Samuel Gabriel Sons, New York, 1915. Small quarto. Double-sided accordion-fold comprising six paper covered board panels with maroon cloth joints. Cover title image plus eleven chromolithographed illustrations of trains on glazed paper, each with a caption printed below the image. The majority of the images features steam locomotives in various settings: on a turn-table, crossing bridges, at the water tank, etc.; and while most images show passenger trains, more utilitarian uses are depicted here as well, including a lumber train and a freight train. One panel shows an electric locomotive, a technology that was introduced into wide commercial use in the U.S. in 1895. Rare: this panorama is not held in any institutional collection. Some rubbing to cover corners, minor soiling. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Chamberlain THE KNICKERBOCKER PRESS, New York 1915 1st Printing / 1st Edition ___________ Clearly, the from board has come loose from the rest of this rare, seminal Civil War volume. The Queen of Roumania; Dulac, Edmund (Illustrator)
Hodder & Stoughton, 1915. Dulac, Edmund. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto size, 189 pp., six color plates. Near Fine. A breathtakingly lovely example of the incomparable work of Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), who truly needs no introduction; he was the only illustrator of his day on par with Arthur Rackham and was known for his exquisite colors, oriental influence, and versatility in his artistic endeavors. This book, Hodder and Stoughton's featured "New art gift book" of the year for 1915, is immediately recognizable for its frontispeice illustration of the snow maiden accompanied by white bears, which "makes one catch one's breath at its sheer beauty". The beautiful frontispiece was a supplement page in Hodder and Stoughton's "Christmas Bookman," which also featured a photograph of Dulac, a review of the book and its illustrations and several lavish ads. The pictures were described as "vivid and beautifully imaginative paintings." ___DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth with gilt lettering and sword design in navy blue, similarly decorated at the spine, title-page printed in olive-green and grey, six colour plates mounted on tan-grey art paper, framed with three-rule green borders, lettered tissue guards with green captions; quarto size (10" by 7"), pagination: [i-viii] 1-181. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine; the binding appears to be fresh out of the binder's shop, with straight, unrubbed corners, a strong square text block with solid hinges, and the gilt on the front board exceptionally bright; the plates and tissue guards bright and complete, and the volume free of prior … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maurice E. McLoughlin (Sincalir Lewis)
George H. Doran Company. Cloth. A solid copy of the 1915 1st edition, IN THE VERY UNCOMMON PICTORIAL DUSTJACKET. Ghostwritten, by all accounts, by a young Sinclair Lewis, who 15 years later would become the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Tight and VG+, with no writing or markings of any kind (foxing, etc.) to speak of. And in a bright, VG- (and yet still very presentable) example of the fragile dustjacket. The jacket shows a degree of chipping along the panel edges (resulting in just a touch of loss to the title at the spine crown and the publisher's address at the foot of the rear panel), a 3" chip in the center of the spine (roughly the size of a quarter and then running down a bit), inconspicuous staining and tape re-inforcing to the inside of the dustjacket and, finally, light staining --and a bit of creasing-- to the front panel. Thick octavo, illustrated with 72 crisp black-and-white photos, Introduction/Preface by R. Norris Williams, 2nd (the 1914 National Champion of the United States). Maurice McLoughlin (1890-1957) not only won the US Championships in 1912 and 1913 and earned the world #1 ranking in 1914, he was also the first men's player from the Western United States (Nevada) to become US Champion and the first US finalist at Wimbledon (where he lost to Anthony Wilding in 1913). Girls' Education] [Women in Science] Margaret J. Alcott
[n.p.], 1915. Exceptionally dense and detailed Astronomy I class notebook, comprised of 81 handwritten pages in pencil, 3 folding hand-drawn diagrams and star maps, 3 additional pasted in maps and photos, and numerous hand-drawn illustrations of constellations, astronomical tools, and the surface of the moon. Bound in a cloth and brown paper composition book with handwritten paper label on front. The notebook begins with a detailed 4 page table of contents before moving into observations and calculations related to the constellations, sun, and moon. Composed in pencil throughout, with occasional red ink corrections by the instructor. Enrolled in her science course from the winter of 1914 into the spring of 1915, student Margaret Alcott was studying at an exciting moment in the history of astronomy. Though the field continued to be heavily male dominated, women like Annie Jump Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Phoebe Waterman, and Mary Proctor were making cutting edge discoveries and distributing their findings. These accomplishments shaped the lessons Alcott took, as she records the variable brightness of stars throughout the months (Leavitt, Period Lumosity), considers spectra (Cannon), and makes use of telescope and telescopic photos to look at surfaces (Waterman and Proctor). While Alcott records verbal observations on the appearance and movements of celestial bodies, she also uses geometry to calculate their movements and placement relative to each other and to the Earth. Large portions of the notebook are dedicated to these calculations. A dedicated student, Alcott's wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frost, Robert
