Das schmerzliche Meer. Frühe und neue Gedichte.

Dresdner Verlag von 1917, (Dresden). 1918.. 177 S. 8°, Orig.-Pappbd. mit handgearb. Buntpapierbezug.. Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Bll. teils stockfleckig, Einband leicht berieben u. bestoßen. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.         Cats at Play

London: Blackie and Son Limited, [1917]. - Flying Fur, Caterwauling. and Cats on the BandstandWAIN, Louis. Cats at Play. London: Blackie and Son Limited, n.d. [1917]. First edition. Folio (13 1/8 x 10 1/8 in; 334 x 258 mm). Twelve pages with one to two captioned scenes in color, inner covers illustrated in black and white. Publisher's full color staple-bound pictorial wrappers. Oxidation at staples, light wear at edges and spine head, third gathering loose at two staples (of three). An excellent copy of a book that would normally have been destroyed by child.A particularly difficult Wain title to find in any condition; here, in this condition, a miracle. We have never seen another copy of this book in over 45 years At the end of the last century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells)."From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled although he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!" (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914).Dale 34.Footnote: Not to be confused with another book of the same title [WAIN, Louis. RACKHAM, Arthur. SMITH, H. Officer. GLADWIN, May, et al. Cats At Play. London: John F. Shaw, n.d. [c. 1900-1904].         Mitteilungs-Blatt des Verbandes der sozialdemokratischen Wahlvereine Berlins und Umgegend. 12. Jahrgang, Nr. 1, 1. April 1917 bis Nr. 53, 31. März 1918.

Adolf Hoffmann, Berlin. 1917-1918.. Je 4, 6 bzw. 8 S. Fol.. (Seywald 680).

First Edition, first issue (so stated), of Conrad's third autobiographical (though fictionalized) work -- "a Far-Eastern story of a haunted ship. This copy is printed on laid paper, as usual (some copies, perhaps those intended for the colonies, are on wove paper). This is a fine copy (spine lettering slightly dull, as usual for this wartime book). Cagle A21a.1. With the bookplate of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger. Housed in a custom clamshell case.~This copy is inscribed and signed by Conrad, "John Millais | from his friend | J. Conrad | March 1917 [the month of publication]". Sir John Everett Millais (1888-1920), the grandson of the famous Pre-Raphaelite painter by the same name, was a neighbor of the Conrads in Kent, who during the years 1916-1920 frequently came over to play chess with Conrad. A lieutenant in the Royal Navy, he had seen action on board the HMS Stephen Furness, but developed tuberculosis and was forced to retire in 1916, the year before this presentation; he succumbed to the disease in 1920, at the age of 32. His mother and Conrad's wife were also best of friends. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        J.M. Keynes Letter Signed

St. Louis St. Louis, 1917. Autograph Letter Signed by J.M. Keynes To Oswald Toynbee Falk, a stockbroker and a close friend of Keynes. "[St Louis approaching New York] 11 Sept 1917. My dear Falk, I have had the enclosed letter from Herbert Samuel and have promised to do my best to secure such an article as he indicates. Will you try your hand? I should be very grateful if you would. I suspect that in your usual way you will disclaim the competence. But I would undertake to be the judge of that. In any case you might perhaps fortify yourself with collective wisdom by getting your dining party to discuss it first. I am not sure it wouldn't prove a very instructive topic. If so, perhaps I might bring Mr. Samuel as a guest? I expect to be back in England by the end of the first week of October. Sincerely yours J.M. Keynes." Written on printed letterhead of the Royal Economic Society, Kings College, Cambridge (From Mr. J. M. Keynes, Editor of the Economic Journal). Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Letters signed by Keynes seldom enter the marketplace. Oswald Falk is regarded by Robert Skidelsky as the man who understood John Maynard Keynes' mind more than any of his contemporaries. He argues that it was Falk who gave Keynes' his superb understanding of the unruly financial mechanism of capitalism? which distinguished his work from that of his contemporaries (Skidelsky, 1992, 25). The London stockbroker, Nicholas Davenport, recalled that Falk spent a lot of time with Keynes speculating in currency and commodity deals. According to the economist Tommy Balogh who worked for Falk it was his mentor who gave Keynes the insights to develop his theory of liquidity preference by understanding the gilt-edged securities market. Skidelsky regreted that Falk, the most perceptive contemporary Keynes-watcher did not write a memoir of Keynes when perhaps he could have.

