Hi, This lot is an Original 1915 Hardback Wisden . It is in Excellent condition. There really is not much wrong with this book , in fact it was on my main shelf for a couple of years until a recent swap, the boards are very good, a couple of small marks to the base and a thin line and feint mark to the rear board, thin bobbling line to the rear board. The gilt is bright, strong hinges and the internal pages are very clean, a couple of small marks to the page block. By far superior to many of the same year. Super photoplate,

[Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914]. HURLEY, Frank
1915. A very large vintage blue-toned carbon print (587 × 753 mm), flush-cut on the original thick card mount, recently mounted and matted using archival materials. The visible image size is 530 × 720 mm, with the mat now masking moderate to heavy tanning around all edges (caused by an earlier acidic mat); overall in excellent condition. This print comes from the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs; this was a slightly enlarged version of the London exhibition held earlier in the same year. The label of the Fine Art Society, New Bond Street, London is on the verso of this print, with the title (as above) and the catalogue reference number 68 added in ink. The full title of the Australian exhibition catalogue is 'Exhibition of Unique Photographic Pictures taken during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Also other Photographic Studies by Frank Hurley' (small octavo, 16 pages plus 8 full-page plates and the title-wrappers; printed in Adelaide by G. Hassell & Son). A small advertisement appeared in the Adelaide 'Advertiser' on Saturday 25 September 1915, announcing a 'South Polar Exhibit.... until October 6. This Exhibition is your only opportunity of viewing Historical Relics of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and Frank Hurley's Unexcelled Photographic Reproductions'. Provenance: Sir Douglas Mawson (with the Mawson Estate stamp on the verso); by descent.

Lawrence, D H
London; Methuen & Co Ltd, 1915., 1915. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp., vii, [1], 463, [1], [4] catalogue. Publishers' blue-green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and titles in blind to upper board. Cover cloth lightly stained with small split central upper joint, rubbing to edge and a little rippling to upper board. Front end-papers and half-title damp stained; minor half-inch tear at rear inner hinge. A very good copy. "Methuen published The Rainbow in September 1915, but it got savage reviews, most of which attacked what was understood as the book's overt sexuality, and it was withdrawn from sale. At Bow Street magistrates' court on 13 November it was banned as obscene (Lawrence having no opportunity to defend it). Its religious language, emotional and sexual explorations of experience, and sheer length had given its readers problems, but it was Ursula's lesbian encounter with a schoolteacher in the chapter 'Shame' which had finally condemned it in the eyes of the law and of a country now focused on conflict" (ODNB). As a result the book was withdrawn from sale just two months after publication and half the print run of 1250 copies were destroyed. Despite the initial reaction, The Rainbow was Number 48 in the influential Random House Modern Library 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century and the rare first edition is much sought after.

Zane Grey
Harper and Brothers, 1915. Author: Zane Grey Title: The Rainbow Trail Publisher: Harper & Brothers - New York Date Published: 1915 Pages: 373 "The spell of the desert comes back to me, as it always will come. I see the veils, like purple smoke, in the canyon, and I feel the silence. Zane Grey, The Rainbow Trail - 1915 Description: A very good copy of the 1915 1st edition without the rare jacket and inscribed by Zane Grey. 8vo, 7.5 x 5.5", 373 pages in publishers original green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt. An early reprint without date on title page and with code H-Q on copyright (vs F-P of 1st printing). Wonderfully inscribed on the front free endpaper to his wife Dolly: "To Dolly, This story was the first to get into that best-selling class. That class of doubtful fame, yet so desired of novelists. And I think it the most idealistic of all my romances. Zane Grey." Provenance: A great grandchild of the author. Eric Leadbitter - Author's own copies of his six published novels (1915 1923) Rain Before Seven, The Road to Nowhere, Perpetual Fires, Shepherd's Warning, Dead Reckoning and The Evil that Men Do - published by George Allen & Unwin and Hodder & Stoughton All but one include details in the author's neat hand of the dates on which the novel was begun, finished, revised and published, some include more detailed notes and his signature, four have the notes written in ink, two in pencil and some have additional pencil annotations and corrections to the texts. 'Rain Before Seven' and 'Shepherd's Warning' are second impressions, the other four are first impressions. Four retain their original dust jackets, including, quite remarkably, the 1916 publication, 'The Road to Nowhere'. All books are firmly bound, the text blocks are fairly uniformly toned, dusty and foxed. The outer boards are for the most part clean though slightly bumped and rubbed. The dust jackets have some loss, closed tears and grubby marks. 'Rain Before Seven' is substantially set in London and the Buckinghamshire countryside and seems to be a reasonably cheerful novel of youth, romance and the early stages of a career. 'The Road to Nowhere' follows the progress of Joe Peeper from childhood in a London grocer's shop, through a variety of careers, a rise in fortunes, a failed marriage made chiefly for social gain to the breakdown of that life and departure from London for foreign parts. 'Perpetual Fires' seems to revolve around one family's life in the village of Spitalhaugh and town life in Hampstead, the last few … [Click Below for Full Description]

Froebel
1915. Thick, large quarto. 9 9 x 2.5 inches. Black pebbled cloth covers with cover lettering printing in bold gilt, "Paper Cutting." An extremely scarce and desirable portfolio of paper cutting designs and examples based on the Froebel system for kindergarten education. 41 leaves of thick paper boards bound in accordion fashion with gray linen hinges. Includes 39 samples of color paper cutting, weaving, landscapes and ornamental designs tipped-in, with one double-page, some engineered with mechanical stylized grandfather clocks, pendulums, etc. Black ties at fore-edges. There is a Kindergarten Annex greeting and invite tipped-in dated 1915, which nicely gives approximation for date of this item. This is a sample book, made as coursework by a young Edwardian teacher to show her mastery of Gift No. 13 in Froebelian Kindergarten instruction. Froebel (1782-1852) coined the word, "kindergarten," and developed programatic designs and techniques to expand creativity in 4-5 year olds utilizing colors, shapes patterns etc, which he referred to as "Froebel Gifts." The Gift #13 consisted of colored papers to be folded and cut and mounted. The present example includes not only simple patterns, but also Arts & Crafts style ornamental design pieces, as well cutout board figures and many loose sample papers fro the original kit which have not yet been mounted (supplied in plastic bag). A wonderful survival, all items including binding in very good condition.
