A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

London: Egoist Press,, 1917 [i.e. 1918]. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to front board in blind and to spine gilt. Spine panel slightly faded, spine rolled and starting but text block tight, endpapers lightly toned. A very good copy. The so-called second edition, and the first edition to be printed in the UK. It was preceded by the English issue of the Huebsch edition of 1916. Due at least in part to the adverse reception of the Egoist serialisation of A Portrait, no English printer would print the book for fear of prosecution under the obscenity laws, so Huebsch undertook the true first publication in the US. He send around 750 sets of American sheets for issue in the UK in February 1917; it was preceded by the US issue in December 1916.

Sir John Simon's Speech for the Defence. Sir John Simon's Speech for the Defence. [Privately Printed]. VISCOUNT SIMON'S PRESENTATION COPY WITH A.L. VISCOUNT SIMON'S PRESENTATION COPY WITH A.L.s

Privately Printed for Stevens and Sons by C.F. Roworth, 1917. 8vo., First Edition, with a full-page plan; strongly bound in contemporary red buckram, backstrip lettered in gilt, uncut, ORIGINAL WRAPPERS PRESERVED, a near fine copy. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM SIR JOHN (LATER VISCOUNT) SIMON TO MAJOR A W H JAMES WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT WRAPPER. A FINE AND RELEVANT A.L.s FROM SIMON TO JAMES IS MOUNTED ON REAR ENDPAPER. The letter is written from HQ, Royal Flying Corps, where Simon served briefly on Lord Trenchard's staff during WWI. Major James has noted the context in a neat hand on inner wrapper: 'Immediately after the trial John Simon came out to HQ, RFC, France, and was attached under instruction to my squadron, No. 6, at Abeele. I had known Simon when I was at Cambridge, and he and Ernest Burge had a hunting box at Huntingdon. John Simon, whom I got to know very well later, in the same mess at HQ. RFC, and later in the H. of C [House of Commons] was intrigued to meet someone who knew his client, Malcolm, well. John Allsebrook Simon, KC, 1st Viscount Simon (1873-1954) is one of only three British politicians to have served as Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary [under Churchill] and Chancellor of the Exchequer. In the sensational trial of Lieutenant [Douglas] Malcolm of the Royal Artillery for the murder of Anton Baumberg [Count de Borch], Simon led the Defence. After the summing-up by the Judge [Justice McCardie] the Jury retired and after twenty-five minutes' absence returned a verdict of 'Not Guilty'. RARE, AND IN THIS CASE CONTEXTUALLY UNIQUE.

["No. 27 | Der letzte Streitpunkt"]. Originalzeichnung, signiert "KAW". O. O., [wohl 1917].

A SON OF THE MIDDLE BORDER

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1917. Reprint. Hardcover. Both hinges cracked and repaired. Good copy with a great association. Decorated cloth. Illustrated by Alice Barber Stephens. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Garland to Albert Bigelow Paine, "the biographer of Mr./O possum and Mr./B. Crow, and others./From his admiring/friend- and family./H. Garland/Jan. 1918./The year of the/End of the great war." There are also a handful of notes and corrections to the text (including the spelling of Paine's name on p. 419!) presumably in Garland or Paine's hand. Laid in are two 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" original photographs--one a fine portrait of Garland and the other of Garland's Wisconsin residence--each INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Garland to Paine. Wonderful association material of two significant turn-of-the-century literary figures, both of whom used the American West as subject material. Paine, of course, is known also as Mark Twain's biographer.