This copy is printed on laid paper, as usual (some copies, perhaps those intended for the colonies, are on wove paper). This is a remarkably fine, bright copy. Cagle A21a.1. Housed in a (dried) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~This copy is inscribed and signed by Conrad, "Arthur Symons | from | Joseph Conrad | March 1917 [the month of publication]". Arthur Symons (1865-1945) was an author, a poet and a critic who was extremely influential in the "symbolist school" of the 1890s. As editor of The Savoy, in 1896 he published Conrad's first short story ("The Idiots"); according to Conrad's wife, Symons was the only poet Conrad read for pleasure (such that he used a Symons verse as the epigraph for TWIXT LAND & SEA in 1912). Symons and Conrad wound up as neighbors in Kent, and also had in common severe bouts with "nerves" during the years 1909-1912.

        The Unholy Three

New York: John Lane Company, 1917 New York: John Lane Company. 1917. First. First edition. Fine in lovely near fine example of the dustwrapper with a tear on the rear panel, tiny nicks at the extremities, and with old tape repairs professionally removed leaving shadows only on the inside of the jacket. Housed in an attractive, albeit somewhat loosely-fitting clamshell case. Creepy crime novel about a team of circus freaks: Tweedledee, a midget, Hercules, the strong man, and Echo, the ventriloquist, who commit heinous crimes. Filmed twice by MGM, as a silent in 1925 and remade as a talkie with Lon Chaney as Echo and Henry Earles as Tweedledee in both versions, Victor McLaughlin played Hercules in the silent version, Ivan Linow in the talkie. The classic Tod Browning cult film Freaks also based on a Robbins story "Spurs" that was clearly derivative from The Unholy Three. Earles reprised his midget role, there was a strongman named Hercules, and a few other freaks were thrown into the mix. Rare in jacket, and never seen in this condition. .

Into the Dead Heart, The Cruise of the Avocet, and two other works

W.K. Thomas, 1914-, Adelaide 1917 - Duodecimo, four books bound together in contemporary quarter roan with gilt lettering; with a total of 83 photo plates (some folding), excellent condition with original printed wrappers bound in. An outstanding collection of Australian ornithology and central desert travel narratives by pioneering conservationist and Aboriginal advocate Samuel Albert White (1870-1954). White is remembered as an intrepid traveller of the central Australia and for his collaboration with Gregory Matthews on the definitive ornithology reference The Birds of Australia. Born in Adelaide, White served in South Africa and upon his return participated in several major overland expeditions, including a journey to Alice Springs by camel in 1913 and the Musgrave and Everard ranges in 1914. White later accompanied expeditions to Cooper Creek, the Nullarbor, and the Finke River; he later played a prominent role in the creation of South Australian national parks. As reflected in these books, White sought the companionship of the central desert Aborigines and advocated their welfare in the public arena. In particular, Into the Dead Heart contains significant ethnological description of the desert tribes, including anecdotal descriptions of the author's interactions with individual Aboriginal people. Another work within this bound collection titled On the Flooded Murray River contains a sub-chapter titled "Native Art and Rock Shelters. An old camping ground visited". Here White records an excursion to a Victorian rock art site, complete with a large folding plate comprising images of the cave, its art, and the author's companions Messers. Zeitz and Bellchambers. These four books are originally from the collection of surgeon and South Australian resident Dr. Edward Angas Johnson, and have been inscribed to him by Captain White. The front endpaper bears the bookplate of Adelaide city council alderman Charles R. F. Glover, an assiduous collector of Australiana and ethnological artefacts. Details of the four titles are as follows: Into the Dead Heart. An Ornithological Trip through Central Australia. 1914, 154 pp., 26 full-page photo plates. The Cruise of the Avocet. In Search of Skuas and other Things. [1916], 68pp, 15 full-page photo plates, all ornithological in nature. Ooldea, on the East-West Railway, On the Flooded Murray River. [1917], 88pp., 29 full-page photo plates (three folding). In the Far North-East. A Scientific Expedition. [1917], 144pp., 13 full-page photo plates. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Rinconete and Cortadillo

