        Wallpaper Sample Folio

Germany 1917 - German wallpaper book featuring Art Nouveau or Jugendstil era wallpapers, with base papers presented in sets with suggested borders and/or complementary papers. No company name given. Date stamped on FEP. The thick folio is comprised with well over 100 sets of paper, or full panels, with sets including up to a half dozen other papers cut in small dimensions. These small swatches are every bit as interesting as the large samples, and the combinations implied should also have interest for what they have to say about decorative taste of the era. The patterns contained herein offer an intriguing mix of those that would widely be regarded as dated today and others that are very much akin to papers currently available. It is impossible to generalize about these papers which include stripes, florals, , geometrics, and combinations of these. Perhaps one point that can be distilled is that a certain formality tends to pervade the papers notwithstanding the languidity thought to characterize Art Nouveau, but this merely demonstrates that tastes did not move in lockstep with heralded fashionable movements when it came to domestic decoration. Over 13 inches tall and 9 inches across, the folio is in very good state of preservation. There are two papers which are torn with only small portions remaining by the spine, and it is possible other papers have vanished, although it should be apparent the total amount of loss can not much exceed that which has occurred since the binder is quite full. Soome light shelf wear and rubbing to the boards which are a patterned paper paste-down.

With the Grand Fleet. From the Collection Presented to the British Museum by His Majesty's Government.

Country Life, 1917. - Large folio [32 x 24 inches]. Consisting of title sheet, contents sheet and six tinted lithographs numbered I - VI in a stiff paper portfolio as issued. The 6 lithographs are: I. H.M.S. "Lion" in Dry Dock. II. On Board a Battle-Cruiser (H.M.S. "Lion"). III. A Battleship at Night. IV. Inside the Turret. V. "Oiling": A Battleship Taking in Oil Fuel at Sea. VI. The Boiler Room of a Battleship. A little softening of the lower corners of the covers but an excellent copy. Bone was the first Official War Artist, being appointed in May 1916. His major contribution was the two volume collection' The Western Front' and 'With the Grand Fleet'. Less well-known were these very large lithographs, probably published in relatively small numbers and obviously intended for framing. The quality of the reproduction is superior to the book versions of his drawings and they rarely turn up for sale. It is believed that only two series were issued, this one and the companion 'Munition Drawings', also offered for sale.

The Quest Of Mary Selwyn Sequel to Uncle Frank's Mary

NY: Benziger Brothers. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1917. Hardcover. Second book in the Mary Selwyn series which became so popular that two other, smaller books were later written to explain what led Mary to where she began. "Uncle Frank's Mary" (the first book in the series) is also available. Light soil on boards, top edge "dusty". There is a very faint stain along top edge of a few pages in some signatures, but not all, leading me to believe the stain occurred prior to binding. However, there is a stain on rear board that permeates onto rear endpapers. Fade spots on spine. Nevertheless, a very good clean tight binding which matches binding of the first book in the series, "Uncle Frank's Mary". . Mary Selwyn Series; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 245 pages; 26788 .

Hajdanába, régös-régön. [Long, Long Time Ago.]

Táltos (Világosság), Budapest 1917 - With 16 full page illustrations. First edition. Title page in red and black. Initials printed in red. In original illustrated hard paper. Presentation copy. 12 p. and 16 plates. This work of Toroczkai-Wigand starts with a short poem, the national epic of the Székelys (Hungarian people in Transylvania), about Prince Csaba, the youngest son of Attila, the King of the Huns and his mother, Réka. The 16 illustrations are showing the buildings and the interiors related to the story, in the special Transylvanian Art Nouveau style. Ede Toroczkai-Wigand (1869-1945) was a Hungarian architect and designer of decorative art. The thoughts of John Ruskin and the Arts and Crafts Movement had a major influence on him. Toroczkai-Wigand had the idea that art, architecture, folk customs and language is a complex structure and this complexity and "holism" reflecting in the unique character of his works. Beside being a prolific architect and designer, who was awarded at many international exhibitions (Paris, 1900; Torino, 1902; St. Louis, 1904), Toroczkai-Wigand published bibliophilic books, partly on his art and partly about the art, architecture and the folk tales of the Székelys in Transylvania. In these publications he combined the content and the typography of the print into a special unity, in the manner of the unique Transylvanian Art Nouveau style. In original illustrated hard paper First edition. Title page in red and black. Initials printed in red [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Unholy Three

New York: John Lane Company. 1917. First. First edition. Fine in lovely near fine example of the dustwrapper with a tear on the rear panel, tiny nicks at the extremities, and with old tape repairs professionally removed leaving shadows only on the inside of the jacket. Housed in an attractive, albeit loosely-fitting clamshell case. Creepy crime novel about a team of circus freaks: Tweedledee, a midget, Hercules, the strong man, and Echo, the ventriloquist, who commit heinous crimes. Filmed twice by MGM, as a silent in 1925 and remade as a talkie with Lon Chaney as Echo and Henry Earles as Tweedledee in both versions. Victor McLaughlin played Hercules in the silent version, Ivan Linow in the talkie. In the classic Tod Browning cult film Freaks, also based on the Robbins story "Spurs" that was clearly derivative from The Unholy Three, Earles reprised his midget role, there was a strongman named Hercules, and a few other freaks were thrown into the mix. Rare in jacket, and never seen in this condition. .

1917. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1917. 6 pp undated ads. Original reddish-brown cloth. First Edition, which consisted of only 3,056 copies -- one of the smallest Jack London first editions. This is a collection of eight pieces, mostly nonfiction, some of which were written as early as 1911: the title essay is a socialistic treatise, and the others include a piece on driving a four-horse team, one on small-boat sailing, an Introduction to TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, and two dramatic sketches. The book was published in February 1917, three months after Jack's death.~When the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917 and the Bolsheviks were triumphant, they too found in Jack's selected works the voice of the oppressed masses of the United States. He became and remains [as of 1978] the most widely read American author in Russia. "How sad it is," Anna Strunsky Walling wrote in her epitaph of him, "that Jack London should have passed into the silence, out of the sight of the red banners waving over a free people and out of the reach of the voices of millions singing the Internationale!" [Sinclair]~This is a fine, bright copy (just a hint of rubbing at the tips), and is quite uncommon thus. The front free endpaper bears the signature of Jack London (decidedly not written by himself, for the reason implied above, but ink-stamped). The front paste-down bears the signature "Joan London," presumably in his daughter's hand (Joan London, 1901-1971, went on to have a career in freelance writing and in labor activism); though we are unable to guarantee that this is her signature, we DO know that she ink-stamped and signed copies of her late father's books in order to increase their value. Sisson & Martens p. 92; Blanck 11972.
