The Curtiss Standard JN-4B Military Tractor Hand Book.

Buffalo. Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corporation. 1917. - The First Edition. Illustrated with diagrams, 3 of which are fold-outs,detailing the specs and assembly instructions for the airplane.Laid-into volume are two Request for Transportation receipts issued by the U.S. War Department and a period Morse Code Pocket Signal Disk. 32pps. Thin 8vo (5"x8"). Bound in imprinted green cloth over boards. "The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" was one of a series of "JN" biplanes built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company of Hammondsport, New York, later the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. Although the Curtiss JN series (the common nickname was derived from "JN") was originally produced as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army, the "Jenny" continued post-World War I as a civil aircraft as it became the "backbone of American post-war [civil] aviation.Thousands of surplus Jennys were sold at bargain prices to private owners in the years after the War and became central to the barnstorming era that helped awaken America to civil aviation through much of the 1920s.The Curtiss JN-4 is possibly North America's most famous World War I aircraft. It was widely used during World War I to train beginning pilots, with an estimated 95% of all trainees having flown a JN-4. The U.S. version was called "Jenny", a derivation from its official designation. It was a twin-seat (student in front of instructor) dual control biplane. Its tractor prop and maneuverability made it ideal for initial pilot training with a 90 horsepower (67 kW) Curtiss OX-5 V8 engine giving a top speed of 75 miles per hour (121 km/h) and a service ceiling of 6,500 feet (2,000 m).The JN-4B was powered by an OX-2 piston engine, 76 built for the U.S. Army, nine for the U.S. Navy. The Jenny remained in service with the US Army until 1927.After World War I, thousands were sold on the civilian market, including one to Charles Lindbergh in May 1923 in which he then soloed. Surplus US Army aircraft were sold, some still in their unopened packing crates, for as little as $50, essentially "flooding" the market. With private and commercial flying in North America unhampered by regulations concerning their use, pilots found the Jenny's slow speed and stability made it ideal for stunt flying and aerobatic displays in the barnstorming era between the world wars, with the nearly identical Standard J-1 aircraft often used alongside it. Some were still flying into the 1930s. Small Blind embossed stamp of the State of California Bureau of Weights and Measures to lower corner of Front Free Endsheet and Title Page. A bit musty, else a Near Fine, bright, crisp copy unblemished by foxing or any other blemish to text or plates. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Manuscript (handwritten) pocket-sized journals with daily entries starting August 1st, 1917 and going through 1932 sequentially (with the final journal containing entries up through 1964

Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 0. Hardcover. This is a handwritten archive chronicling the daily life and activities of a trapper / hunter / prospector in the wilds of Alaska starting August 1st, 1917. Though the trapper is possibly unnamed throughout the five journals (there is a name on the rear endpaper of the second journal, there's no confirmation that this is the author), there is enough detail to the daily entries to approximately follow his path from Pass Creek, AK inland up to Jack Fish, AK and even further inland to Rampart, AK and Sucker River, AK. During the early years, fishing, hunting and trapping take up much of his time, though he does travel on a regular basis between three "cabins" or campsites, at least one of which is built up with a wooden floor, shelves and a cupboard. The trapper chronicles general ideas of temperature and wind, how many hours he walked or rode (he built a boat to travel faster upriver early on), how many fish he caught (some days upwards of 200 fish) and how many other animals caught or hunted. Mention of digging and prospecting don't start until after he has got himself somewhat settled -- and it's not certain from the brevity of his journal entries whether he originally came to Alaska with prospecting in mind, or simply added that to his list of accomplishments. The archive consists of five pocket-sized journals (one of which is actually an address book), all of which are notated in pencil with each day dated above the entry.1.) The first book is on Good only condition - the sewing to the binding is very loose and several of the pages are detached. This first volume starts on August 1, 1917 and continues on a daily basis through June 2, 1918. In this volume, the first mention of where he is located is August 9th, at Pass Creek, AK. He does make mention of occasional places travelled, though most of the descriptions are geographically based and not actual names that can be found on maps. By April he arrives in Ramparts and then in May reaches Jack Fish, AK. 2.) The second book is a pocket-sized address book which he uses as a journal. This second book starts on July 6th, 1918 and mentions Sucker River on the very first page. By October he has worked on his cabins, hunted extensively and has started to work on basic prospecting issues (Oct 23, he works on a bedrock drain). In this journal he starts to mention names of others in the area (no last names and no information on locations ). He also mentions a woman named Margaret who is noted as his wife - on Feb 15th, 1919: "Wife sick 14th all night and today. Delivery pains. Looks like miscarriage. Relieved Margaret of six or seven month kid at 4a.m. 16th. Do not believe she would have got through without help." This journal ends on June 4, 1919.3.) The third journal begins on July 8, 1919 and goes through Sept 29th, 1920. By this journal, there is a motor for his boat and later he mentions dogs and natives he calls "Huskies". Jan 17th, 1920 he is on his way to Ramparts, AK. On July 8th, 1920, he has arrived at Fort Yukon to gather supplies. This journal ends on September 30th, 1920 where he notes the total number of fish caught at both his upper and lower cabins, totaling 14,955 fish (not sure if that's a year's worth or a month's worth - his record keeping is interesting).4.) Journal #4 is missing most of the front cover, which has been ripped off. The first entry is for October 1st, 1920. On January 28th, 1921 he notes: "Baked bread, made pudding Margaret sick stayed in house all day. Performed surgical operation on Margaret's breast." On March 2nd, 21 he notes: "Reached bedrock about 23 feet. Panned some corse (sp) gold warm snowing most of the day." This journal ends on January 31st, 1922.5.) Journal #5 begins on March 13th, 1929 with: "Start for Fort Yukon. Camp at N. E. Martens Lower cabin." He stayed at Fort Yukon most of March - there are entries, but no details for these dates. And by 1929, Air travel has made it to Alaska - as he took an air plane to "Husky Camp on Collum River. Return to Fort Yukon with family. 5 hours round trip." The entries go through May 14th, 1929 then skip to April 18, 1930 and continue through May 17, 1930. There's a big break from May 17th, 1930 until October 1933 where the author lists the types of furs he brought in: "October Furs 1933: Southwest Marten 2, Northeast Marten: 3, Kids (?) 7, W. Marten 5, Wolves Black 2, Fox Red 1, Weasle (sp) 3, Beaver 2." The journal has a major skip from Oct 1933 and picks up Dec 1, 1963. During this time he spends a large amount of time cutting and hauling wood to use to thaw the ground in the shafts he's picking, and less and less time trapping and fishing. On July 19, 1964 he writes: "Got up 6a.m. cloudy south wind cool. Work on shaft. One shaft down 2 ½ feet water, gold and platinum fine colors, start new shaft, down 2 ½ feet frost. Sediment in first shaft containing gold and platinum. Some rain, thunder. This last journal ends on October 4th, 1964 with: "Get up 7 a.m. Southwest wind 18 above, cloudy, little snow last night." .

