        Fairies and Fusiliers

London: William Heinemann,, 1917. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly faded, tiny nicks to tips, mild partial toning to endpapers, otherwise clean and fresh, a smart copy in excellent condition, with a superb example of the dust jacket, a little spine-tanned, some loss at the head and smaller chips and closed tears to corners and edges. First edition, first impression, one of 1,000 copies printed, with the rare dust jacket, and an ALS from Graves laid in discussing the book. Graves writes, "This was the first book of mine published in the USA. I wrote it during the First World War as an infantry captain, between the ages of 19 and 22. My rank was not due to merit, but to the extraordinarily heavy casualities among officers in trench-fighting. I have kept very few of these poems in my collected work; but one has to make a start somewhere and at least they were not imitative of my elders or contemporaries." The letter is signed and dated 21 November 1956, and folded into an envelope to Fraser Drew, Professor of English at the State University College for Teacher, Buffalo, New York, with a Spanish stamp affixed to it. The book also bears the bookplate of R. N. Green-Armytage, who was doctor to Graves' eldest daughter Jenny in the 1930s. Fairies and Fusiliers, Graves' third book, is dedicated to the Royal Welch Fusiliers and contains some of the author's most memorable war poems.

Autograph Letter Signed, in pencil, 2 separate pages, on fragile paper; with a now brittle photo attached to end page, Zennor, St. Ives, Cornwall, Friday, no date [January 12, 1917]

      - To J.B. Pinker, Lawrence's agent, referring to sending Pinker a manuscript of 'The Miracle'; talking about his book, "Women in Love" not being a novel any of the publishers wanted to publish; his issues with publishers paying him properly; and his desire to visit America where he felt he would be well received. Lawrence begins by informing Pinker that, "I send you the manuscript of another story - The Miracle, which is beautiful and ends happily, so the swine of people ought to be very thankful." He refers here to the story The Horse Dealer's Daughter (published in English Review, xxxiv, April 1922) which was originally called The Miracle. He refers to his novel Women in Love, expressing doubt that any publisher would publish it and expresses joy that "there is no more Methuen [referring to the publishing house]." He calls his novel a "chef-d'oeuvre," but suggests that no one "will be dying to publish it." He also refers to poems that he had sent Pinker and suggests that he would be "rather glad if nobody wants. then I shall put them in the fire." He further mentions publishers talking about Duckworth and Mitchell Kennerley who Lawrence says swindled him. Mitchell Kennerley (1878-1950) became Lawrence's American publisher with the publication of "The Trespasser" in May 1912 ; he published "The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd" in 1914. Lawrence He ends by speaking of lack of funds (partly due to Kennerley not paying him properly) and saying, "I am determined that I will have some money before long. I am sick of poking about in a corner, up to the neck in poverty. I think America is my untilled field." Signed, "D.H. Lawrence." Published in The Letters of D.H. Lawrence: October 1916 - June 1921, #1354, where it is dated as 12 January 1918 [Text TMSC, NWU; Huxley 380]. Lawrence moved to Zennor in March of 1916. In "The Major Short Stories of D.H. Lawrence: A Handbook," by Kearney, page 147, "The Miracle" is discussed. "He at last sent the completed short story to his agent J.B. Pinker on January 12, 1917. The tone of the accompanying letter was dark." Kearney also quotes a letter of November 13 to Pinker stating that "The Miracle is 'on hand,' to be finished as soon as he sent off the novel Women in Love. In The Letters of D.H. Lawrence: October 1916 - June 1921, #1354, a footnote states that the story was "eventually re-titled The Horse Dealer's Daughter (see Tedlock, Lawrence MSS 93) and published in English Review."         Lord Jim. A Tale

London, Toronto, Paris: J. M. Dent,, November 1917. Octavo. Original olive cloth, titles to spine gilt, titles and design to spine and front in black, blue top edge. With the dust jacket. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Small Times Book Club ticket to rear pastedown. Very light rubbing and fading to ends and edges of boards, spotting to edges and a few early leaves, partial toning to endpapers, still a very nice copy indeed in the jacket that is faintly spine-tanned, generally a little rubbed at the extremities small chips to corners and slightly larger chips either side of the head of spine panel, causing some ruffling between, still a highly presentable copy. Presentation copy of the second impression of the first revised edition (first impression being June of the same year, originally serialised in Blackwood's 1898?-9 and first published in book form in 1900), superbly inscribed by Conrad on the half title, quoting the final words of the novel, "... while he waves his hand sadly at his butterflies. / Concluding words. / Joseph Conrad / 1920." The striking jacket on this revised edition, illustrated with a likeness of Conrad himself, neatly summarises Lord Jim as "the romantic story of a brave man's effort to regain self-respect after a deed of fatal and unexpected cowardice.

