The Ideal Giant. The Code of a Herdsman. Cantelman's Spring- Mate. Privately Printed for the Little Review.

The Little Review., London 1917 - Octavo. Original cream cloth-backed white paper-covered card folder. 44pp stapled and then bound into folder with single cord. Folder illustrated with a Vorticist design by Lewis. Heavily marked, stained and darkened, edges rubbed, slight area of loss to paper cover to top edge of upper cover, a series of tiny prickmarks to upper cover, staples rusted. One of 200 copies (though Pound & Grover speculate that perhaps only fifty copies of the folder were made). With an ink presentation inscription from Lewis 'To dear Alic(k) Schepeler from P.Wyndham Lewis 1/12/17'. Alick Schepler, lover and friend of Lewis and other writers and artists notably W.B.Yeats, worked for the Illustrated London News. Addressed in letters by Lewis variously as 'Alic.' 'Alick' and 'Alec'. from 1914-1917. Alick Schepeler who worked as a secretary on the Illustrated London News , was interested in the arts and had been the model and mistress of Augustus John in 1906-7, she had been born in Russia in the same year as Lewis and grew up in Poland where her mother became a governess after the death of her father. The moody and highly-strung girl. who was obsessed by clothing, had luxurious brown hair, deep blue eyes and a rich slightly accented voice. She was unpretentious, passionate and (unlike most of her contemporaries) eager for love affairs. John who was fascinated by Alick for a time and did some very successful portraits of her, called her his "jeune fille mystérieuse et gaie". In mid 1915 Lewis wrote apologetically to Alick; "I cannot describe my resentment against a woman who made me drunk last Saturday afternoon.I was maudlin and very insolent." And in June he wrote a tantalizing letter, describing his fascination with her nightgown, and his temporary escape, which suggests she was also his mistress: "You caused me this morning to almost alter all my arrangements: for the pink nightgown on sunday (though I don't believe you've got one) captured my my sense, over-susceptible as you know. But I kept my head, and the result is that I regret to say that I shall be away on Sunday next. I am going to the country again.& could not, save by extreme dislocation of arrangements, get back in time for the pink nightdress. Prehaps when you can once more move, and our no longer wrapt round with the odour of disinfectants [She had been ill], I may yet hope tpo have a glimpse of the garment?". Lew wrote to Alick while he was at the front in 1917: and he continued to see her until 1930 when he apparently suspected her loyalty and quarrelled about malicious gossip that had been attributed to her. MEYER, JEREMY. The Enemy. A Biography of Wyndham Lewis. Routledge & Kegan Paul, London 1980. Vorticist period inscriptions by Lewis are of the greatest rarity.         A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

London: Egoist Press, 1917 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to upper board in blind and to spine gilt. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Contents browned, spine cocked and severely sunned. Very good. So-called second edition; the first edition to be printed in the UK. This edition was preceded by the English issue of the Huebsch edition of 1916. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half title page, "To George and Mary Slocombe James Joyce Paris 7. i . 926"; George Slocombe was an English journalist writing for the American papers. He also wrote a book called The Heart of France - Parisian, provincial & peasant, etc (1934). He reviewed Ulysses when it came out, and he is listed by Joyce as one of the select recipients of a press copy. Joyce's inscription usually appears on the front free endpaper; in this copy, however, that space is occupied by the inscription of the book's first owner, Allan Ross Macdougall, an American in Paris, friend and later biographer of Isadora Duncan. Presentation copies of this printing are rare and examples with such interesting Parisian provenance are exceptional in all regards. Slocum & Cahoon A12

Copenhagan: Bianco Lunos. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of all three parts of one of Bohr's most influential works: his groundbreaking paper on the "correspondence principle." On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra "was to have been divided into four parts. Part I: On the general theory was finished in November 1917, and was ready from the printer on April 27, 1918. Part II: On the hydrogen spectrum appeared in print on December 30, 1918. Part III: On the elements of higher atomic number was greatly delayed because of the rapid development of the field, by Bohr and others, until it was finally printed in November 1922 together with an Appendix dealing with later work and serving to bring the treatise to a natural conclusion. Part IV, in which the generally theory was to have been applied to the constitution of atoms and molecules, was never completed. "The treatise was published as a Memoir of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (Dan. Vid. Selsk. Skrifter, naturvid.-mat. Afd., 8. Raekke, Bd. IV, Nr. 1 (1918)). This medium of publication, prompted by the size of the treatise, and the unsettled conditions existing in Europe at the time, undoubtedly contributed to the slowness with which Bohr's novel way of treating the problems of quantum theory became known to most physicists. "Bohr's treatise is as comprehensive as the titles of its four parts indicate. It is unified by the fundamental assumption of an analogy between the quantum theory and classical electrodynamics, a point of view which a couple of years later came to be called the 'correspondence principle.'… [T]his principle.. was destined to serve as the principle guide to the progress of the quantum theory in the early twenties, and which later was built into the quantum mechanics" (J.R. Nielsen, The Correspondence Principle). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Bohr's invention of the correspondence principle. Nobel prize to N. Bohr awarded in 1922 'for his investigation of the structure of atoms, and of the radiation emanating from them'". Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos, 1918-1922. Quarto, original wrappers; custom cloth box. Wrappers with a little toning to edges (as usual); Part III with soiling to front wrapper. Pencil notation at top of Part I wrapper. Text extremely clean. Rare, particularly with all three parts in original wrappers and without any institutional stamps.

1917. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1917. 6 pp undated ads. Original reddish-brown cloth. First Edition, which consisted of only 3,056 copies -- one of the smallest Jack London first editions. This is a collection of eight pieces, mostly nonfiction, some of which were written as early as 1911: the title essay is a socialistic treatise, and the others include a piece on driving a four-horse team, one on small-boat sailing, an Introduction to TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, and two dramatic sketches. The book was published in February 1917, three months after Jack's death.~When the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917 and the Bolsheviks were triumphant, they too found in Jack's selected works the voice of the oppressed masses of the United States. He became and remains [as of 1978] the most widely read American author in Russia. "How sad it is," Anna Strunsky Walling wrote in her epitaph of him, "that Jack London should have passed into the silence, out of the sight of the red banners waving over a free people and out of the reach of the voices of millions singing the Internationale!" [Sinclair]~This is a fine, bright copy (just a hint of rubbing at the tips), and is quite uncommon thus. The front free endpaper bears the signature of Jack London (decidedly not written by himself, for the reason implied above, but ink-stamped). The front paste-down bears the signature "Joan London," presumably in his daughter's hand (Joan London, 1901-1971, went on to have a career in freelance writing and in labor activism); though we are unable to guarantee that this is her signature, we DO know that she ink-stamped and signed copies of her late father's books in order to increase their value. Sisson & Martens p. 92; Blanck 11972.