Abridged from Malory?s Morte d?Arthur by Alfred W. Pollard. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: Macmillan and Co., 1917.Edition de Luxe. Limited to 500 copies (this being copy No. 128), numbered and signed by the artist. Quarto (11 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 282 x 226 mm.). [2, half-title], [2, limitation leaf], [iii]-xxiv, 509, [1, blank] pp. Sixteen mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards, and seventy drawings in black and white.Publisher's full vellum over boards pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others uncut. Upper corner of front board expertly straightened, light soiling/marking to spine and back cover. Overall a very good copy of a hard to find title. Housed in a fleece-lined, blue cloth slipcase."The Romance of King Arthur (1917) was another wartime book, commissioned, like the Allies' Fairy Book, to reflect - and cash in upon - the nations' mood of patriotism, and martial endevour. In preparing for the commission, Rackham turned to his own copy of Beardsley's Morte D'Arthur and, following the pattern of the Beardsley version, drew square and rectangular chapter heardings to be set at irregular intervals up and down the page. As in Beardsley, these have a stark black and white appearance, though Rackham cannot resist the occasional wryly humorous touch such as a barking dog or a jester's head. The closest Rackham comes to Beardsley, however, is in his illustration of Sangreal, a flaming lidded chalice carried by an attenuated golden-haired white-robed maiden. This homage to Aubrey is based closely on Beardsley's own angel in The Achieving of the Sangreal, the frontispiece to Volume Two of Morte D'Arthur."(James Hamilton. Arthur Rackham. A Biography. pp.111-112).Latimore and Haskell, p. 47. Riall, p. 130.

        L'ILE AU TRÉSOR

1917New York, Paris, Permanent Blind Relief War Fund Inc. 1917(?). 2 volumes in folio reliés demi-toile marron, plat percaliné marron, dos lisse titré en blanc. Autograph manuscript (unsigned). No place, undated [after 1917].

1917. Five 4to and one 8vo sheets. 4 1/5 pp. Rare manuscript, written entirely in Doyle's hand. At the head of the first sheet, it is entitled "General Outlines of first lecture". Doyle begins by discussing the fundamental import of the questions addressed by spiritualism in the western world: "This subject which we have met to consider is far the most important in the world. It is one which ultimately concerns the fate of every one of us. There is a certain natural impatience that so huge and engrossing a question should be raised at a time when so many mundane problems seek a solution, but there are two very good reasons for this / 1. Unless we get the spiritual lessons while still under the influence of war shock we may relapse into pre[-] war materialism. 2. These religious questions are at the base of all things, and no permanent reconstruction is possible until you get a permanent base. Therefore mundane problems really depend upon the spiritual ones. Let me say at once that I speak with all humility. It is true that I have studied the matter for 34 years, that I have had a wide personal experience of investigation and that I have some knowledge both of science and possibly of detection. But granted all that, I know how complex the matter is. I speak of my own experiences and my own conclusions and I give you my reasons for the faith - or I would rather say the knowledge - to which I have attained...I appeal to you would I not be a stock and a stone if I were not convinced of spirit return - if I not know it - and if I did not devote all that is in me to getting other people to know it. Look at what it means. See how the shadow of death thins away until it is no longer a dark cloud but rather a sun-tinted haze. It is a grand support for a man who is in danger [...]". Doyle cites several examples, including: "There is immensely interesting dialogue, which is reported a verbatim by a stenographer, between Dr. Hodgson after his death, and his friend & collaborator Hyslop, who has now joined him, but was then alive. Mrs. Piper was the medium. Hodgson was using her mechanism, and was speaking direct to Hyslop, giving reference after reference to things between them which were unknown to Mrs. Piper [...] talking of his death he said 'It is delightful to go through the cool ethereal atmosphere [...] [of] this life and shake off the mortal body [...] It is all so much better than I anticipated'. He recommended prayer as an expansion of the soul [...]". - With deletions and corrections in Doyle's hand. Doyle publicly announced his belief in spiritualism, which was strengthened by his son's wartime death in 1917. He expended a great deal of time and money to advance spiritualism - often lecturing as part of his efforts in this regard. This lecture manuscript offers fascinating and profound insight into Doyle's thoughts on the matter to which he was so devoted. - Age-toning, fold wear, and file hole at upper left of each page, otherwise very good. Accompanied by letter from James Lowe certifying authenticity of the manuscript.

