Director of the Purchaser Company..." End excerpts. London born Randolph Thomas Hammond Rust (1854-1930), known as "the father of the oil industry in Trinidad and Tobago," first arrived in Trinidad in 1881, then employed in banking. His adventurous disposition led him in a different direction however, and he was soon off to British Guiana, journeying up the Mazaruni and Essequibo rivers in search of gold. Unfortunately, he contracted blackwater fever in the jungle while opening up the goldfields, and subsequently returned to Trinidad. Also in 1881, he met an American by the name of Henry Trowbridge, with whom he founded the firm, Rust Trowbridge and Company, their headquarters situated on Almond Walk in Port of Spain. They were general commission agents, merchants insurance and shipping agents, importers and exporters and wholesale dealers in provisions. Randolph Rust's interest in oil was triggered by the development of the industry in the United States. He was also encouraged by the early explorations of Walter Darwent, who in 1866 had drilled the first well on the Aripero estate in Oropouche. In 1893 Randolph Rust began drilling for oil in the La Brea area. In 1895, oil was discovered at Aripero, oil leaking onto the forest floor from a pipe which was piercing the ground surface. Investigations discovered that this was the old well of Walter Darwent. In Guayaguayare, after a difficult journey from Port of Spain by train, horseback and corial paddling up the Pilote river, he discovered to his amazement, the astonishing sight of 25 acres of land comprising puddles of asphalt and pools of petroleum. At around the same time, Rust met John Lee Lum who owned the adjoining property at Guayaguayare, and who showed him a sample of oil that he had found there on his property. The two soon decided to join forces for oil exploration. They acquired the Aripero estate, and obtained a concession over some 50 square miles at Mayaro/Guayaguayare, the early efforts being financed mainly by Lee Lum. After five unproductive, heart-breaking years, Rust finally found financial support in Canada with the firm Hiram Walker and Sons of Walkerville, Ontario and the Oil Exploration Company of Canada was created. Operations commenced at Guayaguayare on 30th May 1902, the first well drilled and oil struck one month later on 2nd July. The following years, their endeavours were met with some success but innumerable setbacks, from shipping issues to inaccessibility of terrain, lack of a proper geological guide and insufficient financing. Undaunted and ever-faithful to Trinidad and his vision for the island's potential oil revenue, Ralph Rust is nonetheless revered as the first oil pioneer of Trinidad, and also respected as a sage businessman, Councilor, Mayor of its capital city, founder of the Scout movement, and commissioned officer of the Trinidad Light Infantry Volunteers, which he commanded for the duration of the first World War. Years after his death, his unfaltering faith has finally been vindicated, and his vision finally realized. Roper River Land and Minerals Co., Ltd. was registered March 15th, 1903, to acquire the undertakings of The Empire Goldfields, Ltd., and the British South-West African Land and Mining Co., Ltd., both acquisitions being completed in 1906. The consideration was £3,000 cash and 100,000 fully-paid shares. The company's Directors were H. T. Walker, A. Matheson, and D. G. Macfie. Its properties comprised concessions covering 6,234 square miles with mineral lights over 5,890 miles in the Roper River Country, Northern Territory of South Australia, and the Subusubu (Tomento) concession, area 3,750 acres, on the Ankobra River, 45 miles from Axim, Wassau district, Gold Coast Colony. By 1910 the Australian Concessions were forfeited by the Australian Government. An interest was also held in an expedition to Northern Nigeria. The authorized capital is £250,000, in 500,000 shares of 103 each; 259,157 shares are issued, 100,000 credited as fully paid and 159,157 issued credited as 7s. 3d. pa : d and 2s. called, making 9s. 3d. paid. Shareholders were offered one share credited as 7s. 3d. paid for every old fully-paid share held. In May, 1906, 399,950 shares credited a3 7s. 3d. paid were offered for subscription on behalf of the R. R. Syndicate, Ltd. (the vendors and promoters); the subscription of 160,000 was guaranteed by the vendors. Bankers: Parrs Bank, Ltd. Auditors: Carnahy, Harrower, Barham & Co, Solicitors: Mayo, Elder & Co. Secretary and Offices: H. St. John Hodges, 2o, Copthall Avenue, E.C. . Very Good.

