Nice copies of this book are. uncommon and it is scarce in jacket. (#108346). First edition. Protagonist awakens in a grim world of the future dominated by socialism and science and learns that legend has made him a kind of messiah. He leads a successful revolt against the establishment. The story, first published in EVERYBODY'S MAGAZINE as a four-part serial, June- September 1917, is one of the earliest American dystopian novels. "A more considerable work than is generally recognized, despite the pulp adventure aspects. One can find among the author's ultraconservative values such Orwellian anticipations as omnipresent slogans, euphemistic terms for horrible institutions, the artificial language Spikisi, the mechanics of thought control, and the apparatus of the police state. While the book is a deutero-WHEN THE SLEEPER WAKES, it is independent in detail, and much Rousseau's best work." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1922. [BAYNTUN of Bath, binders]. Little Brother & Little Sister and Other Tales. London: Constable & Co., 1917. First trade edition. Tall octavo (9 1/2 x 7 3/8 in; 243 x 186 mm). xi, [1], 250, [1], [1, blank] pp. Twelve color plates tipped-in on grey stock with captions, forty-three black and white drawings. Bound ca. 1960 by Bayntun of Bath (stamp-signed) in full blue calf with double-ruled borders, decorated compartments with central gilt vignette. Spine labels in brown and tan morocco. Gilt dentelles. Cockerell endpapers. Top edge gilt. A few plates with faint crease at corner, otherwise a fine copy." it was during these years that he illustrated a new Brothers Grimm title, Little Brother and Little Sister which is in effect one of his crowning achievements. In these twelve colour plates we find the most astonishing versatility of style, and an exquisite pitch of execution. The style ranges from the delicate to the virtual burlesque caricature. On the one hand is an example of pre-Raphaelite, infinitely tender portrayals of womanhood, such as 'The True Sweetheart', or the delicate realism of Maid Maleen and her waiting woman escaping from the terrible tower of her father. Yet within the same book we find the classic Rackhamerie of the gnome with his beard caught in the cleft of the semi-anthropomorphized tree, appealing to Rose-red and Snow-white for help and the Hassell-like custard-pie of the three soldiers and the long nose. This is one of the few books illustrated by Rackham from which it would be possible to select any single-colour picture in order to demonstrate Rackham's art at its finest." (Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 116-117).Lattimore and Haskell, p. 46. Riall, p. 129. [Attributes: First Edition]

English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves” (H.G. Wells).“From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled…although he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!” (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914).Dale, 103.

Wien, 1917. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

London: Egoist Press, 1917 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to upper board in blind and to spine gilt. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Contents browned, spine cocked and severely sunned. Very good. So-called second edition; the first edition to be printed in the UK. This edition was preceded by the English issue of the Huebsch edition of 1916. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half title page, "To George and Mary Slocombe James Joyce Paris 7. i . 926"; George Slocombe was an English journalist writing for the American papers. He also wrote a book called The Heart of France - Parisian, provincial & peasant, etc (1934). He reviewed Ulysses when it came out, and he is listed by Joyce as one of the select recipients of a press copy. Joyce's inscription usually appears on the front free endpaper; in this copy, however, that space is occupied by the inscription of the book's first owner, Allan Ross Macdougall, an American in Paris, friend and later biographer of Isadora Duncan. Presentation copies of this printing are rare and examples with such interesting Parisian provenance are exceptional in all regards. Slocum & Cahoon A12

Orville Wright beautifully framed signed check with a piece of fabric from the original "Wright Flyer"

Document signed "Orville Wright", a check dated July 31, 1917, one page, framed to an overall size of 22" x 18". Uniquely matted and framed along with a fabric section measuring .5? x .75?, from the original "Wright Flyer" plane that was flown on December 17, 1903. The matte used is an oversized photograph of that famous first flight at Kitty Hawk. Included is provenance that reads: "The relic bears a blue ink notation reading "Fabric from Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk Harvey D. Geyer 3/2/51'. Period typing on the sheet above reads: 'All of the fabric for covering the original Kitty Hawk plane was muslin, purchased from Hunter & Hardy Dry Goods Store E. Third Street, Dayton Ohio, and known as 'Pride of the West' muslin'". In late 1926, early 1927, Orville Wright refurbished the Wright Flyer in preparation for loaning it to the Science Museum in London, where it stayed until 1948. During this refurbishment, the airplane was recovered entirely with new Pride of the West musli

On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra

Copenhagan: Bianco Lunos. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of all three parts of one of Bohr's most influential works: his groundbreaking paper on the "correspondence principle." On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra "was to have been divided into four parts. Part I: On the general theory was finished in November 1917, and was ready from the printer on April 27, 1918. Part II: On the hydrogen spectrum appeared in print on December 30, 1918. Part III: On the elements of higher atomic number was greatly delayed because of the rapid development of the field, by Bohr and others, until it was finally printed in November 1922 together with an Appendix dealing with later work and serving to bring the treatise to a natural conclusion. Part IV, in which the generally theory was to have been applied to the constitution of atoms and molecules, was never completed. "The treatise was published as a Memoir of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (Dan. Vid. Selsk. Skrifter, naturvid.-mat. Afd., 8. Raekke, Bd. IV, Nr. 1 (1918)). This medium of publication, prompted by the size of the treatise, and the unsettled conditions existing in Europe at the time, undoubtedly contributed to the slowness with which Bohr's novel way of treating the problems of quantum theory became known to most physicists. "Bohr's treatise is as comprehensive as the titles of its four parts indicate. It is unified by the fundamental assumption of an analogy between the quantum theory and classical electrodynamics, a point of view which a couple of years later came to be called the 'correspondence principle.'… [T]his principle.. was destined to serve as the principle guide to the progress of the quantum theory in the early twenties, and which later was built into the quantum mechanics" (J.R. Nielsen, The Correspondence Principle). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Bohr's invention of the correspondence principle. Nobel prize to N. Bohr awarded in 1922 'for his investigation of the structure of atoms, and of the radiation emanating from them'". Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos, 1918-1922. Quarto, original wrappers; custom cloth box. Wrappers with a little toning to edges (as usual); Part III with soiling to front wrapper. Pencil notation at top of Part I wrapper. Text extremely clean. Rare, particularly with all three parts in original wrappers and without any institutional stamps.

        Roland-Flugzeuge 1914-1917 der Luft-Fahzeug-Gesellschaft m.b.H. Abteilung Flugzeugbau Kaiserdamm, Charlottenburg

n.p.: no publisher, n.d. [c.1917]. An extraordinary photographic album, documenting aircraft production at the Berlin based LFG company during the Great War. 37 original gelatin silver prints 4.5 x 6.5 inches, mounted on 8 x 12 inch cardstock with printed titles beneath. Photographs include the manufacturing plants at Adlershof and later at Kaiserdamm, including one picture of the wreckage of the devastating fire at Adlershof (blamed on the British Secret Service), which forced the relocation, production halls, and many of the company?s aircraft, both on the ground and in the air. One particularly striking image shows Germany?s most successful flying ace, Manfred von Richthofen - The Red Baron - piloting the company?s Roland D III. At a time when most military related operations were shrouded in secrecy it can only be assumed that such a volume was produced in extremely small numbers for a select group. The present copy is in fine condition bound in the original gilt lettered, coated cloth with a gilt embossed aircraft at the center.