Autograph Letter to André Caplet about the Violin Sonata

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the composer to his colleague and the orchestrator of many of his works, André Caplet, organizing a performance in summer 1917 and mentioning cellist Maurice Maréchal and violinist Gaston Poulet. Dated May 27, 1917. Translated from the French, in part: "We forgot about Pentecost! So: the Durand house [publishing house]; the engraver; the violinist; are leaving to breathe different dust. If your friend Maréchal were in Paris, he could replace Poulet? -- What do you say? In any case, come with a few manuscripts." 1 p., addressed on the verso in Debussy's hand. Perforated edges and one folding crease; otherwise in very fine condition. 4.5 x 6 inches (11.3 x 15.4 cm).<br style="">The Violin Sonata in G minor, L 140, for violin and piano was composed by Claude Debussy in 1917 and was the composer's last major composition and the third work in what had originally been conceived as a cycle of six sonatas for various instruments (the first two being the cello sonata, L 135, and the sonata for flute, viola and harp, L 137). The premiere had taken place place just 3 weeks prior to the present letter, on 5 May 1917, the violin part played by Gaston Poulet, with Debussy himself at the piano. It was to be the composer's last public performance.  In the present letter, he seems to lament the impossibility of pulling together the publication of the work, suggesting even that the cellist Maurice Maréchal might assist, presumably with the annotations of the string part.  <br style="">

Autograph letter signed ("W. Bourtzeff"). [Paris], 1. VI. 1917.

1917. Large 8vo. 1 p. To F. Bertelli, requesting a copy of the "New York American avec cet interview". - Due to his widely ranging personal contacts, Vladimir Bourtzeff managed to expose numerous Russian spies and agents provocateurs. "In Chicago I had the opportunity of meeting the famous Russian revolutionary Vladimir Bourtzeff. I was greatly interested in his recital of the arduous mission that had come to him of unmasking Azeff as a police spy. Azeff was undoubtedly a most exceptional phenomenon in revolutionary annals. Not that there had not been before, or since, traitors in revolutionary ranks. But Azeff was no ordinary spy, and even today the psychology of the man remains an unsolved enigma. For years he had not only been a member of the Fighting Organization of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party of Russia, but also the all-powerful head of that terrorist body. He had planned and had successfully executed numerous acts against the highest dignitaries of the Tsarist Government, and he enjoyed the absolute confidence of all his co-workers. When Bourtzeff charged Azeff, the ultra-terrorist, with being an agent of the Russian Secret Service, even the nearest friends of the accuser thought him demented. The mere suggestion of such a possibility was considered treason to the revolution, for Azeff personified the very spirit of the Russian revolutionary movement. Bourtzeff, however, was a man of dogged tenacity who possessed an unerring intuition in such matters. He had exposed a number of spies previously, and his sources of information had always proved to be entirely reliable. Yet even he underwent a long inner struggle before he could bring himself to believe in the guilt of the trusted head of the Fighting Organization The data Bourtzeff secured were incontrovertible and damned Azeff as a man who had during a period of twenty years managed to dupe the Russian Secret Service and the revolutionists at the same time. Bourtzeff succeeded in proving Azeff a traitor to both sides, and both resolved to punish Azeff by death for his monumental deceit. Yet even at the eleventh hour Azeff tricked them, by escaping without leaving a trace" (Emma Goldman: Living My Life. 1931, Kapitel 38). - On headed stationery; some browning and brownstaining.

THE CALL FOR THE AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS

New York. 1917. Paperback. 1st Edition. 4to. 2 pages ; 28 cm. The original call for the election of delegates for the 1st American Jewish Congress. Almost certainly the first ever outwardly facing publication to discuss the AJC. The letter reads, ?By virtue of the authority vested in us, as the Executive Committee for an American Jewish Congress, the Jews of America are earnestly requested to select representatives to an American Jewish Congress which shall meet on September 2, 1917, at Washington DC, exclusively for the purpose of defining methods whereby, in co-operation with the Jews of the world, full rights may be secured for the Jews of all lands and all laws discriminating against them may be abrogated?? About 300, 000 ballots were cast to determine the delegates for the Conference, which was ultimately held in Philadelphia?s Independence Hall on December 15th, 1918. ?The American Jewish Congress was founded in 1918, and represented a "populist counterbalance to the American Jewish Committee, which was dominated by the wealthy and conservative German-Jewish establishment. "Leaders within the American Jewish community, consisting of Jewish, Zionist, and immigrant community organizations, convened the first American Jewish Congress (AJCongress) in Philadelphia's historic Independence Hall. Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, Felix Frankfurter, U. S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, and others joined to lay the groundwork for a national democratic organization of Jewish leaders from all over the country, to rally for equal rights for all Americans regardless of race, religion or national ancestry. ? (Wikipedia, 2016) This copy of the original Call for the congress outlines the process by which the delegates will be elected, and lays out the overall purpose of the Congress.