        Autograph manuscript (unsigned).

No place, undated [after 1917]. - Five 4to and one 8vo sheets. 4 1/5 pp. Rare manuscript, written entirely in Doyle's hand. At the head of the first sheet, it is entitled "General Outlines of first lecture". Doyle begins by discussing the fundamental import of the questions addressed by spiritualism in the western world: "This subject which we have met to consider is far the most important in the world. It is one which ultimately concerns the fate of every one of us. There is a certain natural impatience that so huge and engrossing a question should be raised at a time when so many mundane problems seek a solution, but there are two very good reasons for this / 1. Unless we get the spiritual lessons while still under the influence of war shock we may relapse into pre[-] war materialism. 2. These religious questions are at the base of all things, and no permanent reconstruction is possible until you get a permanent base. Therefore mundane problems really depend upon the spiritual ones. Let me say at once that I speak with all humility. It is true that I have studied the matter for 34 years, that I have had a wide personal experience of investigation and that I have some knowledge both of science and possibly of detection. But granted all that, I know how complex the matter is. I speak of my own experiences and my own conclusions and I give you my reasons for the faith - or I would rather say the knowledge - to which I have attained I appeal to you would I not be a stock and a stone if I were not convinced of spirit return - if I not know it - and if I did not devote all that is in me to getting other people to know it. Look at what it means. See how the shadow of death thins away until it is no longer a dark cloud but rather a sun-tinted haze. It is a grand support for a man who is in danger [.]". Doyle cites several examples, including: "There is immensely interesting dialogue, which is reported a verbatim by a stenographer, between Dr. Hodgson after his death, and his friend & collaborator Hyslop, who has now joined him, but was then alive. Mrs. Piper was the medium. Hodgson was using her mechanism, and was speaking direct to Hyslop, giving reference after reference to things between them which were unknown to Mrs. Piper [.] talking of his death he said 'It is delightful to go through the cool ethereal atmosphere [.] [of] this life and shake off the mortal body [.] It is all so much better than I anticipated'. He recommended prayer as an expansion of the soul [.]". - With deletions and corrections in Doyle's hand. Doyle publicly announced his belief in spiritualism, which was strengthened by his son's wartime death in 1917. He expended a great deal of time and money to advance spiritualism - often lecturing as part of his efforts in this regard. This lecture manuscript offers fascinating and profound insight into Doyle's thoughts on the matter to which he was so devoted. - Age-toning, fold wear, and file hole at upper left of each page, otherwise very good. Accompanied by letter from James Lowe certifying authenticity of the manuscript.

The album measures 11" x 9" and contains over 130 photographs and several specification sheets for road construction, rail yard, and industrial equipment. Most photos are 8" x 10" and mounted on linen leaves. The album and photographs are in nice shape. The album includes large, detailed photographs of the equipment. Over thirty photos show the equipment in use at work sites. One photo shows a sales team set up at a trade show. About 15 of the photographs are of artist renderings. Several line drawings and specification sheets are also mounted.

Group of 23 pen-and-ink satirical cartoons relating to training camp life during the First World War

1917 or 1918 1917 - The illustrations are done by a confident, proficient hand, with a balance of economy and detail. We assume an amateur did these drawings, but they could certainly pass for the work of a professional. The piquancy of the humor is somewhat blunted by our not knowing the officers who are being lampooned, but we can still appreciate the intended gentle levity and esprit, and additionally, the snapshots into the past. While the drawings are cartoons, the people depicted are recognizable types, and the imagery is generally vivid. Here one would scarcely have a sense of the perils that lie ahead for the recruits, and pranks, minor infractions and all around high jinks are very much the rule. The cards generally measure 112 by 138 mm, oblong, (a few are slightly smaller) and they were once mounted in an album, as evidenced by the abrasion the the center of each card's back. The cards are of a heavy stock, with ruled borders and a band of blindstamped veined lines providing something of a frame to each of the images.

