        TAMBURLAINE AND OTHER VERSES

(Riverside, CT): Hillacre, 1917. (Riverside, CT): Hillacre, 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Dampstaining to the bottom of the spine of the larger limitation copy with little effect on the text. Some aging to the leather of the smaller limitation volume and soiling to the endpapers. Both Very Good. Small quarto (6-1/4" x 9-1/2"). Issued in an edition of 500 copies, 450 on Utopian laid paper and 50 on Nordeling hand-made paper. Present here are examples of each of the two issues. The larger limitation is as published in blue paper-covered boards with a printed paper label on the front cover. The smaller limitation is bound by E. C. Lewis Co., Baylis Bindery, New York, in full black morocco leather with gilt-ruled panels and a new gilt-decorated and lettered spine, marbled endpapers. The smaller limitation is uncommon in the market. Though there is no indication of such in the books themselves, both of these volumes were in the possession of Louis Bryant, Reed's wife. Included is a 4-1/8" x 8-1/2" original photograph of John Reed on stage in costume annotated in Louise Bryant's hand on the rear: "The Game-- A Morality Play By Louise Bryant-- John Reed as Death." With the stamped credit information for photographer Paul Thompson. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed's life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed's best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed's firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917.

Kokain. Mit sieben Zeichnungen von Felixmüller.

Dresdner Verlag von 1917, (Dresden). 1918.. 43 S. Mit 7 ganzs. Illustrationen. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 5. - Raabe, Kat. Marbach 164.4. - Lang, Expressionismus 58. Für unsere Schweizer Kunden: Konto in der Schweiz vorhanden

        J.M. Keynes Letter Signed

St. Louis, 1917. St. Louis St. Louis, 1917. Autograph Letter Signed by J.M. Keynes To Oswald Toynbee Falk, a stockbroker and a close friend of Keynes. "[St Louis approaching New York] 11 Sept 1917. My dear Falk, I have had the enclosed letter from Herbert Samuel and have promised to do my best to secure such an article as he indicates. Will you try your hand? I should be very grateful if you would. I suspect that in your usual way you will disclaim the competence. But I would undertake to be the judge of that. In any case you might perhaps fortify yourself with collective wisdom by getting your dining party to discuss it first. I am not sure it wouldn't prove a very instructive topic. If so, perhaps I might bring Mr. Samuel as a guest? I expect to be back in England by the end of the first week of October. Sincerely yours J.M. Keynes." Written on printed letterhead of the Royal Economic Society, Kings College, Cambridge (From Mr. J. M. Keynes, Editor of the Economic Journal). Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Letters signed by Keynes seldom enter the marketplace.Oswald Falk is regarded by Robert Skidelsky as the man who understood John Maynard Keynes' mind more than any of his contemporaries. He argues that it was Falk who gave Keynes' his superb understanding of the unruly financial mechanism of capitalism? which distinguished his work from that of his contemporaries (Skidelsky, 1992, 25). The London stockbroker, Nicholas Davenport, recalled that Falk spent a lot of time with Keynes speculating in currency and commodity deals. According to the economist Tommy Balogh who worked for Falk it was his mentor who gave Keynes the insights to develop his theory of liquidity preference by understanding the gilt-edged securities market. Skidelsky regreted that Falk, the most perceptive contemporary Keynes-watcher did not write a memoir of Keynes when perhaps he could have.

The Quest Of Mary Selwyn Sequel to Uncle Frank's Mary

Benziger Brothers NY 1917. Very Good with no dust jacket Hardcover Second book in the Mary Selwyn series which became so popular that two other, smaller books were later written to explain what led Mary to where she began. "Uncle Frank's Mary" (the first book in the series) is also available. Light soil on boards, top edge "dusty". There is a very faint stain along top edge of a few pages in some signatures, but not all, leading me to believe the stain occurred prior to binding. However, there is a stain on rear board that permeates onto rear endpapers. Fade spots on spine. Nevertheless, a very good clean tight binding which matches binding of the first book in the series, "Uncle Frank's Mary". Mary Selwyn Series; Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall; 245 pages; 26788

The Innocents: A Story for Lovers

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1917. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (with the required "Published October, 1917" and the "F-R" code --- light rubs to the spine ends and board corners, front board's upper right corner lightly tapped, minor mark to the closed page block's upper edge, the front free endpaper is signed "Sinclair Lewis" and there dated, but we do not represent or warrant it to be the author's signature), without the scarce dust jacket; an expanded version of a tale that earlier had been serially published in the Woman's Home Companion magazine, and the last of Lewis' novels published by Harper & Brothers. After contracting with Harcourt, Brace for then-future works, Lewis produced the full novel in order to fulfill his contractual obligations to Harper. Under these circumstances, Lewis did not produce his best work and the book was not a success. Sinclair Lewis won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." Of him, H.L. Mencken wrote: "[If] there was ever a novelist among us with an authentic call to the trade ... it is this red-haired tornado from the Minnesota wilds." Copies of "The Innocents" in its first edition, first printing are rather uncommon to the market as befits an unsuccessful book, and copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are more uncommon still. A Near Fine to Fine copy. SCARCE.

In the rare original dustwrapper, with design printed in yellow and white. Many diagrams and drawings in the text, plus sixteen black and white photographs of King's creations by Bruce Cameron.         The Masses / April, 1917

New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917 New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. The April, 1917 issue (Volume IX, Number 6, whole number 70). Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 42 pp.; this is a scarce survivor of the smaller-format issues (i.e., no longer folio size) which were issued late in the life The Masses. 1917 was the last year of publication, and by the time of this issue, there were only months left. Just Fair, due to the absence of the front cover and the separation of the first page from the remaining textblock with rear cover - all of which is itself in Very Good condition, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some small scale chipping on page 3 and rear cover, modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was officially shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918, ostensibly on the basis of postal regulations (though it had already suspended publication in late 1917), following two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of April, 1917 included Eastman, John Reed; Louise Bryant; Floyd Dell; Howard Brubaker; Robert Hillyer; Louis Untermeyer; Hutchins Hapgood; Ruza Wenclaw; Leslie Nelson Jennings; Robert H. Lowie; Charles W. Wood; Jane Whitaker; Anne Arnold; Henry Reich, Jr.; Dorothea Gay; Franklin Van Wert; David Rosenthal; Elizabeth Fox; and Nina Bull. Art was contributed by Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; and Cornelia Barns. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history.         Munition Drawings. From the Collection Presented to the British Museum by His Majesty's Government.

Country Life, 1917. - Large folio [32 x 24 inches]. Consisting of title sheet, contents sheet and six tinted lithographs numbered I - VI in a stiff paper portfolio as issued. The 6 lithographs are: I. The Giant Slotters. II. Mounting a Great Gun. III. Moving Heavy Gun Tubes. IV. The Night Shift Working on a Great Gun. V. Night Work on the Breach of a Great Gun. VI. A Coring Machine at Work on a Big Gun Tube. A small tear to the edge of the front cover otherwise an excellent copy. Bone was the first Official War Artist, being appointed in May 1916. His major contribution was the two volume collection' The Western Front' and 'With the Grand Fleet'. Less well-known were these very large lithographs, probably published in relatively small numbers and obviously intended for framing. The quality of the reproduction is superior to the book versions of his drawings and they rarely turn up for sale. It is believed that only two series were issued, this one and the companion 'With the Grand Fleet', also offered for sale.

        The Masses / April, 1917

The Masses Publishing Company, New York 1917 - New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917.
