Dekorative Darstellung einer (Südsee-)Insel mit Ornamentfeld, zu beiden Seiten Springböcke und Vögel.

. Monotypie, 1917, auf bräunlichem Velin, signiert und datiert. 28,9:22,9 cm.

Painter-Gravers of America, First Annual Yearbook.

New York: (n.d., circa 1917) - First edition, 4to, 12 pp., plus a list of artist members, a list of patrons and an original etching by Eugene Higgins, signed by him in pencil and dated 1917. The etching is entitled "Transferring the Pup" and measures 13.7 x 11.4 cm. We find no record of any other further published yearbooks by this group and this first annual yearbook as well as the etching are quite rare. The Library of Congress on-line catalog has no record of the yearbook and although they do acknowledge the existence of the etching they have not identified it as to year, etc. World Cat shows only one record, that being in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Thomas J. Watson Library. A very good plus copy showing a few age related light stains. The etching is fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Petropolis (Brazil) and Paris (Nouvelle Revue Francaise), circa 1917]. Large 4to (11 1/2 x 56 7/8 inches when fully extended), stiff cream paper hand-cut to expose backing of heavy royal blue pochoir stock, mounted on bristol board, panels connected beneath backing with linen hinges. 7 double-sided panels, containing mounted panels of handwritten text by Claudel and cut-out designs by Audrey Parr of nude and clothed dancers, with blue ink ornamental additions. Original folding slipcase. Copy no. 14 of an edition of 50 (reportedly). The front side contains pasted panels of text, hand-written by Claudel and comprising the ballet's scenic and choreographic directions and libretto. Alongside the text panels are cut-out designs of nude and clothed dancers, with hand-drawn ornamental additions in blue ink by Parr. On the reverse is a bright, semi-abstract collage by Helene Hoppenot (the famed photographer) of black figures with sashes and musical instruments in gold foil appliques, set against printed commercial music staves, with geometricized, hand-cut black musical notes forming the score for the work by Darius Milhaud Claudel created the ballet while he served as French minister to Brazil and Milhaud was his secretary. According to Milhaud, the Ballets Russes gave a performance in Rio in 1916; it was one of the last times Nijinsky performed, and it was with him in mind that Claudel composed the ballet. The glasses will be very useful in the prosecution of Naval Operations until victory is won. At the termination of the war, if possible, every effort will be made to return them to you, when it is hoped that you will feel compensated for any evidence of wear, by the knowledge that you have supplied 'Eyes for the NAVY' during a very trying period.         Collection of Nishikie on History, Geography, and Customs [Rekishi chiri fuzoku Nishikie bunko] (5 volumes)

1917-1920, Tokyo 1917 - The set of five volumes contain in total 174 wonderful color woodblocks. The set was surely intended at least in part for the tourist market, and thus its component volumes include some of the justly most famous books and illustrations produced in Japan. Among the volumes is the classic work by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Seichu Gishi Den, or Stories of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Sumurai, with 50 plates, Utagawa Hiroshiga's "The Story of the Revenge of the Soga Brothers" or "Soga Monogatari", 30 plates, as well as from his "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". or Meisho Yedo Hiakke, 28 plates, "Kokon Meifuden", or "Anthology of famous women of all ages" by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769 - 1825), 30 plates, and finally " Kinsei kyogiden" or "Biographies of Modern Men" illustrated by Kaisai Yoshitoshi (1832-1892). These volumes may be abridgments of the originals, but all of them offer plates that dazzle with their color, and the print quality is high indeed. With the cross-section of martial and domestic subjects, lovely panoramas and human studies, the Westerner could enjoy a balanced cross-section of the high points of Japanese color woodblock tradition, a tradition that strongly influenced Western artists of the late nineteenth century and beyond, including Van Gogh, Whistler, and many others. The covers all have some wear and light soiling. Generally the plates are bright and clean. The cloth folio which houses the five volumes has sunning and wear but remains structurally sound. A sixth volume was issued by Ogawa, but it should be noted that the five volumes here fit snugly into their folio and thus the set here is complete. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Pioneering the West 1846 to 1878: Major Howard Egan's Diary

Richmond, Utah: Howard R. Egan Estate, 1917. First edition.. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 302,(1)pp. Publisher's green cloth blocked in black on the spine and on the upper board with an image of a horse and rider under the title. Illustrated. Light wear to the edges and corners and with an old repair of a closed tear on the front free endpaper, not affecting the inscriptions, else a very good copy. With the following inscription on the front free endpaper: "The First Book sold: Bought by F. M. Lyman Jr." And further down: "This Book is a truthful narrative. 'Truth is stranger than fiction.' Error alone can bind us in chains. But 'the Truth will make us free.' W. M. Egan." & Lyman was the son of Francis Marion Lyman (1840-1916), a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as well as President of the Quorum (1903-1916). The younger Lyman, though, was a surveyor whose name still appears on map descriptions in Salt Lake City. Howard Egan was an early Mormon pioneer and one of the earliest Pony Express riders. The inscription seems to indicate that this is the first copy of the book sold, but it is in green cloth and thus a variant as Graff indicates that the earliest copies are in black cloth, later in brown. In 1942 William Egan compiled an index to the diary. Graff 1221; Howes E76; Flake/Draper 3121.