His Last Bow Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes

London: John Murray, 1917., 1917. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK-FORM. Octavo. pp. 305 [6]. Bound in the publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper. A used copy showing some moderate handling and wear; cloth a little sunned and marked, gilt to spine dulled, endpapers and edges spotted, inside paper joints cracked. Remains presentable. Includes the title story, which appeared in 'The Strand' magazine in September 1917 with the subtitle 'Some War Experiences of Sherlock Holmes'; the covers bearing the tag-line 'Sherlock Holmes Outwits a German Spy'. Unlike most Holmes adventures the narration is in the third person rather than recounted by Dr. John Watson and the episode focusses on espionage and intrigue rather than mystery and detection. Due to its portrayal of British and German spies and its patriotic themes, the story is widely believed to have been conceived as a morale booster for the troops. Green & Gibson [A40a]

[Photo Album]: St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

St. Thomas, Virgin Island. [circa 1917-1924]. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". String-tied black cloth over paper boards with "Baby's Book" stamped in guilt on the front board. Contains 84 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7" and two postcards without captions. The album is near fine with some edgewear and age-toning and near fine photographs with some fading.A photo album kept by an American stationed at the U.S. Naval base in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands between 1917 and 1924. The album details daily life at the base. The photos document the results of a hurricane with images of the ruins of houses and people standing amongst the debris. Also featured are the indigenous people of the island at work and in thatched huts. One photo shows a group of native people in a group dancing. The landscape of the island as well as its native animals can be seen throughout the album with photos taken of small cities and beaches. A laid in photograph shows a night scene of a beach and is captioned "Hayti" on the verso, presumably taken on a trip to the neighboring island. The Americans on the island are also depict in their leisure activities which included tennis and trips to the beaches. A few photos show a large group of women posing at a garden party. There are photos from the naval base featuring lines of men in starch white uniforms standing at attention, and of the ships around the island. The earliest images of naval cadets and officers were most likely showing training for the First World War.In 1917 the United States purchased the island from the Danish government for $25 million in gold and it was meant to be used in World War I as part of a defensive strategy. The U.S. feared that the Germans would obtain the island to set up a naval base closer to North America. A new flag was designed and the inhabitants of St. Thomas were given U.S. citizenship. An interesting collection of snapshots from the early days of the United States Navy in St. Thomas. .

Towards the Goal. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt.

London: John Murray. 1917., 1917. ROOSEVELT'S COPY, Inscribed by the author. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's pink cloth with paper labels, faded to spine, light edgewear and bumping to spine, very good indeed. Internally clean, occasional trifling spotting. Inscribed by Mrs Ward to President Roosevelt, who wrote the foreword. A passionately written plea to America to join the First World War before it is too late. A fine association. Mary Ward was asked by Theodore Roosevelt to write a series of articles to explain to Americans what was happening in Britain during the War. The United States originally pursued a policy of non-intervention, avoiding conflict while trying to broker a peace. Woodrow Wilson unsuccessfully tried to mediate a settlement and was under pressure from former President Roosevelt who denounced German acts as "piracy". A breakdown in official relations was announced in February 1917, and following a submarine attack on seven US merchant ships, America entered the Great War in April.

183 photographs and real photo postcards of La Romana, Dominican Republic, and the 15th Marine Regiment, c. 1917