The Four Seas Company, Boston 1917 - This little masterpiece gives perhaps the best sketch of Spanish low-life that has come down to us. The book has been translated from the Spanish with an introduction and notes by Mariano J. Lorente with a preface by R. B. Cunninghame Graham. Riconete and Cortadillo is more intimate than even Lazarillo de Tormes, truer to nature than Guzman de Alfarache and.and I suppose because Cervantes says so, that it is exemplary. " There are hours of recreation in which the affected spirit rests" to quote Cervantes.Certainly Rinconete and Cortadillo is a work of recreation, and the affected spirit of reading it may rest and smile at the humor it contains. book is as new unread, flawless, which is amazing for a book printed almost one-hundred years ago. There are eight fine plates by Atalana. Book has a hand made binding by Pat Magarick with a beautiful bluebell and vine paper over boards, spine is quarter bound in green Moroccan with gilt lettering and four fine raised bands. Corner tips are also bound in fine green Moroccan. paste-downs and first free and last free end papers are of the same paper as the cover. The book is housed in a custom slipcase with a leather label with gilt lettering on the front. A truly spectacular collectible and a treasure for any library. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Included is a 4-1/8" x 8-1/2" original photograph of John Reed on stage in costume annotated in Louise Bryant's hand on the rear: "The Game-- A Morality Play By Louise Bryant-- John Reed as Death." With the stamped credit information for photographer Paul Thompson. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed's life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed's best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed's firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917.

Kokain. Mit sieben Zeichnungen von Felixmüller.

Dresdner Verlag von 1917, (Dresden). 1918.. 43 S. Mit 7 ganzs. Illustrationen. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 5. - Raabe, Kat.         J.M. Keynes Letter Signed

St. Louis, 1917. St. Letters signed by Keynes seldom enter the marketplace.Oswald Falk is regarded by Robert Skidelsky as the man who understood John Maynard Keynes' mind more than any of his contemporaries.

The Quest Of Mary Selwyn Sequel to Uncle Frank's Mary

Benziger Brothers NY 1917. Very Good with no dust jacket Hardcover Second book in the Mary Selwyn series which became so popular that two other, smaller books were later written to explain what led Mary to where she began. "Uncle Frank's Mary" (the first book in the series) is also available. Light soil on boards, top edge "dusty". There is a very faint stain along top edge of a few pages in some signatures, but not all, leading me to believe the stain occurred prior to binding. However, there is a stain on rear board that permeates onto rear endpapers. Fade spots on spine. Nevertheless, a very good clean tight binding which matches binding of the first book in the series, "Uncle Frank's Mary". Mary Selwyn Series; Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall; 245 pages; 26788

The Innocents: A Story for Lovers

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1917. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (with the required "Published October, 1917" and the "F-R" code --- light rubs to the spine ends and board corners, front board's upper right corner lightly tapped, minor mark to the closed page block's upper edge, the front free endpaper is signed "Sinclair Lewis" and there dated, but we do not represent or warrant it to be the author's signature), without the scarce dust jacket; an expanded version of a tale that earlier had been serially published in the Woman's Home Companion magazine, and the last of Lewis' novels published by Harper & Brothers. After contracting with Harcourt, Brace for then-future works, Lewis produced the full novel in order to fulfill his contractual obligations to Harper. Under these circumstances, Lewis did not produce his best work and the book was not a success. Sinclair Lewis won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." Of him, H.L. Mencken wrote: "[If] there was ever a novelist among us with an authentic call to the trade ... it is this red-haired tornado from the Minnesota wilds." Copies of "The Innocents" in its first edition, first printing are rather uncommon to the market as befits an unsuccessful book, and copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are more uncommon still. A Near Fine to Fine copy. SCARCE.
