Towards the Goal. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt

London: John Murray. 1917, 1917. ROOSEVELT'S COPY, Inscribed by the author. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's pink cloth with paper labels, faded to spine, light edgewear and bumping to spine, very good indeed. Internally clean, occasional trifling spotting. Inscribed by Mrs Ward to President Roosevelt, who wrote the foreword. A passionately written plea to America to join the First World War before it is too late. A fine association. Mary Ward was asked by Theodore Roosevelt to write a series of articles to explain to Americans what was happening in Britain during the War. The United States originally pursued a policy of non-intervention, avoiding conflict while trying to broker a peace. Woodrow Wilson unsuccessfully tried to mediate a settlement and was under pressure from former President Roosevelt who denounced German acts as "piracy". A breakdown in official relations was announced in February 1917, and following a submarine attack on seven US merchant ships, America entered the Great War in April.

Complete Atlas of China Containing Separate Maps of the Eighteen Provinces of China Proper on the Scale of 1:3,000,000 and of the Four Great Dependencies on the Scale of 1:7,500,000 Together with An Index to All the Names on the Maps with the Latitute and Longitude of Each Place. All Railways, Telegraph Stations, Ports, & Protestant Mission Stations Marked

London.: China Inland Mission.. Second edition. Revised.. 1917.. Map of China with 22 other maps showing eighteen provinces all in colour, some double page and one with fold-out. Original maroon cloth little marked and lightly rubbed at corners, decorative title on upper cover, cover at lower edge trifle wavy where label has been removed, ex-library with library labels on endpapers and small library mark at foot of spine, lower endpaper browned. Quarto. Maps are very good and clean. This atlas gives a very good picture of the field of Protestant missions in China at the beginning of the 20th century. The first edition of this atlas was published in 1908, and due to the production of 4 wall maps between the publication of the two atlases, the China Inland Mission Society worked hard at continually revising and correcting its Chinese maps. This work means that there are quite considerable differences between this edition and the first edition of this atlas. It is clear on reading the 5 page preface how seriously the project to create an Atlas was undertaken and how much work went into the publication. "As not every Missionary Society publishes a map showing its own stations, and as the maps published by some Societies do not show all the places marked in their reports, it has been necessary to correspond with not a few Societies and missionaries to try and locate each place. Even under the circumstances there are two or three places which it has not been possible to locate; but the writer can say that no pains have been spared to make the Atlas as complete as possible and to identify places spelt differently on different maps by different Societies...."         Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, January 1917 - November 1922

These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922. Here is a truly fine set - the finest we've offered. All three volumes appear unread, in remarkably clean and bright dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are all immaculate - clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually now wear with the exception of a few tiny corner bumps. The contents of all three volumes are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red stained top edges retain strong, vivid color entirely free of any sunning. All three dust jackets are crisp, clean, and retain bright white color. No tears. No losses. There were two prices on the dust jacket flaps - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after January 31st, 1978. Both prices are unclipped on all three dust jackets. The spine lettering of this edition proved highly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set retains bright, clear, absolutely perfect spine lettering on all three volumes. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302d.

On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra

Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of all three parts of one of Bohr's most influential works: his groundbreaking paper on the "correspondence principle." On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra "was to have been divided into four parts. Part I: On the general theory was finished in November 1917, and was ready from the printer on April 27, 1918. Part II: On the hydrogen spectrum appeared in print on December 30, 1918. Part III: On the elements of higher atomic number was greatly delayed because of the rapid development of the field, by Bohr and others, until it was finally printed in November 1922 together with an Appendix dealing with later work and serving to bring the treatise to a natural conclusion. Part IV, in which the generally theory was to have been applied to the constitution of atoms and molecules, was never completed. "The treatise was published as a Memoir of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (Dan. Vid. Selsk. Skrifter, naturvid.-mat. Afd., 8. Raekke, Bd. IV, Nr. 1 (1918)). This medium of publication, prompted by the size of the treatise, and the unsettled conditions existing in Europe at the time, undoubtedly contributed to the slowness with which Bohr's novel way of treating the problems of quantum theory became known to most physicists. "Bohr's treatise is as comprehensive as the titles of its four parts indicate. It is unified by the fundamental assumption of an analogy between the quantum theory and classical electrodynamics, a point of view which a couple of years later came to be called the 'correspondence principle.'… [T]his principle.. was destined to serve as the principle guide to the progress of the quantum theory in the early twenties, and which later was built into the quantum mechanics" (J.R. Nielsen, The Correspondence Principle). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Bohr's invention of the correspondence principle. Nobel prize to N. Bohr awarded in 1922 'for his investigation of the structure of atoms, and of the radiation emanating from them'". Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos, 1918-1922. Quarto, original wrappers; custom cloth box. Soiling to wrappers of volume I. Faint evidence of stamp on front wrappers of vols. I and II. Text pristine and almost entirely unopened. Rare, particularly with all three parts in original wrappers.

1917. Good. [AVIATION] Frank Champion. TSUITO KINEN SHASHINCHO. Kochi, Japan: Kochi Shinbunsha, et al., Taisho 6 [1917] Oblong tassle-bound album, 15.3 x 22.6 cm., With extensive descriptive captioning and text and many textual illustrations in collotype of the events around the accidental death of the American Frank Champion during a stunt-flying exhibition outside of Kochi City in July 1917. Champion was a great attraction during his barnstorming trip to Japan and had performed for the Taisho Emperor in Tokyo. Indeed, after his death, the emperor requested and received the aircraft engine from the wreck and mounted it as a memorial in the Palace grounds. Champion (1884-1917) himself was an early pioneer of American aviation. He is given the distinction of being the first aviator from Oklahoma. When WW1 reduced interest in barnstorming in the US, he took his air show to Asia. A very interesting album. For more on Champion, see Save for some warping of the covers, in good condition overall.

Rhododendrons In which is set forth an account of all species of the genus Rhododendron (including Azaleas) and the various hybrids . [With:] Rhododendrons and the Various Hybrids. Second Series

      - London, New York, [etc.]: Longmans, Green & Co, 1917-1924. 2 volumes, folio. (16 x 11 7/8 inches). Titles in red and black, half-titles. 114 plates (34 coloured after Archibald Thorburn, Beatrice Parsons, E.F. Brennand, Winifred Walker, Lilian Snelling, 28 uncoloured collotypes, 52 uncoloured half-tone). Publisher's burgundy cloth, upper covers titled in gilt, flat spines lettered in gilt. A fine set of this limited edition monograph, with beautiful illustrations of the most spectacular genus of flowering shrubs. Limited edition of 550 sets. It is clear from the preface to the first volume, that Millais' original intention had been to "consolidate in one volume all that is known of the Genus Rhododendron" (preface). However, the huge increase in the hybridization of the genus, together with some spectacular new discoveries led him to publish the second volume. The text of both volumes remained true to Millais wish that the work should be "of practical use to the gardener" with chapters on "love of gardening and gardens," "hybrid rhododendrons", "rhododendrons for every month" as well as an alphabetical list of all known Rhododenrons with a description and useful notes on their discovery, cultivation, etc. The text is accompanied by some excellent half-tone plates, 28 collotype plates and 34 very fine coloured plates from watercolours by Archibald Thorburn (2), Lilian Snelling (7), Beatrice Parsons (7), Eunice F. Brennand (6) and Winifred Walker (13). Nissen BBI 1369 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