Fotografa Mañon, Santo Domingo, R.D. 1917 - 70 photographs and 113 real photo postcards of La Romana, Dominican Republic, c. 1917, removed from original album, which had been assembled by Russell G. Weiss (1906-1995) when he was a boy. In 1990 he and his wife, Grace Kurtz Weiss (1911-2000), looked through the album and wrote a statement about it that was attached to the inside of the front cover and which accompanies the photographs. His father, Paul Beers Weiss, was a pipe fitter for Central Romana Sugar Mill. Russ lived there for 7 or 8 years as a child and is the child seen in a few of the photographs. The city of La Romana was founded in 1897 as an oil town. After 1917 with the construction of a large sugar-mill the economy shifted to sugar production. The United States occupied the Dominican Republic from 1916 to 1924. The 15th Marine Regiment operated out of La Romana. Some Marines from that post joined a baseball club sponsored by the local sugar company, which played against other Dominican squads and occasionally against traveling teams from Puerto Rico. The photographs and real photo postcards offered here include many views of life in La Romana. Other locations shown include Castillo de San Jeronimo; Hiquey; Carcel de la Fortaleza; Quisqueya; Malecon in Santo Domingo; Higueral; Seibo; Port-au-Prince; the San Isidro Estate; the Receptoria in Santo Domingo; an exposition in Santiago, Cuba, and San Juan Hill; and the ruins of Columbus' palace and other ruins in Santo Domingo. There are also photos of the Marines stationed in La Romana, Santo Domingo, and Port-au-Prince; an amphibious plane; the sugar mill; and the port of Romana. The Marines are seen both in uniform and in casual situations including swimming, cave exploring, and playing baseball. There is one view captioned "Place Where Marines Were Ambushed." Produced variously by Fotografa Manon in Santo Domingo, R.D., and by a photographer attached to the Marines (identified as Hoenes, U.S.M.C.). Some have captions added by the photographer, others had typed captions in the albums which have been housed with the photographs, and other have no identification. In Very Good Condition: some of original black album paper remains on back of both photographs and real photo postcards, but does not cover any identifications because none were written on the backs; occasional light soiling on images. A remarkable collection documenting life in the Dominican Republic and the activities of the U.S.M.C. in and around the town of La Romana in the period 1916-1920.

Nozione di parallelismo in una varietà qualunque e conseguente specificazione geometrica della curvatura Riemanniana.

Palermo, 1917. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Author's presentation offprint with the printed presentation statement on top of frontwrapper "Offerto dall' Autore" [i.e. "Given by the author"]. Offprint from Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo", Tomo XLII [42], Anno 1917. Very small tear to outer margin of front wrappers, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 33 pp.. Rare offprint, with the author's printed dedication to front wrapper, of Levi-Civita's famous paper in which he introduced of the concept of parallelism in curved spaces now know as 'Levi-Civita Connection'. In Riemannian geometry, the Levi-Civita connection is a specific connection on the tangent bundle of a manifold. "His own original research culminated in 1917 in the introduction of the concept of parallelism in curved spaces that now bears his name; it furnishes a simple law for transporting a vector parallel to itself along a curve in a space of n dimensions. With this new concept, absolute differential calculus, having absorbed other techniques, became tensor calculus, now the essential instrument of the unitary relativistic theories of gravitation and electromagnetism. Two of the concept's many applications and generalizations were in the "geometry of paths," which extends the concept of Riemannian variety, and in the theory of spaces with affine and projective connections, which is used with the geometry for a complete representation of electromagnetic phenomena in the framework of general relativity. In studying the stability of the phenomena of motion, Levi-Civita used a general method, which, by means of a periodic solution of a first-order differential system, restores stability or instability to the study of certain point transformations. He ascertained that periodic solutions, in a first approximation of apparent stability, prove instead to be unstable. Another of Levi-Civita's contributions to analytical mechanics was the general theory of stationary motions, in which moving bodies passing the same spot always do so at the same speed. The theory enabled him to find with a uniform method all the known cases of stationary motion and also to discover new ones." (DSB).Tullio Levi-Civita, (1873 - 1941) was an Italian mathematician, famous for his work on absolute differential calculus (tensor calculus) and its applications to the theory of relativity, but who also made significant contributions in other areas. He was a pupil of Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro, the inventor of tensor calculus. His work included foundational papers in both pure and applied mathematics, celestial mechanics, analytic mechanics and hydrodynamics

Asbury spent several years as an assistant state chemist at the North Carolina Experiment Station before taking a similar job at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station on the campus of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University), serving from 1904 until his retirement. Asbury was also interested in Texas history. He was assistant state chemist of Texas for 45 years. He began working on a project where history would be intensified through its mixture with verse, music, and acting. Edward William Thomson (1849-1924): The name of E. W. Thomson is a household word among Canadian literary men, and stands for a skilled craftsman in both prose and verse. . . . . The dramatic and thoughtful power of his stanzas, his finished workmanship, the gentleness and breadth of his love for humanity, all stamp his work as that of an artist of whom Canadians have good reason to be proud, and of the first rank of our litterateurs.- W.