The 6 lithographs are: I. The Giant Slotters. II. Mounting a Great Gun. III. Moving Heavy Gun Tubes. IV. The Night Shift Working on a Great Gun. V. Night Work on the Breach of a Great Gun. VI. A Coring Machine at Work on a Big Gun Tube. A small tear to the edge of the front cover otherwise an excellent copy. Bone was the first Official War Artist, being appointed in May 1916. His major contribution was the two volume collection' The Western Front' and 'With the Grand Fleet'. Less well-known were these very large lithographs, probably published in relatively small numbers and obviously intended for framing. The quality of the reproduction is superior to the book versions of his drawings and they rarely turn up for sale.         PATIENT PERIODICAL in THE VASSARION, Volume Twenty-nine.

1917 - MILLAY, Edna St. Vincent. "THE PATIENT PERIODICAL," in THE VASSARION, Volume Twenty-nine. Poughkeepsie, NY: Vassar College, 1917. Illustrated. Small quarto. Two parts bound as one: 204,[28]; 55,[1] pp. Black paper with a simulated leather texture, title printed in white on spine, an owl device which incorporates the year is stamped in silver gilt on upper board. Vassar-designed bookplate with student signature, a member of the class of 1918, on recto of frontispiece. Binding is sound though chipped at crown, superficially rubbed along joints, and worn through just at the tips of corners. Text and photos are clean. This is the Vassar College yearbook for the class of 1917. Printed on p. 59 are the lyrics to "The Patient Periodical," Millay's winning entry in the Class Song Contest of 1916 for which she wrote both the words and music. Millay's senior portrait appears on p. 80; and there is an informal picture of her on p. 27 of the second part in which she is identified as Vincent, her familiar name. Millay's name also appears as a member of the Tree Ceremonies Committee (p. 53), as a cast member of "The Locked Chest" (p. 122), and as President of the Spanish Club (p. 168). Millay, a scholarship student at Vassar, began her studies at the age of twenty-one. While there, she studied literature and languages, and wrote and appeared in several plays for college productions. She had trouble obeying the rules and regulations meant to protect young Vassar students and was very nearly barred from graduation but for the intervention of faculty and students. After garduation, and before the year had ended, Millay began her successful and very public career by publishing Renascence and Other Poems and moving to New York City. [a]

[Album with 12 Chinese watercolours].[China, 19th century]. Oblong album (23.5 x 33.5 cm) with 12 delicate gouache and watercolour paintings on so-called rice paper (each ca. 19 x 28 cm), mounted on the album's leaves, each painting framed with strips of blue silk ribbon backed with paper attached at the corners. Embroidered binding (1917 or earlier), green braided ties.

An album with 12 vibrantly coloured "pith paintings" showing Chinese junks and other boats, each mounted on a verso (so that the book opens from what in a western book would be the back). Chinese texts appear on the flag of the first boat and stern of the fifth. Pith paintings, often depicting scenes from daily life, flowers, birds or butterflies, were most popular from the 1830s to the end of the century. Parts of the image are painted with a thick layer of gouache (some parts matte and some parts glossy) that sits on the surface of the velvety paper while the watercolour soaks in, giving a distinctive texture and three-dimensional quality. Typically small and fragile, these subtle watercolours were created for the export market to meet the increasing demand for inexpensive souvenirs. There was a flourishing trade in the miniatures, until they were superseded by the less expensive picture postcard. They are painted on what is usually called "rice paper", now sometimes "pith paper", which is neither paper nor made from rice. It is a thin layer of pith cut with a knife from the plant Tetrapanax papyriferum, related to ginseng. With small tears or holes in a few paintings, mostly in the corners and affecting only the open water or sky of the background, some indentations in the paper across the sky, occasionally touching the rigging of a boat, minor spotting, first album leaves and paste-down with marginal waterstains, overall in good condition. A lovely album of brightly coloured Chinese pith paintings of boats.

Ritual of the Grand Temple Daughters of Elks of the Improved, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World. Organized September 9, 1913 Hampton, Va.

Press of the Guide Publishing Co., Inc., Norfolk, Va. 1917 - First edition. 12mo. 23pp. Flexible cloth over card wrappers. "Key of Pass Word" tipped in. Modest creases and wear, about very good. Kelley founded the Grand Temple Daughters of Elks, an auxiliary of The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, a fraternal organization founded by a Pullman porter, Arthur James Riggs, and Benjamin Franklin Howard, who were both members of another fraternal organization who discovered that they shared a dream of forming an Elks organization for people of color. The Elks is the largest predominately black fraternal organization in the world. Whether Emma V. Kelley is related to the novelist Emma Dunham Kelley, who for years was thought to have written two of the earliest novels by an African-American woman (*Megda* 1891 and *Four Girls at Cottage City* 1895), is undetermined but an important question. Little is known about the latter Kelley, who has recently been a subject of much speculation as to her true race. Long thought to be a light-skinned African-American author, new (and from what we've read not entirely convincing) research has attempted to remove her from the pantheon of black writers. If the novelist and this namesake who founded a black women's fraternal organization were determined to be the same person, or even merely related, it would have enormous bearing on the debate. At any rate, rare in its own right: *OCLC* locates no copies; we've located a 1926 history of the movement by the same author, also published in Norfolk. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