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. Hard Cover. First Edition. Very Good. First American edition, second issue, with "And" on page 14, in Crane' first state binding with fine linen cloth and white endpapers. Inscribed by Frost on the verso of page x with the holograph poem "Misgiving" and signed "Robert Frost / 1921". Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt. Very good, with some light toning to the sine, some wear to the spine ends, light rubbing to the otherwise bright boards, fresh gilt, former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, spine racked and holding at the half-title, bottom edge of the first few pages slightly chewed at the spine tail, otherwise clean interior. Overall, a clean copy with an excellent inscription by Frost. Crane A2.1. Frost inscribed this copy of A Boy's Will with the poem "Misgiving," which was not published in book form until his 1923 collection New Hampshire. This poem was first published serially in the Yale Review in January 1921 along with "Snow Dust," "The Onset," and "A Star in a Stone-Boat." Notably, Frost likely inscribed this copy of A Boy's Will slightly after the initial publication of "Misgiving" in The Yale Review. First published in London by David Nutt in 1913 only two months after Frost moved to Beaconsfield, A Boy's Will is Frost's first collection of poetry, most of which was comprised while he lived in Derry. It includes 34 poems, including "Ghost House," "Wind and the Window Flower," "Asking for Roses," "Waiting Afield at Dusk," "The Demiurge's Laugh," and "My Butterfly," among others. Jerome D. Travers and Grantland Rice
Doubleday, Page & Company. Cloth. A truly impressive copy of the 1915 1st edition. Tight and unusually crisp, with just a touch of light foxing to the endpapers. And in a bright, price-intact ($1.25), VG- to VG example of the 1st issue pictorial dustjacket. Light chipping at the spine crown and along the panel edges and tips, light foxing to the panels. Still though, handsome and very presentable --and notably uncommon in dustjacket. 12mo, 9 line-drawn illustrations complementing the text, co-written by the formidable Grantland Rice. Jerome Travers had just come off a win at the 1915 US Open at Baltusrol to add to his 4 US Amateur Golf Championships and, by any measure, was (and still is) considered one of the great golfers of the early part of the 20th century. His name is included among some of the immortals of the day such as Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, Chich Evans and Harold Hilton. (Donovan & Murdoch 37130). Near Fine / Very Good. HOWARD, Humbert
1915. Oil painting of dancers. Image size 16.5" x 13"; frame 26.5" x 24". Signed "Humbert Howard '80." A lively impressionist assemblage of dancers brightly clothed, whirling in close proximity to each other. Howard was born in 1915 and lived in Philadelphia. Although he spent most of his career there, establishing a firm regional reputation, his fame eventually grew nationwide. He studied at Howard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Barnes Foundation. He had a major exhibition of his works at the William Penn Memorial Museum, exhibited at the Library of Congress in 1940, and had a one-man show at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work is prominently featured in the landmark book, *American Negro Art* by Cedric Dover, and indeed an illustration of his portrait of a showgirl is the first painting to be illustrated in the book. His paintings are in many private and institutional collections and continue to be sought after. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

COCTEAU (Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

An extensive photo album detailing the two-year cross country journey of the Liberty Bell in 1915. The Bell was on its way to and returning from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco which was held to celebrate the recently finished Panama Canal. Additionally laid in is a pamphlet from the fair with the history of the Bell printed on it, an opinion piece from the *Rock Island Argus and Daily Union* in Illinois weighing in on the debate over whether San Francisco should have access to the bell: "let San Francisco have the bell. Its pilgrimage to the Pacific coast will bring out some of the most impressive demonstrations of American patriotism the country has ever seen." The decision to send it out was mostly due to a petition signed by 500,000 school children which convinced Pennsylvania officials to lend the bell to the Exposition: a picture of the petition is seen here. This photo album was compiled by David W. Harris, a Philadelphia Councilman, who was part of the Bell's "councilmanic escort" on its journey to and from the exposition. The bell was sent on a cross country "whistle stop tour" of the United States while making its way to the West Coast. Accor … [Click Below for Full Description]