        The Vampire of the Continent

New York: The Jackson Press. 1917. Second American edition. Translated by George Chatterton-Hill. Pictorial cloth. Light dampstain at the bottom of the text pages, thus about very good in very good pictorial dustwrapper with a corresponding stain, some small chips, and some very near professional reinforcement of the folds. Not about vampires at all, but a polemic attempting to demonstrate the insatiable greed of Great Britain for Empire. However, the striking illustration on both the front board and repeated on the dustwrapper, of a winging vampire sinking its claws into a nude woman, is among our favorites. We've never seen the book in jacket before. .

        The Job

NY: Harper & Brothers. (1917). The first issue of his third book under his own name and his first attempt, he later said, to write a serious novel. The Job was controversial for its realistic depiction of a woman in the workplace and laid the groundwork for Lewis' great novels of social realism in the 1920s. Offsetting to endpages from jacket flaps and slight wear to board edges; near fine in a price-clipped dust jacket professionally restored to near fine. An extremely scarce book in jacket. First Edition. Hardcover.

Collection of Nishikie on History, Geography, and Customs [Rekishi chiri fuzoku Nishikie bunko] (5 volumes)

Tokyo, 1917-1920. Wraps, with a cloth folio. Very Good. The set of five volumes contain in total 174 wonderful color woodblocks. The set was surely intended at least in part for the tourist market, and thus its component volumes include some of the justly most famous books and illustrations produced in Japan. Among the volumes is the classic work by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Seichu Gishi Den, or Stories of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Sumurai, with 50 plates, Utagawa Hiroshiga's "The Story of the Revenge of the Soga Brothers" or "Soga Monogatari", 30 plates, as well as from his "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". or Meisho Yedo Hiakke, 28 plates, "Kokon Meifuden", or "Anthology of famous women of all ages" by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769 - 1825), 30 plates, and finally " Kinsei kyogiden" or "Biographies of Modern Men" illustrated by Kaisai Yoshitoshi (1832-1892). These volumes may be abridgments of the originals, but all of them offer plates that dazzle with their color, and the print quality is high indeed. With the cross-section of martial and domestic subjects, lovely panoramas and human studies, the Westerner could enjoy a balanced cross-section of the high points of Japanese color woodblock tradition, a tradition that strongly influenced Western artists of the late nineteenth century and beyond, including Van Gogh, Whistler, and many others. The covers all have some wear and light soiling. Generally the plates are bright and clean. The cloth folio which houses the five volumes has sunning and wear but remains structurally sound. A sixth volume was issued by Ogawa, but it should be noted that the five volumes here fit snugly into their folio and thus the set here is complete.

The Innocents: A Story for Lovers

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1917. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (with the required "Published October, 1917" and the "F-R" code --- light rubs to the spine ends and board corners, front board's upper right corner lightly tapped, minor mark to the closed page block's upper edge, the front free endpaper is signed "Sinclair Lewis" and there dated, but we do not represent or warrant it to be the author's signature), without the scarce dust jacket; an expanded version of a tale that earlier had been serially published in the Woman's Home Companion magazine, and the last of Lewis' novels published by Harper & Brothers. After contracting with Harcourt, Brace for then-future works, Lewis produced the full novel in order to fulfill his contractual obligations to Harper. Under these circumstances, Lewis did not produce his best work and the book was not a success. Sinclair Lewis won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." Of him, H.L. Mencken wrote: "[If] there was ever a novelist among us with an authentic call to the trade ... it is this red-haired tornado from the Minnesota wilds." Copies of "The Innocents" in its first edition, first printing are rather uncommon to the market as befits an unsuccessful book, and copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are more uncommon still. A Near Fine to Fine copy. SCARCE.