1917. [inscribed to Clement Shorter] A Confession. London & Toronto: J. M. Dent & Sons, (1917). 18 pp undated ads. Original light grey-green cloth decorated in brown. First Edition, first issue (so stated), of Conrad's third autobiographical (though fictionalized) work -- "a Far-Eastern story of a haunted ship... No reader of THE SHADOW-LINE will ever forget the first mate and the silent crew of the schooner which had such mysterious difficulty in passing latitude 8 degrees 20 minutes" [from the ads]. This copy is printed on laid paper, as usual (some copies, perhaps those intended for the colonies, are on wove paper). This is a fine copy (spine lettering slightly dull, as usual for this wartime book). Cagle A21a.1. With the bookplates of Clement K. Shorter, of Walter and Dorothy Donnelly, and of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger. Housed in a custom clamshell case.~This copy is inscribed and signed by Conrad, "Clement Shorter | with great regard | from Joseph Conrad | March 1917 [the month of publication]". Conrad had first met the bibliophile and editor Clement Shorter (1859-1926) in 1898, when Conrad was working on his manuscript of THE RESCUER (ultimately published without the final "R" in 1920). The two resumed contact in 1916, when Conrad (always in need of cash) and Shorter devised a scheme to publish six of Conrad's miscellaneous writings in very-limited editions (beginning with ONE DAY MORE in February 1917, a month before this presentation). These "manufactured rarities" [Cagle] were quite a success, and Conrad collaborated with Thomas J. Wise on twenty more of them during the years 1919-1920.

Dresdner Verlag von 1917, (Dresden). 1918.. 177 S. 8°, Orig.-Pappbd. mit handgearb. Buntpapierbezug.. Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner.       Adolf Hoffmann, Berlin. 1917-1918.. Je 4, 6 bzw. 8 S. Fol.. (Seywald 680). Sir John Everett Millais (1888-1920), the grandson of the famous Pre-Raphaelite painter by the same name, was a neighbor of the Conrads in Kent, who during the years 1916-1920 frequently came over to play chess with Conrad. A lieutenant in the Royal Navy, he had seen action on board the HMS Stephen Furness, but developed tuberculosis and was forced to retire in 1916, the year before this presentation; he succumbed to the disease in 1920, at the age of 32. His mother and Conrad's wife were also best of friends. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        J.M. Keynes Letter Signed

St. Louis St. Louis, 1917. Autograph Letter Signed by J.M. Keynes To Oswald Toynbee Falk, a stockbroker and a close friend of Keynes. "[St Louis approaching New York] 11 Sept 1917. My dear Falk, I have had the enclosed letter from Herbert Samuel and have promised to do my best to secure such an article as he indicates. Will you try your hand? I should be very grateful if you would. I suspect that in your usual way you will disclaim the competence. But I would undertake to be the judge of that. In any case you might perhaps fortify yourself with collective wisdom by getting your dining party to discuss it first. I am not sure it wouldn't prove a very instructive topic. If so, perhaps I might bring Mr. Samuel as a guest? I expect to be back in England by the end of the first week of October. Sincerely yours J.M. Keynes." Written on printed letterhead of the Royal Economic Society, Kings College, Cambridge (From Mr. J. M. Keynes, Editor of the Economic Journal). Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Letters signed by Keynes seldom enter the marketplace. Oswald Falk is regarded by Robert Skidelsky as the man who understood John Maynard Keynes' mind more than any of his contemporaries. He argues that it was Falk who gave Keynes' his superb understanding of the unruly financial mechanism of capitalism? which distinguished his work from that of his contemporaries (Skidelsky, 1992, 25). The London stockbroker, Nicholas Davenport, recalled that Falk spent a lot of time with Keynes speculating in currency and commodity deals. According to the economist Tommy Balogh who worked for Falk it was his mentor who gave Keynes the insights to develop his theory of liquidity preference by understanding the gilt-edged securities market. Skidelsky regreted that Falk, the most perceptive contemporary Keynes-watcher did not write a memoir of Keynes when perhaps he could have.

1917. [inscribed to Arthur Symons] A Confession. This is a remarkably fine, bright copy. Cagle A21a.1. Housed in a (dried) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~This copy is inscribed and signed by Conrad, "Arthur Symons | from | Joseph Conrad | March 1917 [the month of publication]". Arthur Symons (1865-1945) was an author, a poet and a critic who was extremely influential in the "symbolist school" of the 1890s. As editor of The Savoy, in 1896 he published Conrad's first short story ("The Idiots"); according to Conrad's wife, Symons was the only poet Conrad read for pleasure (such that he used a Symons verse as the epigraph for TWIXT LAND & SEA in 1912). Symons and Conrad wound up as neighbors in Kent, and also had in common severe bouts with "nerves" during the years 1909-1912.

        The Unholy Three

New York: John Lane Company, 1917 New York: John Lane Company. 1917. First. First edition. Fine in lovely near fine example of the dustwrapper with a tear on the rear panel, tiny nicks at the extremities, and with old tape repairs professionally removed leaving shadows only on the inside of the jacket. Housed in an attractive, albeit somewhat loosely-fitting clamshell case. Creepy crime novel about a team of circus freaks: Tweedledee, a midget, Hercules, the strong man, and Echo, the ventriloquist, who commit heinous crimes. Filmed twice by MGM, as a silent in 1925 and remade as a talkie with Lon Chaney as Echo and Henry Earles as Tweedledee in both versions, Victor McLaughlin played Hercules in the silent version, Ivan Linow in the talkie. The classic Tod Browning cult film Freaks also based on a Robbins story "Spurs" that was clearly derivative from The Unholy Three. Earles reprised his midget role, there was a strongman named Hercules, and a few other freaks were thrown into the mix. Rare in jacket, and never seen in this condition. .
